Trends in the Use of Lipases: A Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis

Scientific mapping using bibliometric data network analysis was applied to analyze research works related to lipases and their industrial applications, evaluating the current state of research, challenges, and opportunities in the use of these biocatalysts, based on the evaluation of a large number of publications on the topic, allowing a comprehensive systematic data analysis, which had not yet been conducted in relation to studies specifically covering lipases and their industrial applications. Thus, studies involving lipase enzymes published from 2018 to 2022 were accessed from the Web of Science database. The extracted records result in the analysis of terms of bibliographic compatibility among the articles, co-occurrence of keywords, and co-citation of journals using the VOSviewer algorithm in the construction of bibliometric maps. This systematic review analysis of 357 documents, including original and review articles, revealed studies inspired by lipase enzymes in the research period, showing that the development of research, together with different areas of knowledge, presents good results related to the applications of lipases, due to information synchronization. Furthermore, this review showed the main challenges in lipase applications regarding increased production and operational stability; establishing well-defined evaluation criteria, such as cultivation conditions, activity, biocatalyst stability, type of support and reactor; thermodynamic studies; reuse cycles; and it can assist in defining goals for the development of successful large-scale applications, showing several points for improvement of future studies on lipase enzymes.

Homoscleromorpha-derived Bacillus spp. as potential sources of biotechnologically-relevant hydrolases and biosurfactants

Despite hydrolytic exoenzymes and biosurfactants having been gradually reported from the poriferan microbiome, little is known about these bioproducts in microorganisms inhabiting Homoscleromorpha sponges. Here, we investigated the production of hydrolases and biosurfactants in bacteria isolated from three shallow-water homoscleromorph species, Oscarella sp., Plakina cyanorosea, and Plakina cabofriense. A total of 99 of 107 sponge-associated bacterial isolates exhibited activity for at least one of the analyzed hydrolases. Following fermentation in Luria-Bertani (LB) and Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB), two isolates, 80BH11 and 80B1:1010b, showed higher lipase and peptidase activities. Both of them belonged to the Bacillus genus and were isolated from Oscarella. Central composite design leveraged up the peptidase activity in 280% by Bacillus sp. 80BH11 in the TSB medium for 48 h at 30 °C. The optimized model also revealed that pH 6.5 and 45 °C were the best conditions for peptidase reaction. In addition, Bacillus sp. 80BH11 was able to release highly emulsifying and remarkably stable surfactants in the LB medium. Surfactin was finally elucidated as the biosurfactant generated by this sponge-derived Bacillus. In conclusion, we hope to have set the scenery for further prospecting of industrial enzymes and biosurfactants in Homoscleromorpha microbiomes.

Sodium Alginate–Gelatin Nanoformulations for Encapsulation of Bacillus velezensis and Their Use for Biological Control of Pistachio Gummosis

Biopolymer-based nanocomposites are favorable materials for the encapsulation of biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. In this research, sodium alginate, a widely used natural polymer, was extracted and purified from Macrocystis pyrifera. Its composition was confirmed using ¹H NMR and FTIR analyses, and its molecular weight and mannuronic acid/guluronic acid ratio were obtained. Sodium alginate–gelatin microcapsules enriched with carbon nanotubes and SiO₂ nanoparticles were prepared to encapsulate Bacillus velezensis, and the biological effects of this formulation on the control of pistachio gummosis and growth parameters were investigated. Microscopy examination showed that the microcapsules had quite globular shapes. XRD confirmed the occurrence of an electrostatic interaction when sodium alginate was blended with gelatin. The survival rate of the encapsulated bacteria was about 10⁷ CFU/mL and was maintained after one year of storage. The aim of this study was to achieve a unique formulation containing beneficial bacteria and nanoparticles for the synergistic control of Phytophthora drechsleri.

Microbial production of value-added bioproducts and enzymes from molasses, a by-product of sugar industry

Molasses is a major by-product of sugar industry and contains 40-60% (w/w) of sugars. The world's annual yield of molasses reaches 55 million tons. Traditionally, molasses is simply discharged or applied to feed production. Additionally, some low-cost and environmentally friendly bioprocesses have been established for microbial production of value-added bioproducts from molasses. Over the last decade and more, increasing numbers of biofuels, polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, organic acids, and enzymes have been produced from the molasses through microbial conversion that possess an array of important applications in the industries of food, energy, and pharmaceutical. For better application, it is necessary to comprehensively understand the research status of bioconversion of molasses that has not been elaborated in detail so far. In this review, these value-added bioproducts and enzymes obtained through bioconversion of molasses, their potential applications in food and other industries, as well as the future research focus were generalized and discussed.
