Abstract
Eutrophication is a global problem causing the reduction of water quality and the loss of ecosystem goods and services. The lakes of the "Lagunas de Montebello" National Park (LMNP), Chiapas, Mexico, not only represent unique and beautiful natural scenic sites in southern Mexico but are also a national protected area and RAMSAR site. Unfortunately, some of these lakes started showing eutrophication signs since 2003. Anthropogenic activities (e.g., land-use change from forested to agricultural and urban development) are leading to water quality and trophic state alterations of the lakes of the LMNP. This study shows the results of a coupled limnological characterization and high-throughput sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene to analyze the microbial composition of the water column in a set of oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes. Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) was the main environmental parameter correlated with the trophic conditions of the lakes. Although the microbial diversity was similar, the microbial composition changed significantly from oligo to eutrophic lakes. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were the main components of oligotrophic lakes, and Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes of eutrophic lakes. While Acinetobacter (Proteobacteria) and Cyanobium (a unicellular cyanobacterium) dominated in oligotrophic lakes, the filamentous, bloom-forming, and toxin-producing cyanobacteria Planktothrix was the dominant genus in eutrophic lakes. High-throughput sequencing allowed the detection of changes in the composition of the microbial component in oligotrophic lakes, suggesting a shift towards eutrophication, highlighting the relevance of sensitive monitoring protocols of these ecosystems to implement remediation programs for eutrophicated lakes and conservation strategies for those yet pristine.

Abstract
Jeanette Snyder Brown (universally called Jan) was associated with the Department of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution for Science (until recently Carnegie Institution of Washington) over a period of 37 years. Jan has left a scientific legacy of extensive publications concerned with photosynthetic pigments and their organization, and a historic collection of portraits of scientists who were prominent during her long tenure in the Department of Plant Biology. This legacy will stand for many years to come.

Abstract
The absorption (640-710 nm) and fluorescence emission (670-710 nm) spectra (77 K) of wild-type and Chl b-less, mutant, barley chloroplasts grown under either day or intermittent light were analysed by a RESOL curve-fitting program. The usual four major forms of Chl a at 662, 670, 678 and 684 nm were evident in all of the absorption spectra and three major components at 686, 693 and 704 nm in the emission spectra. A broad Chl a component band at 651 nm most likely exists in all chlorophyll spectra in vivo. The results show that the mutant lacks not only Chl b, but also the Chl a molecules which are bound to the light-harvesting, Chl a/b, protein complex of normal plants. It also appears that the absorption spectrum of this antenna complex is not modified appreciably by its isolation from thylakoid membranes.

Abstract
Acrocarpia paniculata thylakoids were fragmented with Triton X-100 and the pigment-protein complexes so released were isolated by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Three main chlorophyll-carotenoid-protein complexes with distinct pigment compositions were isolated. (1) A P-700-chlorophyll a-protein complex, with a ratio of 1 P-700: 38 chlorophyll a: 4 beta-carotene molecules, had similar absorption and fluorescence characteristics to the chlorophyll-protein complex 1 isolated with Triton X-100 from higher plants, green algae and Ecklonia radiata. (2) an orange-brown complex had a chlorophyll a : c2 : fucoxanthin molar ratio of 2 : 1 : 2. this complex had no chlorophyll c1 and contained most of the fucoxanthin present in the chloroplasts. This pigment complex is postulated to be the main light-harvesting complex of brown seaweeds. (3) A green complex had a chlorophyll a : c1 : c2 : violaxanthin molar ratio of 8 : 1 : 1. This also is a light-harvesting complex. the absorption and fluorescence spectral characteristics and other physical properties were consistent with the pigments of these three major complexes being bound to protein. Differential extraction of brown algal thylakoids with Triton X-100 showed that a chlorophyll c2-fucoxanthin-protein complex was a minor pigment complex of these thylakoids.

Abstract
These different bilayer lipid membrane systems were studied under visible and ultraviolet illumination. The first system consisted of a bilayer lipid membrane formed with a mixture of phospholipids and cholesterol, to one side of which purple membrane fragments from Halobacterium halobium were added. The second system consisted of a membrane formed from spinach chloroplast extract. When either of these membrane systems was illuminated with ultraviolet and visible radiation, photopotentials were observed and photoelectric action spectra were recorded (the technique is termed photoelectrospectrometry). Each spectrum had a definite structure which was characteristic of each of the modified membranes. The third system studied consisted of an otherwise photoinactive membrane formed with a mixture of phospholipids and cholesterol, to one side of which chymotrypsin was added. When the membrane was illuminated with visible light no photoresponse was observed. On the other hand, a photopotential which increased with incubation time was observed when the membrane was illuminated with ultraviolet light. Since, in our systems, the photoresponses have been observed to be due to certain species incorporated into the membrane, it appears that photoelectrospectrometry is a useful tool for studying lipid-protein interactions, constituent organization and energy transfer in membranes.

Abstract
Using fourth derivative analysis, differences between room and low temperature absorption spectra were studied. The positions of most absorption bands of the water-soluble, accessory pigment complex, the phycobilisome, remained unchanged after cooling. The stability of the wavelength positions of chlorophyll a forms in vivo as a function of temperature (Gulyaev, B.A. and Litvin, F.F. (1967) Biofizika 12, 845--854) was generally confirmed. The wavelength positions of all chlorophyll a forms in the P-700 chlorophyll a protein complex were unchanged when the preparations were cooled to -196 degrees C. Likewise, with other chlorophyll-containing materials: the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b protein complex and the thylakoids of higher plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, the wavelengths positions of most chlorophyll a forms were stable upon cooling. An exception was a 680 nm chlorophyll a band which was generally split at low temperature into two bands with the materials investigated. An interpretation of the multiplicity of chlorophyll spectral forms and the spectral changes induced by cooling for these forms is given using exciton theory and the energy-coupling variation of chlorophyll a molecules.
