An Overview of Trichobacteriosis (Trichomycosis): An Underdiagnosed Disease

Trichobacteriosis (trichomycosis) is an asymptomatic infection at the axillary hair level caused by a bacterium of Corynebacterium spp. The aim of this study is to identify the clinical, epidemiological, and microbiological characteristics of previously reported cases. A review was conducted including the cases of trichomycosis (trichobacteriosis) reported in the PubMed database up to June 2023. Twenty-nine articles were included, involving 365 patients in total. A higher incidence was observed in men, representing 94% of the cases, most of which were in the age range of 20-50 years. The most frequently affected clinical topography was the axillar (90% of the cases). Most of the patients presented change in hair texture and bromhidrosis, some other frequent clinical manifestations were hyperhidrosis, hair color change, and cromhidrosis; 6% of the patients were asymptomatic. The etiological agent most frequently identified was Corynebacterium spp., the flavescens variety being the most prevalent. The most common form of treatment was shaving and topical clindamycin. In conclusion, trichobacteriosis is an infection that most frequently affects men at the axillary level; it manifests clinically with few symptoms and usually has a good response to treatment.

Dermoscopy of Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal Skin Infections: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Over the last three decades, the use of dermoscopy has been extended to inflammatory and infectious dermatoses. Regarding the latter, while the first applications concerned skin parasitoses, there has been a significant increase in the publication trend regarding nonparasitic dermatoses over recent years, yet data on this topic are sparse and often lack a standardized analytical approach. This systematic literature review summarizes published data on dermoscopy of bacterial, viral, and fungal dermatoses (dermoscopic findings, used setting, pathological correlation, and level of evidence of studies) and provides a homogeneous terminology of reported dermoscopic features according to a standardized methodology. A total of 152 papers addressing 43 different dermatoses and describing 184 different dermoscopic findings were included in the analysis. The majority of them displayed a level of evidence of V (107 single case reports and 40 case series), with only 5 studies showing a level of evidence of IV (case-control studies). Moreover, our analysis also underlined a high variability in the terminology used in published articles (even for the same dermatosis). Therefore, despite significant potential, future studies designed according to a systematic and standardized approach are required for a better characterization of dermoscopy of nonparasitic skin infections.

Dermoscopy of skin infestations and infections (entomodermoscopy) - Part I: dermatozoonoses and bacterial infections

Dermoscopy is an essential in vivo diagnostic technique in the clinical evaluation of skin tumors. Currently, the same can also be said about its implications when approaching different clinical situations in Dermatology. A growing number of reports on dermatological scenarios and diseases have been published, in which dermoscopy has been of great diagnostic help. The term "entomodermoscopy" was coined to describe dermoscopic findings in skin infestations and also in dermatoses of infectious etiology. In part I of this article, the main dermoscopic descriptions of zoodermatoses and bacterial infections will be addressed. In many of them, such as scabies, pediculosis, myiasis, and tungiasis, it is possible to identify the pathogen and, consequently, attain the diagnosis more quickly and use the technique to follow-up therapeutic effectiveness. In other situations that will be described, dermoscopy can allow the observation of clinical findings with greater detail, rule out differential diagnoses, and increase the level of confidence in a clinical suspicion.

Relevance of Dermabacter hominis isolated from clinical samples, 2012-2016: a retrospective case series

We investigated the clinical relevance of Dermabacter hominis isolated from samples of 108 patients. Polymicrobial growth was evident in 88% of specimens. Isolation of D. hominis was of definitive or possible significance in only 14% of patients. Vancomycin remains the drug of choice given a penicillin resistance rate of 84%.

The first case of hand infection caused by Dermabacter jinjuensis in a symmetrical peripheral gangrene patient

Introduction

Strains of the genus Dermabacter is a recently established species, recognized as relatively rare opportunistic human pathogen, and is infrequently isolated from clinical specimens, including blood cultures, abscesses, wounds, bone, eye, and skin.

Presentation of case

We present a 78-year old female with chronic symmetrical peripheral gangrene and hand infection. The patient underwent surgical debridement with amputation on gangrene with infection of both fingers. At 2 weeks postoperatively, pus discharge was newly observed and the patient underwent reoperation. In the subsequent reinfection, unknown organism has been repeatedly identified, may be the most likely causative agent. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic distinctness and DNA–DNA hybridization results, new strain should be placed in the genus Dermabacter as representing a novel species, for which the name Dermabacter jinjuensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Discussion

We judged the novel species as the causative bacteria. Because of, a novel species called D. jinjuensis was repeatedly identified more than common bacteria. It can be considered as a postoperative nosocomial infection or opportunistic infection. It is not clear how the infection of D. jinjensis occurred.

Conclusion

This is the first reported case of a human D. jinjuensis infection. We were able to treat patients without any complications by operative treatment and administering appropriate antimicrobial agents according to antibiotics susceptibility test.
