Potentiation of immune responsiveness in aging by static magnetic fields applied to the brain. Role of the pineal gland

The physiological responses of the Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) fry to the static magnetic fields with different intensities during acute and subacute exposures

In recent years, the application of new technologies producing magnetic fields has widely increased in the aquatic environment. In this study, the effects of variable static magnetic fields on metabolic and immune parameters of the Caspian kutum fry were investigated. The Caspian kutum fry (n=220, body weight 1.78±0.11 g) was exposed to static magnetic fields with different intensities (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 mT) induced by electrical power supply during acute (one week) and subacute (3 weeks) periods. The results showed an increment in the quantity of ALT and AST enzymes (metabolic parameters) with increasing magnetic fields intensities in subacute and acute exposures (p<0.05). The lysozyme level, an immune parameter, showed a significant decrease, especially at intensities higher than 2.5 mT during subacute and acute exposures (p<0.05). It seems that low-intensity static magnetic fields can effect on the metabolism and immunity of the Caspian kutum fry as valuable commercial species.

Increased incidence of spontaneous malformations in pups and increased litter size from pinealectomized dams

The aim of the present study was to clarify whether maternal pinealectomy increases: (i) the incidence of spontaneous malformations in offspring; and (ii) litter size. More than 30 female rats in each of the control groups (normal and sham-pinealectomized) and the pinealectomized group were mated repeatedly with normal male rats and pups were autopsied mostly before weaning. No malformations were seen in offspring from the normal and sham-pinealectomized groups (n = 350 and n = 736, respectively). In contrast, in offspring from pinealectomized mothers (n = 1123), spontaneous malformations were found in five (taillessness in three and unilateral hydronephrosis or large renal cyst in the other two) or maybe six (unilateral renal hypoplasia in another) pups. This increased incidence of malformations in the latter group was statistically significant (P < 0.034 or 0.017 (Fisher's exact test), respectively). The frequency of still-born cases was not higher in pups born from pinealectomized mothers. The mean litter size was larger in the pinealectomized group compared with the control groups (P < 0.005-0.001, Student's t-test) at the first delivery (at approximately 100 days of age), but was not different at later deliveries at older ages. Our results suggest that the maternal pineal hormone suppresses: (i) the incidence of spontaneous malformations in offspring until mothers reach an old age; and (ii) litter size during the reproductively maturational phase of life.

Effects of magnetic fields on the accumulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances induced by iron salt and H(2)O(2) in mouse brain homogenates or phosphotidylcholine

In this study, we examined the effects of magnetic fields (MFs) on the generation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the mouse brain homogenates or phosphotidylcholine (PC) solution, incubated with FeCl(3) and/or H(2)O(2). Active oxygen species were generated and lipid peroxidation was induced in mouse brain homogenates by incubation with iron ions, resulting in the accumulation of TBARS. Lipid peroxidation was induced in PC by incubation with iron ions and H(2)O(2). Exposure to sinusoidal MFs (60 Hz, 0.2-1.2 mT), symmetric sawtooth-waveform MFs (50 Hz, 25-600 mT/s), rectangular MFs (1/0.4-1/16 Hz, 3.3 mT) and static MFs (1, 5-300 mT) had no effect on the accumulation of TBARS in brain homogenates induced by FeCl(3). In contrast, when the homogenates were incubated with FeCl(3) in static MFs (2-4 mT), the accumulation of TBARS was decreased. However, this inhibitory effect disappeared when EDTA was added to the homogenate and incubated with H(2)O(2). The accumulation of TBARS in PC solution incubated with FeCl(3) and H(2)O(2) was also inhibited by the static MF. These results indicate that only static MFs had an inhibitory effect on iron-induced lipid peroxidation and the effectiveness of this magnetic field on iron ion-induced active oxygen species generation is restricted to a so called 'window' of field intensity of 2-4 mT.

Distribution of deaths from ischemic heart disease and stroke. Environmental and aging influences in men and women

The goal of this study was to check: 1) links between month of the year (1-12), monthly solar activity (SA) and monthly geomagnetic activity (GMA) with the temporal distribution of deaths from ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke in Israel and Lithuania (48 months); 2) related age and gender differences; 3) temporal connection between deaths from IHD and suicide and their relationship to SA and GMA, as was suggested in our previous study in Israel.

RESULTS

Total deaths from IHD in Lithuania showed a trend towards a link with SA (r = 0.25, p = 0.09) and a highly significant correlation for females (r = 0.37, p = 0.00096) but not for males. Age < 74 showed no correlation with SA or GMA in females, but a negative correlation with SA in males (r = -0.513, p = 0.0002). At age > 74 both females (r = 0.467, p = 0.0006, n = 20763) and males (r = 0.476, p = 0.0006, n = 14682) showed a highly significant correlation with SA and a negative correlation with 1-12 months of the year, with deaths concentrating at the beginning of the year (r = -0.32, p = 0.002). Number of monthly suicide and IHD deaths were negatively related to each other (r = -0.45, p = 0.0014).

CONCLUSIONS

1) Around age 70 an increasingly positive relationship between the temporal distribution of deaths from IDH and SA is seen. 2) Gender differences in links to SA are partially a consequence of the higher number of deaths in females from IHD at age > 74.3) Monthly number of suicides is inversely related to number of deaths from IHD.

Relationship between suicide and myocardial infarction with regard to changing physical environmental conditions

In recent years, the possible association of changes in mortality from cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction (MI) and deaths related to violence and the suicide rate has been repeatedly discussed. This study examined the relationship between cosmic physical changes (solar, geomagnetic and other space activity parameters) and changes in the total number of in-hospital and MI-related deaths and deaths from suicide to determine if a relationship exists between the distribution of total and MI-related deaths with suicide over time; some differences in the serotonergic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of MI and suicide were also taken into account. All suicides (n = 2359) registered in the State of Israel from 1981 to 1989 (108 months) were analysed and compared with the total number of deaths (n = 15601) and deaths from MI (n = 1573) in a large university hospital over 180 months (1974-1989). The following were the main features of the Results. (1) Monthly suicide rate was correlated with space proton flux (r = 0.42, P = 0.0001) and with geomagnetic activity (r = -0.22, P = 0.03). (2) Total hospital and MI-related deaths were correlated with solar activity parameters (r = 0.35, P < 0.001) and radiowave propagation (r = 0.52-0.44, P < 0.001), an with proton flux (r = -0.3 to -0.26, P < 0.01). (3) Monthly suicide distribution over 108 months was correlated with MI (r = -0.33, P = 0.0005) and total hospital mortality (r = -0.22, P = 0.024).
