Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vascular endothelial growth factor is an endothelial-specific growth factor that promotes endothelial cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival; mediates endothelium-dependent vasodilatation; induces microvascular hyperpermeability; and participates in interstitial matrix remodeling. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between +405 G/C polymorphism of vascular endothelial growth factor and the risk of liver rejection in liver transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study included 124 patients with liver disease that led to liver transplant. There were 22 patients who experienced histologically proven acute liver rejection, and the other 102 patients showed no rejection. Both groups were matched for sex and age. The VEGF+405 G/C polymorphism was evaluated by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism method. RESULTS Our analyses showed no significant relationships between genotypes and alleles of +405 G/C and risk of acute liver transplant rejection. CONCLUSIONS Our report indicated that there was no association between the carrier states of +405 G/C gene polymorphism of vascular endothelial growth factor and acute rejection or nonrejection of liver transplant.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the associations between polymorphisms of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with recurrent implantation failure (RIF). METHODS We performed the systematic review and meta-analysis by searching databases of PubMed, EMBASE, OVID, and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) for studies that evaluated the associations between VEGF polymorphisms with RIF. Meta-analysis was performed if the polymorphism was studied by more than two case-control studies. Data were analyzed using R software. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported to assess the associations. RESULTS Nine VEGF polymorphisms (-1154G > A, -460T > C, +405G > C, -7C > T, -634C > G, -2578C > A, +936C > T, 5C > T, -583C > T) were systematically reviewed. Meta-analysis was performed on VEGF -1154 G > A polymorphism. Three case-control studies consisted of 683 women were included in the quantitative meta-analysis (305 RIF patients and 378 controls). Results showed that VEGF -1154A allele was significantly associated with RIF (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.08-1.78, P-value = 0.01). The dominant genetic model showed that VEGF 1154AA plus VEGF 1154AG genotypes were more frequent in RIF patients than VEGF 1154GG genotype (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.10-2.20, P-value = 0.01). However, the result under the recessive genetic model showed no significant difference (OR 1.67, 95% CI 0.92-3.03, P-value = 0.09). CONCLUSION VEGF -1154A allele may serve as one of the predisposing factors of RIF. Women with VEGF 1154 AA/GA genotypes were at higher risk of RIF. However, we should consider the haplotype effect of VEGF polymorphisms in future studies.

Abstract
Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most common and severe complications of lupus. However, the mechanisms for renal damage have not been well elucidated. There are evidences show that glomerular endothelial cells (GECs) are damaged in LN. Immune complexes can deposit in subendothelial area and could affect GEC functions. In the present study, we used heat-aggregated gamma globulin (HAGG) to simulate immune complexes and investigated their effects on GEC functions. Our results revealed that HAGG impaired different aspect of the GEC functions. HAGG changed cell morphology, upregulated the expression of active caspase-3, inhibited angiogenesis, and increased NO production in GECs. These results provide new clues for the mechanisms of renal damage and the pathology of LN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to detect the effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk. METHODS Associated studies were extracted from the China Biological Medicine Database (CBM), and PubMed on June 10, 2018, and applicable investigations were pooled and analyzed by meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3. RESULTS VEGF levels was associated with SLE risk (mean differences (MD) =196.02, 95% CI: 135.29-256.75, P < 0.00001), and VEGF levels was associated with active SLE risk (MD =77.51, 95% CI: 10.98-144.05, P = 0.02). We also found that VEGF levels was associated with SLE developing into lupus nephritis (LN) risk (MD =223.16, 95% CI: 144.38-301.93, P < 0.00001). However, VEGF -634G/C gene polymorphism (rs2010963) was not associated with SLE risk. CONCLUSIONS VEGF levels was associated with SLE risk, active SLE risk and SLE developing into LN risk. However, there was no an association between VEGF -634G/C gene polymorphism and SLE risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Levels of circulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (a potent endothelial-cell-specific angiogenic factor) have been correlated with disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In addition, several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including the VEGFA -2578C/A, have been associated with RA in some populations. By contrast, the role of different VEGFA SNPs in the susceptibility to SLE has received little attention. Thus, the present study aimed to determine whether the VEGFA -2578C/A, -1154G/A and -634G/C polymorphisms confer risk or were associated with reduced risk of RA or SLE in a Mexican population. METHODS The present study included 903 women from Mexico: 405 were patients with RA, 282 had SLE and 216 were healthy individuals. The genotypes were obtained with TaqMan probes. RESULTS The data obtained in the present study suggest that the VEGFA -2578C/A and -634G/C polymorphisms are not risk factors for RA or SLE; however, VEGFA -1154G/A was associated with reduced risk in women with RA (odds ratio = 0.6, pc = 0.0051) but not with SLE (odds ratio = 0.7, pc = 0.13). CONCLUSIONS The present study is the first to document an association between VEGFA -1154G/A and reduced risk in women with RA but not with SLE.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene polymorphisms that are associated with various female infertility disorders. A total of 116 women diagnosed with RIF and 218 control subjects were genotyped for the VEGF -2578C>A, -1154G>A, -634C>G and 936C>T polymorphisms using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. The VEGF -2578AA genotype was associated with an increased prevalence (≥4) of RIF [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.77; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.10-7.02; P=0.031], whereas the VEGF -634CG+GG genotype was associated with an increased incidence of total RIF (AOR=2.03; 95% CI=1.02-4.05; P=0.044) and ≥4 RIF (AOR=3.16; 95% CI=1.19-8.37; P=0.021). The results of the haplotype analysis indicated that -2578A/-1154A/-634G/936C (AOR=1.76; 95% CI=1.03-3.00; P=0.040 for total RIF and AOR=2.11; 95% CI=1.12-3.97; P=0.021 for ≥4 RIF) was associated with the occurrence of RIF. In addition, it was revealed that there was a significant difference in serum prolactin level associated with the VEGF -634C>G polymorphism (P=0.013). Therefore the findings of the present study indicate that the VEGF -2578AA genotype, -634G allele and -2578A/-1154A/-634G/936C haplotype may be genetic markers for susceptibility to RIF. However, further studies on VEGF promoter polymorphisms that include an independent randomized-controlled population are required to confirm these results.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the relation between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene polymorphism in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and lupus related neuropsychiatric manifestations. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty adult SLE patients recruited from the Rheumatology and Neurology departments of Cairo University hospitals were classified into two groups; Group A: 30 patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations (NPSLE) and Group B: 30 patients without. For both groups the SNP G1612A (rs10434) of the VEGF gene was genotyped by real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS Statistically significant difference was found in genotype and allele frequencies between both groups (AA [70% vs 13.3%, p<0.001] and GG [10% vs 66.7%, p<0.001]). CONCLUSION Polymorphism in the gene coding for VEGF may be associated with increased incidence of neuropsychiatric lupus in SLE patients.

Abstract
Background Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important angiogenic factor and may be connected with chronic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) to some extent. However, previous researches about the relationship between the +405G>C (dbSNP: rs2010963) polymorphism in VEGF gene and the risk of IMIDs are controversial and inconsistent. So we conducted this meta-analysis to assess whether the relationship between the +405G>C polymorphism in the 5'-UTR region of VEGF gene and IMID susceptibility exists. Methods Our literature search was conducted on the PubMed, Embase, Web of science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Biomedical databases to retrieve for eligible studies. Odds ratios as well as their 95 % confidence intervals were utilized to deduce the possible relationship. Results A total number of 5175 patients with IMIDs and 7069 healthy controls from 27 case-control studies were included. For the overall eligible data collected in our meta-analysis, there was no marked relationship between +405G>C polymorphism and the risk of IMIDs. However, subgroup analysis by ethnicity suggested that +405C allele could be a protective factor for IMIDs in Asians, whereas an opposite conclusion was drawn in Caucasians. Conclusion Thus, we may come to the conclusion that the VEGF +405G>C polymorphism could be associated with IMIDs, and the correlation might vary with ethnic groups.

Abstract
The role of VEGF -634G/C polymorphism has been involved in the investigations of susceptibility to autoimmune diseases, but the conclusion remains controversial. Here, we have performed a meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between them. All relevant articles updating to August 2013 were searched in PubMed and EMBASE. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) based on the available articles were calculated. A total of 24 independent studies associated with autoimmune disease were analyzed in our research. The results show that VEGF -634G/C polymorphism was associated with susceptibility to autoimmune disease in Asian population (C vs. G: OR=0.88, 95% CI: 0.80-0.96, P=0.543; CC vs. GG: OR=0.77, 95% CI: 0.63-0.93, P=0.787; CC+GC vs. GG: OR=0.80, 95% CI: 0.67-0.96, P=0.080 by random effects model). Nevertheless, no significant associations were found in total population or in other stratified groups. In the current meta-analysis, we reveal a significant association between VEGF -634G/C polymorphism and susceptibility to autoimmune diseases in Asian population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to elucidate the roles of six pro-angiogenic factors, namely, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor (PlGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS A group of 75 patients with SLE and a control group of 40 healthy volunteers were recruited. Angiogenic factors were tested through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) measurement. The angiogenic activities of the patients with SLE and the healthy controls were assessed and a correlation analysis of these angiogenic factors was conducted. RESULTS A much higher level of angiogenic activity was shown in the serum of patients with SLE than that of the healthy controls, yet no statistically significant difference was found in the angiogenic activities of active SLE and inactive SLE. Serum VEGF level in the active SLE group was significantly higher than that in the control group and the inactive SLE group, and serum HGF level was strongly positively correlated with VEGF in all SLE groups; meanwhile, there was also a statistically significant positive correlation between TNF-alpha and VEGF in all SLE groups. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between serum VEGF level and bFGF level in the active SLE group. There was a slightly negative correlation between serum HGF level and TGF-beta level in the SLE group, but this negativity did not reach the significance level. Likewise, positive correlation was also shown in the serum VEGF level and PlGF level, yet not in bFGF with PlGF. CONCLUSION Circulating serum angiogenic cytokines may be disease markers of SLE activity. Anti-angiogenic agents such as thalidomide and endogenous angiogenesis inhibitors such as endostatin are potentially effective and promising therapies in the treatment of SLE.

Abstract
Despite the fact that rheumatic diseases constitute a common health care problem in Thailand, improvements in rheumatology education, research and health care are still required. Low numbers of rheumatologists, their uneven distribution, lack of time to perform both clinical and basic research, lack of patient compliance and restricted access to effective medication comprise some of the barriers that need to be overcome to establish rheumatology education, research and care with a Western-country benchmark. The annual academic activities provided by the Thai Rheumatism Association for rheumatologists, general practitioners, allied health professionals and patients can advance only some forms of education and health care. Better cooperation between the Thai Rheumatism Association, the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, the Ministry of Public Health and the Thai government is needed to improve rheumatology training, care and research in the country.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has long been recognized as a hypotensive mediator. Little is known regarding the contribution of polymorphisms in VEGF gene to essential hypertension (EH), however. We aimed to investigate the association between +405 VEGF C/G single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and occurrence of EH in a sample of patients with diabetes. A study population of 474 subjects with diabetes of which 45.6% (216) had EH was enrolled in this study. Interviews and physical examinations were performed in a clinical setting. Subjects were matched in baseline anthropometric and biochemical characteristics except for total cholesterol. Genotyping of +405 VEGF C/G (rs2010963) SNP was carried out using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The allelic distribution of the sample did not violate Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Subjects with EH had a higher frequency of G allele (P = 0.005). Additionally, those with EH had a significantly higher frequency of GG genotype (P = 0.015). In multivariate logistic regression models controlling for possible confounders, having GG against CC genotype was associated with an odds ratio of 2.51 (95% CI: 1.44-4.38; P = 0.001). Moreover, presence of each G allele was linked to a 1.58-fold increase in risk of having EH (95% CI: 1.200-2.086; P = 0.001). In conclusion, +405 VEGF C/G SNP is associated with EH in patients with diabetes, suggesting presence of G allele and GG or CG genotype confer susceptibility towards EH.
