Physiological regulation through learnt control of appetites by contingencies among signals from external and internal environments

Appetite 51, 419-27.] Claude Bernard's idea of stabilisation of bodily states, as realised in Walter B. Cannon's conception of homeostasis, took mathematical form during the 1940s in the principle that externally originating disturbance of a physiological parameter can feed an informative signal around the brain to trigger counteractive processes--a corrective mechanism known as negative feedback, in practice reliant on feedforward. Three decades later, enough was known of the physiology and psychology of eating and drinking for calculations to show how experimentally demonstrated mechanisms of feedforward that had been learnt from negative feedback combine to regulate exchanges of water and energy between the body and the surroundings. Subsequent systemic physiology, molecular neuroscience and experimental psychology, however, have been traduced by a misconception that learnt controls of intake are 'non-homeostatic', the myth of biological 'set points' and an historic failure to address evidence for the ingestion-adapting information-processing mechanisms on which an operationally integrative theory of eating and drinking relies.

Clinical validation of the trait and state versions of the Food Craving Questionnaire

This is the first study to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait (FCQ-T), and Food Craving Questionnaire-State (FCQ-S) measures using a clinically heterogeneous sample of eating disorder patients (N = 177) recruited from seven different outpatient eating disorder treatment centers in Spain. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) corroborated the factor structures of the FCQ-T and FCQ-S. The measures' scores and their factor-derived scale-scores yielded internal consistency reliability indexes that ranged from adequate to excellent. The measures were predictive of eating disorder symptoms. As expected, the FCQ-T was more strongly associated with eating disorder psychopathology than the FCQ-S. The results replicated the psychometric properties of the FCQ-T and FCQ-S in eating disorder populations and could become useful tools in clinical and research settings.

Differences in Preferences of Entrees by Elderly Congregate Meal Participants According to Age, Gender, Ethnicity and Education and a Factor Analysis Approach to Group Entrée Preferences

Congregate meal participants (n = 381), ages 60-100, provided preference ratings of 43 entrees utilizing a modified Food Rating Scale (FACT). Differences in preferences of entrees associated with age, gender, ethnicity and educational level were analyzed using X2 analysis. Factor analysis was used to group entrees which were associated according to preferences. Both males and females agreed with the top five preferred entrees. For other entrees, females had a higher acceptance level. Both age groups preferred the same top five entrees; for other entrees, the younger group was more accepting of these. Few differences were noted among the various ethnic groups (91% white and 7% African-American). Education level of respondents had a varying association with entree preference, depending upon the specific entree.

The development and validation of Spanish versions of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires

OBJECTIVE

We developed and tested the psychometric properties of Spanish versions of the Trait and State Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-T and FCQ-S respectively).

METHOD

The instruments were translated and adapted to Spanish and administered to undergraduate students from a Southern university in Spain (N = 271). The data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis to compare the factor structure of the English and Spanish versions of both questionnaires.

RESULTS

The factors structure of both questionnaires obtained excellent fit indices across their Spanish versions with the one exception that some factors of the FCQ-S were more highly intercorrelated among the Spanish sample than the American.

DISCUSSION

This study supports the conceptualization of food cravings as universal multidimensional motivational states that can be reliably measured and supports the use of the Spanish versions of the FCQ.

A sequential behavioral analysis of craving sweets in obese women

This study compared 40 female participants in a behavioral weight loss program who frequently reported craving sweets to 40 who rarely reported craving sweets using 2-week behavioral eating diaries. The two groups were compared on physiological, demographic, and questionnaire measures and no significant differences were found. There were no significant differences in macronutrient intake either overall or in a wide range of specific situations. The relative proportions of carbohydrate, protein, and fat consumed in association with craving sweets differed only slightly from the composition of other meals and snacks. Carbohydrate and protein intake when craving sweets was similar to breakfasts while the relative amount of fat consumed when craving sweets was comparable to episodes of overeating. The two groups differed in their reporting of moods with the high-craving group reporting more boredom and less stress than the low-craving group. The relationship between situational and mood variables and reports of craving sweets did not differ between the two groups. Craving sweets was negatively associated with hunger and was not associated with meal skipping. A sequential analysis demonstrated that eating in response to craving sweets triggers an abstinence violation effect. These data are not consistent with the hypothesis that sweet craver's consume high-carbohydrate, low-protein meals and snacks in order to self-medicate depression caused by serotonin depletion. Instead, the data suggest that we should further explore the role of food palatability and food-related cognitions in order to understand craving sweets.

How not to think about immediate dietary and postingestional influences on appetites and satieties

Palatabilities and also satieties are assumption-loaded abstractions from the observable momentary causal relationships between eating or drinking and the situations in which it occurs. Palatability is neither in the food nor in the ingestive movements. Relative preference can vary with context, contrary to the usual concept of stable palatability. Satieties exemplify this, for they can be food-specific, i.e. ingestion-induced suppression of appetite may alter the supposed palatability hierarchy.
