Soluble melanins of the Randia echinocarpa fruit - Structural characteristics and toxicity

Comparative Study of SnO2 and ZnO Semiconductor Nanoparticles (Synthesized Using Randia echinocarpa) in the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Symmetry in nanomaterials is essential to know the behavior of their properties. In the present research, the photocatalytic properties of SnO2 and ZnO nanoparticles were compared for the degradation of the cationic dyes Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RB). The nanoparticles were obtained through a green synthesis process assisted by Randia echinocarpa extracts; they were then analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize their structure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to identify the morphology and disclose nanoparticle size, and the optical properties were studied through Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The results show that the synthesized SnO2 and ZnO nanomaterials have quasispherical morphologies with average sizes of 8–12 and 4–6 nm, cassiterite and wurtzite crystal phases, and band gap values of 3.5 and 3.8 eV, respectively. The photocatalytic activity yielded 100% degradation of the MB and RB dyes in 210 and 150 min, respectively. ZnO performed higher photocatalytic degradation of the cationic dyes than SnO2 due to a higher content of Randia echinocarpa extracts remaining after the green synthesis process.

Water-Soluble Melanoidin Pigment as a New Antioxidant Component of Fermented Willowherb Leaves (Epilobium angustifolium)

Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium L., family Onagraceae) is a well-known food and medicinal plant used after fermentation as a source of beverages with high antioxidant potential. Despite this long history of use, only a few papers have described the chemical profile and bioactivity of fermented willowherb tea in general. To understand the basic metabolic differences of non-fermented and fermented E. angustifolium leaves, we used general chemical analysis, high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection and electrospray ionization triple quadrupole mass spectrometric detection assay, and an isolation technique. As a result, the content of 14 chemical groups of compounds was compared in the two plant materials; 59 compounds were detected, including 36 new metabolites; and a new water-soluble phenolic polymer of melanoidin nature was isolated and characterized. The fundamental chemical shifts in fermented E. angustifolium leaves relate mainly to the decrease of ellagitannin content, while there is an increase of melanoidin percentage and saving of the antioxidant potential, despite the significant changes detected. The strong antioxidative properties of the new melanoidin were revealed in a series of in vitro bioassays, and a simulated gastrointestinal and colonic digestion model demonstrated the stability of melanoidin and its antioxidant activity. Finally, we concluded that the new melanoidin is a basic antioxidant of the fermented leaves of E. angustifolium, and it can be recommended for additional study as a promising food and medicinal antioxidant agent.

A novel melanin complex displayed the affinity to HepG2 cell membrane and nucleus

Chitosan-melanin complex from Catharsius molossus L. has proven to possess superior pharmaceutical excipient performance and may be the new source of water-soluble protein-free natural melanin. Herein, it was enzymatically hydrolyzed into the chitooligosaccharide-melanin complex (CMC) whose main chemical units were composed of eumelanin and chitooligosaccharides and showed three-layer structures. Additionally, this biomacromolecule could self-assemble into 40 nm nanoparticles (CMC Nps) in a weakly acidic aqueous solution. Interestingly, CMC displayed strong affinity for cell membrane by binding the phosphatidylserine, glycoprotein, glycolipids and glycosaminoglycans accumulated on the surface of tumor cells, notably, CMC Nps could enter cells and mainly target the nucleus by interacting with DNA and/or RNA substrates located around the nucleus to disrupt the proliferation and apoptosis processes. The findings suggest CMC may be the novel material for subcellular organelle targeting of cancer cells.
