Clinical outcomes and technical tips for eyebrow restoration using single-follicular-unit hair transplantation: A case series review

Clinic Analysis and Effective Improvement Tips for Poor Eyebrow Transplantation

BACKGROUND

Follicular unit hair transplantation has greatly elevated the results of eyebrow restoration. However, unnatural and unbeautiful-looking results are still often seen after the surgery.

OBJECTIVES

This study focused on poor eyebrow transplantation, discussed its possible reasons, and offered refined proposals.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis was performed on 100 patients who were dissatisfied with the results of eyebrow grafting and came to our department from 2011 to 2021. Demographic characteristics, primary disease, and clinical data were objectively summarized and analyzed for these patients.

RESULTS

The patients' medical charts and photographs were analyzed and summarized into the following outcomes: Thirty-six patients (36%) had sparse eyebrows. Forty-one patients (41%) had eyebrows with inhomogeneous density and disordered growth direction. Eleven patients (11%) did not have single-hair grafting. Seven reconstructed eyebrows (7%) had a poor connection with the remaining eyebrows. Five new eyebrows (5%) had inconsistent hair characteristics with the original eyebrows. Lower hair survival rates, insufficient understanding of naturally beautiful eyebrows, and inadequate communication with patients were the main reasons for poor outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Good reconstructed eyebrows should have a high hair survival rate, and hair growth direction and characteristics should also be consistent with the natural eyebrow to achieve ideal surgical effects.

The Training and Application of Silicone Products in Eyebrow Transplantation Simulation

BACKGROUND

Because the structure of eyebrows is complicated, students need a lot of practice to become familiar with the distribution pattern of eyebrow hair.

OBJECTIVES

The current study was designed to investigate training methods for eyebrow design and planting practice before eyebrow hair transplantation to improve planting quality.

METHODS

Twelve surgical students were selected. The 6 students in the experimental group had never performed eyebrow transplantation surgery, whereas the 6 in the control group had experience of the procedure. Students in both groups received theoretical and simulated eyebrow hair transplantation instruction. Students were required to master standard eyebrow transplantation. The results of the experimental group and the control group were compared before and after training.

RESULTS

The results revealed that the overall results of the experimental and control groups significantly improved compared with before training (P < .05). After theoretical training, 2-dimensional simulation training, and 3-dimensional simulation training, eyebrow shape, symmetry, hair angle, and density after the 3-dimensional simulation training were statistically significantly improved (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference, and the students in the control group did not demonstrate any improvement in their capacity to arrange the eyebrows or shape them symmetrically. After training, however, the angle and density of the hair substantially improved.

CONCLUSIONS

The experimental group's technical ability in simulated eyebrow planting significantly improved. The present study demonstrated that the students could develop their skills and get closer to the level of surgeons with experience in eyebrow transplant surgery by integrating theoretical lectures with practiced procedures.

Frontal-Temporal Triangle Area Hair for Eyebrow Restoration in Asians: A Comparative Study With Periauricular and Occipital Hair

BACKGROUND

The frontal-temporal triangle area (FTTA) hair has a slow growth rate and thin caliber, which are similar to those of eyebrow hair. However, a comparison of cosmetic outcomes between FTTA and other scalp hair grafts in eyebrow transplantation has not been performed.

OBJECTIVE

To compare the cosmetic outcomes of FTTA hair and periauricular and occipital area (POA) hair in eyebrow restoration.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis of 155 patients with FTTA or POA hair transplants was performed. Comparative variables included patient characteristics, hair density, diameter, percentage of one-hair follicular units (FUs), number of transplanted FUs, harvesting time, transection rate, hair survival rate, frequency of eyebrow trimming, and patient satisfaction.

RESULTS

There was a significant difference in hair density, diameter, percentage of one-hair FUs, and harvesting time between the FTTA and POA hair transplants. The FTTA hair grew significantly slower than the POA hair did. The patients in the FTTA group trimmed their postoperative eyebrows at a significantly longer interval than those in the POA group. The percentage of patients who were very satisfied with the surgery results was higher in the FTTA group.

CONCLUSION

The FTTA hair grafts can provide aesthetically pleasing cosmetic results in eyebrow restoration.

Treatment of scarring alopecia in children using follicular unit hair transplantation

BACKGROUND

Scarring alopecia can significantly affect children emotionally. Follicular unit excision (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) have been applied for scar treatment.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of follicular unit hair transplantation in treating scarring alopecia in children.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A total of nine children (seven males and two females) with cicatricial alopecia, ranging in age from 5 years, 2 months to 12 years, 10 months were included in this study. Scar formation time ranged from 7 months to 5 years. Sites were vertex (2), eyebrow (3), frontal hairline (3), and temporal regions (2).

RESULTS

Nine children in this group were followed up for 6-34 months with the following treatment options: FUE (5 cases), FUT (3 cases), and FUT combined with FUE (1 case). No significant complications were observed during the treatment. The transplanted hair grew well, the direction and shape were satisfactory, and the survival rate was >90%.

CONCLUSION

For children with burn trauma and cicatricial alopecia after surgery, hair transplantation can significantly improve their appearance with low surgical risk and high patient satisfaction rate.
