Abstract
Follistatin (FST), a folliculogenesis regulating protein, is found in relatively high concentrations in female ovarian tissues. FST acts as an antagonist to Activin, which is often elevated in human ovarian carcinoma, and thus may serve as a potential target for therapeutic intervention against ovarian cancer. The breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) is a known tumor suppressor gene in human breast cancer; however its role in ovarian cancer is not well understood. We performed microarray analysis on human ovarian carcinoma cell line SKOV3 that stably overexpress wild-type BRCA1 and compared with the corresponding empty vector-transfected clones. We found that stable expression of BRCA1 not only stimulates FST secretion but also simultaneously inhibits Activin expression. To determine the physiological importance of this phenomenon, we further investigated the effect of cellular BRCA1 on the FST secretion in immortalized ovarian surface epithelial (IOSE) cells derived from either normal human ovaries or ovaries of an ovarian cancer patient carrying a mutation in BRCA1 gene. Knock-down of BRCA1 in normal IOSE cells demonstrates down-regulation of FST secretion along with the simultaneous up-regulation of Activin expression. Furthermore, knock-down of FST in IOSE cell lines as well as SKOV3 cell line showed significantly reduced cell proliferation and decreased cell migration when compared with the respective controls. Thus, these findings suggest a novel function for BRCA1 as a regulator of FST expression and function in human ovarian cells.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network consists of eight National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers funded by the LAF between 2004 and 2008. The Network was created to accelerate the pace of progress in addressing the needs of the growing survivor community. METHODS This paper will briefly describe some of the salient issues surrounding the care of cancer survivors, and examine models of survivorship care that are being developed in individual Centers of Excellence (COE) as well as in the overall Network. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS As the recommendations and policies for optimal survivorship care have to be feasible and relevant in the community setting, each COE is partnered with up to three community affiliates. Through these partnerships, the community affiliates develop survivorship initiatives at their institutions with support and guidance from their primary COE.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess whether the desire to escape the psychological condition created by infertility (to have a baby) affected risk-taking behavior, with the possible relationship between ovarian cancer and infertility as the "accepted risk" to overcome infertility. 229 infertile and 204 fertile women who were patients at the Gulhane Military Medical Academy were administered a semistructured questionnaire. Increased ovarian cancer risk was accepted by 67.2% of the infertile women in order to have baby. There was no significant relation between the woman's age, duration of infertility, knowledge of the preventability and curability of ovarian cancer, or acceptable risk. These results indicate the importance to Turkish women of overcoming infertility.

Abstract
Breast cancer and endometrial cancer are the most common gynecologic malignancies of the postmenopausal period. As preventive medicine becomes the focus of interest, preventive oncology with special regard to these diseases will undoubtedly become a substantial part of the practicing oncologist's field of duties. The aim of this review is to summarize recommendations dealing with the risk assessment and prevention of breast and endometrial cancer. Obesity, the level of exercise and dietary factors are associated with breast cancer. The selective estrogen receptor modulators tamoxifen and raloxifen have both been shown to decrease the risk to the same extent. Patients at particularly high risk are being detected through the use of the Gail model, a well-known statistical model of risk. Other factors, such as breast density, the serum level of endogenous estrogen and the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms, have to be taken into consideration.
