College Students' Employability, Cognition, and Demands for ChatGPT in the AI Era Among Chinese Nursing Students: Web-Based Survey

BACKGROUND

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the widespread use of ChatGPT, nursing students' artificial intelligence quotient (AIQ), employability, cognition, and demand for ChatGPT are worthy of attention.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate Chinese nursing students' AIQ and employability status as well as their cognition and demand for the latest AI tool-ChatGPT. This study was conducted to guide future initiatives in nursing intelligence education and to improve the employability of nursing students.

METHODS

We used a cross-sectional survey to understand nursing college students' AIQ, employability, cognition, and demand for ChatGPT. Using correlation analysis and multiple hierarchical regression analysis, we explored the relevant factors in the employability of nursing college students.

RESULTS

In this study, out of 1788 students, 1453 (81.30%) had not used ChatGPT, and 1170 (65.40%) had never heard of ChatGPT before this survey. College students' employability scores were positively correlated with AIQ, self-regulation ability, and their home location and negatively correlated with school level. Additionally, men scored higher on college students' employability compared to women. Furthermore, 76.5% of the variance was explained by the multiple hierarchical regression model for predicting college students' employability scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Chinese nursing students have limited familiarity and experience with ChatGPT, while their AIQ remains intermediate. Thus, educators should pay more attention to cultivating nursing students' AIQ and self-regulation ability to enhance their employability. Employability, especially for female students, those from rural backgrounds, and students in key colleges, deserves more attention in future educational efforts.

Nursing informatics skills relevance and competence for final year nursing students

BACKGROUND

 The increasing use of technology in nursing practice requires nursing students to be competent in nursing informatics with an attitude of acceptance of technology in the healthcare environment.

OBJECTIVES

 The objectives of the study were to determine final year nursing students' perceptions and skills in nursing informatics and their attitudes towards computerisation in nursing practice.

METHOD

 The study population were 198 final year nursing students from a selected university in the Western Cape, South Africa. All-inclusive sampling was used. A descriptive survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire which included two validated scales, namely the validated Nursing Informatics Competency Assessment Tool (NICAT) and the Nurses' Attitudes towards Computerisation scale. Means and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the ratings of the perceived relevance of nursing informatics skills in nursing practice, perceived levels of competence in nursing informatics skills and attitudes towards computers were calculated.

RESULTS

 A total of 91 undergraduate respondents completed the survey. Computer literacy skills were rated overall as most relevant (4.23, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 4.06-4.40) and the skills perceived most competent (4.16, 95% CI: 3.81-4.22). The respondents had an overall positive score for attitudes towards computerisation in healthcare (67.34, s.d. = 10.40, 95% CI: 65.18-69.51).

CONCLUSION

 The study concluded that computer literacy skills, informatics literacy skills and information management skills were relevant to nursing practice, despite varying levels of competence in these skills among nurses.Contribution: What key insights into the research results and its future function are revealed? Measuring the Interactions Between Health Demand, Informatics Supply, and Technological Applications in Digital Medical Innovation for China: Content Mapping and Analysis

BACKGROUND

There were 2 major incentives introduced by the Chinese government to promote medical informatics in 2009 and 2016. As new drugs are the major source of medical innovation, informatics-related concepts and techniques are a major source of digital medical innovation. However, it is unclear whether the research efforts of medical informatics in China have met the health needs, such as disease management and population health.

OBJECTIVE

We proposed an approach to mapping the interplay between different knowledge entities by using the tree structure of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to gain insights into the interactions between informatics supply, health demand, and technological applications in digital medical innovation in China.

METHODS

All terms under the MeSH tree parent node "Diseases [C]" or node "Health [N01.400]" or "Public Health [N06.850]" were labelled as H. All terms under the node "Information Science [L]" were labelled as I, and all terms under node "Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques, and Equipment [E]" were labelled as T. The H-I-T interactions can be measured by using their co-occurrences in a given publication.

RESULTS

The H-I-T interactions in China are showing significant growth and a more concentrated interplay were observed. Computing methodologies, informatics, and communications media (such as social media and the internet) constitute the majority of I-related concepts and techniques used for resolving the health promotion and diseases management problems in China. Generally there is a positive correlation between the burden and informatics research efforts for diseases in China. We think it is not contradictory that informatics research should be focused on the greatest burden of diseases or where it can have the most impact. Artificial intelligence is a competing field of medical informatics research in China, with a notable focus on diagnostic deep learning algorithms for medical imaging.

CONCLUSIONS

It is suggested that technological transfers, namely the functionality to be realized by medical/health informatics (eg, diagnosis, therapeutics, surgical procedures, laboratory testing techniques, and equipment and supplies) should be strengthened. Research on natural language processing and electronic health records should also be strengthened to improve the real-world applications of health information technologies and big data in the future.

A Systems-Level Method for Developing Nursing Informatics Solutions: The Role of Executive Leadership

Nursing leadership can play an essential role in the development of nursing informatics solutions by virtue of their broad understanding and oversight of nursing care. We describe a systems-level method for creating nursing informatics solutions with clearly defined structure and leadership from nursing executives. Based on the guiding principles of clear lines of responsibility, respect for expertise, and commitment to project aims, this allows nursing executive leadership to organize, set up, and own the development of nursing informatics solutions.

How do nurses and midwives perceive their preparedness for quality improvement and patient safety in practice? A cross-sectional national study in Ireland

BACKGROUND

Although patient safety and quality are cornerstones of healthcare practice, evidence is limited of the knowledge, skills and competence of practicing nurses and midwives in Ireland.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the perceptions of nurses and midwives regarding their continuing professional development-based preparedness for, and participation in quality and safety in the clinical setting.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional survey was undertaken across the Republic of Ireland in 2016 examining nurses and midwives' perceptions of their knowledge and skills in quality and safety methods and tools, their views of competence in this field using the domains from the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework (person-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics), and their participation in practice related to their access to quality and safety data.

SETTINGS

12 Health Service Executive (HSE) Centers of Nursing and Midwifery Education (CNMEs) in Ireland PARTICIPANTS: Practicing nurses and midwives (n = 654) working in acute hospitals and community healthcare organizations who were undertaking continuing professional development (CPD) education at the time of data collection (March-April 2016).

METHODS

Survey methodology. 1787 surveys were distributed. Data were analyzed by IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.

RESULTS

A response rate of 37% (n = 654/1787) was achieved. While respondents were highly trained academically, many reported a lack of confidence in quality and safety methods and tools and QSEN competencies. Frontline staff nurses and midwives reported they were less prepared than their mid and senior level colleagues. Significant numbers indicated they were not engaged in quality and safety in practice.

CONCLUSIONS

This first nationwide study in Ireland has discovered that nurses and midwives perceive gaps in their preparedness to engage in quality improvement and patient safety in practice. To safeguard patient care, priority should be given to ensuring front-line staff are appropriately educated, have access to data, and time to competently participate in the continuous improvement of patient care.

The content and meaning of administrative work: a qualitative study of nursing practices

AIM

To investigate the content and meaning of nurses' administrative work.

BACKGROUND

Nurses often report that administrative work keeps them away from bedside care. The content and meaning of this work remains insufficiently explored.

DESIGN

Comparative case studies.

METHOD

The investigation took place in 2014. It was based on 254 hours of observations and 27 interviews with nurses and staff in two contrasting units: intensive care and long-term care. A time and motion study was also performed over a period of 96 hours.

RESULTS

Documentation and Organizational Activities is composed of six categories; documenting the patient record, coordination, management of patient flow, transmission of information, reporting quality indicators, ordering supplies- stock management Equal amounts of time were spent on these activities in each case. Nurses did not express complaints about documentation in intensive care, whereas they reported feeling frustrated by it in long-term care. These differences reflected the extent to which these activities could be integrated into nurses' clinical work and this is in turn was related to several factors: staff ratios, informatics, and relevance to nursing work.

CONCLUSION

Documentation and Organizational Activities are a main component of care. The meaning nurses attribute to them is dependent on organizational context. These activities are often perceived as competing with bedside care, but this does not have to be the case. The challenge for managers is to fully integrate them into nursing practice. Results also suggest that nurses' Documentation and Organizational Activities should be incorporated into informatics strategies.
