The use of antibiotics in reptiles: a review

Egg Removal via Cloacoscopy in Three Dystocic Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis macularius)

Dystocia is a multifactorial, life-threatening condition commonly affecting pet reptiles. Treatment for dystocia can be either medical or surgical. Medical treatment usually involves the administration of oxytocin, but in some species or, in some cases, this treatment does not work as expected. Surgical treatments such as ovariectomy or ovariosalpingectomy are resolutive, but invasive in small-sized reptiles. In this paper, we describe three cases of post ovulatory egg retention in three leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) successfully treated through a cloacoscopic removal of the retained eggs, after a non resolutive medical treatment. The intervention was fast, non-invasive, and no procedure-related adverse effects were noted. The problem relapsed six months later in one animal, and a successful bilateral ovariosalpingectomy was performed. Cloacoscopy should be considered a valuable, non-invasive tool for egg removal in dystocic leopard geckos when the egg is accessible to manipulation. Recrudescence or complications such as adhesions, oviductal rupture, or the presence of ectopic eggs should recommend surgical intervention.

BACTERIAL IDENTIFICATION AND ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY FROM THE ABSCESSES OF CAPTIVE TORTOISES-CLINICAL ANTIBIOTIC RECOMMENDATIONS

Bacterial abscesses are commonly seen in tortoises. The morbidity and the resultant mortality are high. Multifactorial problems, antibiotics misapplication. and antibiotic-resistant bacteria make abscess treatment complicated and ineffective. This study identifies the etiological bacterial species and determines the best antibiotics for abscess treatment in captive tortoises. Sterile swab specimens from 40 tortoises with abscesses were analyzed using the Analytical Profile Index (API) system. Sixty-five bacteria species were identified covering facultative anaerobic gram-negative (n = 30, 46.2%), facultative anaerobic gram-positive (n = 19, 29.2%), and aerobic gram-negative bacteria (n = 16, 24.6%). The antibiotic sensitivity of these bacteria to 30 antibiotics was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer disk-diffusion method. Greater than 80% anaerobic gram-negative bacterial species showed sensitivity to amikacin and ceftazidime. Greater than 80% anaerobic gram-positive bacterial species were sensitive to amoxicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin, and penicillin. In addition, more than 80% aerobic gram-negative bacterial species were sensitive to ceftazidime, colistin sulphate, amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin, polymyxin B, and tobramycin. This study provides clinicians significant information for initial antibiotic options, which could elevate the abscess therapy success rate and improve the life quality of tortoises.

Pathology and Prevalence of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria: A Study of 398 Pet Reptiles

Reptiles are potential reservoirs of bacteria that could be transmitted, thus becoming a zoonotic hazard. (1) Background: This three-year investigation surveyed the pathological status of 398 pet reptiles: chelonians, snakes (venomous/non-venomous), and lizards. The main pathological entities found were related to the skin, the sensory organs, the digestive system, the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the urinary system, the genitalia, the osteo−muscular tract, surgical issues, tumors, and intoxications. (2) Methods: In 25 individuals treated with antibiotics, no clinical healing was recorded, for this reason, an antimicrobial resistance profile analysis of the 43 samples gathered was processed. An antibiogram was performed using the VITEK®2 ID-GP (bio-Mérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France) automated platform, with 22 bacterial strains being isolated. (3) Results: The statistics (ANOVA) revealed that the most common disease category was diseases of the digestive system, followed by diseases of the skin, respiratory system, nervous system, and reproductive system. A significant correlation (p < 0.01) between disease incidence and reptile species was reported, with correlations found between all species and diseases diagnosed. The most common bacteria isolated were Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomas (Xanthomonas) maltophilia, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Salmonella spp., but Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter spp., and Proteus spp. were also identified. (4) Conclusions: These microorganisms revealed degrees of resistance against penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, lincosamides, aminoglycosides, and tetracyclines. The animals can be categorized according to their sensitivity to diseases in the following order (most sensitive to least sensitive): chelonians, venomous snakes, non-venomous snakes, and lizards.

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for aerobic bacteria isolated from reptilian samples submitted to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory: 129 cases (2005-2016)

OBJECTIVE

To identify antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for aerobic bacteria isolated from reptilian samples and, from those patterns, identify antimicrobials that could be considered for empirical treatment of reptiles with suspected bacterial infections.

SAMPLES

129 bacterial isolates from 61 of 127 samples from 96 reptiles.

PROCEDURES

Medical records of reptiles (chelonian, crocodilian, lizard, and snake) presented to the zoological medical service of a veterinary teaching hospital between January 2005 and December 2016 were reviewed for submissions of patient samples for aerobic bacterial culture and susceptibility testing. Sample type, presence or absence of bacterial growth, and antimicrobial susceptibilities of isolated bacteria were recorded. The isolation frequency and the antimicrobial susceptibilities of bacterial genera and species were tabulated.

RESULTS

Pseudomonas spp and Enterococcus spp were the most frequently isolated gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, respectively. Isolates of gram-negative bacteria frequently had susceptibility to amikacin (86%), gentamicin (95%), tobramycin (92%), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (83%), and gram-positive bacteria frequently had susceptibility to ampicillin (83%), chloramphenicol (92%), doxycycline (100%), and gentamicin (100%). Isolates of gram-positive bacteria were consistently resistant to ceftazidime.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Aerobic bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility results for reptilian samples in this population indicated that aminoglycosides and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or ampicillin and doxycycline could be considered as options for the empirical treatment of reptiles with infections caused by gram-negative or gram-positive bacteria, respectively.
