Effectiveness of a machine-assisted healthy physical fitness promotion program for community elderly

BACKGROUND

Maintaining physical fitness is important for health of the elderly. How to implement an effective and efficient model is a practical issue. A healthy physical fitness promotion program with machine-assisted exercises was designed for elderly and executed in a community in 2015 and 2016. The program was implemented for 10 to 12 weeks with two (group 1) or three (group 2) sessions per week, and functional fitness tests were conducted before, at the end, and 3 months after the training. This study is to investigate the effectiveness of machine-assisted physical fitness promotion program for the community elderly.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis was conducted on the participants' data, including sex, age, height, weight, waist-hip ratio, grip strength, back stretch, chair sit-and-reach, 30-second chair stand, 30-second arm curl, 2-minute step, single-leg standing, 8-ft up-and-go, and body composition. The differences in test results before, at the end, and 3 months after the training and the percentage change at different time intervals between the two groups were compared.

RESULTS

After training, body mass index in group 2 and the test completion time for 8-ft up-and-go in group 1 decline significantly; furthermore, significant increase was noted in the height and number of times of 2-minute step in both groups, and grip strength, number of times of their 30-second arm curl, and 30-second chair stand in group 2. The training effect sustained 3 months after the training in height and number of times of 2-minute step in both groups, and grip strength, number of times of their 30-second arm curl, and 30-second chair stand in group 2.

CONCLUSION

This study discovered that 10 to 12 weeks of machine-assisted exercise training can improve the elderly community members' body composition, muscle strength, muscle endurance, agility, dynamic balance, and cardiorespiratory endurance. Moreover, with three sessions per week, its effects were even maintained for 3 months after the training.

Quality of life and oral health in elderly

Background

We want to assess quality of life in elderly patients in relation to the number of remaining teeth, the number of ingested drugs and xerostomía and to determine the correlation between an increased intake of drugs and a greater feeling of dry mouth and to know the most commonly used measures to control xerostomia.

Material and Methods

30 subjects aged between 65 and 95 years (14 males, 16 females) completed the OHIP questionnaire to determine quality of life. For oral status, the number of remaining teeth according to WHO criteria and xerostomia using the xerostomia index (XI) were studied. In cases of dry mouth sensation, the measures to alleviate it were asked.

Results

The average quality of life according to the OHIP rate is 19.23 (Dt = 10.58), being 56 the worst quality of life. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicates that quality of life is not related to the number of remaining teeth (r = -0.046; p = 0.810) nor the number of ingested drugs (r = 0.226; p = 0.23) but a greater sensation of dry mouth is related to a poorer quality of life (r = 0.678; p = 0.230). There is no association between the number of ingested drugs and the xerostomia index (r = 0.144; p = 0.447). The most frequently measures used against dry mouth were drinking water (21 subjects) and sugarless candies (15 subjects).

Conclusions

Quality of life is not related to the number of remaining teeth nor the number of ingested drugs. However, a higher level of xerostomia was significantly associated with a poorer quality of life. There is no association between the number of drugs ingested and xerostomia index. Sugarless candies and drinking water are the more frequently used measures to alleviate dry mouth.

Comparative Assessment of a New Holistic-Oriented and an Old Specialty-Specific Undergraduate Curriculum in Removable Prosthodontics: A Study Based on Senior Students' Perceptions

PURPOSE

A survey was conducted in the Dental School, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece, (i) to assess the perceptions and experiences of senior dental students, Classes of 2014 and 2015, toward the old, specialty-specific (OC) and new, holistic-oriented (NC) undergraduate curriculum, respectively, in removable prosthodontics and (ii) to identify areas of improvement in prosthodontic training.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Structural components of both curricula were collected, including the total number of (i) laboratory/lecture/clinical training hours, (ii) written examinations, (iii) mandatory clinical cases, and (iv) European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits. A 20-item closed-type questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale was distributed in two consecutive groups of seniors, Classes of 2014 (n = 54) and 2015 (n = 57); 54 OC and 57 NC senior students filled out the questionnaire.

RESULTS

A greater percentage of NC students stated that (i) they felt less confident to carry out jaw relation recording and removable partial denture metal framework design and (ii) the time allocated for clinical training was less sufficient. Students of both curricula reported that the laboratory courses and lectures contributed little to their clinical performance. Implant restorations and prosthetic management of patients with craniomandibular disorders were the most popular treatment options that the respondents felt that should be incorporated in the undergraduate curriculum.

CONCLUSIONS

As a general trend, students completing the revised curriculum reported more difficulties during their training and felt more insecure about their clinical competences. To enhance students' self-confidence in prosthodontics, more effective preclinical training methods, introduction of additional treatment options, and alternative educational methods should be considered.
