Discrete and morphometric traits reveal contrasting patterns and processes in the macroevolutionary history of a clade of scorpions

Sample Size and Geometric Morphometrics Methodology Impact the Evaluation of Morphological Variation

Geometric morphometrics has had a profound impact on our understanding of morphological evolution. However, factors such as sample size and the views and elements selected for two-dimensional geometric morphometric (2DGM) analyses, which are often dictated by specimen availability and time rather than study design, may affect the outcomes of those analyses. Leveraging large intraspecific sample sizes (n > 70) for two bat species, Lasiurus borealis and Nycticeius humeralis, we evaluate the impact of sample size on calculations of mean shape, shape variance, and centroid size. Additionally, we assessed the concordance of multiple skull 2D views with one another and characterized morphological variation in skull shape in L. borealis and N. humeralis, as well as a closely related species, Lasiurus seminolus. Given that L. seminolus is a morphologically cryptic species with L. borealis, we assessed whether differences in skull shape and in 2DGM approach would allow species discrimination. We found that reducing sample size impacted mean shape and increased shape variance, that shape differences were not consistent across views or skull elements, and that trends shown by the views and elements were not all strongly associated with one another. Further, we found that L. borealis and L. seminolus were statistically different in shape using 2DGM in all views and elements. These results underscore the importance of selecting appropriate sample sizes, 2D views, and elements based on the hypothesis being tested. While there is likely not a generalizable sample size or 2D view that can be employed given the wide variety of research questions and systems evaluated using 2DGM, a generalizable solution to issues with 2DGM presented here is to run preliminary analyses using multiple views, elements, and sample sizes, thus ensuring robust conclusions.

Exploring adaptive landscapes across deep time: A case study using echinoid body size

Adaptive landscapes are a common way of conceptualizing the phenotypic evolution of lineages across deep time. Although multiple approaches exist to implement this concept into operational models of trait evolution, inferring adaptive landscapes from comparative datasets remains challenging. Here, I explore the macroevolutionary dynamics of echinoid body size using data from over 5000 specimens and a phylogenetic framework incorporating a dense fossil sampling and spanning approximately 270 million years. Furthermore, I implement a novel approach of exploring alternative parameterizations of adaptive landscapes that succeeds in finding simpler, yet better-fitting models. Echinoid body size has been constrained to evolve within a single adaptive optimum for much of the clade's history. However, most of the morphological disparity of echinoids was generated by multiple regime shifts that drove the repeated evolution of miniaturized and gigantic forms. Events of body size innovation occurred predominantly in the Late Cretaceous and were followed by a drastic slowdown following the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. The discovery of these patterns is contingent upon directly sampling fossil taxa. The macroevolution of echinoid body size is therefore characterized by a late increase in disparity (likely linked to an expansion of ecospace), generated by active processes driving lineages toward extreme morphologies.

Contrasting patterns at interspecific and intraspecific levels in scorpion body size across a climatic gradient from rainforest to dryland vegetation

Body size is believed to be one of the most fundamental functional traits in animals and is evolutionarily conserved in order to guarantee the survival of the species. Besides the phylogenetic backgrounds, body size patterns might be a product of environmental filters, especially within fine taxonomic levels (i.e., within species or geographical lineages). Here, we evaluated the responses of scorpion body size at different organizational levels (inter and intraspecific) along a dry-wet climatic gradient in Brazilian forests. Scorpions were collected from 20 localities in northeastern Brazil, covering 12 sites of dry forests and eight sites in rainforest environments. As a proxy for body size, we measured the carapace length of 368 adult scorpions belonging to 11 species and applied linear mixed-effects models to investigate the potential effects of climatic features and geographical tendencies in this trait at inter- and intraspecific levels. Our findings suggest the existence of a longitudinal pattern of body size in scorpions with species becoming larger in an east-west direction (i.e., towards the continent); such geographical tendency was also detected for one of the three species analyzed at the population level. In addition, the warmer temperature had a negative effect on body size in scorpions at inter- and intraspecific levels. Based on these findings, we assert that body size in scorpions is not affected solely by their phylogenetic history, but also by the physiological constraints imposed by the environment, which becomes more evident across climatic gradients.

Morphospace saturation in the stem-gnathostomes pteraspidiformes heterostracans: an early radiation of a 'bottom' heavy clade

Ostracoderms (fossil armoured jawless fishes) shed light on early vertebrate evolution by revealing the step-wise acquisition of jawed vertebrate characters, and were important constituents of Middle Palaeozoic vertebrate faunas. A wide variety of head shield shapes are observed within and between the ostracoderm groups, but the timing of these diversifications and the consistency between different measures of their morphospace are unclear. Here, we present the first disparity (explored morphospace) versus diversity (number of taxa) analysis of Pteraspidiformes heterostracans using continuous and discrete characters. Patterns of taxic diversity and morphological disparity are in accordance: they both show a rise to a peak in the Lochkovian followed by a gradual decline in the Middle-Late Devonian. Patterns are largely consistent for disparity measures using sum of ranges or total variance, and when using continuous or discrete characters. Pteraspidiformes heterostracans can be classified as a "bottom-heavy clade", i.e., a group where a high initial disparity decreasing over time is detected. In fact, the group explored morphospace early in its evolutionary history, with much of the subsequent variation in dermal armour occurring as variation in the proportions of already evolved anatomical features. This Early Devonian radiation is also in agreement with the paleobiogeographic distribution of the group, with a maximum of dispersal and explored morphospace during the Lochkovian and Pragian time bins.
