Abstract
CONTEXT There is limited data on the clinical significance of metabolic hyperferritinemia (MHF) based on the most recent consensus. OBJECTIVE We aimed to validate the clinical outcomes of MHF in the general population and patients with biopsy-proven metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). METHODS The NHANES database and PERSONS cohort were included. MHF was defined as elevated serum ferritin with metabolic dysfunction (MD) and stratified into different grades according to ferritin (grade 1: 200 [females]/300 [males]-550 ng/mL; grade 2: 550-1000 ng/mL; grade 3: >1000 ng/mL). The clinical outcomes, including all-cause death, comorbidities, and liver histology, were compared between non-MHF and MHF in adjusted models. RESULTS In NHANES, compared with non-MHF with MD, MHF was related to higher risks of advanced fibrosis (P = .036), elevated albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR, P = .001), and sarcopenia (P = .013). Although the association between all grades of MHF and mortality was insignificant (P = .122), grades 2/3 was associated with increased mortality (P = .029). When comparing with non-MHF without MD, the harmful effects of MHF were more significant in mortality (P < .001), elevated UACR (P < .001), cardiovascular disease (P = .028), and sarcopenia (P < .001). In the PERSONS cohort, MHF was associated with more advanced grades of steatosis (P < .001), lobular inflammation (P < .001), advanced fibrosis (P = .017), and more severe hepatocellular iron deposition (P < .001). CONCLUSION Both in the general population and in at-risk individuals with MAFLD, MHF was related with poorer clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet indices have the potential for the evaluation of the activity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but their associations are under hard debate. This meta-analysis aims to assess whether platelet count (PC), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are associated with NAFLD and its progression. METHODS A literature search was conducted using electronic databases to find publications up to July 2022, where the relationship between PC, MPV, PDW and NAFLD was evaluated. Random-effects models were applied to pool effect estimates that were presented as standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Nineteen studies involving 3592 NAFLD patients and 1194 healthy individuals were included. The pooled results showed that NAFLD patients had a lower PC (SMD=-0.66, 95% CI =-1.22 to -0.09, P=0.023) but a higher MPV (SMD=0.89, 95% CI=0.26-1.51, P=0.005) and PDW (SMD=0.55, 95% CI=0.11-0.99, P=0.014) compared to healthy controls. Patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) exhibited a lower PC (SMD=-0.86, 95% CI=-1.20 to -0.52, P<0.001) and a higher MPV (SMD=0.71, 95% CI=0.40-1.02, P<0.001) than non-NASH individuals. A meta-regression analysis demonstrated that MPV was significantly positively correlated with aspartate aminotransferase (P=0.008), the total cholesterol (P=0.003), triglyceride (P=0.006) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.007), but was significantly negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.010). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis revealed that NAFLD patients presented a reduced PC but an increased MPV and PDW, and the changes might be associated with NAFLD severity. A higher MPV is associated with lipid metabolic disorders in NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) shares common pathophysiological mechanisms with type 2 diabetes, making them significant risk factors for type 2 diabetes. The present study aimed to assess the epidemiological feature of type 2 diabetes in patients with NAFLD or MAFLD at global levels. METHODS Published studies were searched for terms that included type 2 diabetes, and NAFLD or MAFLD using PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases from their inception to December 2022. The pooled global and regional prevalence and incidence density of type 2 diabetes in patients with NAFLD or MAFLD were evaluated using random-effects meta-analysis. Potential sources of heterogeneity were investigated using stratified meta-analysis and meta-regression. RESULTS A total of 395 studies (6,878,568 participants with NAFLD; 1,172,637 participants with MAFLD) from 40 countries or areas were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of type 2 diabetes among NAFLD or MAFLD patients was 28.3% (95% confidence interval 25.2-31.6%) and 26.2% (23.9-28.6%) globally. The incidence density of type 2 diabetes in NAFLD or MAFLD patients was 24.6 per 1000-person year (20.7 to 29.2) and 26.9 per 1000-person year (7.3 to 44.4), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The present study describes the global prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes in patients with NAFLD or MAFLD. The study findings serve as a valuable resource to assess the global clinical and economic impact of type 2 diabetes in patients with NAFLD or MAFLD.

Abstract
Objectives Obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are common worldwide health problems with a strong relationship in between. NAFLD is currently the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests (LFT) because of obesity pandemic. The question is NAFLD the only player of abnormal LFT in obesity? Methodology This article reviews the most important topics regarding the derangements of LFT in obesity through a PubMed search strategy for all English-language literature. Results The reported abnormal LFT in obesity were increased serum levels of transaminases (alanine aminotransaminase, aspartate aminotransaminase), gamma glutamyl transferase, and alkaline phosphatase and decreased serum levels of bilirubin and albumin. Besides novel potential hepatic markers of NAFLD/NASH such as triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, sex hormone-binding globulin, fibroblast growth factor 21, and markers of hepatocyte apoptosis i.e. cytokeratin 18 and microribonucleic acids (miRNAs). Beyond NAFLD, there are other underlying players for the abnormal LFT in obesity such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Conclusion Derangements of LFT in obesity are attributed to NAFLD but also to obesity itself and its related oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammatory state. Abnormal LFT predict more than just liver disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS NAFLD is one of the fast-growing health problems that affects up to 25% of people worldwide. Numerous miRNAs have been clarified as important regulators of liver pathophysiology, including NAFLD. Thus, we investigated the expression of the MiRNA-34a and MiRNA-192 as diagnostic markers for NAFLD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Blood samples were collected from NAFLD cases and healthy controls. The expression profile of both studied miRNAs was detected via real-time PCR analysis. RESULTS The present study showed that both studied miRNAs were upregulated in NAFLD patients compared to controls. Interestingly, miRNA-34a and MiRNA-192 are upregulated in NAFLD patients with early fibrosis compared to controls [with a fold change of 4.02 ± 11.49 (P = 0.05) and 18.43 ± 47.8 (P = 0.017), respectively]. However, miRNA-34a is downregulated in NAFLD patients with advanced fibrosis compared to controls, with fold expression of 0.65 ± 1.17 (P = 0.831). The area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) for miRNA-34a and miRNA-192 were 0.790 and 0.643, respectively; furthermore, the sensitivities and specificities were 76.7%, 100% for miRNA-34a and 63.3%, and 93.3% for miRNA-192 (P < 0.05). Additionally, MiRNA34a was positively correlated with hypertension and fasting blood sugar, and it also was negatively correlated with hemoglobin level and total leucocyte count (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results obtained indicated that both studied miRNAs could potentially be used as diagnostic biomarkers for the early stage of liver fibrosis in NAFLD cases. Also, miRNA-34a was positively correlated with metabolic disorders associated with NAFLD such as hypertension and diabetes. However, their expression showed no association with advanced fibrosis. Thus, larger cohorts are necessitated to certify the utility of serum MiRNA-34a and MiRNA-192 in monitoring the deterioration of NAFLD.

Abstract
Background Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a progressive form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The diagnostic gold standard for detecting NASH still relies upon an invasive pathological biopsy. There is, therefore, a need to identify non-invasive diagnostic markers. Oxidative stress mediates fatty liver progression to NASH. Imbalanced iron metabolism produces many reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ceruloplasmin is associated with oxidase and iron metabolism-related activities. The current study aimed to determine whether there was a correlation between ceruloplasmin levels and NASH and whether such a relationship may be associated with altered iron metabolism in NASH patients. Methods A total of 135 NAFLD patients were enrolled in this study. A pathological biopsy confirmed that 60 of those patients had NAFLD activity scores (NAS) 5, while the remaining 75 had NAS<5. Results Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves confirmed that serum ceruloplasmin and ferritin levels were predictors of NAS 5 and NAS<5, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.80 and 0.81, respectively. The serum ceruloplasmin levels in NAS 5 patients were significantly lower than those in NAS<5 patients (p< 0.001). Serum ceruloplasmin levels were also negatively correlated with ferritin levels. Lower serum ceruloplasmin levels were associated with more severe histopathological findings. Conclusions Low serum ceruloplasmin and high serum ferritin are correlated with NASH. A high concentration of serum ferritin is a viable clinical biomarker of NASH, and low serum ceruloplasmin may participate in the occurrence of NASH by regulating iron load, which can be used as a non-invasive diagnostic marker of NASH.

Abstract
Introduction Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common liver disorder across the world, and non-invasive evaluation approaches are in need to assess NAFLD disease progression. Serum ferritin has been proposed as one of the biomarkers for NAFLD diagnosis in previous studies. This systematic review aims to identify, report, and synthesize studies that investigated the association of serum ferritin level with the various stages of NAFLD among the adult population. Methods Three databases – MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus – were systematically searched to obtain potentially relevant publications before July 2022. No restrictions were applied to geographical region, study design, publication type and language. The association between serum ferritin level or different ferritin categories and the various stages of NAFLD was the primary outcome of interest. Title and abstract screenings, data extraction and coding, and quality assessment were independently completed by two authors with discrepancies resolved through discussion with a third author. Results Thirty-two studies were included and heterogeneity was considerable. The associations between serum ferritin level and the stages of hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, inflammation and ballooning and the occurrence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) were investigated but inconsistent associations were reported. Most studies identified serum ferritin to be a predictor of advanced NAFLD, while several revealed the opposite end. Conclusions Serum ferritin could be considered to act as a non-invasive biomarker for assessing various stages of NAFLD. Nevertheless, further studies are still in need to confirm its predictive value since this study reported inconsistent associations based on the qualitative synthesis. Abstract
Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) increases the possibility to suffer from liver or cardiovascular disease. Although hepatic biopsy is well acknowledged as the standard diagnosis, it is difficult to implement because of its intrusiveness and cost concerns.
Moreover, overweight people or diabetic patients are always NAFLD-positive, but not absolute. Therefore, to distinguish whether a diabetic case has NAFLD via nonintrusive indicators is of great significance for further interventions. Objective: With 8499 diabetic patients hosted by Shanghai
Sixth People’s Hospital, we try to rank the impacts of multiple routine indicators (features) on NAFLD, and further predict NAFLD within this diabetic population. Methods: We first rank dozens of related features according to their contributions in NAFLD prediction, and then we
prune several trivial features to simplify the prediction. Additionally, three classification algorithms are considered and compared, e.g., C4.5, Naïve Bayes and Random Forest. Results: The experiment shows that Random Forest outperforms the rest (accuracy 85.1%, recall 90.98%
and AUC 0.631). Conclusions: We find that the top nine markers together can effectively tell NAFLD out of this diabetic population. They are triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), insulin (INS), hbA1C, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), age, total
cholesterol (TC) and duration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its progression may differ between men and women. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the relationship between sex and NAFLD, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and advanced NAFLD fibrosis. METHODS Studies reporting sex-stratified NAFLD prevalence among population-based samples and either NASH or advanced fibrosis among patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were identified from MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases through December 2017. We calculated pooled relative risk ratios comparing women vs men for each outcome. RESULTS Our final analysis comprised 54 studies. Samples sizes were 62,239 for the NAFLD analysis, 5428 for the NASH analysis, and 6444 for the advanced fibrosis analysis. Women had a 19% lower risk of NAFLD than men in the general population (pooled risk ratio [RR], 0.81; 95% CI, 0.68-0.97; I2 = 97.5%). Women had a similar risk of NASH (RR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.88-1.14; I2 = 85.1%), and a 37% higher risk of advanced fibrosis (RR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.12-1.68; I2 = 74.0%) than men. Age modified the effect of sex on NAFLD severity. Risks of NASH (RR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.01-1.36) and advanced fibrosis (RR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.36-1.80; I2 = 0) were substantially higher in women in study populations with average ages of 50 years and older; sex differences in NASH and advanced fibrosis were attenuated in younger populations. CONCLUSIONS In a systematic review and meta-analysis, we found women to have a lower risk of NAFLD than men. However, once NAFLD is established, women have a higher risk of advanced fibrosis than men, especially after age 50 years.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a global public problem despite the availability of an effective vaccine. In the past decades, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has surpassed HBV as the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The prevalence of concomitant chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and NAFLD thus reaches endemic proportions in geographic regions where both conditions are common. Patients with CHB and NAFLD are at increased risk of liver disease progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Due to the complexity of the pathogenesis, accurate diagnosis of NAFLD in CHB patients can be challenging. Liver biopsy is considered the gold standard for diagnosing and determining disease severity, but it is an invasive procedure with potential complications. There is a growing body of literature on the application of novel noninvasive serum biomarkers and advanced radiological modalities to diagnose and evaluate NAFLD, but most have not been adequately validated, especially for patients with CHB. Currently, there is no approved therapy for NAFLD, although many new agents are in different phases of development. This review provides a summary of the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of the NAFLD and highlights the unmet needs in the areas of CHB and NAFLD coexistence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association between serum ferritin levels and the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in postmenopausal women. METHODS Two hundred and forty-one postmenopausal women who participated in a heath examination program were enrolled in the present study. Serum ferritin tertiles were categorized as follows: T1, ≤46.4 ng/ml; T2, 46.5-76.1 ng/ml; and T3, ≥76.2 ng/ml. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for NAFLD were calculated after adjusting for confounding variables across serum ferritin tertiles using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 41.4% and was significantly increased in accordance with the serum ferritin tertiles as follows: 30.0% for T1, 40.7% for T2, and 54.3% for T3, respectively. As compared with the lowest tertile, the OR (95% CI) for NAFLD in the highest tertile was 2.69 (1.16-5.28) after adjusting for age, body mass index, regular exercise, mean arterial pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, and leukocyte count. CONCLUSION The serum ferritin level was positively and independently associated with NAFLD in postmenopausal women and could be a useful additional measure in assessing the risk of NAFLD in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 25% of the global adult population and is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the active form of NAFLD, with hepatic necroinflammation and faster fibrosis progression. With an increasing number of patients developing NASH-related end-stage liver disease and pharmacological treatments on the horizon, there is a pressing need to develop NAFLD and NASH biomarkers for prognostication, selection of patients for treatment and monitoring. This requirement is particularly true as liver biopsy utility is limited by its invasive nature, poor patient acceptability and sampling variability. This article reviews current and potential biomarkers for different features of NAFLD, namely, steatosis, necroinflammation and fibrosis. For each biomarker, we evaluate its accuracy, reproducibility, responsiveness, feasibility and limitations. We cover biochemical, imaging and genetic biomarkers and discuss biomarker discovery in the omics era.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the critical stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The persistence of necroinflammatory lesions and fibrogenesis in NASH is the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and, ultimately, hepatocellular carcinoma. To date, the histological examination of liver biopsies, albeit invasive, remains the means to distinguish NASH from simple steatosis (NAFL). Therefore, a noninvasive diagnosis by serum biomarkers is eagerly needed. Here, by a proteomic approach, we analysed the soluble low-molecular-weight protein fragments flushed out from the liver tissue of NAFL and NASH patients. On the basis of the assumption that steatohepatitis leads to the remodelling of the liver extracellular matrix (ECM), NASH-specific fragments were in silico analysed for their involvement in the ECM molecular composition. The 10 kDa C-terminal fragment of the ECM protein vitronectin (VTN) was then selected as a promising circulating biomarker in discriminating NASH. The analysis of sera of patients provided these major findings: the circulating VTN fragment (i) is overexpressed in NASH patients and positively correlates with the NASH activity score (NAS); (ii) originates from the disulfide bond reduction between the V10 and the V65 subunits. In conclusion, V10 determination in the serum could represent a reliable tool for the noninvasive discrimination of NASH from simple steatosis.

Abstract
Background A growing number of studies reported the connection between the level of serum ferritin (SFL) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, such connection was still disputable. The aim of our meta-analysis was to estimate SFL between the groups as below: patients with NAFLD against control group; non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients against control group; non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) patients against a control group and NASH patients vs NAFL patients. Methods We screened the studies in PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Database and the Cochrane Central register controlled trials from the beginning to July 10, 2016 to find the studies indicated the connection between SFL and NAFLD (NAFL and/or NASH). Fourteen published studies which evaluate the SFL in NAFLD patients were selected. Results Higher SFL was noticed in NAFLD patients against control group (standardized mean difference [SMD] 1.01; 95% CI 0.89, 1.13), NASH patients against control group (SMD 1.21; 95% CI 1.00, 1.42), NAFL patients against control group (SMD 0.51; 95% CI 0.24, 0.79) and NASH patients against NAFL patients (SMD 0.63; 95% CI 0.52, 0.75). These results remained unaltered actually after the elimination of studies which were focused on paediatric or adolescent populations. Higher SFL was presented in NAFLD patients against the control group (SMD 1.08; 95% CI 0.95, 1.20) in adults and NASH patients against NAFL patients in adults (SMD 0.74; 95% CI 0.62, 0.87). The connection between SFL and NASH against NAFL group in paediatric or adolescent populations was observed inconsistently (SMD 0.10; 95% CI -0.18, 0.38). Conclusions The level of SFL was elevated in patients with NAFLD (NAFL and/or NASH) compared with the controls. Compared with NAFL, The level of SFL was increased in NASH. The result remained unaltered actually after the elimination of studies focused on paediatric or adolescent populations.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease and is associated with the worldwide epidemics of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. NAFLD ranges from benign fat accumulation in the liver (steatosis) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and cirrhosis which can progress to hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure. Mass spectrometry and magnetic resonance spectroscopy-coupled stable isotope-based flux studies provide new insights into the understanding of NAFLD pathogenesis and the disease progression. This review focuses mainly on the utilization of mass spectrometry-based methods for the understanding of metabolic abnormalities in the different stages of NAFLD. For example, stable isotope-based flux studies demonstrated multi-organ insulin resistance, dysregulated glucose, lipids and lipoprotein metabolism in patients with NAFLD. We also review recent developments in the stable isotope-based technologies for the study of mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and fibrogenesis in NAFLD. We highlight the limitations of current methodologies, discuss the emerging areas of research in this field, and future directions for the applications of stable isotopes to study NAFLD and its complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of fibrosis and inflammatory activity is essential to identify patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) at risk for progressive disease. Serum markers and ultrasound-based methods can replace liver biopsy for fibrosis staging, whereas non-invasive characterization of inflammatory activity remains a clinical challenge. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a novel non-invasive biomarker for assessing cellular inflammation and cell death, which has not been evaluated in NAFLD. METHODS Patients and healthy controls from two previous studies were included. NAFLD disease activity and severity were non-invasively characterized by liver stiffness measurement (transient elastography, TE) including steatosis assessment with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), single-proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) for determination of hepatic fat fraction, aminotransferases and serum ferritin. cfDNA levels (90 and 222 bp fragments) were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS Fifty-eight NAFLD patients (age 62 ± 11 years, BMI 28.2 ± 3.5 kg/m2) and 13 healthy controls (age 38 ± 12 years, BMI 22.4 ± 2.1 kg/m2) were included. 90 bp cfDNA levels were significantly higher in NAFLD patients compared to healthy controls: 3.7 (1.3-23.1) vs. 2.9 (1.4-4.1) ng/mL (p = 0.014). In the NAFLD cohort, circulating cfDNA correlated significantly with disease activity and severity, especially in patients with elevated liver stiffness (n = 13, 22%) compared to cases with TE values ≤7 kPa: cf90 bp 6.05 (2.41-23.13) vs. 3.16 (1.29-7.31) ng/mL (p < 0.001), and cf222 bp 14.41 (9.27-22.90) vs. 11.32 (6.05-18.28) ng/mL (p = 0.0041). CONCLUSIONS Cell-free DNA plasma concentration correlates with established non-invasive markers of NAFLD activity and severity. Therefore, cfDNA should be further evaluated as biomarker for identifying patients at risk for progressive NAFLD.

Abstract
AIM To assess disease-specific circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients.
METHODS A total of 111 biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients and healthy controls from mainland China were enrolled to measure their serum levels of miR-122, -125b, -146b, -16, -21, -192, -27b and -34a. The correlations between serum miRNAs and histological features of NAFLD were determined. The diagnostic value of miRNA in NASH and significant fibrosis was analyzed and compared with that of cytokeratin-18 (CK-18), fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), and aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI), respectively.
RESULTS Circulating miR-122, -16, -192 and -34a showed differential expression levels between NAFLD and CHB patients, and miR-34a had an approximately 2-fold increase in NAFLD samples compared with that of CHB samples (P < 0.01). Serum miR-122, -192 and -34a levels were correlated with steatosis (R = 0.302, 0.323 and 0.470, respectively, P < 0.05) and inflammatory activity (R = 0.445, 0.447 and 0.517, respectively, P < 0.01); only serum miR-16 levels were associated with fibrosis (R = 0.350, P < 0.05) in patients with NAFLD. The diagnostic value of miR-34a for NASH (area under the receiver operating characteristic, 0.811, 95%CI: 0.670-0.953) was superior to that of alanine aminotransferase, CK-18, FIB-4 and APRI in NAFLD, but miR-16 showed a limited performance in the diagnosis of significant fibrosis in NASH.
CONCLUSION Circulating miR-34a may serve as a disease-specific noninvasive biomarker for the diagnosis of NASH.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common liver disease worldwide. It is related with increased morbidity and mortality of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, its main health implications are increased risks of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular diseases and malignancies. This paper reviews the advances in research of NAFLD in terms of epidemiology, risk factors, assessment of disease progression and risks for combined cardiovascular diseases and/or T2D as well as management.
