A clinical study of the autotransplantation of unerupted maxillary canines

Early post-operative endodontic therapy limits inflammatory root resorption of autotransplanted maxillary canine teeth

This study has provided information concerning the limitation of inflammatory root resorption of autotransplanted maxillary canine teeth. It has been shown that early post-operative endodontic therapy significantly decreases the occurrence of inflammatory root resorption (P less than 0.001) but does not change the prevalence of replacement root resorption. It is argued that by limiting inflammatory resorption the prognosis for autotransplanted teeth is considerably improved.

Transalveolar transplantation of maxillary canines. An alternative to orthodontic treatment in adult patients

Transalveolar transplantation of 31 maxillary canines in 26 patients was performed. Fixed orthodontic appliances were used for fixation for 6 to 8 weeks. All the transplanted teeth were firmly affixed in the new positions 3 to 6 months postoperatively. Complete bone regeneration and an attached gingiva with a stippled surface buccally and a normal pocket depth were observed 1 to 2 years postoperatively. These positive treatment results indicate that transalveolar transplantation is a useful alternative in the treatment of impacted maxillary canines in selected patients.

Autotransplantation of human teeth. A life-table analysis of prognostic factors

In a retrospective study of a sample of 291 autotransplantations of human teeth carried out by 27 oral surgeons over a period of 25 years, the clinically and radiologically available factors at the time of surgery were analysed with reference to their prognostic relevance. Prognostically relevant factors related to loss of the transplanted teeth were determined by both univariate life-table analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Of the 11 factors analysed in the Cox regression analysis, the following seemed to be prognostically relevant to loss or retention of the graft: developmental stage of the graft, age of the patient, donor tooth type, ectopia of the donor tooth, extraoral storage of the graft, and oral surgeon. In the present material, the prognosis of the grafts did not seem to be significantly influenced by such factors as prophylactic administration of antibiotics and fixation time. Using relevant parameters, it is possible to create a prognosis forecast for the individual patient. A case with a favourable set of parameters is shown.

Root resorption associated with autotransplanted maxillary canine teeth

A brief review of the published results of autotransplanting maxillary canine teeth has been presented together with the results of a prospective study in which 141 maxillary canine teeth were surgically repositioned in 113 patients, but not root-treated unless resorption occurred. Attention was given to assessing factors (age, sex, tooth positions, surgical difficulty, time out of mouth, acute infection, periodontal disease, caries, occlusion, formation of lamina dura) associated with root resorption of the transplanted teeth but no particular factor of significance emerged. It has been speculated that early post-operative root canal treatment and/or a two-stage technique might reduce the incidence of root resorption of autotransplanted teeth.
