Development of a silver-based dual-function antimicrobial laundry additive and textile coating for the decontamination of healthcare laundry

Evaluation of Aging Effect on the Durability of Antibacterial Treatments Applied on Textile Materials for the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is always seeking novel solutions to improve the durability and the performance of textile materials used in vehicles. Indeed, especially after the coronavirus pandemic, antibacterial treatments have gained interest for their potential of ensuring cleanliness and safety toward microbial contamination within vehicles. This study gives a panoramic view of the durability of antibacterial treatments applied on textile materials in the automotive industry, focusing on their performance after experiencing accelerated aging processes. Two different textile materials, a fabric and a synthetic leather, both treated with antibacterial agents, were tested according to ISO 22196 and ISO 20743 standards, respectively, using two model microorganisms, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The impact of mechanical, thermal, and solar aging on the antibacterial properties has been evaluated. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed to investigate the surface morphology of the materials before and after aging. Furthermore, contact angle measurements were conducted. The results suggest that neither mechanical nor thermal aging processes determined diminished antibacterial action. It was determined, instead, that the most damaging stressor for both textile materials was UV aging, causing severe surface alterations and a reduction in antibacterial activity.

Antibacterial surfaces: Strategies and applications

Antibacterial surfaces are surfaces that can resist bacteria, relying on the nature of the material itself. It is significant for safe food and water, human health, and industrial equipment. Biofilm is the main form of bacterial contamination on the material surface. Preventing the formation of biofilm is an efficient way to develop antibacterial surfaces. The strategy for constructing the antibacterial surface is divided into bacteria repelling and bacteria killing based on the formation of the biofilm. Material surface wettability, adhesion, and steric hindrance determine bacteria repelling performance. Bacteria should be killed by surface chemistry or physical structures when they are attached to a material surface irreversibly. Killing approaches are usually in the light of the cell membrane of bacteria. This review summarizes the fabrication methods and applications of antibacterial surfaces from the view of the treatment of the material surfaces. We also present several crucial points for developing long-term stability, no drug resistance, broad-spectrum, and even programable antibacterial surfaces.

Investigation of the stability and risks of fomite transmission of human coronavirus OC43 on leather

Limited research exists on the potential for leather to act as a fomite of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or endemic coronaviruses including human coronavirus (HCoV) OC43; this is important for settings such as the shoe manufacturing industry. Antiviral coating of leather hides could limit such risks. This study aimed to investigate the stability and transfer of HCoVOC43 on different leathers, as a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2, and assess the antiviral efficacy of a silver-based leather coating. The stability of HCoV-OC43 (6.6 log₁₀) on patent, full-grain calf, corrected grain finished and nubuck leathers (silver additive-coated and uncoated) was measured by titration on BHK-21 cells. Transfer from leather to cardboard and stainless steel was determined. HCoV-OC43 was detectable for 6 h on patent, 24 h on finished leather and 48 h on calf leather; no infectious virus was recovered from nubuck. HCoV-OC43 transferred from patent, finished and calf leathers onto cardboard and stainless steel up to 2 h post-inoculation (≤3.1–5.5 log₁₀), suggesting that leathers could act as fomites. Silver additive-coated calf and finished leathers were antiviral against HCoV-OC43, with no infectious virus recovered after 2 h and limited transfer to other surfaces. The silver additive could reduce potential indirect transmission of HCoV-OC43 from leather.

Antibacterial Textile Based on Hydrolyzed Milk Casein

Antimicrobial textile structures are developed based on polypropylene (PP) and a natural material, hydrolyzed casein. The casein, from bovine milk, is subjected to acid hydrolysis in aqueous media, then blended into the PP matrix in the melt phase by extrusion. The obtained blend, containing 5 wt.% of hydrolyzed casein, is then processed by a melt spinning process to get multifilaments, leading to the production knitting structures. Thanks to the addition of the hydrolyzed casein, the obtained textile showed a strong antibacterial activity towards both Gram (+) and Gram (−) bacterial strains. The addition of 5 wt.% hydrolyzed casein does not significantly impact the mechanical properties of PP in the dumbbells form, but a small decrease was observed in the tenacity of the filaments. No moisture retention was observed after the addition of hydrolyzed casein, but the rheological behavior was slightly affected. The obtained results can contribute to addressing concerns regarding nonrenewable antibacterial agents used in textile materials, particularly their effects on the environment and human health, by offering antibacterial agents from a biobased and edible substance with high efficiency. They are also promising to respond to issues of wasting dairy products and recycling them, in addition to the advantages of using melt processes.
