Correlation of ABO Blood Group Phenotype and Rhesus Factor with Periodontal Disease: An Observational Study

Background:

The knowledge of the ABO blood group phenotype of the patients and their correlation with the periodontal disease maybe important in the development of early treatment strategies, and it would be helpful to target non-responding areas to periodontal therapy of the susceptible individuals.

Aims:

The present study was conducted to determine whether there was any correlation between periodontal diseases and ABO blood groups and Rh factor.

Material and Method:

This study was carried out on 537 subjects attending Faculty of Dental Sciences OPD in BHU. Subjects were divided into three groups: group I (healthy subjects), group II (subjects with gingivitis), and group III (subjects with periodontitis) based on periodontal examination (Gingival index, Bleeding Index, Probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level). ABO Blood grouping were done and correlated with the periodontal status of study subjects. Statistical Analysis: Data was analyzed using the statistical software namely Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 16, IBM Analytics) and Systat 8.0.

Results:

In this study, there was a greater prevalence of gingivitis in blood group O and periodontitis in blood group B. The blood group AB showed the least prevalence of periodontal diseases. Similarly gingivitis and peridontitis were significantly higher among Rhesus positive groups when compared with Rhesus negative groups.

Conclusion:

Considering the results of this study, it can be concluded that ABO blood groups and Rh factor could be a risk factor for the development of periodontal disease.

Evaluation of the Secretor Status of ABO Blood Group Antigens in Saliva among Southern Rajasthan Population Using Absorption Inhibition Method

INTRODUCTION

The ABO blood group system was the significant element for forensic serological examination of blood and body fluids in the past before the wide adaptation of DNA typing. A significant proportion of individuals (80%) are secretors, meaning that antigens present in the blood are also found in other body fluids such as saliva. Absorption inhibition is one such method that works by reducing strength of an antiserum based on type and amount of antigen present in the stains.

AIM

To check the efficacy of identifying the blood group antigens in saliva and to know the secretor status using absorption inhibition method among southern Rajasthan population.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Blood and saliva samples were collected from 80 individuals comprising 20 individuals in each blood group. The absorption inhibition method was used to determine the blood group antigens in the saliva and then the results were correlated with the blood group of the collected blood sample. The compiled data was statistically analysed using chi-square test.

RESULTS

Blood groups A & O revealed 100% secretor status for both males and females. While blood groups B and AB revealed 95% secretor status.

CONCLUSION

Secretor status evaluation of the ABO blood group antigen in saliva using absorption inhibition method can be a useful tool in forensic examination.

Genetic and heritable risk factors in periodontal disease

The purpose of this paper is to review current knowledge of genetic risk factors for the periodontal diseases and to present updated and additional data from the Minnesota Twin Periodontal Study. Family studies suggest that susceptibility to the early onset forms of disease, particularly prepubertal and juvenile periodontitis, is, at least in part, influenced by host genotype. Inherited phagocytic cell deficiencies appear to confer risk for prepubertal periodontitis. The prevalence and distribution of juvenile periodontitis in affected families are most consistent with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. However, considerable etiologic as well as genetic heterogeneity within these clinically-defined diseases is evident. Whether or not genetic factors influence the more common adult chronic periodontitis is less clear. Although results from family studies suggest that environmental factors appear to be the major determinants of variance in adult periodontitis, data from our twin studies indicate that both genetic and environmental factors influence disease. Furthermore, comparisons between reared-together and reared-apart adult monozygous twins indicate that early family environment has no appreciable influence on probing depth and attachment loss measures in adults.

Determination of periodontal disease activity

The determination of disease activity has a direct impact on therapeutic measures in periodontics. Evaluations that may indicate disease activity have been reviewed under the topics of traditional evaluations, gingival crevicular fluid contents, tissue changes, circulating factors, and sulcular microbiota. The traditional methods, such as probing, radiographs, and clinical indices, were static evaluations that had limited validity in determining disease activity. When used in longitudinal tests, these methods may be used retrospectively to detect disease activity. Evaluation of the contents of gingival crevicular fluid has promise as a noninvasive method of determining tissue changes in the periodontium. To date, none of the crevicular fluid constituents has been a reliable indicator of disease activity. Tissue changes in the periodontium are important in understanding the disease processes but have had limited value as indicators of disease activity. The ability to determine disease activity through identification of substances or changes in the systemic circulation would prove quite useful to the clinician. Although some reports found lymphocyte transformation indicative of active disease, others had conflicting results. Finally, examinations of sulcular microbiota provided evidence suggesting that active periodontal disease was associated with specific groups of pathogens and with elevated counts of motile organisms. The evaluation of such pathogens and motile organisms currently shows the most promise for determining periodontal disease activity. However, long-term assessments and further clinical trials are necessary before this type of evaluation can be widely accepted. It is hoped that such studies will enable the clinician to predict the natural history of active and inactive periodontal disease.
