Effects of denture maintenance on satisfaction levels of Taiwanese elderly using removable partial dentures: a pilot study

Association between Oral Hygiene Information Sources and Daily Dental and Denture Care Practices in Urban Community-Dwelling Older Adults

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the sources of daily oral hygiene information among urban community-dwelling older adults in Athens, Greece and associate them with their dental and denture care habits. One hundred and fifty-four older adults (aged 71.7 ± 9.2 years) participated in the study, and their dental status, denture use, daily oral care habits according to current gerodontology recommendations, and oral care information sources were investigated. Daily oral hygiene practices were poor, and a small number of individuals recalled having received oral hygiene advice from a dentist. Only 41.7% of the 139 dentate participants performed toothbrushing with fluoride-based toothpaste at least twice a day, and 35.9% completed regular interdental cleaning. Among 54 denture wearers, 68.5% removed their denture(s) at night, and 54% cleaned them at least twice a day. Oral hygiene information sources included dentists (for approximately half of the participants), media, friends/relatives, non-dental health care providers and dental technicians. Dentate participants who had received oral hygiene information from dentists had a greater probability of brushing their teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day (p = 0.049, OR = 2.15) and performing regular interdental cleaning (p < 0.001, OR = 29.26). Denture wearers who had received instructions about denture hygiene from dentists were more likely to use a brush and mild soap (p = 0.016, OR = 14.67) and remove their denture(s) at night (p = 0.003, OR = 8.75). Dentists should improve their oral health prevention and promotion strategies for their older patients.

The Effect of Several Factors on the Patient's Satisfaction with the Complete Dentures and the Correlation with the Adaptation Period

OBJECTIVE

A great number of patients are completely satisfied with a regular denture, on the other hand, numerous patients are still not satisfied with their denture functions despite proper denture manufacture in relation to prosthetic standards.

AIM

To estimate the parameters of satisfaction for patients to improve the health care quality of patients and evaluate the effect of the adaptation period.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 136 patients who participated in this study were patients with complete dentures (CD), after placement of the CD, the patients were asked some questions (about esthetics, phonetics, comfort, quality of fit, and the masticatory efficiency) and the satisfaction of patients was evaluated by using Likert's scale, then recorded four readings, first at the placement visit, second after 1 month, third after 45 days, and last after 2 months.

RESULTS

The female patients' satisfaction related to phonetics was about 37.8% at the placement visit, but about 91.2% after 2 months; the male patients' satisfaction related to phonetics was about 44% at the placement visit, then 94.6% after 2 months; the female patients' satisfaction as related to esthetics was about 56.6% at the placement visit, but was about 89.8% after 2 months; the male patients' satisfaction as related to esthetics was about 68% at the placement visit, but about 89.4% after 2 months.

CONCLUSION

The satisfaction of the patient with their CD is affected by many factors such as phonetics, esthetics, comfort levels, the quality of fitness of the denture, and the mastication. The differences between gender in satisfaction in all parameters were non-significant, that is, p > 0.001. The adaptation period has an effect on the satisfaction rate of the completely edentulous patient with their CD.

Traditional Removable Partial Dentures versus Implant-Supported Removable Partial Dentures: A Retrospective, Observational Oral Health-Related Quality-of-Life Study

Removable partial dentures (RPD) are still a valid alternative for the restoration of missing teeth. Additionally, implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPD) represent a valid alternative as it allows to avoid the use of clasps and increase stability. The objective of this study was to evaluate through an OHIP-14 questionnaire the level of satisfaction and quality of life (QoL) of patients treated before RPD and then with ISRPD. Twenty patients were rehabilitated with traditional RPDs, and after one year the prosthesis was modified into ISRPD, by inserting an implant and a ball or locator attachment. At the end of both phases, patients completed the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The collected data were statistically analyzed through the Wilcoxon U test, as overall OHIP score and difference between treatments. The mean of the OHIP summary (range from 0 to 56) in the RPD Group was 20.95 (±5.27). In the ISRPD Group it was 13.95 (±3.91), with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two Groups. The same findings were highlighted for the differences between groups in every domain question. Patients showed significant improvements after rehabilitation in all areas of investigation, stating how the transformation of a removable prosthesis into an implant-supported one can improve patients’ QoL with benefits in chewing ability, aesthetics and self-satisfaction.

Removable partial dentures: Patient satisfaction and complaints in Makkah City, KSA

Objective

To assess the satisfaction level and complaints among patients using different types of removable partial dentures (RPDs) in Makkah city, KSA.

Methods

In this retrospective study, 551 patients who had received RPDs between February and December 2015 were contacted by telephone. One hundred patients responded, and 60 of them agreed to participate in the study. The participants were asked two questions to determine their satisfaction level and complaints with RPD usage, eating, communication, and aesthetics. Data were analysed statistically by chi-square, analysis of variance, and Scheffe's tests.

Results

Of 60 patients, 35% were very satisfied, 21.7% were satisfied and 23.3% were nearly satisfied. However, only 20% were not satisfied. There were no significant differences in mean RPD satisfaction among different age groups and between sexes (P > 0.01). There was a significant difference in satisfaction among RPD type (P < 0.01). However, no significant differences were recorded between either metal and acrylic, or acrylic and flexible RPDs (P < 0.01). As many as 26.7% of respondents complained of aesthetic problems, 16.7% complained of pain during mastication, 10% complained of gag reflex, and 8.3% complained of phonetic problems. However, the majority of respondents (38.3%) had no complaints.

Conclusion

The majority of patients were satisfied with the quality of removable partial dentures treatment in Makkah city hospitals. Oral rehabilitation with RPDs should be applied with care when patients have high aesthetic demands.

Oral health-related quality of life of removable partial denture wearers and related factors

This study aims to investigate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a group of removable partial denture (RPD) wearers in Shiraz (Iran), using the Persian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Two hundred removable partial denture wearers had completed a questionnaire regarding patients' demographic characteristics and denture-related factors. In addition, the OHIP-14 questionnaire was filled out by interviewing the patients. Two measures of interpreting the OHIP-14 scales were utilised: OHIP-14 sum and OHIP-14 prevalence. The relationship of the patients' demographic characteristics and denture-related factors, with their OHRQoL was investigated. The mean OHIP-14 sum and OHIP-14 prevalence of RPD wearers were 13·80 (±10·08) and 44·5%, respectively. The most problematic aspects of OHIP-14 were physical disability and physical pain. Twenty-seven percentage and 24% of participants had reported meal interruption and eating discomfort, respectively. OHIP-14 prevalence and OHIP-14 sum were found to be significantly associated with factors representing RPD wearer's oral health such as self-reported oral health and frequency of denture cleaning. Furthermore, OHIP-14 prevalence and OHIP-14 sum were significantly associated with factors related to frequency of denture use such as hours of wearing the denture during the day and wearing the denture while eating and sleeping. Therefore, it can be concluded that the OHRQoL of the patients of the study was generally not optimal and found to be strongly associated with oral health.
