Research supervisors' views of barriers and enablers for research projects undertaken by medical students; a mixed methods evaluation of a post-graduate medical degree research project program

BACKGROUND

Medical degree programs use scholarly activities to support development of basic research skills, critical evaluation of medical information and promotion of medical research. The University of Sydney Doctor of Medicine Program includes a compulsory research project. Medical student projects are supervised by academic staff and affiliates, including biomedical science researchers and clinician-academics. This study investigated research supervisors' observations of the barriers to and enablers of successful medical student research projects.

METHODS

Research supervisors (n = 130) completed an anonymous, online survey after the completion of the research project. Survey questions targeted the research supervisors' perceptions of barriers to successful completion of projects and sources of support for their supervision of the student project. Data were analysed by descriptive statistics and using manifest content analysis. Further quantitative investigation was made by cross-tabulation according to prior research supervision experience.

RESULTS

Research supervisors reported that students needed both generic skills (75%) and research-based skills (71%) to successfully complete the project. The major barrier to successful research projects was the lack of protected time for research activities (61%). The assessment schedule with compulsory progress milestones enabled project completion (75%), and improved scientific presentation (90%) and writing (93%) skills. Supervisors requested further support for their students for statistics (75%), scientific writing (51%), and funding for projects (52%). Prior research supervision experience influenced the responses. Compared to novice supervisors, highly experienced supervisors were significantly more likely to want students to be allocated dedicated time for the project (P < 0.01) and reported higher rates of access to expert assistance in scientific writing, preparing ethics applications and research methodology. Novice supervisors reported higher rates of unexpected project delays and data acquisition problems (P < 0.05). Co-supervision was favoured by experienced supervisors but rejected by novice supervisors.

CONCLUSIONS

Both generic and research-related skills were important for medical student research project success. Overall, protected research time, financial and other academic support were identified as factors that would improve the research project program. Prior research supervision experience influences perceptions of program barriers and enablers. These findings will inform future support needs for projects and research supervisor training for the research supervision role.

Promoting Career Selection Through a Comprehensive Enrichment Experience: A Review of the Canadian Radiation Oncology Summer Studentship

PURPOSE

The impact that early clinical exposure to radiation oncology has on medical students' understanding of oncology and career choice is understudied. This study aims to review the experience and outcomes of medical students who participated in the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology-Canadian Radiation Oncology Foundation 6-week summer studentship.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Medical students who participated in the nationally funded studentship from 2014 to 2018 were asked to fill out a survey after completing the program. The survey asked about student experience related to radiation oncology before the studentship, student satisfaction with the studentship (scale of 1-5; 5 = outstanding, 3 = meets expectations, 1 = unsatisfactory), and student willingness to recommend it to other students (scale of 1-10; 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = neutral, 10 = strongly agree). The effect of studentship on interest in the specialty was assessed (scale of 1-10; 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = neutral, 10 = strongly agree), including intent to direct their career toward radiation oncology. Match rates to radiation oncology residency are reported for students who participated in the studentship from 2013 to 2016.

RESULTS

All 31 students responded to the survey. Overall, the program was highly rated: inclusion of a broad range of clinical problems (mean = 4.6/5); opportunity to learn assessment, investigation, and management (mean = 4.2/5); and overall educational value (mean = 4.8/5). Poststudentship, most students reported an increased interest in oncology (76%, n = 22/29), and specifically radiation oncology (83%, n = 24/29). They would highly recommend this program to another medical student (mean = 9.8/10). The average percentage of these students entering a radiation oncology career (30.5%) each year was higher than national residency match rates in radiation oncology (0.7%).

CONCLUSIONS

Clinical exposure to radiation oncology through a nationally funded Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology-Canadian Radiation Oncology Foundation summer studentship positively affected medical student interest in oncology. This study suggests a potential effect of the studentship program on career selection of radiation oncology.

Students' perceptions of peer-organized extra-curricular research course during medical school: a qualitative study

Early integration of research education into medical curricula is crucial for evidence-based practice. Yet, many medical students are graduating with no research experience due to the lack of such integration in their medical school programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a peer-organized, extra-curricular research methodology course on the attitudes of medical students towards research and future academic careers. Twenty one medical students who participated in a peer-organized research course were enrolled in three focus group discussions to explore their experiences, perceptions and attitudes towards research after the course. Discussions were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide, and were transcribed and thematically analyzed for major and minor themes identification. Our findings indicate that students’ perceptions of research changed after the course from being difficult initially to becoming possible. Participants felt that their research skills and critical thinking were enhanced and that they would develop research proposals and abstracts successfully. Students praised the peer-assisted teaching approach as being successful in enhancing the learning environment and filling the curricular gap. In conclusion, peer-organized extra-curricular research courses may be a useful option to promote research interest and skills of medical students when gaps in research education in medical curricula exist.

Introducing medical students to careers in medical education: the student track at an annual medical education conference

Few avenues exist to familiarize medical students with careers as clinician-educators, and the clinician-educator career pathway has not been well defined. In this article, the authors describe how they integrated a career-oriented student track into the 2011 Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (NEGEA) annual retreat to introduce students to careers in medical education. Annual education conferences are principal sources of educational scholarship, networking, collaboration, and information sharing; as such, they represent attractive venues for early exposure to the culture of medical education. The authors' goal in creating the NEGEA conference student track was to excite students about careers in medical education by providing them with an array of opportunities for active involvement in both student-specific and general conference activities.The authors draw from their experience to provide a guide for recruiting student participants to career-building student tracks. They also offer a guide for developing future student tracks, based on their experience and grounded in social cognitive career theory. Although their focus is on medical education, they believe these guides will be useful for educators planning a conference-based student track in any field.
