Rare Nasopharyngeal Neuroendocrine Tumor in a 26-Year-Old Female: Case Report and Literature Review

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) represent a collection of highly varied tumors that originate from neuroendocrine cells. They are considered rare tumors that predominantly affect the lungs. Epithelial NENs can be categorized into neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and neuroendocrine carcinomas. It is extremely rare for NET grade 1 (NET G1) to exist in the nasopharynx, these tumors are slow-growing and the onset of symptoms and identification of the tumor may take several years. The majority of cases occur in ages between 60 and 65 years. In this article, we present a case of a 26-year-old female who presented with recurrent epistaxis and nasal obstruction for one and a half years. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a substantial nasopharyngeal mass. Subsequently, a biopsy was conducted, and the histopathological results indicated a NET G1. Our literature review revealed 5 cases of NET G1 in the nasopharynx, with our patient being the youngest among all published cases.

A Review of the Evolving Role of Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms

BACKGROUND

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare tumours that develop from neuroendocrine cells in various parts of the body. The management of this disease poses a significant challenge because of the heterogeneous clinical presentation and varying degrees of aggressiveness. A multidisciplinary approach is often required in complex clinical situations. Radiotherapy (RT) plays a key role in managing NETs in both curative and palliative settings.

SUMMARY

In this review, we summarize and discuss recent developments in the field of advanced RT in early-stage, locally advanced, and metastatic NENs. We highlight limitations in current approaches and discuss future potential treatment strategies for patients with NENs.

Nasopharyngeal Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Synchronized With Nasopharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are poorly differentiated neuroendocrine tumors of the upper respiratory tract. We present an extremely rare case of nasopharyngeal large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) synchronized with nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Both SCC and LCNEC are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, supported by the positive result of Epstein-Barr encoding region in-situ hybridization. Strong correlation is found between EBV infection and nasopharyngeal malignancies. Furthermore, the EBV status might be a crucial prognostic factor in nasopharyngeal LCNEC. EBV-positive LCNEC is effective to chemoradiotherapy, and may have preferable outcome than EBV-negative LCNEC arising in the nasopharynx or other sites. The recognition of the EBV status is important for patients to receive appropriate treatment.
