Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the mediating effects of maternal perception of child weight (weight perception) and concern about overweight (weight concern) on the paths between child weight and maternal feeding practices. SETTING Pudong District, Shanghai, China. PARTICIPANTS A convenience sample of 1164 mothers who were primary caregivers of preschool children. RESULTS Sixty per cent of the mothers perceived their overweight/obese children as normal weight or even underweight. The disagreement between actual child weight and maternal weight perception was statistically significant (Kappa = 0·212, P < 0·001). Structural equation modelling indicated that weight perception fully mediated the relationship between child BMI Z-scores and pressure to eat. Weight concern fully mediated the relationships between child BMI Z-scores and the other three feeding practices. The serial mediating effects of weight perception and concern were statistically significant for the paths between child BMI Z-score and monitoring (β = 0·035, P < 0·001), restriction (β = 0·022, P < 0·001), and food as a reward (β = -0·017, P < 0·05). CONCLUSION Child weight may influence maternal feeding practices through weight perception and concern. Thus, interventions are needed to increase the accuracy of weight perception, which may influence several maternal feeding practices and thereby contribute to child health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify factors influencing Black immigrant mothers' perceptions and concerns about child weight and to compare children's diet quality according to these perceptions and concerns. DESIGN Mothers' perceptions and concerns about child weight were assessed with sex-specific figure rating scales and the Child Feeding Questionnaire, respectively. Participants' weights and heights were measured and characterised using WHO references. Children's dietary intakes were estimated using a 24-h dietary recall. Children's diet quality was evaluated using the relative proportion of their energy intake provided by ultra-processed products, which were identified with the NOVA classification. χ2 tests, multivariate logistic regressions and t tests were performed. SETTING Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS Black immigrant mothers of Sub-Saharan African and Caribbean origin (n 186) and their 6-12-year-old children. RESULTS Among mothers, 32·4 % perceived their child as having overweight while 48·4 % expressed concerns about child weight. Girls and children with overweight or obesity were significantly more likely to be perceived as having overweight by their mothers than boys and normal-weight children, respectively. Mothers of children living with obesity, but not overweight, were significantly more likely to be concerned about their child's weight than mothers of normal-weight children. Children's diet quality did not differ according to mothers' perceptions and concerns. CONCLUSIONS Children's gender and weight status were major determinants of perceptions and concerns about child weight among Black immigrant mothers. Including knowledge about mothers' perceptions and concerns about child weight will help nutrition professionals develop interventions tailored to specific family needs within the context of their cultural backgrounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated associations between stress (general stress, parenting distress, and household chaos) and adiposity among parents of young children. METHODS The sample consisted of 49 mothers and 61 fathers from 70 families with young children living in Ontario, Canada. Linear regression using generalized estimating equations was used to investigate associations between stress measures and BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), and percent fat mass. RESULTS General stress was significantly associated with BMI ( β ^ = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.04-1.03) and WC ( β ^ = 1.44; 95% CI: 0.10-2.77). Parenting distress was significantly associated with BMI ( β ^ = 0.16; 95% CI: 0.02-0.31), WC ( β ^ = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.04-0.75), and WHtR ( β ^ = 0.003; 95% CI: 0.001-0.005). Household chaos was significantly associated with all adiposity measures (BMI: β ^ = 0.20 [95% CI: 0.08-0.33]; WC: β ^ = 0.48 [95% CI: 0.21-0.75]; WHtR: β ^ = 0.003 [95% CI: 0.001-0.005]; percent fat mass: β ^ = 0.29 [95% CI: 0.08-0.49]). CONCLUSIONS General stress, parenting distress, and household chaos are associated with adiposity among parents of young children. Future research should elucidate mechanisms by which this occurs and elucidate how this risk may be mitigated.

Abstract
Background: Failure to recognize children's overweight status by parents may contribute to children's risk for obesity. We examined two methods of measuring mothers' perceptions of children's weight and factors associated with weight perception inaccuracy. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses of clinical and self-report data from 287 Mexican-heritage mother-child dyads. Mothers identified their child's weight category using a scale (e.g., "normal/overweight/obese") and a visual silhouette scale (11 child gender-specific weight-varying images). Children's height and weight were measured to calculate body mass index (BMI). Chi-square tests examined associations between categorical, silhouette, and BMI percentile categories of children's weight. Bivariate logistic regression analyses examined factors associated with mothers' inaccuracy of their children's weight. Results: Only 13% of mothers accurately classified their child as obese using the categorical scale, while 78% accurately classified their child as obese using the silhouette scale. Mothers were more likely to underestimate their child's weight using BMI categories (62%) compared to using the silhouette scale (23%). Predictors of mothers' underestimation using the categorical method were child sex [female] (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.02-3.86), child age [younger age] (AOR = 10.39; 95% CI: 4.16-25.92 for ages 5-6 years), and mother's weight status (overweight AOR = 2.99; 95% CI: 1.05-8.51; obese AOR = 5.19; 95% CI: 1.89-14.18). Child BMI was the only predictor of mothers' overestimation (AOR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.85-0.94) using the silhouette method. Conclusions: Using silhouette scales to identify children's body weight may be a more accurate tool for clinicians and interventionists to activate parents' awareness of unhealthy weight in children compared to using traditional categorical weight-labeling methods.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Previous research has shown that parenting factors related to feeding style affect child weight and that Latino families are especially at risk for pediatric obesity. The goal of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between parental feeding style and child body mass index (BMI) in Latino families. METHOD Latino parents of children between the ages of 2 and 8 ( N = 124) completed a survey on parental feeding styles, acculturation, and demographics. The outcome variable was child BMI. RESULTS Among respondents, 89% were mothers, 72% were overweight or obese, and 40% reported an indulgent feeding style. Children had a mean age of 59 months ( SD = 23.8) and a mean BMI z score of 0.77 ( SD = 1.14). A demanding parental feeding style was associated with lower child BMI z score, r = -.179, p < .05, and higher acculturation level, r = .213, p < .05. CONCLUSIONS Findings from the current study can be used to inform health care practitioners of the need to use culturally sensitive interventions that consider parents' feeding behaviors. Future research is warranted in the area of ethnic variations of parenting and how these affect feeding and obesity in this highly vulnerable population.

Abstract
In the USA, African American children residing in rural areas are disproportionately affected by childhood obesity. One strategy for preventing childhood obesity is helping caregivers to recognize their child is overweight or obese. The purpose of this study is to assess African American caregivers' perceived level of their child's obesity status and concordance between caregiver's reported height and weight of their children compared to the objective measure of their child's height and weight. Caregivers completed a paper-based survey about perceptions of their child's weight status including body silhouettes (n = 119) and self-reported their child's body mass index status (n = 68). Children's (n = 71) height and weight were objectively measured. Spearman rho and independent sample t tests were calculated to assess the relationship between caregiver's self-reported and objective BMI status. Caregiver's visually perceived their child's weight status to be underweight; yet, self-reported that their child's body mass index status was obese. The Spearman's rho correlation indicated a significant relationship between caregiver's self-reported and objective body mass index (r = .39, p < .001). The independent sample t test reflected that the mean self-reported body mass index and objective body mass index were statistically significant with calculated body mass index perception. The investigation of three different methods for assessing body mass index perceptions may contribute to the development of tailored programs and interventions that include counseling strategies that increase parental education about their child's body mass index.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to examine whether pre-pregnancy weight status was associated with maternal feeding beliefs and practices in the early post-partum period. METHODS This study uses secondary analysis of longitudinal data from Australian mothers. Participants (n = 486) were divided into two weight status groups based on self-reported pre-pregnancy weight and measured height: healthy weight (body mass index (BMI) <25 kg/m(2) ; n = 321) and overweight (BMI > 25 kg/m(2) ; n = 165). Feeding beliefs and practices were self-reported via an established questionnaire that assessed concerns about infant overeating and undereating, awareness of infant cues, feeding to a schedule and using food to calm. RESULTS Infants of overweight mothers were more likely to have been given solid foods in the previous 24 h (29% vs. 20%) and fewer were fully breastfed (50% vs. 64%). Multivariable regression analyses (adjusted for maternal education, parity, average infant weekly weight gain, feeding mode and introduction of solids) revealed that pre-pregnancy weight status was not associated with using food to calm, concern about undereating, awareness of infant cues or feeding to a schedule. However, feeding mode was associated with feeding beliefs and practices. CONCLUSIONS Although no evidence for a relationship between maternal weight status and early maternal feeding beliefs and practices was observed, differences in feeding mode and early introduction of solids were observed. The emergence of a relationship between feeding practices and maternal weight status may occur when the children are older, solid feeding is established and they become more independent in feeding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight/obesity in women of childbearing age is a serious public-health problem. In China, the incidence of maternal overweight/obesity has been increasing. However, there is not a meta-analysis to determine if pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is related to infant birth weight (BW) and offspring overweight/obesity. METHODS Three electronic bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL) were searched systematically from January 1970 to November 2012. The dichotomous data on pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and BW or offspring overweight/obesity were extracted. Summary statistics (odds ratios, ORs) were used by Review Manager, version 5.1.7. RESULTS After screening 665 citations from three electronic databases, we included 45 studies (most of high or medium quality). Compared with normal-weight mothers, pre-pregnancy underweight increased the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) (odds ratios [OR], 1.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.76-1.87); low BW (OR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.27-1.71). Pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity increased the risk of being large for gestational age (LGA) (OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.44-1.63; and OR, 2.08; 95% CI; 1.95-2.23), high BW (OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.44-1.63; and OR, 2.00; 95% CI; 1.84-2.18), macrosomia (OR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.42-1.97; and OR, 3.23; 95% CI, 2.39-4.37), and subsequent offspring overweight/obesity (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.77-2.13; and OR, 3.06; 95% CI, 2.68-3.49), respectively. Sensitivity analyses revealed that sample size, study method, quality grade of study, source of pre-pregnancy BMI or BW had a strong impact on the association between pre-pregnancy obesity and LGA. No significant evidence of publication bias was observed. CONCLUSIONS Pre-pregnancy underweight increases the risk of SGA and LBW; pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity increases the risk of LGA, HBW, macrosomia, and subsequent offspring overweight/obesity. A potential effect modification by maternal age, ethnicity, gestational weight gain, as well as the role of gestational diseases should be addressed in future studies.
