Microleakage between composite/wire and composite/enamel interfaces of flexible spiral wire retainers: direct versus indirect application methods

Evaluation and comparison of the effect of incorporating zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the bond strength and microleakage of two orthodontic fixed retainer adhesives

BACKGROUND

An adhesive with both proper mechanical and antimicrobial properties seems to be beneficial. We aimed to investigate the effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) on bond strength and microleakage of two different fixed retainer adhesives.

METHODS

In this in vitro experimental study, 168 extracted human incisors were randomly divided into six groups of 28 (eight double-tooth specimens for the bond strength test and 12 specimens for the microleakage test). In three groups: Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA) without NPs, with 1% ZnO NPs and with 1% TiO2 NPs were applied. The other three groups included Ortho Connect Flow (GC orthodontics, Tokyo, Japan) composite with the same order to bond a 0.175-inch multistrand wire to the lingual surfaces of the teeth. The bond strength was measured using the Universal Testing Machine, and the adhesive remnant index was reported using a stereomicroscope (Nikon, SMZ800, Tokyo, Japan). The dye-penetration method was used to determine the microleakage.

RESULTS

For bond strength, there was no significant difference among groups. For microleakage, there was no significant difference between GC and Transbond XT groups. However, in subgroups of Transbond XT, the addition of TiO₂ NPs increased the microleakage significantly in comparison with ZnO and control groups (P = 0.011). There was no significant statistical difference between the groups in terms of residual adhesives (P = 0.166).

CONCLUSIONS

Through the incorporation of 1% TiO₂ and ZnO NPs into the fixed retainer adhesive, the bond strength was maintained within the clinically acceptable range. The addition of TiO2 NPs to Transbond XT significantly increased the percentage of microleakage.

Comparison of microleakage and shear bond strength of ribbon and twisted wire retainers bonded on human mandibular incisors with two different types of adhesives with and without primer: An in-vitro study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Shear bond strength and microleakage are the success factors of fixed retainers. Recently, primer-free composites were introduced to reduce chair time. The main objectives of this study were to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of GC Ortho Connect^TM Flow (OF) and Transbond^TM XT (TXT) with two types of common retainer wires (0.0175-inch twisted wire and 0.028×.0.008-inch ribbon dead soft wire retainers). The secondary objectives of the study were to compare enamel-adhesive interface and wire-adhesive interface microleakages.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This in vitro study was conducted on 132 human mandibular incisors (96 for bond strength and 36 for microleakage). The teeth were randomly divided into four groups for use of ribbon and twisted wires with OF and TXT adhesives. The bond strength was measured by a universal testing machine. Microleakage was evaluated by the dye penetration test using 0.05% fuchsine. Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA (alpha=0.05).

RESULTS

No significant difference was noted in bond strength among the four groups (P>0.05). However, the microleakage of OF was significantly higher than that of TXT at both the enamel-adhesive and wire-adhesive interfaces (P<0.001). The microleakage at the wire-adhesive and enamel-adhesive interface was not significantly different in groups 1 and 4 and was significant in group 2 and 3.

CONCLUSION

Type of adhesive significantly affected the microleakage, and OF resulted in higher microleakage than TXT at both the enamel-adhesive and wire-adhesive interfaces. Type of wire had no significant effect on microleakage. Although OF showed comparable SBS to TXT, its higher microleakage may compromise its successful long-term clinical service.

A new flash-free orthodontic adhesive system: A first clinical and stereomicroscopic study

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the clinical and laboratory properties of the recently introduced APC flash-free orthodontic adhesive.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

After bonding of 80 brackets on human teeth (group A: APC flash-free adhesive n  =  40, group B: APC Plus adhesive n  =  40), the following measurements were recorded: time for bonding, stereomicroscopic evaluation of excess adhesive, color penetration (methylene blue, 0.5%/24 h), and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) score after debonding.

RESULTS

The time needed for bonding differed significantly between the two groups (A: 19.5 s/tooth vs B: 33.8 s/tooth). The adhesive excess, which was metrically measured from the bracket edge, ranged from 166.27 µm to 81.66 µm (group A) and 988.53 µm to 690.81 µm (group B). After methylene coloration in group A, 52 of 80 measurements showed discoloration on the bracket-adhesive and/or adhesive-enamel interface, while for group B, 78 of 80 were coloration positive. The ARI scores did not differ, with an average ARI score of 2.0 for group A and 2.8 for group B.

CONCLUSION

The flash-free adhesive significantly reduced the time needed for the bonding process. The excess resin expanded 0.16 to 0.08 mm over the bracket margin. The new technology seems to facilitate a smooth and sufficient marginal surface of the adhesive, which clinically might improve reduction of plaque accumulation.

Efficacy of Esthetic Retainers: Clinical Comparison between Multistranded Wires and Direct-Bond Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite Splints

THE PURPOSE OF THIS LONGITUDINAL PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE RELIABILITY OF TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS IN CLINICAL USE: a multistrand stainless steel wire and a polyethylene ribbon-reinforced resin composite. Moreover the level of satisfaction of the patient about the esthetic result was also analyzed by means of a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). 34 patients (9 boys and 25 girls, mean age 14.3), in the finishing phase of orthodontic treatment, were selected for the study. Since splints were applied the number, cause, and date of splint failures were recorded for each single tooth over 12 months. Statistical analysis was performed using a paired t-test, Kaplan Meier survival estimates, and the log-rank test. Kruskal Wallis test was performed to analyze VAS recordings. Differences between the bond failure rates were not statistically significant. Esthetic result of VAS was significantly higher for polyethylene ribbon-reinforced resin retainers than for stainless steel wires.
