Patient Safety/Quality Improvement Primer, Part III: The Role of Simulation

Simulation training has taken a prominent role in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OTO-HNS) as a means to ensure patient safety and quality improvement (PS/QI). While it is often equated to resident training, this tool has value in lifelong learning and extends beyond the individual otolaryngologists to include simulation-based learning for teams and health systems processes. Part III of this PS/QI primer provides an overview of simulation in medicine and specific applications within the field of OTO-HNS. The impact of simulation on PS/QI will be presented in an evidence-based fashion to include the use of run and statistical process control charts to assess the impact of simulation-guided initiatives. Last, steps in developing a simulation program focused on PS/QI will be outlined with future opportunities for OTO-HNS simulation.

The effect of collaboration on obstetric patient safety in three academic facilities

Interprofessional collaboration is critical to the provision of safe patient care and provider satisfaction. Collaboration is an active process that can help maximize positive patient outcomes. Three academic institutions implemented collaborative processes as part of their perinatal patient safety initiatives based on anecdotal experiences and safety culture surveys that demonstrated positive outcomes. Reliable tools and additional research are needed to measure the extent and impact of collaboration on patient outcomes in perinatal care.

Integrating interprofessional education into continuing education: a planning process for continuing interprofessional education programs

Informal continuing interprofessional education (CIPE) can be traced back decades in the United States; however, interest in formal CIPE is recent. Interprofessional education (IPE) now is recognized as an important component of new approaches to continuing education (CE) that are needed to increase health professionals' ability to improve outcomes of care. Although there are examples of CIPE programs that are being successfully implemented, a clearly articulated, step-by-step planning process to help guide educators in providing effective CIPE programs is lacking. This lack of guidance poses a significant barrier to increasing the number of CIPE programs in the United States. In this article, we describe a process for developing, implementing, and evaluating CIPE programs using the familiar systematic CE planning process. Limitations of traditional CE also are addressed, and the relationship between CIPE and other new approaches to CE is clarified. Four examples of CIPE programs are provided to illustrate how the planning process can be adapted to include IPE, while implementing recommended changes in traditional CE offerings. The article is concluded with a discussion of some of the challenges that will face CE educators in moving toward a new vision of CE integrated with IPE.
