Evaluation of partially dentate patients’ knowledge about caries and periodontal disease

Association between Oral Hygiene Information Sources and Daily Dental and Denture Care Practices in Urban Community-Dwelling Older Adults

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the sources of daily oral hygiene information among urban community-dwelling older adults in Athens, Greece and associate them with their dental and denture care habits. One hundred and fifty-four older adults (aged 71.7 ± 9.2 years) participated in the study, and their dental status, denture use, daily oral care habits according to current gerodontology recommendations, and oral care information sources were investigated. Daily oral hygiene practices were poor, and a small number of individuals recalled having received oral hygiene advice from a dentist. Only 41.7% of the 139 dentate participants performed toothbrushing with fluoride-based toothpaste at least twice a day, and 35.9% completed regular interdental cleaning. Among 54 denture wearers, 68.5% removed their denture(s) at night, and 54% cleaned them at least twice a day. Oral hygiene information sources included dentists (for approximately half of the participants), media, friends/relatives, non-dental health care providers and dental technicians. Dentate participants who had received oral hygiene information from dentists had a greater probability of brushing their teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day (p = 0.049, OR = 2.15) and performing regular interdental cleaning (p < 0.001, OR = 29.26). Denture wearers who had received instructions about denture hygiene from dentists were more likely to use a brush and mild soap (p = 0.016, OR = 14.67) and remove their denture(s) at night (p = 0.003, OR = 8.75). Dentists should improve their oral health prevention and promotion strategies for their older patients.

Effect of educational progressive web application on patient's oral and denture knowledge and hygiene: A randomised controlled trial

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a novel progressive web application (PWA) on the patient's oral and denture knowledge and hygiene. Fifty-two removable partial denture wearers were randomised to receive education using the PWA, or verbal instructions accompanied by demonstration of hygienic procedures. Changes in the participants' knowledge score, plaque index, gingival index and denture plaque was evaluated during a follow-up period of 3 months. The participants' acceptance of PWA was explored through usage logs and a feedback form. Both groups showed significant improvement in knowledge scores, oral and denture hygiene indices (p < 0.001) after education. The PWA group demonstrated significantly lower gingival index score than control (p = 0.008) at the third month review. In conclusion, there is potential of using mobile application in educating elderly patients and the PWA is a viable option for providing post-denture delivery instructions.

Effect of Ozone on Corrosion Behavior of a Cobalt–Chromium Alloy Used in Removable Partial Denture Framework: An In Vitro Study

Aim:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the ozonated water on corrosion of a cobalt–chromium (Co-Cr)-based alloy, which is applied for the fabrication of metal frameworks of removable partial dentures.

Materials and Methods:

In this in vitro study, a total of 30 disk-shaped samples of a Co-Cr alloy were papered and randomly divided into two groups of 15 specimens. In group 1 (control), the specimens were stored in distilled water (DW), and in group 2, the specimens were stored in ozonated water. Around 90 immersions were performed, and the weight change of each specimen was determined. The ion release was analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer. The potentiodynamic polarization test was performed for each group to assess the corrosion resistance of the Co-Cr alloy. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. Data were analyzed by independent samples’ t-test.

Results:

The results showed no significant difference between the weight changes of the two groups. The test using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer demonstrated no significant difference between the groups in Co and Cr ions release. In the potentiodynamic polarization test, both groups present similar corrosion behavior, and ozonated water has no deleterious effect on the corrosion resistance and passive range of the Co-Cr alloy compared to DW.

Conclusion:

As compared to DW, ozonated water has no significant deleterious effect on the corrosion resistance of the Co-Cr frameworks and can be used for cleaning the removable partial dentures.

The association between denture care and oral hygiene habits, oral hygiene knowledge and periodontal status of geriatric patients wearing removable partial dentures

Purpose:

This study aims to evaluate the association of the denture care with oral hygiene habits, knowledge and periodontal status geriatric patients wearing removable partial denture (RPD) and to compare the relationship between denture cleaning and tooth brushing frequency.

Patients and methods:

In total, 553 participants wearing RPD for at least 6 months and aged 65–86 years were asked to complete a questionnaire following the clinical examination. Chisquare analysis and Fisher’s exact test utilized to analyze the data.

Results:

A significant relationship was found between the frequency of smoking, denture age, overnight denture wearing, denture stomatitis and denture cleaning (p<0.05). 54.10% of the participants reporting that they did not have information about denture care had poor denture cleaning. Among patients brushing once per day, 26.34% had a good level of denture cleaning; whereas, this was 39.40% for those brushing three times in a day.

Conclusion:

The type of advice (verbal or written) and oral hygiene habits demonstrated a more significant impact on the cleaning level of dentures than the socioeconomic level, smoking, overnight use, denture age. The success of denture maintenance might depend on the patients’ knowledge of denture care and hygiene habits and geriatric patients’ motivation.

Denture Stomatitis: Causes, Cures and Prevention

Removable dentures are worn by 20% of the UK population and two thirds of these individuals have denture stomatitis. Poor oral hygiene is commonplace among this group, as is smoking and xerostomia, which also contribute to the development of denture stomatitis. A complex polymicrobial biofilm is able to proliferate on the surface of denture materials and matures to form visible denture plaque. This denture plaque biofilm stimulates a local inflammatory process that is detectable clinically as erythema, and hyperplasia. Systemically, denture plaque represents a potential risk factor for systemic disease, in particular aspiration pneumonia. Respiratory pathogens have been detected in the denture plaque and overnight denture wear has been linked to an increased risk of aspiration pneumonia. There is a general lack of evidence on the adequate management of denture stomatitis and we present a protocol for use in the primary care setting.
