Clinical performance of two dentine adhesives: 2-year results

Scotchbond MP and ART Bond were used without intentional enamel etching to bond a total of 43 resin composite restorations in Class V 'abrasion/ erosion' lesions. The cumulative loss rates after 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years, respectively, were Scotchbond MP: 9, 14, 27 per cent; and ART Bond: 0, 5, 5 per cent. These data were not compared because each material was used on different patients. The results support the higher bond strength to dentine in the laboratory of Scotchbond MP compared with its predecessor Scotchbond 2. There was a slight but clinically insignificant amount of enamel marginal staining for both products after 2 years, confirming the necessity to etch the enamel for effective marginal sealing.

Evaluation of two dentin adhesives in cervical lesions

The clinical effectiveness of two dentin adhesives, Clearfil New Bond and Scotchbond 2, was evaluated in two different cavity designs. Group A was without enamel bevel or acid etch and with a butt-joint cavity; and group B had enamel bevel, acid etch, and feather-edged cavities. The retentive rate and marginal adaptation were monitored for 2 years. In the Clearfil system, 21% of group A restorations failed after 2 years, whereas virtually all the group B restorations (99%) were retained. In addition, after 2 years, the total of debonded group A restorations in the Scotchbond 2 system expanded to 13%, whereas no restorations from group B were lost. There was clearly marginal deterioration in time irrespective of the bonding system. Nevertheless, the marginal adaptation of cervical lesions restored with Clearfil New Bond adhesive in combination with Clearfil Ray composite resin revealed fewer defects compared with the Scotchbond 2 adhesive with Silux Plus composite resin restorations. SEM evaluation disclosed composite resin remnants on the dentin surface in cavities with lost fillings, which indicates partial cohesive failure of the adhesive joint.

One-year clinical evaluation of three dentine bonding agents

One hundred and twenty-five composite restorations were placed in non-undercut, non-enamel-etched Class V abrasion lesions in 20 patients using the dentine bonding agents Scotchbond 2, Tripton, and Prisma Universal Bond 2. Patients were recalled at approximately 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. After 1 year the cumulative per cent survival of restorations was Scotchbond 2, 8 per cent; Scotchbond 2 with dentine roughening, 16 per cent; Tripton, 16 per cent; Prisma Universal Bond 2, 75 per cent.

One-year clinical performance of PMDM-based dentine bonding agents

Two PMDM-based dentine bonding agents and a microfilled composite were used to restore a total of forty non-undercut caries-free cervical abrasion lesions without enamel etching. Restorations were evaluated over one year and the loss rate calculated using a life table analysis. Marginal staining was assessed from colour photographs on a continuous linear rating scale. After one year, 5 per cent of Tenure bonded restorations were lost compared with 52 per cent of Mirage bonded restorations. Slight marginal staining was evident around Tenure bonded restorations after one year.

Five-year study of cervical erosions restored with resin and dentin-bonding agent

The cumulative retention rate of a microfilled resin in non-undercut cervical abrasion/erosion lesions was studied over a 5-yr period. The enamel was etched and the dentin was pretreated with either Gluma (n = 75) or the first marketed version of Scotchbond (n = 30). The cumulative 5-yr retention rate of the Gluma fillings was 90% and that of the Scotchbond fillings 47% (the 95% confidence limits were 83-98% for Gluma fillings and 27-67% for Scotchbond fillings). The retention rate with both bonding agents was significantly higher in the maxillary arch than in the mandibular arch.

Microleakage of glass ionomer/composite resin restorations: a laboratory study. Part 2. The influence of bonding systems

Acid-etching and bonding of composite resin to bevelled enamel margins has been reported to produce a reliable seal. However, achieving a seal with dentine and cementum margins is more difficult. Four different dentine bonding systems were used in combination with Silux composite resin to restore cervical cavities in vitro. None of the bonding systems used completely sealed either the occlusal or gingival margins. Of the four systems, GLUMA provided the best seal at both the occlusal and gingival margins.

Three-year clinical evaluation of dentine bonding agents

Eighty Class V non-undercut cervical abrasion lesions were restored using four dentine bonding agents and composite resin. The restorations were examined over a three-year period, and the cumulative loss rate calculated each year. Marginal staining at each year was assessed using a standardized photographic method. The loss rate of restorations increased generally over the three-year period, reaching 30 to 60 per cent for the four products. Marginal staining also increased for all four products over the three-year period.

Report of the Committee on Scientific Investigation of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry

Subjects of the past decade in the dental literature are reflected in this year's Committee report. We note the decrease in the prevalence of caries, the influence of dental implants, the advancements in dental materials, and the continued efforts to control adhesive events in the oral cavity. This year we included comments from and about many significant review articles published this past year. The Committee continues to be concerned about the quality of some of the work reported and the quality of the reporting. We have attempted to select the distinguished work, that which provides new information to our profession. The subjects covered include pulp biology, caries prevention, periodontics, implants, craniomandibular function and dysfunction, occlusion, and dental materials.

Clinical performance of dentine bonding agents in the enamel-etched Class V abrasion lesion

Ninety-three non-undercut cervical abrasion lesions were restored with one of five dentine bonding agents and composite resin, using enamel etching to supplement retention. The restorations were reviewed at approximately one, six, 12 and 24 months. The loss rate at one year ranged from zero to 50 per cent, and marginal staining became apparent over the one-year period. It is evident that even with enamel etching, some dentine bonding agents are not effective enough to reliably retain composite in Class V abrasion lesions.

Dentin smear layer: an asset or a liability for bonding?

Despite concerns and claims that the smear layer on dentin is undesirable for bonding, supportive evidence is lacking. The clinical efficacy of various agents for smear layer removal and the effect of smear layer removal on the bond strengths of a glass-ionomer cement and three representative dentin bonding agents were examined. For all but one dentin bonding agent (Gluma), a 15-second treatment with 17% EDTA caused a reduction in bond strength. For Gluma, no significant bond was obtained without EDTA treatment. While Gluma probably bonds via dentinal collagen, the other materials interact primarily with dentinal calcium. Removal of the smear layer for adhesives reliant on the presence of calcium is therefore undesirable. The clinical effects of some agents proposed for smear layer removal were examined by SEM of replicas.
