Abstract
Concerns about food safety have consistently driven the exploration of potent antimicrobials with probiotic origins. Identification of probiotic-derived bacteriocins as robust alternatives to antibiotics has gained traction following the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the global market is witnessing an increasing preference for minimally processed food products free from chemical additives. Another contributing factor to the search for potent antimicrobials is the escalating number of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the need to mitigate the significant damage inflicted on the commensal human microbiota by broad-spectrum antibiotics. As an alternative bio-preservation strategy, there is substantial enthusiasm for the use of bacteriocins or starter cultures producing bacteriocins in preserving a variety of food items. This review specifically focuses on bacteriocins originating from lactic acid bacteria associated with fermented foods and explores their technological applications as nanobiotics. The food-grade antibiotic alternatives, whether utilized independently or in combination with other antimicrobials and administered directly or encapsulated, are anticipated to possess qualities of safety, stability and non-toxicity suitable for application in the food sector. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Background: Studies have shown positive effects of erbium lasers in removal of biofilms. A review article was required with quantitative data for confirmation of their effects, but there is still no a comprehensive study reviewing their effects based on the root canal and implant surface. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of erbium lasers in removal of the root canal system and surface biofilms. Methods: Studies were searched with keywords in databases of PubMed, Scopus, Europe PMC, Cochrane Central, Embase, and Web of Science and screened by referees. Data were included based on mean ± standard deviation and size of control and laser groups. Effect sizes were assessed as standardized mean differences and calculated for each study and for the root and dental surface. Laser characteristics and bacteria were considered as moderators. Results: Nineteen articles in the current study comprised 565 samples (283 control samples and 282 laser samples). The analyses showed the significant effects of erbium lasers on bacterial biofilms on the implant surface [-0.496, 95% confidence interval, CI (-0.720 to -0.273); I2 = 26.94; p = 0.029; Q = 13.28] and root canal [-0.551, 95% CI (-0.656 to -0.445); I2 = 23.89; p = 0.031; Q = 10.46]. Results showed that highest efficiency lasers were obtained at higher wavelengths of 2940 nm, 75-100 mJ energy, and 100-150 μsec and <50-Hz pulses. Conclusions: Erbium lasers can be used to remove biofilms on dental implant surfaces and root canal systems and are safe options for untouchable sites in the root canal.

Abstract
The recent surge in demand for natural preservatives has ushered in a new era of research into novel bacteriocins capable of effectively combating food-borne infections. In this study, the bacteriocin from Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus ZFM216, which has a molecular mass of 11851.9 Da, was purified using macroporous resin, gel chromatography, and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. This bacteriocin could inhibit both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It had a strong inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus D48 with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 1.75 μM. Bacteriocin ZFM216 was heat stable and showed pH stability under weakly acidic conditions. It was sensitive to pepsin, proteinase K and trypsin. Electron microscopy results showed that when treated with bacteriocin ZFM216, S. aureus D48 was severely deformed, the cell structure was obviously changed, and the intracellular electrolyte leaked to the outside of the cell. Bacteriocin ZFM216 caused the ATP level of the indicator to decrease, the conductivity to sharply increase, and the transmembrane potential difference (ΔΨ) to instantaneously decrease. This research formed the basis for further development and utilization of bacteriocin ZFM216 which has potential in the food industry.

Abstract
Currently, it is extremely important to identify and describe new alternative compounds with potential antimicrobial properties. Since various natural biological systems are capable of producing active compounds with such properties, many of them have been the subject of intensive study. The aim of this work was to heterologously overexpress, purify and preliminarily investigate the antimicrobial activity of a novel bacteriocin found in Salmonella species. Overexpressed protein shows an amino acid structure homologous to the well-known colicin M and was never expressed previously in the E. coli platform. Purified salmocin M showed an inhibition spectrum against Salmonella and E. coli strains. To determine its potential as an antimicrobial agent for use in medicine or the food industry, preliminary antimicrobial tests against pathogenic bacteria were carried out. Our research demonstrates that bacteriocin can be produced efficiently in bacterial expression systems, which are one of the cheapest and the most popular platforms for recombinant protein production. Moreover, preliminary results of microbiological tests showed its activity against most of the bacterial strains in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract
In the present scenario of a major demand for new compounds with antimicrobial activity, bacteriocin and bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) are promising tools against deteriorating and pathogenic microorganisms, thus having potential applications in both the food industry and infectious disease control. In the present report, we describe the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of BLIS produced by Enterococcus faecium E86, a strain previously isolated and sequenced by our group, focusing on the structural genes of two bacteriocins identified: enterocin TW21 and enterocin P. Transcription of all four genes associated with the biosynthesis and immunity of enterocin P and enterocin TW21 were confirmed by RT-PCR. However, Sanger sequencing confirmed a truncation of the structural gene of enterocin TW21 due to one base pair deletion (A/T). Thus, although E. faecium E86 was shown to carry two bacteriocinogenic gene clusters, only one cluster encodes a functional bacteriocin, enterocin P. Enterocin P was able to inhibit different strains of Listeria monocytogenes and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (both Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium), showing intense bacteriolytic activity, in most cases.

Abstract
Staphylococci belong to conditionally pathogenic bacteria, and the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus is the strongest among them. Enterotoxin produced by it can contaminate food and cause food poisoning. Bacteriocin is a kind of polypeptide with antibacterial activity synthesized by some bacteria during metabolism. In this study, we report on purification, characterization, and mode of action of the bacteriocin named Paracin 54, produced by Lactobacillus paracasei ZFM54. Paracin 54 was purified by precipitation with 80% ammonium sulfate, strong cation-exchange chromatography, G-25 gel column, and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The molecular weight of Paracin 54 (5718.1843 Da) was determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Paracin 54 showed broad-spectrum inhibitory activity. It had a strong inhibitory effect on Staphylococci with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 3.00-4.50 μg/mL. Paracin 54 was heat-stable and active only in acidic pH range (2-6). After treatment with proteases, the activity was lost. The results of mode of action showed Paracin 54 damaged the cell membrane and cell wall of Staphylococcus aureus, and then the cytoplasm leaked out, leading to death of the bacteria. These properties make Paracin 54 a promising candidate to prevent the growth of spoilage bacteria and control food poisoning caused by Staphylococci. KEY POINTS: • Paracin 54 was purified from Lactobacillus paracasei ZFM54 with good biochemical characteristics. • Paracin 54 had a strong effect against Staphylococci, making it a promising preservative to prevent the growth of Staphylococci in food. • The mode of action of Paracin 54 on Staphylococcus aureus was revealed.

Abstract
Microorganisms isolated from various traditionally fermented food products prepared in households without commercial starter cultures are designated as natural isolates. In addition, this term is also used for microorganisms collected from various natural habitats or products (silage, soil, manure, plant and animal material, etc.) that do not contain any commercial starters or bacterial formulations. They are characterized by unique traits that are the result of the selective pressure of environmental conditions, as well as interactions with other organisms. The synthesis of antimicrobial molecules, including bacteriocins, is an evolutionary advantage and an adaptive feature that sets them apart from other microorganisms from a common environment. This review aims to underline the knowledge of bacteriocins produced by natural isolates, with a particular emphasis on the most common location of their genes and operons, plasmids, and the importance of the relationship between the plasmidome and the adaptive potential of the isolate. Applications of bacteriocins, ranging from natural food preservatives to supplements and drugs in pharmacology and medicine, will also be addressed. The latest challenges faced by researchers in isolating new natural isolates with desired characteristics will be discussed, as well as the production of new antimicrobials, nearly one century since the first discovery of colicins in 1925. Abstract
New anticancer agents are continually needed because cancerous cells continue to evolve resistance to the currently available chemotherapeutic agents. The aim of the present study was to screen, purify and characterize a hepatotoxic bacteriocin from Enterococcus species. The production of bacteriocin from the Enterococcus isolates was achieved based on their antibacterial activity against indicator reference strains. Enterococcus isolates showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity by forming inhibition zones with diameters ranged between 12 and 29 mm. The most potent bacteriocin producing strain was molecularly identified as Enterococcus thailandicus. The crude extracted bacteriocin was purified by cation exchange and size exclusion chromatography that resulted in 83 fractions. Among them, 18 factions were considered as bacteriocins based on their positive antibacterial effects. The anticancer effects of the purified bacteriocins were tested against HepG2 cell line. The most promising enterocin (LNS18) showed the highest anticancer effects against HepG2 cells (with 75.24% cellular inhibition percentages), with IC50 value 15.643 μM and without any significant cytotoxic effects on normal fibroblast cells (BJ ATCC® CRL-2522™). The mode of anticancer action of enterocin LNS18 against HepG2 cells could be explained by its efficacy to induce cellular ROS, decrease HepG2 CD markers and arrest cells in G0 phase. Amino acid sequence of enterocin LNS18 was determined and the deduced peptide of the structural gene showed 86 amino acids that shared 94.7% identity with enterocin NKR-5-3B from E. faecium. Enterocin LNS18 consisted of 6 α-helices; 5 circular and one linear. Model-template alignment constructed between enterocin LNS18 and NKR-5-3B revealed 95.31% identity. The predicted 3D homology model of LNS18, after circularization and release of 22 amino acids, showed the formation of a bond between Leu23 and Trp86 amino acid residues at the site of circularization. Furthermore, areas of positive charges were due to the presence of 6 lysine residues resulting in a net positive charge of +4 on the bacteriocin surface. Based on the above mentioned results, our characterized bacteriocin is a promising agent to target liver cancer without any significant toxic effects on normal cell lines.

Abstract
Here, we report the draft genome sequence of the bacteriocin-producing Enterococcus faecium strain HY07, isolated from traditional Chinese fermented sausages. The genome comprises 2,585,631 bp with 2,624 coding sequences, as assigned by NCBI, which may provide fundamental molecular information on elucidating the adaption mechanism of Enterococcus faecium to the meat environment.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesized antibacterial peptides or proteins from microorganisms. We report a novel bacteriocin producing strain, Enterococcus faecalis Gr17, that was isolated from the Chinese traditional low-salt fermented whole fish product Suan yu. E. faecalis Gr17 displayed potent antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. The complete genome of E. faecalis Gr17 contained one circular chromosome and plasmid. The gene cluster of a novel bacteriocin designated enterocin Gr17 was identified. The enterocin Gr17 structural gene encodes a precursor of the bacteriocin. Two other transporter genes and an immunity gene within two divergent operons were identified as being associated with enterocin Gr17 secretion and protection. The novel enterocin Gr17 was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, cation exchange, gel filtration, and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The molecular weight of enterocin Gr17 was 4,531.01 Da as determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and its mature amino acid sequence of enterocin Gr17 was RSYGNGVYCNNSKCWVNWGEAKENIIGIVISGWATGLAGMGR. Sequence alignment revealed that enterocin Gr17 is a class IIa bacteriocin with similarities to enterocin P. The merits of bactericidal activity, sensitivity to enzymes, and pronounced stability to chemicals, temperature (60°C, 30 min and 121°C, 15 min), and pH (2-10) indicated practicality and safety of enterocin Gr17 in the food industry. The complete genome information of E. faecalis Gr17 will improve the understanding of the biosynthetic mechanism of enterocin Gr17, which has potential value as a food biopreservative.
