Abstract
OBJECTIVE To address the gap in effective nursing training for quality management, this study aims to implement and assess a nursing training program based on the Holton Learning Transfer System Inventory, utilizing action research to enhance the practicality and effectiveness of training outcomes. METHODS The study involved the formation of a dedicated training team, with program development informed by an extensive situation analysis and literature review. Key focus areas included motivation to transfer, learning environment, and transfer design. The program was implemented in a structured four-step process: plan, action, observation, reflection. RESULTS Over a 11-month period, 22 nurses completed 14 h of theoretical training and 18 h of practical training with a 100% attendance rate and 97.75% satisfaction rate. The nursing team successfully led and completed 22 quality improvement projects, attaining a practical level of application. Quality management implementation difficulties, literature review, current situation analysis, cause analysis, formulation of plans, implementation plans, and report writing showed significant improvement and statistical significance after training. CONCLUSION The study confirms the efficacy of action research guided by Holton's model in significantly enhancing the capabilities of nursing staff in executing quality improvement projects, thereby improving the overall quality of nursing training. Future research should focus on refining the training program through long-term observation, developing a multidimensional evaluation index system, exploring training experiences qualitatively, and investigating the personality characteristics of nurses to enhance training transfer effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-management plays an important role in the disease management of glaucoma patients. The effectiveness of the program can be improved by assessing the patient's perspective and needs to tailor self-management support. Most studies have focused on assessing one of these self-management behaviours, such as medication adherence, and there is a lack of systematic assessment of the support needs and challenges of self-management for patients with glaucoma. Therefore, in this study, we conducted an in-depth investigation into the self-management challenges and support needs of patients with primary glaucoma, providing a basis for nursing staff to implement self-management support. METHOD The phenomenological method and semistructured interviews were used in this study. A total of 20 patients with primary glaucoma were recruited between June and December 2022. Colaizzi's analysis method was used to analyse the interview data. RESULTS Challenges for patients include becoming an expert in glaucoma, managing negative emotions, adapting to daily life changes and resuming social activities. To address these challenges, four themes of patient self-management support needs were identified: (1) health information support, (2) social support, (3) psychological support, and (4) daily living support. CONCLUSION Patients with primary glaucoma experience varying degrees of challenge in dealing with medical, emotional, and social aspects. Comprehending the support needs of patients, healthcare professionals should deliver targeted, personalized and comprehensive self-management interventions to enhance their capacity of patients to perform self-management and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE People living with stroke and neurological conditions access rehabilitation at different times but self-management is often viewed as what happens post-discharge. Personalised models that integrate self-management support within everyday care are now advocated but this may require practitioners to change their behaviour to adopt and sustain new ways of working. The People1st project evaluated integration of an existing Supported Self-Management programme ("Bridges") across varied stroke and neurorehabilitation service contexts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mixed-method evaluation of training for groups of healthcare practitioners across 24 UK National Health Service (NHS) Trusts, exploring how learning from Bridges was assimilated and enacted in practice, on an individual and collective basis. RESULTS Staff growth in confidence and skill around supported self-management was demonstrated. Transformations to practice included changes to: the structure of, and language used in, patient interactions; induction/training processes to increase potential for sustainability; and sharing of successes. Bridges helped practitioners make changes that brought them closer to their professional ideals. Engaged leadership was considered important for successful integration. CONCLUSIONS Bridges was successfully integrated within a wide range of stroke and neurorehabilitation service contexts, enabled by an approach in line with practitioners' values-based motivations. Further work is required to explore sustainability and impact on service users. Implications for rehabilitationPersonalised models of care and support for self-management are advocated for people living with stroke and neurological conditions; this requires practitioners to be supported to change behaviour and practices to adopt and sustain new ways of working.Staff from a wide variety of backgrounds in neurorehabilitation and stroke can learn collaboratively about self-management practices via the Bridges programme and can integrate those practices into their service contexts.Bridges can take practitioners closer to their professional ideals of caring and making a difference and empowers them to initiate change.Organisational commitment and engaged leadership are required to facilitate a culture of support for self-management in practice.

Abstract
Background: Cancer patients and their families play a central role in the self-management of the medical, emotional, and lifestyle consequences of cancer. Nurses with training in self-management support can enable cancer patients to better manage the effects of cancer and treatment. Methods: As part of a randomized controlled trial, we developed a training program to build nurses’ confidence in the provision of self-management support (SMS). The SMS skills taught were adapted from the Stanford Peer Support training programs and embedded within the 5As (Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist, and Arrange) behavioral counseling process. We evaluated the impact of the training program on oncology nurses’ and coaches’ confidence using a Student’s t-test for paired samples in a nonrandomized, one-group pre/postsurvey. Results: Participants were experienced oncology nurses from three participating cancer centers. A two-tailed Student’s t-test for paired samples showed a significant improvement in nurses’ confidence for the 15 SMS microskills targeted in the training between the pretest and post-test as follows: for Center 1, a mean difference of 0.79 (t = 7.18, p ≤ 0.00001); for Center 2, a mean difference of 0.73 (t = 8.4, p ≤ 0.00001); for Center 3, a mean difference of 1.57 (t = 11.45, p ≤ 0.00001); and for coaches, a mean difference of 0.52 (t = 7.6, p ≤ 0.00001). Conclusions: Our training program improved oncology staff nurses’ and cancer coaches’ confidence in 15 SMS microskills and has potential for SMS training of nurses in routine care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients' self-management of the implications of their disease(s) is becoming increasingly important. Research shows that hospitalization disrupts established self-management routines. Nurses can play an important role in supporting patients' self-management. The aim of this study is to describe how nurses support the self-management of hospitalized patients through verbal communication during routine nursing care. METHODS A qualitative descriptive study, using overt, non-participant observations was conducted on three wards of a general teaching hospital in the Netherlands. A total of 215 hours of nursing work during 49 shifts was observed. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis based on the six phases of Braun and Clarke. RESULTS Our observations showed that nurses discuss patients' self-management mainly in short conversations during the care provision. Nurses ask patients about their self-management at home and stimulate patients to express their opinions and to be involved in the care process. Three themes reflect how nurses support self-management: 'Discussing patient's self-management', 'Enhancing patient's involvement in care' and 'Focusing on patient's perspective'. CONCLUSION Hospital nurses have methods to support hospitalized patients' self-management but it does not seem to be an integral part of daily practice. Given current developments in healthcare, it is reasonable to argue that self-management should be given greater emphasis within the hospital setting, requiring a collaborative approach with patients and other healthcare professionals across the care continuum.

Abstract
PURPOSE To qualitatively explore the consequences of soft tissue sarcoma and its treatment experienced by survivors, the self-management strategies they use to deal with these consequences, and any factors that may act as barriers or facilitators to their self-management. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven soft tissue sarcoma survivors who had completed their primary treatment. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. RESULTS Physical, psychological and social consequences of soft tissue sarcoma and its treatment were identified, with side-effects, physical restrictions, body image issues, fear of recurrence, feeling depressed, familial relationships and sexual activity being the most frequently reported. Nine different types of self-management strategy encompassing eighteen specific strategies were identified, including cognitive strategies, lifestyle changes and utilisation of resources. Personal, social and environmental facilitators of self-management were identified; being in a relationship, being at an appropriate life stage, and having support from family, friends and medical staff were most commonly reported. Finally, personal and environmental barriers to self-management included the adaptation period, ongoing complications, rareness of sarcoma and poor patient-healthcare provider communication. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that soft tissue sarcoma survivors, especially those who are younger and experience physical limitations, may find the immediate post-treatment period particularly challenging and may benefit from nurse-led self-management support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The growing prevalence of chronic illnesses requires nurses to support self-management and help patients integrate the chronic illness into their life. To our knowledge there are currently no training programs that combine the necessary components to adequately enhance nurses' competencies in self-management support. OBJECTIVE The systematic development and validation of a need-supportive training in self-management support for nurses. DESIGN A three-phased study, according to van Meijel et al. (2004), with collection of building blocks, design, and validation of the need-supportive character of the training. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Eight training groups with 30 nurses, 34 nursing students and nine social healthcare workers from different nursing colleges in Flanders, Belgium. METHODS In phase one a literature review, current practice analysis, and problem and needs analysis were performed. In phase two, the INTENSS training intervention was developed, framed within the Self-Determination Theory and the 5A's-Model. The training consisted of a basic training module and a video-interaction guidance module. The intervention was subsequently tested in eight training groups (N = 73). Participants provided feedback during focus group discussions. The intervention was cyclically adapted to trainees' experiences and suggestions. In phase three, we evaluated the need-supportive character of the training intervention. RESULTS Phase one indicated the need for training, since nurses' application of self-management support was limited and practiced from a narrow medical point of view. In phase two we developed a theory-driven and multifaceted training, building on attitude, knowledge, skills and reflection in the training. The training was framed within the Self-Determination Theory both at the didactical level as well as on content and format. Overall, participants appreciated the building blocks of the training as supporting their basic needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence. CONCLUSIONS INTENSS, a multifaceted need-supportive training in self-management support was developed, successfully taking into account participants' needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Professionals in child healthcare increasingly endorse the support of self-management in paediatric rehabilitation services for children with physical disability. Less understood though are their views regarding the role of the children's parents, as well as their own role in supporting parents. This study aimed to investigate the motivation of rehabilitation professionals to support self-management of parents regarding their child with physical disability, professionals' beliefs about parental self-management, and the perceptions underlying their motivation. METHODS A mixed-methods strategy was followed using a survey among rehabilitation professionals (n = 175) and consecutive semi-structured interviews (n = 16). Associations between autonomous (intrinsic) versus controlled (extrinsic) motivation and beliefs on parental self-management were tested. For deeper understanding of their motivation, directed content analysis was used to address key themes in the qualitative data extracts. RESULTS Professionals reported autonomous motivation for parental self-management support more often than controlled motivation (t[174] = 29.95, p < .001). Autonomous motivation was associated with the beliefs about the importance of parental self-management (r = .29, p < .001). Approximately 90% of the professionals believed that parents should have an active role, though less than 10% considered it important that parents also are independent actors and initiative takers in the rehabilitation process. Interviews revealed that individual professionals struggled with striking a balance between keeping control and 'giving away responsibility' to parents. A 'professional-like' attitude was expected of parents with 'involvement' and 'commitment' as essential preconditions. Furthermore, professionals expressed the need for additional coaching skills to support parental self-management. CONCLUSION Professionals were predominantly autonomously motivated to support self-management of parents. However, the dilemmas in giving or taking responsibilities within the partnership with parents may limit their effectiveness in empowering parents. Reflection on the potential gaps between professionals' motivation, beliefs and actual behaviour might be crucial to support parental self-management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-management support is considered an important task for nurses working in chronic care provision. The complex nature of self-management support makes it necessary to clarify the factors affecting the behaviour of nurses in supporting patients living with chronic illnesses. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to synthesize the factors influencing the provision of self-management support as perceived by nurses in the care for patients living with a chronic illness. DESIGN A systematic mixed studies review. DATA SOURCE Studies published in English from 1999 to April 2020 were extracted from five databases: CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, and Web of Science. REVIEW METHOD The selection process was guided by PICo (Population, phenomenon of Interest, and Context). Studies that highlighted factors associated with the provision of self-management support among nurses, within the context of the top four non-communicable chronic diseases, were included. The risk of bias was carefully assessed. Using data-based convergent synthesis, the identified factors were synthesized and tabulated. The clusters of factors organized under each theme were approved by all researchers in discussion meetings. RESULTS In total, sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria; out of these, seven were qualitative, seven quantitative, and two mixed methods studies. The review identified nurses' perspectives regarding factors influencing self-management support at the patient, nurse, care relationship, education and training, organization and healthcare system, and intra- and inter-professional levels. The review provided evidence that these factors are interdependent in nature. CONCLUSION This review proposed considering a framework of interdependent factors influencing self-management support. It highlighted the need to come up with a comprehensive definition of self-management support that takes into account the emotional aspect as well as patient-as-partner approach. The proposed framework can be useful in tailoring multi-faceted interventions to strengthen nurses' supportive role in self-management of chronic care. Future studies should focus on exploring contextually relevant factors impacting nurses' supportive role in self-management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide overview of research on training interventions for healthcare providers aimed at promoting competencies in delivering group-based patient education. METHODS A systematic literature search identified relevant studies. Data was extracted on training details, study design, outcomes and experiences. Results were summarized and qualitative data analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Twenty-seven studies exploring various training interventions were included. Ten studies used qualitative methods, eight quantitative and nine mixed methods. Use of a comparison group, validated instruments and follow-up measures was rare. Healthcare providers' reactions to training were mostly positive. Several studies indicated positive short-term effects on self-efficacy and knowledge. Results on observed skills and patient outcomes were inconclusive. Results on healthcare providers' experience of delivery of group-based patient education following training were categorized into 1) Benefits of training interventions, 2) Barriers to implementation and 3) Delivery support. CONCLUSIONS Further evaluation of training for healthcare providers delivering group-based patient education is needed before conclusions on training efficacy can be drawn. The results indicate an expanding research field still in maturation. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Efficacy studies evaluating theoretically grounded training with clear attention on group facilitation and follow-up support are needed. Inclusion of validated instruments and long-term outcomes is encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The burden of chronic disease on healthcare services worldwide continues to grow, and the increased development of educational interventions which help patients to better manage their own condition is evident internationally. OBJECTIVES This paper reports on findings of an updated review of Cochrane systematic reviews of interventions designed to improve patients' knowledge and skills to manage chronic disease, with particular reference to nursing contribution and practice. METHODS A broad search strategy was used to search the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews to identify reviews of patient education, self-management, and self-care studies. Two reviewers independently assessed eligibility for inclusion and extracted data from the reviews. FINDINGS From a total of 882 reviews, 63 met the inclusion criteria, and 900 studies were identified. Most (68%, n = 43) of the 63 reviews were judged by Cochrane reviewers to provide inadequate evidence of the effectiveness of the interventions reviewed. Information on the profession of the person delivering the intervention was often not available, although 78% (n = 49) of reviews mentioned that nurses were involved in a proportion of studies delivering interventions either independently or as part of a multi-professional team. CONCLUSION Educational programmes have definite benefits for patients suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and stroke, and are promising in areas such as diabetes, epilepsy, cancer care, and mental health. However, it still is not clear what the active ingredients of many successful interventions are. Further research is needed to establish the impact of technology on programme delivery, and to develop programmes tailored for patients with multiple health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Descriptions of training intervention in healthcare include a lot of vagueness, leaving the reader in doubt about the intervention and the true value of the reported effects. A set of reporting criteria to improve the transparency and comprehensiveness in reporting training interventions in healthcare is recommended. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop and content validate a set of reporting criteria for the development and evaluation of training interventions for healthcare professionals. METHOD The set of criteria was developed along three stages: (1) a literature review, (2) the design of the criteria, and (3) a Delphi and consensus meeting process with ten experts from different professional disciplines. RESULTS The Criteria for Reporting on Development and Evaluation of Professional Training interventions in Healthcare (CRe-DEPTH) set was systematically developed and consisted of 12 items representing four categories: (1) development of the training, (2) characteristics of the training, (3) characteristics of the providers, and (4) assessment of the training outcomes. Each item has a detailed description to support its unambiguous interpretation. CONCLUSIONS The developed CRe-DEPTH reporting criteria guide high quality development, evaluation and reporting for complex training interventions, while preserving the flexibility to incorporate various teaching content or teaching methods. The Cre-DEPTH criteria will allow for detailed reporting on the training, its developmental process, as well as on the rationale for underlying choices, and will avoid non-reporting of training details.

Abstract
CONTEXT Accompanying the growing expectation of patient self-management is the need to ensure health care professionals (HCPs) have the required attitudes and skills to provide effective self-management support (SMS). Results from existing training interventions for HCPs in SMS have been mixed and the evidence base is weaker for certain settings, including supporting people with progressive neurological conditions (PNCs). We set out to understand how training operates, and to identify barriers and facilitators to training designed to support shifts in attitudes amongst HCPs. METHODS We undertook a realist literature synthesis focused on: (i) the influence of how HCPs, teams and organisations view and adopt self-management; and (ii) how SMS needs to be tailored for people with PNCs. A traditional database search strategy was used alongside citation tracking, grey literature searching and stakeholder recommendations. We supplemented PNC-specific literature with data from other long-term conditions. Key informant interviews and stakeholder advisory group meetings informed the synthesis process. Realist context-mechanism-outcome configurations were generated and mapped onto the stages described in Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory. RESULTS Forty-four original articles were included (19 relating to PNCs), from which seven refined theories were developed. The theories identified important training elements (evidence provision, building skills and confidence, facilitating reflection and generating empathy). The significant influence of workplace factors as possible barriers or facilitators was highlighted. Embracing SMS often required challenging traditional professional role boundaries. CONCLUSION The integration of SMS into routine care is not an automatic outcome from training. A transformative learning process is often required to trigger the necessary mindset shift. Training should focus on how individual HCPs define and value SMS and how their work context (patient group and organisational constraints) influences this process. Proactively addressing potential contextual barriers may facilitate implementation. These findings could be applied to other types of training designed to shift attitudes amongst HCPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore nurses' self-perceived behavior of supporting patients' self-management, and its association with person-related and socio-structural factors. METHODS Correlational study in a sample of nurses from nine general hospitals, three community healthcare organizations, and six private community practices. Nurses with >50% of their patients living with a chronic condition were eligible to participate. Data were collected at two time-points. Self-management support behavior was measured by the SEPSS-36 instrument. The person-related and socio-structural associated factors were derived from behavioral theories and measured by validated questionnaires. RESULTS Nurses (N=477) scored overall low on self-management support behavior. Nurses lacked mainly competencies in collaborative goalsetting, shared decision making and organizing follow-up. Factors predicting nurses' behavior in supporting patients' self-management were self-efficacy, priority, perceived supervisor support and training in self-management support. This model explained 51.7% of the variance in nurses' behavior. CONCLUSION To date, nurses do not optimally fulfil their role in supporting patients' self-management. Self-management support is practiced from a narrow medical point of view and primarily consists of informing patients, which is the lowest level of patient participation. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS It is essential to better prepare and support nurses - and by extend all healthcare professionals - for the challenges of supporting patients' self-management.
