The Relationship Between Job Security and Employee Health

The relationship between perceived job security and employee health was examined in two manufacturing organizations. A significant relationship was found between health and job security using global measures of both constructs. Closer examination of the correlations among the subscales of the measures of health and perceived job security revealed different patterns of subscale relationships in two organizations. These results suggest that job security is an important determinant of employee health, and that inclusion of this construct in general models of stress and well-being may help to improve our understanding of work performance.

Type A and type behaviors and factors related to job satisfaction among male white-collar workers

Numerous studies have examined the health effects of Type A behavior and job satisfaction/dissatisfaction, but we know very little about the relationship between aspects of the work environment related to job satisfaction and the Type A behavior pattern. In the present study, we analyzed data concerning work Stressors, private aspects of life, and job satisfaction among male white-collar workers (n=657) in a large steel company, and identified the respective aspects of the work environment related to job satisfaction among groups divided by Type A/B behavior patterns.We found that the nature of predictors for job satisfaction varied with the behavior type. "Being not busy at work" (p<0.001) and "working more than 10 hours per day" (p<0.05) were significant predictors of job satisfaction among the Type A workers while "working less than 10 hours per day" (p<0.05) and "can learn new things at work" (p<0.01) were significant predictors of job satisfaction among the Type workers. "Work performance is evaluated" was a significant predictor of job satisfaction among all three behavior types (A, B, and A/B).Our results can provide information useful for the creation of programs to lower the level of job dissatisfaction and mental stress depending upon the behavior type of employees.

Assessing the construct validity of the job descriptive index: a review and meta-analysis

The construct validity of the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) was investigated by using a meta-analysis to summarize previous empirical studies that examined antecedents, correlates, and consequences of job satisfaction. In total, 79 unique correlates with a combined total of 1,863 correlations were associated with the JDI subdimensions. The construct validity of the JDI was supported by (a) acceptable estimates of internal consistency and test-retest reliability, (b) results that conform to a nomological network of job satisfaction relationships, and (c) demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity. Contrasting results with previous meta-analytic findings offered further support for the JDI's construct validity. Limitations of the JDI and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Effect of job satisfaction on stress, performance and health in self-paced repetitive work

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of job satisfaction on stress, performance and health in self-paced repetitive work. There were two groups of subjects. One group consisted of 41 subjects with a high score on job satisfaction and the second group consisted of an equal number of subjects with a low score on job satisfaction. The mean age and experience of high and low satisfied groups are respectively 34.63 and 13.60 and 34.14 and 15.51 years. The educational qualifications of all the workers were below primary level. The results of the study indicate that the low satisfied workers experience more stress and describe their job more unfavourably than the highly satisfied workers. It is also observed that the high satisfied workers are better performers and possess good health (fewer health complaints and good mental health) than that the dissatisfied workers. The findings of the study suggest that the quality of working life may be improved by increasing the job satisfaction of the workers.
