Abstract
Various pathogens have the ability to grow on food matrices and instruments. This grow may reach to form biofilms. Bacterial biofilms are community of microorganisms embedded in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) containing lipids, DNA, proteins, and polysaccharides. These EPSs provide a tolerance and favorable living condition for microorganisms. Biofilm formations could not only contribute a risk for food safety but also have negative impacts on healthcare sector. Once biofilms form, they reveal resistances to traditional detergents and disinfectants, leading to cross-contamination. Inhibition of biofilms formation and abolition of mature biofilms is the main target for controlling of biofilm hazards in the food industry. Some novel eco-friendly technologies such as ultrasound, ultraviolet, cold plasma, magnetic nanoparticles, different chemicals additives as vitamins, D-amino acids, enzymes, antimicrobial peptides, and many other inhibitors provide a significant value on biofilm inhibition. These anti-biofilm agents represent promising tools for food industries and researchers to interfere with different phases of biofilms including adherence, quorum sensing molecules, and cell-to-cell communication. This perspective review highlights the biofilm formation mechanisms, issues associated with biofilms, environmental factors influencing bacterial biofilm development, and recent strategies employed to control biofilm-forming bacteria in the food industry. Further studies are still needed to explore the effects of biofilm regulation in food industries and exploit more regulation strategies for improving the quality and decreasing economic losses.

Abstract
Dental caries is a highly prevalent oral disease affecting billions of individuals globally. The disease occurs chemically as a result of breakdown of the tooth surface attributed to metabolic activity in colonizing biofilm. Biofilms, composed of exopolysaccharides and proteins, protect bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, which is notable for its role in tooth decay due to its acid-producing abilities. While various antimicrobial agents may prevent biofilm formation, these drugs often produce side effects including enamel erosion and taste disturbances. This study aimed to examine utilization of the Mentha piperita essential oil as a potential antibiofilm activity agent against S. mutans. M. piperita oil significantly (1) reduced bacterial biofilm, (2) exhibited a synergistic effect when combined with chlorhexidine, and (3) did not induce cell toxicity. Chemical analysis identified the essential oil with 99.99% certainty, revealing menthol and menthone as the primary components, constituting approximately 42% and 26%, respectively. Further, M. piperita oil eradicated preformed biofilms and inhibited biofilm formation at sub-inhibitory concentrations. M. piperita oil also interfered with bacterial quorum sensing communication and did not produce any apparent cell toxicity in immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT). M. piperita represented an alternative substance for combating S. mutans and biofilm formation and a potential combination option with chlorhexidine to minimize side effects. An in-situ performance assessment requires further studies.

Abstract
The present paper deals with the preparation and annotation of a surfactin(s) derived from a culture of the endophytic bacterium Bacillus 15 F. The LC-MS analysis of the acetonitrile fraction confirmed the presence of surfactins Leu/Ile7 C15, Leu/Ile7 C14 and Leu/Ile7 C13 with [M+H]+ at m/z 1036.6895, 1022.6741 and 1008.6581, respectively. Various concentrations of the surfactin(s) (hereafter referred to as surfactin-15 F) were used to reduce the adhesion of Staphylococcus epidermidis S61, which served as a model for studying antibiofilm activity on polystyrene surfaces. Incubation of Staphylococcus epidermidis S61 with 62.5 µg/ml of surfactin-15 F resulted in almost complete inhibition of biofilm formation (90.3 ± 3.33 %), and a significant reduction of cell viability (resazurin-based fluorescence was more than 200 times lower). The antiadhesive effect of surfactin-15 F was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Surfactin-15 F demonstrated an eradication effect against preformed biofilm, causing severe disruption of Staphylococcus epidermidis S61 biofilm structure and reducing viability. The results suggest that surfactins produced by endophytic bacteria could be an alternative to synthetic products. Surfactin-15 F, used in wound dressings, demonstrated an efficient treatment of the preformed Staphylococcus epidermidis S61 biofilm, and thus having a great potential in medical applications.

Abstract
Owing to their extensive biological potential, essential oils (EOs) and their bioactive phytochemicals have gained attention from the scientific community. Within this domain, Terpinen-4-ol (T-4-ol), a bioactive monoterpene alcohol and the major constituent of tea tree oil (TTO), has made its way into translational research. Recent literature on T-4-ol strongly indicates its diverse pharmacological properties, including but not limited to antimicrobial, antivirulent, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, and anti-cancer effects. Hence, this review is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the sources, bioavailability, safety, pharmaceutical delivery systems, and multifaceted biological properties of T-4-ol, emphasizing its medicinal potential for widescale application. The antibacterial and antifungal effectiveness of T-4-ol has been discussed, encompassing its role in combating a broad spectrum of bacterial and fungal pathogens. The review delves into the antivirulent prospects of T-4-ol, shedding light on its ability to attenuate virulence and mitigate bacterial pathogenesis. Scientific literature on the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of T-4-ol highlighting its role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species and modulating inflammatory pathways has also been collated. Furthermore, the review elaborates on the cardioprotective and anti-hypertensive properties of T-4-ol and augments literature on its anti-cancer mechanism against various cancer cell lines. The review also provides in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical formulations of T-4-ol and recent knowledge about its application in clinical/field trials. The exploration of these diverse attributes positions T-4-ol as a promising candidate for further research and therapeutic repurposing in various biomedical applications.

Abstract
Microbial biofilm formation represents a serious problem for both food industry and households. Natural biofilms are formed mostly by multiple species, and show resistance against most of the usual sanitizers. In this study, the effects of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), marjoram (Origanum majorana) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oils (EOs) and their main components (cinnamaldehyde, terpinene-4-ol, and thymol) were investigated on four-species biofilms of Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas putida and Staphylococcus aureus. Minimum bactericide concentration (MBC) and killing time were determined by means of the microdilution method. MBC of the investigated EOs and components was between 0.5 mg/mL (cinnamaldehyde) to 25 mg/mL (terpinene-4-ol). Killing times for the four-species suspension were 5 or 10 min, time spans usable in the food industry. For eradication of the mixed-population biofilm from stainless steel (SS), polypropylene (PP), tile and wood surfaces, EO- or EO component-based disinfectant solutions were developed, and their effects were compared to a peracetic acid-based industrial sanitizer (HC-DPE). Total eradication of biofilms (99.9%) was achieved, with solutions containing cinnamon and thyme EO and EO components, from SS and PP, but not from tile or wood surfaces. Apparently, cinnamon EO, terpinene-4-ol and thymol have better disinfectant activity than HC-DPE.

Abstract
Today, antibiotic therapies that previously worked well against certain bacteria due to their natural sensitivity, are becoming less effective. Honey has been proven to inhibit the biofilm formation of some respiratory bacteria, however few data are available on how the storage time affects the antibacterial effect. The activity of black locust, goldenrod, linden and sunflower honeys from three consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022) was analyzed in 2022 against Gram-negative (Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Streptococcus pneumoniae) bacteria using in vitro microbiological methods. After determining the physicochemical parameters of honey, broth microdilution was applied to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of each honey type against each bacterium, and crystal violet assay was used to test their antibiofilm effect. The possible mechanism of action was explored with membrane degradation test, while structural changes were illustrated with scanning electron microscopy. Honeys stored for one or two years were darker than fresh honeys, while older honeys had significantly lower antibacterial activity. The most remarkable inhibitory effect was exerted by linden and sunflower honeys, and P. aeruginosa proved to be the most resistant bacterium. Based on our results, honey intended for medicinal purposes should be used as fresh as possible during a treatment.

Abstract
Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causes a devastating bacterial leaf blight in rice. Here, the antimicrobial effects of D-limonene, L-limonene, and its oxidative derivative carveol against Xoo were investigated. We revealed that carveol treatment at ≥ 0.1 mM in liquid culture resulted in significant decrease in Xoo growth rate (> 40%) in a concentration-dependent manner, and over 1 mM, no growth was observed. The treatment with D-limonene and L-limonene also inhibited the Xoo growth but to a lesser extent compared to carveol. These results were further elaborated with the assays of motility, biofilm formation and xanthomonadin production. The carveol treatment over 1 mM caused no motilities, basal level of biofilm formation (< 10%), and significantly reduced xanthomonadin production. The biofilm formation after the treatment with two limonene isomers was decreased in a concentration-dependent manner, but the degree of the effect was not comparable to carveol. In addition, there was negligible effect on the xanthomonadin production mediated by the treatment of two limonene isomers. Field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) unveiled that all three compounds used in this study cause severe ultrastructural morphological changes in Xoo cells, showing shrinking, shriveling, and holes on their surface. Moreover, quantitative real-time PCR revealed that carveol and D-limonene treatment significantly down-regulated the expression levels of genes involved in virulence and biofilm formation of Xoo, but not with L-limonene. Together, we suggest that limonenes and carveol will be the candidates of interest in the development of biological pesticides.

Abstract
The irresponsible overuse of antibiotics has increased the occurrence of resistant bacterial strains, which represents one of the biggest patient safety risks today. Due to antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in bacteria, it is becoming increasingly difficult to suppress the bacterial strains responsible for various chronic infections. Honey was proven to inhibit bacterial growth and biofilm development, offering an alternative solution in the treatment of resistant infections and chronic wounds. Our studies included chestnut honey, valued for its high antibacterial activity, and the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and S. epidermidis, known to form multi-species biofilm communities. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of chestnut honey were determined for each bacterial strain. Afterwards, the mixed bacterial biofilms were treated with chestnut honey at different stages of maturity (incubation times: 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 h). The extent of biofilm inhibition was measured with a crystal violet assay and demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As the incubation time increased and the biofilm became more mature, inhibition rates decreased gradually. The most sensitive biofilm was the combination MRSA-S. epidermidis, with a 93.5% inhibition rate after 2 h of incubation. Our results revealed that chestnut honey is suitable for suppressing the initial and moderately mature stages of mixed biofilms.

Abstract
Bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis is a major obstacle to walnut production. EPS66A, derived from Streptomyces sp. strain HL-66, has various beneficial properties, including broad-spectrum microbe inhibition and plant disease resistance induction. To understand the effects of Xaj and EPS66A on walnut, a comprehensive analysis of the metabolome and transcriptome was conducted. While EPS66A did not directly inhibit Xaj on agar media, applying it at 200 μg/mL, 24 h after Xaj inoculation on walnut leaves, significantly reduced bacterial blight in a greenhouse. Additionally, EPS66A increased phenolic and flavonoid concentrations and enhanced enzymatic activities associated with resistance, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase. Differential expression of eleven metabolites and fourteen genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis pathway was observed. Consequently, EPS66A application induced systemic resistance in walnuts, effectively preventing Xaj infection. This study provides insights into the flavonoid biosynthesis mechanism underlying EPS66A-induced resistance in walnuts.

Abstract
This investigation aims to highlight the applicability of a potent eco-friendly developed composite film to combat the Escherichia coli biofilm formed in a model food system. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized using green methods were anchored on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Subsequently, nano-chitosan (NCh) solutions were used to disperse the synthesized nanoparticles and cinnamon essential oil (CEO). These solutions, containing various concentrations of CNC@ZnO NPs and CEO, were sequentially coated onto cellulosic papers to inhibit Escherichia coli biofilms on grey zucchini slices. Six films were developed, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, biodegradation, and mechanical properties were assessed. The film containing 5 % nano-emulsified CEO + 3 % dispersed CNC@ZnO nano-hybrid in an NCh solution was selected for further testing since it exhibited the largest zone of inhibition (34.32 mm) against E. coli and the highest anti-biofilm activity on biofilms developed on glass surfaces. The efficacy of the film against biofilms on zucchini surfaces was temperature-dependent. During 60 h, the selected film resulted in log reductions of approximately 4.5 logs, 2.85 logs, and 1.57 logs at 10 °C, 25 °C, and 37 °C, respectively. Applying the selected film onto zucchini surfaces containing biofilm structures leads to the disappearance of the distinctive three-dimensional biofilm framework. This innovative anti-biofilm film offers considerable potential in combatting biofilm issues on food surfaces. The film also preserved the sensory quality of zucchini evaluated for up to 60 days.

Abstract
Plants of the genus Prangos are intensively investigated as potential new sources of bioactive isolated products. In this work, the chemical composition of volatile constituents (essential oils and headspace volatiles) and dichloromethane extracts, as well as antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of essential oils and MFDEs (methanol fractions of dichloromethane extracts) of Prangos trifida from Serbia, were investigated. Volatiles of roots, leaves, stems and fruits, and fatty acids and phytosterols in dichloromethane extracts of roots and fruits were analyzed by GC-FID-MS, whereas coumarins in MFDEs by LC-MS and some isolated coumarins by 1H-NMR. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations/minimum fungicidal concentrations (MBCs/MFCs) of essential oils and MFDEs were determined against 13 microorganisms. Antibiofilm activity was assessed against four microorganisms. Additionally, congo red and ergosterol binding assays were conducted to elucidate selected mechanisms of antibiofilm action in the case of Candida albicans. Total of 52 volatile constituents, 16 fatty acids, eight phytosterols and 10 coumarins were identified. Essential oils demonstrated significant activity, surpassing that of commercial food preservatives, against six tested molds from the Aspergillus, Penicillium and Trichoderma genera, as well as against bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. Most of the oils strongly inhibited the formation of biofilms by S. aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli. MFDEs exhibited noteworthy effects against B. cereus and the tested Aspergillus species, particularly A. niger, and significantly inhibited C. albicans biofilm formation. This inhibition was linked to a marked reduction in exopolysaccharide production, while antifungal mechanisms associated with ergosterol remained unaffected.

Abstract
This study compared the effect of oregano essential oil versus sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and benzalkonium chloride against the viability of adhered Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on 304 stainless steel. Oregano essential oil was effective in disrupting the biofilms of both bacteria at concentrations ranging from 0.15 to 0.52 mg mL-1. In addition, damage to stainless-steel surfaces following disinfection treatments was assessed by weight loss analysis and via visual inspection using light microscopy. Compared to the other treatments, oregano oil caused the least damage to stainless steel (~0.001% weight loss), whereas sodium hypochlorite caused the most severe damage (0.00817% weight loss) when applied at 0.5 mg mL-1. Moreover, oregano oil also had an apparent protective impact on the stainless steel as weight losses were less than for the control surfaces (distilled water only). On the other hand, sodium hypochlorite caused the most severe damage to stainless steel (0.00817% weight loss). In conclusion, oregano oil eliminated monoculture biofilms of two important foodborne pathogens on 304 stainless-steel surfaces, while at the same time minimizing damage to the surfaces compared with conventional disinfectant treatments.

Abstract
The overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of multiple-antibiotic-resistant pathogens are becoming a serious threat to health security and the economy. Reducing antimicrobial resistance requires replacing antibiotic consumption with more biocontrol strategies to improve the immunity of animals and humans. Probiotics and medicinal plants have been used as alternative treatments or preventative therapies for a variety of diseases caused by bacterial infections. Therefore, we reviewed some of the anti-virulence and bacterial toxin-inhibiting strategies that are currently being developed; this review covers strategies focused on quenching pathogen quorum sensing (QS) systems, the disruption of biofilm formation and bacterial toxin neutralization. It highlights the probable mechanism of action for probiotics and medicinal plants. Although further research is needed before a definitive statement can be made on the efficacy of any of these interventions, the current literature offers new hope and a new tool in the arsenal in the fight against bacterial virulence factors and bacterial toxins.

Abstract
The exponential growth of multiresistant bacterial strains creates the need to explore new or combined strategies to combat bacterial resistance. Medicinal plant-derived compounds against pathogenic bacteria may provide new, simple approaches to developing more environmentally friendly antimicrobial agents. Many researchers focus on exploring novel or combined strategies for combating bacterial resistance. Aromatic plants containing essential oils, such as basil, are often used as therapeutic agents in the pharmaceutical industry. Recent research has shown that basil is effective against certain harmful food phytopathogenic bacteria and has antimicrobial and anti-quorum sensing properties, which were investigated in this study. Our results have shown that the essential oil and ethanol extract of basil exhibits both antibacterial activity and anti-quorum sensing activity against some Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial species. It has also been found to have antifungal effects on C. albicans. Among the tested microorganisms, the genotypes of PI 531396, PI 296390, PI 414199, PI 253157, PI 296391, PI 652071, midnight, and Dino cultivars have been found to be more effective than other genotypes. The highest effect on quorum sensing system was found in Moonlight and Dino cultivars, PI 296391, PI 414199, PI 652070, PI 172997 and PI 190100 genotypes. Dendrogram analysis has shown that there is a relationship between different genotypes depending on microorganisms and anti-quorum sensing activity. Ames 29184, PI 207498, and PI 379412 genotypes were in the same group. Biplot analyses were performed to determine the relationship between the studied properties, and the results showed that more than 47% of the total variation was in all forms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Essential oils are becoming increasingly popular in medicinal applications because of their antimicrobial effect. Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) is a well-known and widely cultivated medicinal plant, which is used as a remedy for cold, cough and gastrointestinal symptoms. Essential oil content of thyme is responsible for its antimicrobial activity, however, it has been reported that the chemical composition of essential oils influences its biological activity. In order to explore flowering phenophases influence on the chemical composition of thyme essential oil and its antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity, plant materials were collected at the beginning of flowering, in full bloom and at the end of flowering periods in 2019. METHODS Essential oils from fresh and dried plant materials were distilled and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The antibacterial activity was performed by broth microdilution and thin layer chromatography-direct bioautography (TLC-DB) assays and the anti-biofilm effect by crystal violet assay, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy was applied to illustrate the cellular changes of bacterial cells after essential oil treatment. RESULTS Thymol (52.33-62.46%) was the main component in the thyme essential oils. Thyme oil distilled from fresh plant material and collected at the beginning of flowering period exerted the highest antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CONCLUSION The different flowering periods of Thymus vulgaris influence the antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity of its essential oils, therefore, the collection time has to be taken into consideration and not only the full bloom, but the beginning of flowering period may provide biological active thyme essential oil.

Abstract
The biological role played by essential oils extracted from aromatic plants is progressively being recognized. This study evaluated the potential antibacterial activity of ten essential oils against Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecalis by measuring their minimum inhibitory concentration. We found that essential oils exert different antimicrobial effects, with Origanum vulgare and Foeniculum vulgare demonstrating the most significant inhibitory effect on bacterial growth for C. violaceum and E. faecalis. The growth of P. aeruginosa was not affected by any essential oil concentration we used. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of essential oils reduced in C. violaceum and E. faecalis biofilm formation, violacein amount, and gelatinase activity, all of which are biomarkers of the Quorum Sensing process. These concentrations significantly affect the global methylation profiles of cytosines and adenines, thus leading to the hypothesis that the oils also exert their effects through epigenetic changes. Considering the results obtained, it is possible that essential oils can find a broad spectrum of applications in counteracting microbial contamination and preserving sterility of surfaces and foods, as well as inhibiting microbial growth of pathogens, alone or in combination with traditional antibiotics.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) with established and well-known activities against human pathogens might become new therapeutics in multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of EOs obtained from several samples of Origanum vulgare, O. syriacum, and O. majorana cultivated in Poland. EOs were analyzed by GC-MS and tested against four bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Chemical analyses showed that the Eos were characterized by a high diversity in composition. Based on the chemical data, four chemotypes of Origanum EOs were confirmed. These were carvacrol, terpineol/sabinene hydrate, caryophyllene oxide, and thymol chemotypes. Thin-layer chromatography-bioautography confirmed the presence of biologically active antibacterial components in all tested EOs. The highest number of active spots were found among EOs with cis-sabinene hydrate as the major compound. On the other hand, the largest spots of inhibition were characteristic to EOs of the carvacrol chemotype. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were evaluated for the most active EOs: O. vulgare ‘Hirtum’, O. vulgare ‘Margarita’, O. vulgare ‘Hot & Spicy’, O. majorana, and O. syriacum (I) and (II); it was shown that both Haemophilus strains were the most sensitive with an MIC value of 0.15 mg/mL for all EOs. O. majorana EO was also the most active in the MIC assay and had the highest inhibitory rate in the anti-biofilm assay against all strains. The most characteristic components present in this EO were the trans-sabinene hydrate and terpinen-4-ol. The strain with the least sensitivity was the MRSA with an MIC of 0.6 mg/mL for all EOs except for O. majorana, where the MIC value reached 0.3 mg/mL. Scanning electron microscopy performed on the Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae biofilms showed a visible decrease in the appearance of bacterial clusters under the influence of O. majorana EO.

Abstract
Natural compounds are a suitable alternative to synthetic food preservatives due to their natural origin and health-promoting properties. In the current study, phenolic-phenolic and phenolic-synthetic combinations were tested for their antibiofilm formation, anti-planktonic growth, and anti-adhesion properties against Debaryomyces hansenii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus (formerly Pichia anomala), Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The phenolics were vanillin and cinnamic acid, while the synthetic preservatives were sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sodium diacetate. The vanillin-cinnamic acid combination had synergistic effect in all the tested yeasts for the biofilm inhibition with a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) of ≤0.19 for W. anomalus, 0.25 for S. pombe, 0.31 for S. cerevisiae, and 0.5 for D. hansenii. Most of the phenolic-synthetic combinations had indifferent interaction regarding biofilm formation. The vanillin-cinnamic acid combination also had higher activity against spoilage yeasts adhesion on the abiotic surface and planktonic growth compared to the phenolic-synthetic combinations. For the phenolic-synthetic anti-planktonic activity, synergistic interaction was present in all the vanillin-synthetic combinations in S. pombe, vanillin-sodium benzoate and vanillin-potassium sorbate in S. cerevisiae, vanillin-sodium benzoate in W. anomalus, and cinnamic acid-sodium diacetate in S. pombe. These results suggest a novel antimicrobial strategy that may broaden the antimicrobial spectrum and reduce compound toxicity against food spoilage yeasts.

Abstract
Diffusion methods, including agar disk-diffusion and agar well-diffusion, as well as dilution methods such as broth and agar dilution, are frequently employed to evaluate the antimicrobial capacity of extracts and essential oils (EOs) derived from Origanum L., Syzygium aromaticum, and Citrus L. The results are reported as inhibition diameters (IDs) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), respectively. In order to investigate potential sources of variability in antimicrobial susceptibility testing results and to assess whether a correlation exists between ID and MIC measurements, meta-analytical regression models were built using in vitro data obtained through a systematic literature search. The pooled ID models revealed varied bacterial susceptibilities to the extracts and in some cases, the plant species and methodology utilised impacted the measurements obtained (p < 0.05). Lemon and orange extracts were found to be most effective against E. coli (24.4 ± 1.21 and 16.5 ± 0.84 mm, respectively), while oregano extracts exhibited the highest level of effectiveness against B. cereus (22.3 ± 1.73 mm). Clove extracts were observed to be most effective against B. cereus and demonstrated the general trend that the well-diffusion method tends to produce higher ID (20.5 ± 1.36 mm) than the disk-diffusion method (16.3 ± 1.40 mm). Although the plant species had an impact on MIC, there is no evidence to suggest that the methodology employed had an effect on MIC (p > 0.05). The ID–MIC model revealed an inverse correlation (R2 = 47.7%) and highlighted the fact that the extract dose highly modulated the relationship (p < 0.0001). The findings of this study encourage the use of extracts and EOs derived from Origanum, Syzygium aromaticum, and Citrus to prevent bacterial growth. Additionally, this study underscores several variables that can impact ID and MIC measurements and expose the correlation between the two types of results.

Abstract
Honey is known as an alternative remedy for the treatment of wounds. To evaluate the potential of five Hungarian honey types against wound-associated bacteria, in vitro microbiological assays were conducted on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined with the broth macrodilution method, and biofilm degradation capacity was tested with a crystal violet assay. To understand the underlying mechanisms, the effects of honey treatments were assessed on bacterial membrane integrity and quorum sensing (QS). The highest antibacterial activity, indicated by the lowest MIC values, as well as the highest biofilm inhibition rates and membrane disruption, was displayed by chestnut and linden honeys. The most sensitive bacterium was S. epidermidis. Bacterial membrane degradation took place 40 min after treatment with honey solutions of at least a 40% concentration. Each honey sample exhibited anti-QS activity, which was most pronounced in the case of chestnut honey. It was concluded that the antibacterial, biofilm-inhibiting and anti-QS activities of linden and chestnut honeys were superior to those of acacia, goldenrod and milkweed honeys. In addition to the floral source, the antibacterial effect of honey is influenced by the microbial species treated. The use of honey in wound treatment can be justified by its diverse antibacterial mechanisms.

Abstract
The rapid development of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens adds urgency to search for novel and safe drugs having promising action on new and re-emerging infectious pathogens. Serratia marcescens is an MDR pathogen that causes several-healthcare associated infections. Curbing bacterial virulence, rather than inhibiting its growth, is a promising strategy to diminish the pathogenesis of infectious bacteria, reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance, and boost the host immune power to eradicate infections. Bergamot essential oil (BEO) is a remarkable source of promising therapeutics against pathogens. Therefore, the present investigation aimed to analyze the major phytocompounds from BEO against S. marcescens virulent proteins using in silico studies. The analysis of BEO phytocompounds was achieved by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. The molecular docking was carried out using the SP and XP docking protocol of the Glide program. The drug-likeness and pharmacokinetics properties (ADMET properties) were analyzed with SwissADME and pkCSM server. The results revealed that the major compounds present in BEO are Linalool (8.17%), D-Limonene (21.26%), and Linalyl acetate (26.91%). Molecular docking analysis revealed that these compounds docked strongly within the binding cavities of Serratia protease and FabI model which in turn curb the pathogenesis of this bacteria. Linalool interacted with the Serratia protease and FabI with a binding energy of - 3.130 kcal/mol and - 3.939 kcal/mol, respectively. Based on the pharmacokinetics findings all lead BEO phytocompounds appear to be promising drug candidates. Overall, these results represent a significant step in the development of plant-based compounds as a promising inhibitor of the virulent proteins of the MDR S. marcescens.

Abstract
The present study evaluates the chemical compositions and antioxidant and antipathogenic properties of commercial orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) essential oils obtained using the cold-press method (EOP) and the cold-press method followed by steam distillation (EOPD). The chemical compositions of the volatilizable fractions, determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, were similar in both samples. A relatively large amount of γ-terpinene was found in the EOPD (1.75%) as compared to the EOP (0.84%). Monoterpene hydrocarbons with limonene (90.4-89.8%) followed by myrcene (3.2-3.1%) as the main compounds comprised the principal phytochemical group. The non-volatile phenolics were eight times higher in the EOP than in the EOPD. Several assays with different specificity levels were used to study the antioxidant activity. Although both essential oils presented similar reducing capacities, the radical elimination ability was higher for the EOP. Regarding the antipathogenic properties, the EOs inhibited the biomass and cell viability of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. Furthermore, both EOs similarly attenuated the production of elastase, pyocyanin, and quorum-sensing autoinducers as assessed using Gram-negative bacteria. The EOP and EOPD showed important antioxidant and antipathogenic properties, so they could represent natural alternatives to extend the shelf life of food products by preventing oxidation and contamination caused by microbial spoilage.

In Vitro and In Vivo Studies of Heraclenol as a Novel Bacterial Histidine Biosynthesis Inhibitor against Invasive and Biofilm-Forming Uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Abstract
Globally, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most frequent bacterial infections. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the predominant etiological agents causing community and healthcare-associated UTIs. Biofilm formation is an important pathogenetic mechanism of UPEC responsible for chronic and recurrent infections. The development of high levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among UPEC has complicated therapeutic management. Newer antimicrobial agents are needed to tackle the increasing trend of AMR and inhibit biofilms. Heraclenol is a natural furocoumarin compound that inhibits histidine biosynthesis selectively. In this study, for the first time, we have demonstrated the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of heraclenol against UPEC. The drug reduced the bacterial load in the murine catheter UTI model by ≥4 logs. The drug effectively reduced bacterial loads in kidney, bladder, and urine samples. On histopathological examination, heraclenol treatment showed a reversal of inflammatory changes in the bladder and kidney tissues. It reduced the biofilm formation by 70%. The MIC value of heraclenol was observed to be high (1024 µg/mL), though the drug at MIC concentration did not have significant cytotoxicity on the Vero cell line. Further molecular docking revealed that heraclenol binds to the active site of the HisC, thereby preventing its activation by native substrate, which might be responsible for its antibacterial and antibiofilm activity. Since the high MIC of heraclenol is not achievable clinically in human tissues, further chemical modifications will be required to lower the drug's MIC value and increase its potency. Alternatively, its synergistic action with other antimicrobials may also be studied.

Exploration of the antimicrobial signatures of culinary spices has become an important industrial tool to suppress the growth of foodborne bacterial pathogens including Vibrio spp. The antibiofilm and antimotility activities of some selected natural antimicrobial agents were then evaluated. All the extracts showed vibriostatic activities with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 0.1% to 0.4%. Cinnamon and black pepper demonstrated significant biofilm inhibition activity from 94.77% to 99.77% when administered at 100% MIC. Black pepper extract also demonstrated the highest biofilm inhibition activity against the established biofilms of V. cholerae O1 and O139. Cinnamon, calabash nutmeg, and black pepper significantly inhibited swimming and swarming motility by 85.51% to 94.87%. Sub-MICs (50% and 75%) of some extracts were also effective as an antibiofilm and antimotility agent against the tested strains. The findings of our study suggest the potential application of natural antimicrobial agents such as spices in food to inhibit biofilm formation and motility, which consequently mitigate the virulence and persistence of the pathogen in the food supply chain.

Abstract
Disruption of quorum sensing pathway of pathogenic microbes is considered as
novel approach to fight against infectious diseases. The current study was
planned to evaluate the antibiofilm and quorum sensing inhibitory potential of
Lagerstroemia speciosa. Antibacterial and antibiofilm
potential of L. speciosa extracts was determined through agar
well diffusion and crystal violet assay against sinusitis isolates, that is,
Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus mirabilis, and
Klebsiella pneumoniae, while quorum sensing inhibition efficacy of
L. speciosa extracts was determined through violacein
inhibition assay using Chromobacterium pseudoviolaceum as
bacterial model. The methanolic extract of L.
speciosa presented the highest antimicrobial activity against
E. faecalis and antibiofilm activity against K.
pneumoniae (77.42 ± 1.51%), while
n-hexane extract was found to be least active against all
tested bacterial strains. Quorum sensing inhibition activity of
L. speciosa extracts against C.
pseudoviolaceum showed significant dose-dependent inhibition in
violacein production by different concentrations of methanolic extract.
Furthermore, none of the extracts of L. speciosa showed any
hemolytic activity against human RBCs and hold considerable thrombolytic
potential in comparison to streptokinase (75.9 ± .46%). In conclusion, findings
suggest that L. speciosa leaves are excellent source of
phytochemicals with potent antibiofilm and quorum sensing inhibition
potential.

Abstract
The biofilm formation of bacteria in different parts of the human body can influence the success of antibiotic therapy. Essential oils (EOs) and their components are becoming increasingly popular in point of view of medicinal applications, because of their antibacterial efficacy. The immortelle EO has been used traditionally as an expectorant; however, there are no studies summarizing its antibacterial effect against respiratory tract bacteria. Our aim was to investigate the antibacterial and biofilm inhibitory activity of immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) EO against respiratory tract pathogens such as Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In order to prove the antibacterial effect of the immortelle EO, broth microdilution and biofilm inhibition tests, and membrane damage assay were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to identify the structural modifications in bacterial cells. Our results showed that immortelle EO has antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects against respiratory tract bacteria used in this study. H. parainfluenzae was the most sensitive to each treatment, however, P. aeruginosa was the most resistant bacteria. In conclusion, the studied EO may have a role in the treatment of respiratory tract infections due to their antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication in bacteria that couples gene expression through the accumulation of signaling molecules, which finally induce the production of several virulence factors and modulate bacterial behaviors. Plants have evolved an array of quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs) to inhibit the pathogens, of which aromatic compounds are widely recognized. The essential oil of Melaleuca bracteata was found to exhibit anti-quorum sensing activity, and its principal bioactive component, methyleugenol (ME), had been isolated in our previous study. Here, ME interfered effectively with the QS-regulated processes of toxin secretion in Chomobacterium violaceum ATCC31532, resulting in strong inhibition of QS genes, cviR, cviI, vioA-E, hmsHNR, lasA-B, pilE1-3, and hcnABC, leading to impaired virulence, including violacein production, biofilm biomass, and swarming motility. The accumulation of the signal molecule (N-hexanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone, C6-HSL) in C. violaceum declined upon treatment with ME, suggesting an inhibition effect on the C6-HSL production, and the ME was also capable of degrading the C6-HSL in vitro assay. Molecular docking technique and the consumption change of exogenous C6-HSL in C. violaceum CV026 revealed the anti-QS mechanism of ME consisted of inhibition of C6-HSL production, potentially via interaction with CviR and/or CviI protein. Collectively, the isolated ME, the principal active components of M. bracteata EO, exhibited a wide range of inhibition processes targeting C. violaceum QS system, which supports the potential anti-pathogenic use of M. bracteata EO and ME for treatment of pathogen contamination caused by bacterial pathogens.

Abstract
The high occurrence and mortality rates related to candidiasis emphasize the urgent need to introduce new therapeutic approaches to treat this infection. Eugenol, the main phenolic component of Clove and Cinnamomum essential oil, has been used to inhibit growth and different virulence factors of Candida, including strains with decreased susceptibility to antifungals, particularly fluconazole. The results showed that this compound could bind to Candida membrane and decrease ergosterol biosynthesis, consequently leading to cell wall and membrane damage. Additionally, eugenol not only reduced germ tube formation, which reduces nutrient absorption from host tissues, but it also increased the levels of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species, which induces oxidative stress and causes high permeability in the fungal cell membrane. Eugenol inhibited Candida cells’ adhesion capacity; additionally, this compound inhibited the formation of biofilms and eliminated established Candida biofilms on a variety of surfaces. Furthermore, by disrupting fungal cell integrity, eugenol could boost the entry of the antifungal drugs into the Candida cell, improving treatment efficacy. Therefore, eugenol could be used in the clinical management of various presentations of candidiasis, especially mucocutaneous presentations such as oral and vulvovaginal infections. However, further investigations, including in vivo and animal studies, toxicology studies and clinical trials, as well as molecular analysis, are needed to improve formulations and develop novel antifungal agents based on eugenol.

Abstract
In the last decade, Candida glabrata has become an important emerging opportunistic pathogen not only because of the increase in nosocomial infections frequency but also because of its ability to form biofilms and its innate resistance to commercial antifungals. These characteristics make this pathogen a major problem in hospital settings, including problems regarding equipment, and in immunosuppressed patients, who are at high risk for candidemia. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of and search for new antifungal drugs. In this study, the efficacy of two dendritic wedges with 4-phenyl butyric acid (PBA) at the focal point and cationic charges on the surface ArCO2G2(SNMe3I)4 (1) and ArCO2G3(SNMe3I)8 (2) was studied against C. glabrata strain to inhibit the formation of biofilms and eliminate established biofilm. For this, MBIC (minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration), MBDC (minimum biofilm damaging concentrations), as well as MFCB (minimum fungicidal concentration in biofilm) and MBEC (minimum biofilm eradicating concentration) were determined. In addition, different combinations of dendrons and amphotericin B were tested to study possible synergistic effects. On the other hand, cytotoxicity studies were performed. C. glabrata cells and biofilm structure were visualized by confocal microscopy. ArCO2G2(SNMe3I)4 (1) and ArCO2G3(SNMe3I)8 (2) dendrons showed both an MBIC of 8 mg/L and a MBDC of 32 mg/L and 64 mg/L, respectively. These dendrons managed to eradicate the entirety of an established biofilm. In combination with the antifungal amphotericin, it was possible to prevent the generation of biofilms and eradicate established biofilms at lower concentrations than those required individually for each compound at these conditions.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of four unifloral honeys on the food-borne pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, by analyzing the honeys’ antibacterial and biofilm degradation effects, as well as their antioxidant activity and element content. Linden and milkweed honeys represented light colored honeys, while goldenrod and chestnut honeys the darker ones. The botanical origin of the honeys and the relative frequency of their pollen types were established with melissopalynological analysis. The antioxidant capacities were calculated by two single electron transfer based methods (TRC – Total Reducing Capacity and TEAC – Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) and a hydrogen atom transfer based assay (ORAC – Oxygen Radical Absorbance). The amount of four main macro- and two microelements was quantified. The antibacterial activity was determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and membrane degradation assays. Furthermore, the biofilm degradation power of the samples was studied as well. The light colored linden honey with the lowest TRC and TEAC, but with the highest ORAC antioxidant activity and high element content showed the best antibacterial and biofilm degradation effects. Meanwhile, the dark colored chestnut honey with significantly higher single electron transfer based antioxidant capacities, with high element content, but lower ORAC showed significantly higher MIC and lower membrane degradation activity than linden honey. In case of biofilm degradation, both honey types gave similarly high inhibitory effect. Goldenrod honey was similarly effective regarding its MIC properties like chestnut honey, but had significantly lower antioxidant potential and ability to disrupt bacterial membranes and biofilms. Milkweed honey was the honey type with the lowest bioactivity and element content. The honeys, unequivocally characterized by their antioxidant characters and element content, displayed different antibacterial and biofilm degradation effects. In addition, some honey traits were found to be good predictors of the antimicrobial potential of honeys: ORAC assay showed correlation with the MIC values of both bacteria, and strict correlation was found between the mineral content and the antibiofilm activity of the studied honeys. Our studies indicate that unifloral honeys, such as linden and chestnut honeys, are plant-derived products with great potential as antimicrobial agents in food preservation, exhibiting remarkable antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogens.

Abstract
Due to the potent antibacterial properties of Cinnamomum and its derivatives, particularly cinnamaldehyde, recent studies have used these compounds to inhibit the growth of the most prevalent bacterial and fungal biofilms. By inhibiting flagella protein synthesis and swarming motility, Cinnamomum could suppress bacterial attachment, colonization, and biofilm formation in an early stage. Furthermore, by downregulation of Cyclic di‐guanosine monophosphate (c‐di‐GMP), biofilm-related genes, and quorum sensing, this compound suppresses intercellular adherence and accumulation of bacterial cells in biofilm and inhibits important bacterial virulence factors. In addition, Cinnamomum could lead to preformed biofilm elimination by enhancing membrane permeability and the disruption of membrane integrity. Moreover, this substance suppresses the Candida species adherence to the oral epithelial cells, leading to the cell wall deformities, damage, and leakages of intracellular material that may contribute to the established Candida’s biofilm elimination. Therefore, by inhibiting biofilm maturation and destroying the external structure of biofilm, Cinnamomum could boost antibiotic treatment success in combination therapy. However, Cinnamomum has several disadvantages, such as poor solubility in aqueous solution, instability, and volatility; thus, the use of different drug-delivery systems may resolve these limitations and should be further considered in future investigations. Overall, Cinnamomum could be a promising agent for inhibiting microbial biofilm-associated infection and could be used as a catheter and other medical materials surface coatings to suppress biofilm formation. Nonetheless, further in vitro toxicology analysis and animal experiments are required to confirm the reported molecular antibiofilm effect of Cinnamomum and its derivative components against microbial biofilm.

Abstract
Biofilms are groups of adherent cell communities that cohere to the biotic and abiotic surfaces with the help of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS allow bacteria to form a biofilm that facilitates their binding to biotic and abiotic surfaces and provides resistance to the host immune responses and to antibiotics. There are efforts that have led to the development of natural compounds that can overcome this biofilm-mediated resistance. Essential oils (EOs) are a unique mixture of compounds that plays a key role in preventing the development of biofilm. The present overview focusses on the role of various types of citrus essential oils in acting against the biofilm, and the antibiofilm properties of natural compounds that may show an avenue to treat the multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Abstract
Microbial spoilage of fish is attributed to quorum sensing (QS)-based activities. QS is a communication process between the cells in which microorganisms secrete and sense the specific chemicals (autoinductors, AIs) that regulate proteolysis, lipolysis, and biofilm formation. These activities change the organoleptic characteristics and reduce the safety of the products. Although the microbial community of fish is diverse and may consist of a range of bacterial strains, the deterioration of fish-based products is attributed to the growth and activity of Pseudomonas spp. This work summarizes recent advancements to assess the influence of QS mechanisms on seafood spoilage by Pseudomonas spp. The quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) in the context of fish preservation has also been discussed. Detailed recognition of this phenomenon is crucial in establishing effective strategies to prevent the premature deterioration of fish-based products.

Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a serious health concern worldwide. Treatment of UTIs is becoming a challenge as uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), which is the most common etiological agent, has developed resistance to the main classes of antibiotics. Small molecules that interfere with metabolic processes rather than growth are attractive alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Repurposing of already known drugs for treating infectious diseases could be an attractive avenue for finding novel therapeutics against infections caused by UPEC. Virtual screenings enable the rapid and economical identification of target ligands from large libraries of compounds, reducing the cost and time of traditional drug discovery. Moreover, the drugs that have been approved by the FDA have low cytotoxicity and good pharmacological characteristics. In this work, we targeted the HisC enzyme of the histidine biosynthetic pathway as enzymes of this pathway are absent in humans. We screened the library of FDA-approved drugs against HisC via molecular docking, and four hits (Docetaxel, Suramin, Digitoxin, and Nystatin) showing the highest binding energy were selected. These were further tested for antibacterial activity, which was observed only for Docetaxel (MIC value of 640 μg/ml); therefore, Docetaxel was further tested for its efficacy in vivo in murine catheter UTI model and antibiofilm activity using crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy. Docetaxel inhibited biofilm formation and reduced the bacterial load in urine, kidney, and bladder. Docking studies revealed that Docetaxel acts by blocking the binding site of HisC to the native substrate by competitive inhibition. Docetaxel may be a potential new inhibitor for UPEC with antibacterial and antibiofilm capability.

Abstract
Population of drug-resistant bacteria have increased at an alarming rate in the past few decades. The major reason for increasing drug resistance is the lack of new antibiotics and limited drug targets. It has therefore been a vital task to develop new antibiotics with different drug targets. Two such targets are biofilm formation and quorum sensing. Quorum sensing is cell to cell communication used by bacteria that initiates many important survival processes and aids in establishing pathogenesis. Both biofilm and quorum sensing are inter-related processes and play a major role in physiological and pathogenesis processes. In this study, five novel imidazole derivatives (IMA-1-IMA-5) were synthesised and tested for their antibacterial and anti-quorum sensing activities against Chromobacterium violaceum using different in silico and in vitro techniques following the standard protocols. In silico results revealed that all compounds were able to effectively bind to and interact sufficiently with the target protein CviR. CviR is a protein to which autoinducers bind to initiate the quorum sensing process. In silico results also revealed that the compounds generated favourable structural dynamics implying that the compounds would be able to effectively bind to CviR and inhibit quorum sensing. Susceptibility results revealed that IMA-1 is the most active of all the derivatives against both planktonic cells and biofilms. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of anti-quorum sensing activity at sub-inhibitory concentrations of these compounds also revealed high activity for IMA-1. Down-regulation of most of the quorum sensing genes when cells were treated with the test compounds affirmed the high anti-quorum sensing activities of these compounds. The results from this study are promising and urges on the use of anti-quorum sensing and biofilm disrupting molecules to combat multi-drug resistance problem.

Abstract
Essential oils protect plants, and due to their natural origin, there is much interest in using them as antimicrobial agents. The purpose of this study was to determine the phytochemical constituents of ginger essential oil (GEO), antimicrobial activity, and mode of action against Burkholderia glumae (Bg). In addition, the volatile active compounds (AIs) were studied using GC-MS, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. A total of 45 phytochemical components were detected and the most prevalent bioactive compounds were Geranial, 1,8-Cineole, Neral, Camphene, α-Zingiberene, and α-Farnesene. Furthermore, it was found that the most dominant terpenes in GEO were monoterpenes. The diameter zone of inhibition values varied from 7.1 to 15 mm depending on the concentration tested. In addition, the MIC and MBC values were 112.5 µL/mL. Faster killing time and lower membrane potential were observed in 1xMIC treatment compared to 0.5xMIC treatment, whereas the control had the maximum values. From observations of various images, it was concluded that the mode of action of GEO affected the cytoplasmic membrane, causing it to lose its integrity and increase its permeability. Therefore, the antibacterial study and mechanism of action revealed that GEO is very effective in suppressing the growth of B. glumae.

Antimicrobial, Multidrug Resistance Reversal and Biofilm Formation Inhibitory Effect of Origanum majorana Extracts, Essential Oil and Monoterpenes. PLANTS 2022; 11:plants11111432. Abstract
Origanum majorana L. is a widely used medicinal plant; its distilled oil and preparations are extensively utilised in the phytotherapy and food industries. The objective of this study is to evaluate the extracts and the essential oil (EO) of Origanum majorana L, and its monoterpenes for antimicrobial, bacterial multidrug resistance reversing, and biofilm formation inhibitory potency. The composition of EO and n-hexane extract was characterized by GC-MS. In the essential oil terpinen-4-ol (24.92%), trans-sabinene hydrate (25.18%), γ-terpinene (6.48%), cis-sabinene hydrate (5.44%), p-cymene (4.72%), sabinene (4.53%), α-terpineol (4.43%), and α-terpinene (3.00%) were found as the main constituents while trans-sabinene hydrate (1.43%), and terpinen-4-ol (0.19%) were detected in the n-hexane extract besides a series of hydrocarbons. The antibacterial activity of EO and terpinen-4-ol, α-terpinene, and linalool was also assessed against sensitive and drug-resistant S. aureus, and E. coli strains with MIC values of 0.125–0.250% and 30–61 µM, respectively. In the efflux pump (EP) inhibitory assay, made by the ethidium bromide accumulation method in E. coli ATCC 25922, and AG100 and S. aureus ATCC 25923, and MRSA ATCC 43300 strains, EO exhibited substantial activity, especially in the E. coli ATCC 25922 strain. Among the EO constituents, only sabinene was an EP inhibitor in sensitive Escherichia strain. In the case of S. aureus strains, EO and sabinene hydrate exhibited moderate potency on the drug-resistant phenotype. The antibiofilm effects of the samples were tested by crystal violet staining at sub-MIC concentration. γ-Terpinene, terpinen-4-ol, sabinene, sabinene hydrate and linalool were found to be effective inhibitors of biofilm formation (inhibition 36–86%) on E. coli ATCC 25922 and S. aureus MRSA ATCC 43300, while EO was ineffective on these strains. In contrast to this, biofilms formed by E. coli AG100 and S. aureus ATCC 25923 were significantly inhibited by the EO; however, it was not affected by any of the monoterpenes. This observation suggests that the antibiofilm effect might be altered by the synergism between the components of the essential oil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The potential of essential oils (EOs) and of their principal constituents for eradication of biofilm and at the same time the research of new potential acetylcholinesterase inhibitors is gaining increasing interest in last years. The aims of this study were to determine the chemical composition and to evaluate the antibacterial, cytotoxic, and anti-acetylcholinesterase properties of Myrtus communis leaves essential oil and its main constituents. METHODS Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation of M. communis L. leaves and was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The antimicrobial activity was carried out against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The microdilution method was used to estimate the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Then, the capacity of essential oil and its main constituent to inhibit biofilm growth, with the method of O'Toole and Kolterand, and the metabolic activity of biofilm cells through the MTT colorimetric method were evaluated at different times. Moreover, was studied the potential cytotoxic activity against SH-SY5Y cell line with MTT assay and the anti-acetylcholinesterase activity using Ellman's assay. RESULTS Myrtenyl-acetate, 1,8 cineole, α-pinene, and linalool were the main components in the EO. The myrtle EO, at the minimum tested dose (0.4 mg/ml), inhibited S. aureus biofilm by 42.1% and was capable of inhibiting the biofilm cell metabolism in all tested strains, except Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, the EO showed good cytotoxic and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities IC50 of 209.1 and 32.8 μg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that myrtle EO and its main constituents could be used as possible products that could act against the resistant pathogenic species E. coli, P. aeruginosa, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus, on the other hand, as possible coadjutants in the treatment of neurological diseases.

Abstract
The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is often involved in airway infections of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. It persists in the hostile CF lung environment, inducing chronic infections due to the production of several virulence factors. In this regard, the ability to form a biofilm plays a pivotal role in CF airway colonization by P. aeruginosa. Bacterial virulence mitigation and bacterial cell adhesion hampering and/or biofilm reduced formation could represent a major target for the development of new therapeutic treatments for infection control. Essential oils (EOs) are being considered as a potential alternative in clinical settings for the prevention, treatment, and control of infections sustained by microbial biofilms. EOs are complex mixtures of different classes of organic compounds, usually used for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections in traditional medicine. Recently, a wide series of EOs were investigated for their ability to modulate biofilm production by different pathogens comprising S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. aeruginosa strains. Machine learning (ML) algorithms were applied to develop classification models in order to suggest a possible antibiofilm action for each chemical component of the studied EOs. In the present study, we assessed the biofilm growth modulation exerted by 61 commercial EOs on a selected number of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from CF patients. Furthermore, ML has been used to shed light on the EO chemical components likely responsible for the positive or negative modulation of bacterial biofilm formation.

Abstract
The Pimenta dioica essential oil and its main compound (eugenol) were tested for their antibacterial potency against eight Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria implicated in food intoxication. This essential oil and its main component were evaluated for their ability in inhibiting Quorum sensing (QS)-dependent mechanisms such as motility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, production of violacein by Chromobacterium violaceum and biofilm formation on stainless steel and glass surfaces. Our results demonstrated that P. dioica essential oil and eugenol were active against all tested strains with a maximum of inhibition against Listeria monocytogenes CECT 933 (26.66 ± 0.57 mm). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of the tested essential oil and eugenol was about 0.048 mg/mL for all strains. The obtained results demonstrated that 4CMI eugenol inhibited foodborne strains biofilm formation on the glass strips by 73.79% and by 75.90% on polystyrene. Moreover, 0.048 mg/mL (MIC) of P. dioica essential oil inhibited the violacein production by 69.30%. At 100 µg/mL, P. dioica oil and eugenol affected the motility of PAO1 by 42.00% and 29.17%, respectively. Low concentrations of P. dioica essential oil are active against the quorum sensing phenomena and biofilm potency. Thus, this essential oil could be further investigated for new molecules useful for the treatment of toxi-alimentary infections.

Abstract
Tea tree oil (TTO) exhibits a potent antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activity and is commonly used in skincare products. However, it is not clear whether TTO can protect gut barrier damage in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Herein, we report the impact of terpinen-4-ol (TER, the primary constituent of TTO), on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal epithelial cell barrier function impairment in intestinal porcine epithelial cell lines (IPEC-J2) and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced IBD in mice. TER protected against LPS-induced damage in IPEC-J2 cells in vitro and attenuated DSS-induced colitis in vivo. Added TER promoted the tight junction (TJ) proteins expressing in vitro and in vivo and attenuated the LPS-induced upregulation of ERK phosphorylation in IPEC-J2 cells. However, when an inhibitor of ERK phosphorylation was added, TER did not promote the expression of TJ protein, denoting that the ERK signaling pathway mediates the upregulation of TJ proteins. Our data may propose the potential application of TER in treating IBD.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS)-dependent gene regulation in bacteria performs a vital role in synchronization of cell-density-dependent functions. In Chromobacterium violaceum QS-dependent cviI/R regulatory genes are activated during the mid- or late-exponential phase of growth. However, sufficient evidence is lacking on the role of QS inhibitors on gene regulation at different phases of growth. Hence, we report the role of linalool, a natural monoterpenoid on QS mediated gene regulation at different stages of growth in C. violaceum by performing biosensor, growth kinetic and gene expression studies. In vitro and in vivo studies were performed for establishing role of linalool in reducing the virulence and infection by using HEK-293 T cell lines and Caenorhabditis elegans models respectively. C. violaceum CV026 with C6-HSL was used as control. The results showed linalool to be a QS inhibitor with an estimated IC50 of 63 µg/mL for violacein inhibition. At this concentration the cell density difference (delta OD600) of 0.14 from the compound was observed indicating the quorum concentration. The expression of cviI/R was initiated at mid-log phase (~ 18 h) and reached the maximum at 36 h in control whereas in treatment it remained significantly downregulated at all time points. The expression of violacein biosynthetic genes vioA, vioC, vioD and vioE was also downregulated by linalool. Infection studies with linalool showed higher survival rates in HEK-293T cell lines and C. elegans compared to the infection control. Taken together, this study proves linalool to be a QS inhibitor capable of attenuation of QS by controlling the cell density through cviI/R downregulation at the early phase of growth and hence offering scope for its application for controlling infections.

Abstract
Mixed-species biofilms represent the most frequent actual lifestyles of microorganisms in food processing environments, and they are usually more resistant to control methods than single-species biofilms. The persistence of biofilms formed by foodborne pathogens is believed to cause serious human diseases. These challenges have encouraged researchers to search for novel, natural methods that are more effective towards mixed-species biofilms. Recently, the use of bacteriophages to control mixed-species biofilms have grown significantly in the food industry as an alternative to conventional methods. This review highlights a comprehensive introduction of mixed-species biofilms formed by foodborne pathogens and their enhanced resistance to anti-biofilm removal strategies. Additionally, several methods for controlling mixed-species biofilms briefly focused on applying bacteriophages in the food industry have also been discussed. This article concludes by suggesting that using bacteriophage, combined with other 'green' methods, could effectively control mixed-species biofilms in the food industry.

Abstract
Unregulated consumption and overexploitation of antibiotics have paved the way for emergence of antibiotic‐resistant strains and ‘superbugs’. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is among the opportunistic nosocomial pathogens causing devastating infections in clinical set‐ups globally. Its artillery equipped with diversified virulence elements, extensive antibiotic resistance and biofilms has made it a ‘hard‐to‐treat’ pathogen. The pathogenicity of P. aeruginosa is modulated by an intricate cell density‐dependent mechanism called quorum sensing (QS). The virulence artillery of P. aeruginosa is firmly controlled by QS genes, and their expression drives the aggressiveness of the infection. Attempts to identify and develop novel antimicrobials have seen a sharp rise in the past decade. Among different proposed mechanisms, a novel anti‐virulence approach to target pseudomonal infections by virtue of anti‐QS and anti‐biofilm drugs appears to occupy the centre stage. In this respect, bioactive phytochemicals have gained prominence among the scientific community owing to their significant quorum quenching (QQ) properties. Recent studies have shed light on the QQ activities of various phytochemicals and other drugs in perturbing the QS‐dependent virulence in P. aeruginosa. This review highlights the recent evidences that reinforce the application of plant bioactives for combating pseudomonal infections, their advantages and shortcomings in anti‐virulence therapy.

Abstract
Owing to their preservative and antimicrobial effects, postbiotics (metabolic byproducts of probiotics) are promising natural components for the food industry. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of postbiotics collected from isolated Lactobacillus curvatus B.67 and Lactobacillus plantarum M.2 against Listeria monocytogenes pathogens in planktonic cells, motility, and biofilm states. The analysis of the metabolite composition of the postbiotics revealed various organic acids, along with a few well-known bacteriocin-encoding genes with potential antimicrobial effects. Postbiotics maintained their residual antimicrobial activity over the pH range 1-6 but lost all activity at neutral pH (pH 7). Full antimicrobial activity (100%) was observed during heat treatment, even under the autoclaving condition.Minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) of L. curvatus B.67 and L. plantarum M.2 against L. monocytogenes were 80 and 70 mg/mL, respectively. However, four sub-MICs of the postbiotics (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 MIC) were tested for inhibition efficacy against L. monocytogenes during different experiment in this study. Swimming motility, biofilm formation, and expression levels of target genes related to biofilm formation, virulence, and quorum-sensing were significantly inhibited with increasing postbiotics concentration. Postbiotics from L. plantarum M.2 exhibited a higher inhibitory effect than the postbiotics from L. curvatus B.67. Nonetheless, both these postbiotics from Lactobacillus spp. could be used as effective bio-interventions for controlling L. monocytogenes biofilm in the food industry.

Injudicious consumption of antibiotics in the past few decades has arisen the problem of resistance in pathogenic organisms against most antibiotics and antimicrobial agents. Scenarios of treatment failure are becoming more common in hospitals. This situation demands the frequent need for new antimicrobial compounds which may have other mechanisms of action from those which are in current use. Limonene can be utilized as one of the solutions to the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Limonene is a naturally occurring monoterpene with a lemon-like odor, which mainly present in the peels of citrus plants like lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc. The study aimed to enlighten the antimicrobial properties of limonene as per previous literature. Advantageous contributions have been made by various research groups in the study of the antimicrobial properties of limonene. Previous studies have shown that limonene not only inhibits disease-causing pathogenic microbes, however, it also protects various food products from potential contaminants. This review article contains information about the effectiveness of limonene as an antimicrobial agent. Apart from antimicrobial property, some other uses of limonene are also discussed such as its role as fragrance and flavor additive, as in the formation of nonalcoholic beverages, as solvent and cleaner in the petroleum industry, and as a pesticide. Antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-biofilm properties of limonene may help it to be used in the future as a potential antimicrobial agent with minimal adverse effects. Some of the recent studies also showed the action of limonene against COVID-19 (Coronavirus). However, additional studies are requisite to scrutinize the possible mechanism of antimicrobial action of limonene.

Abstract
The management of insect pests and fungal diseases that cause damage to crops has become challenging due to the rise of pesticide and fungicide resistance. The recent developments in studies related to plant-derived essential oil products has led to the discovery of a range of phytochemicals with the potential to combat pesticide and fungicide resistance. This review paper summarizes and interprets the findings of experimental work based on plant-based essential oils in combination with existing pesticidal and fungicidal agents and novel bioactive natural and synthetic molecules against the insect pests and fungi responsible for the damage of crops. The insect mortality rate and fractional inhibitory concentration were used to evaluate the insecticidal and fungicidal activities of essential oil synergists against crop-associated pests. A number of studies have revealed that plant-derived essential oils are capable of enhancing the insect mortality rate and reducing the minimum inhibitory concentration of commercially available pesticides, fungicides and other bioactive molecules. Considering these facts, plant-derived essential oils represent a valuable and novel source of bioactive compounds with potent synergism to modulate crop-associated insect pests and phytopathogenic fungi.

Abstract
Cuminum cyminum L. (cumin) is valued for its aromatic and medicinal properties. There are several reports of antibacterial activity of C. cyminum essential oil (CcEO). Accordingly, the present study was conducted to investigate the mechanism(s) of action of the CcEO against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, 10 S. aureus MDR isolates, obtained from different sources, were selected based on the antibiotic susceptibility patterns and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute definition and subjected to the examinations. Our results exhibited promising bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties of the CcEO. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration values ranged from 5 to 10 and 10 to 20 μL ⋅ mL–1, respectively. Scanning electron microscope was used to assess the bacterial cell structure and morphology after the induction with 1/2 MIC concentration of the CcEO. The observed morphological changes appeared to be deformation of the cell membrane and destruction of the cells. In the case of quorum sensing inhibitory potential, treatment of S. aureus isolates with the sub-MIC concentrations (1/2 MIC) of the CcEO significantly reduced the hld expression (3.13-fold downregulation), which considerably controls S. aureus quorum-sensing accessory regulator system. Another virulence factor influenced by the CcEO was the polysaccharide intercellular adhesion production system, as an important component of cell–cell adhesion and biofilm formation. Consequently, the expression level of the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus in the S. aureus cells was examined following treatment with CcEO. The results showed significant decrease (−3.3-fold) in ica expression, indicating that the CcEO could potentially interfere with the process of biofilm formation. Using the ethidium bromide efflux inhibition assay, the S. aureus NorA efflux pump was phenotypically but not genotypically (in quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay) affected by the CcEO treatment. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, cuminic aldehyde (38.26%), α,β-dihydroxyethylbenzene (29.16%), 2-caren-10-al (11.20%), and γ-terpinene (6.49%) were the most detected compounds. The antibacterial and antivirulence action of the CcEO at sub-MIC concentrations means that no microbial resistance will be promoted and developed after the treatment with this agent. These findings revealed that the CcEO is a promising antibacterial agent to control infections caused by the MDR S. aureus strains.
