Potential for Anthropogenic Fin Damage to Affect Individual Responses to Prey in Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus): A New Hypothesis for Kinematic Studies

In fishes, damage to important morphological structures such as fins through natural damage and anthropogenic factors can have cascading effects on prey capture performance and individual fitness. Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) are a common freshwater species in North America, are a model organism for performance studies, and often experience natural injuries. We opportunistically sampled two populations of fish in the lab to generate a hypothesis for the effect of sub-lethal fin damage resulting from the capture technique on kinematic performance during prey capture in bluegill. We found no statistical differences in mean prey capture kinematics or predator accuracy, but damaged fish used more variable kinematics and more readily struck at non-prey items. We suggest that a reduction in stability and individual consistency occurs as a result of fin damage. This difference could have consequences for higher-order ecological interactions such as competitive ability, despite a lack of apparent performance cost at the individual level, and deserves consideration in future studies of prey capture performance in fish.

Development and regeneration of periodontal supporting tissues

Periodontal tissues, including gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, play important roles in oral health. Under physiological conditions, periodontal tissues surround and support the teeth, maintaining the stability of the teeth and distributing the chewing forces. However, under pathological conditions, with the actions of various pathogenic factors, the periodontal tissues gradually undergo some irreversible changes, that is, gingival recession, periodontal ligament rupture, periodontal pocket formation, alveolar bone resorption, eventually leading to the loosening and even loss of the teeth. Currently, the regenerations of the periodontal tissues are still challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to study the development of the periodontal tissues, the principles and processes of which can be used to develop new strategies for the regeneration of periodontal tissues. This review summarizes the development of periodontal tissues and current strategies for periodontal healing and regeneration.

No Correlation between Endo- and Exoskeletal Regenerative Capacities in Teleost Species

The regeneration of paired appendages in certain fish and amphibian lineages is a well established and extensively studied regenerative phenomenon. The teleost fin is comprised of a proximal endoskeletal part (considered homologous to the Tetrapod limb) and a distal exoskeletal one, and these two parts form their bony elements through different ossification processes. In the past decade, a significant body of literature has been generated about the biology of exoskeletal regeneration in zebrafish. However, it is still not clear if this knowledge can be applied to the regeneration of endoskeletal parts. To address this question, we decided to compare endo- and exoskeletal regenerative capacity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and mudskippers (Periophthalmus barbarous). In contrast to the reduced endoskeleton of zebrafish, Periophthalmus has well developed pectoral fins with a large and easily accessible endoskeleton. We performed exo- and endoskeletal amputations in both species and followed the regenerative processes. Unlike the almost flawless exoskeletal regeneration observed in zebrafish, regeneration following endoskeletal amputation is often impaired in this species. This difference is even more pronounced in Periophthalmus where we could observe no regeneration in endoskeletal structures. Therefore, regeneration is regulated differentially in the exo- and endoskeleton of teleost species.
