Abstract
PURPOSE Preoperative evaluation of elective surgery patients traditionally focuses on somatic and organizational aspects of the situation. Patient feelings of readiness, called preoperative readiness (PR), impacts postoperative outcomes, and yet is rarely evaluated. The Preoperative Assessment Tool (PART) is a validated and reliable 15-item questionnaire available in Filipino and English. A reliable tool is essential for evaluating PR within the Swiss health context to offer optimized and comprehensive perioperative care. The aim of this study was to both translate into French and adapt culturally the Preoperative Assessment Tool for Switzerland's francophone population, and to explore patient PR in the preoperative consultation within a Swiss tertiary hospital. DESIGN A mixed design with methodologic phases and descriptive study. METHODS A mixed design in two phases with a methodologic phase with (1) translation and (2) cultural adaptation for Romandie of the PART, following Wild's 10 steps methodology (n = 11) and (3) a cross-sectional exploratory descriptive study with pilot testing of the translated version in a general elective preoperative consultation in a tertiary hospital in Romandie (N = 88). FINDINGS Translation and cultural adaptations are well accepted and understood by the participants (n = 9/11), modifications are accepted by the authors and deemed adequate by the participants (n = 11/11). Time of completion is short (m = 69.06 seconds) and adapted to clinical context. The translated version has a Cronbach (α = 0.85) comparable to the original validated scale (α = 0.86). CONCLUSIONS The translation and cultural adaptation for Switzerland of the PART was achieved, and PR was explored. Further psychometric testing of the PART-FrenCH must be conducted to assess fully the tool before its use in a clinical setting. Including PR in preoperative evaluations could enhance patient-centered approaches and lead to improvement in the quality of care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient engagement has emerged as a key focus in the research literature to facilitate patients' recovery. The term is commonly used by researchers, yet without working definitions. This lack of clarity is further complicated by the interchangeable use of a few terms. OBJECTIVES This systematic review aimed at identifying how patient engagement was conceptualised and operationalised in perioperative settings. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library were searched for publications in English discussing patient engagement during the perioperative phase. Three reviewers conducted study selection and methodological assessment using Joanna Briggs Institute mixed methods review framework. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data and descriptive analysis for quantitative data. FINDINGS Twenty-nine studies were included with a total sample of 6289. Study types included qualitative (n = 14) and quantitative (n = 15) with different types of surgery. Sample sizes ranged from n = 7 to n = 1315. Only 38% (n = 11) of included studies offered an explicit definition. Four themes associated with operationalisation included provision of information, which was most studied theme, communication, decision-making and action-taking behaviours. All four themes were interconnected and co-dependent on each other. CONCLUSIONS Patient engagement in perioperative settings is a complex and multifaceted concept. The conceptual void in the literature calls for more theoretically informed and comprehensive approaches to researching surgical patient engagement. Future research should aim to better understand the factors that influence patient engagement, as well as the impact of different forms of engagement on patient outcomes through the whole surgical journey of a patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore how stroke survivors experience and prefer to participate in clinical reasoning processes in the acute phase of stroke care. METHODS An explorative qualitative design was used. Individual interviews were conducted with 11 stroke survivors in the acute phase of care and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS The analysis identified five themes: What's going on with me?; Being a recipient of care and treatment; The need to be supported to participate; To be seen and strengthened; and Collaboration and joint understanding. CONCLUSION Stroke survivors experience many attributes of person-centeredness in the acute phase of care but, according to their stories, their participation in clinical reasoning can be further supported. The tension between surrendering and the desire to be more actively involved in the care needs to be considered to facilitate participation in clinical reasoning. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Stroke survivors' participation in clinical reasoning in the acute phase can be facilitated by health professionals noticing signs prompting a shift towards increased willingness to participate. Furthermore, health professionals need to take an active role, sharing their expertise and inviting the stroke survivors to share their perspective. The findings can contribute to further develop person-centered care in acute settings.

Abstract
AIM To explore communication research in nursing by investigating the theoretical approaches, methods, content and perspectives in research on real-time registered nurse (RN)-patient communication. DESIGN An integrative review of real-time communication between RNs and patients. DATA SOURCES Empirical research papers were searched in PubMed, CINAHL Plus and Medline. The results from the database searches were supplemented with results from manual searches in reference lists. REVIEW METHODS A total of 1369 articles published between January 1996 and December 2021 were screened, which resulted in the inclusion of 52 articles. RESULTS The integration of various theories, such as nursing or communication theories, is weak in most of the included studies. RN-patient communication appears to influence relationship building. Even when nurses strive to meet patients' needs, they often focus primarily on nursing routines and physical care. The topic of the communication varies depending on the situation and different communication styles are used. When a patient-centred approach is adopted, the interpersonal communication becomes quite symmetrical, with complementary roles of nurses and patients. Within a more asymmetric communication context, nurses dominate communication, choose topics and function as instructors. How the nurses communicated subsequently influenced the patients' communication styles and strategies. CONCLUSION Communication is multifaceted, contains different strategies and is important for building trust and facilitating patient-centred care. The importance of RNs' communication for interaction and relationship-building seems to be well established within research, but few studies focused on patients' communication with RNs. IMPACT This integrative review gives an overview of the width and depth of observational studies on RN-patient communication research. The variety of studies indicates that this area is a less well-grounded field of research. Future research is warranted to support nurses in their communication, especially regarding the exploration of patients' communication and desired communication skills in nurse-patient interactions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Quality cancer care necessitates opportunities for patient participation, supposedly recognizing the individual's preferences and experiences for being involved in their health and healthcare issues. Previous research shows that surgical cancer patients wish to be more involved, requiring professionals to be sensitive of patients' needs. AIMS To explore preference-based patient participation in surgical cancer care. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. The Patient Preferences for Patient Participation tool (4Ps) was used, which includes 12 attributes of preferences for and experiences of patient participation. Data were analyzed with descriptive and comparative statistical methods. RESULTS The results are based on a total of 101 questionnaires. Having reciprocal communication and being listened to by healthcare staff were commonly deemed crucial for patient participation. While 60% of the patients suggested that taking part in planning was crucial for their participation, they had experienced this only to some extent. Learning to manage symptoms and phrasing personal goals were items most often representing insufficient conditions for preference-based patient participation. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION To support person-centered surgical care, further efforts to suffice preference-based participation are needed, including opportunities for patients to share their experiences and engage in the planning of healthcare activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore colorectal cancer (CRC) patients' perspectives and experiences regarding the preoperative surgical care pathway and their subsequent preparedness for surgery and postoperative recovery. METHODS CRC patients were recruited using purposive sampling and were interviewed three times (preoperatively, and 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively) using semistructured telephone interviews. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and analysed independently by two researchers using thematic analysis with open coding. RESULTS Data saturation was achieved after including 18 patients. Preoperative factors that contributed to a feeling of preparedness for surgery and recovery were patient-centred- and professional healthcare organization, sincere and personal guidance, and thorough information provision. Postoperatively, patients with complications or physical complaints experienced unmet information needs regarding the impact of complications and what to expect from postoperative recovery. CONCLUSIONS The preoperative period is a vital period to prepare patients for surgery and recovery in which patients most value personalized information, personal guidance and professionalism. According to CRC patients, the feeling of preparedness for surgery and recovery can be improved by continually providing dosed information. This information should provide the patient with patient-tailored perspectives regarding the impact of (potential) complications and what to expect during recovery.

Abstract
Engagement with the historical and theoretical underpinnings of measuring quality of life (QoL) and patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) in healthcare is important. Ideas and values that shape such practices—and in the endgame, people's lives—might otherwise remain unexamined, be taken for granted or even essentialized. Our aim is to explicate and theoretically discuss the philosophical tenets underlying the practices of QoL assessment and PRO measurement in relation to the notion of person‐centredness. First, we engage with the late‐modern history of the concept of QoL and the act of assessing and measuring it. Working with the historical method of genealogy, we describe the development of both QoL assessments and PRO measures (PROMs) within healthcare by accounting for the contextual conditions for their possibility. In this way, the historical and philosophical underpinnings of these measurement practices are highlighted. We move on to analyse theoretical and philosophical underpinnings regarding the use of PROMs and QoL assessments in clinical practice, as demonstrated in review studies thereof. Finally, we offer a critical analysis regarding the state of theory in the literature and conclude that, although improved person‐centredness is an implied driver of QoL assessments and PROMs in clinical practice, enhanced theoretical underpinning of the development of QoL assessments is called for.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Narratives play a central part in person-centred care (PCC) as a communicative means of attending to patients' experiences. The present study sets out to explore what activities are performed and what challenges participants face in the interactive process of narrative elicitation, carried through in patient-professional communication in a remote intervention based on PCC. METHODS Data were gathered from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in a Swedish city where health care professionals (HCPs) conducted remote PCC for patients on sick leave due to common mental disorders. A sample of eleven audio-recorded phone conversations between HCPs and patients enroled in the RCT were collected and subjected to conversation analysis. RESULTS Three interactive patterns in narrative elicitation were identified: Completed narrative sequences driven by the patient, question-driven narrative sequences guided by the HCP, and narrative sequences driven as a collaborative project between the patient and the HCP. In the question-driven narrative sequences, communication was problematic for both participants and they did not accomplish a narrative. In the other two patterns, narratives were accomplished but through various collaborative processes. CONCLUSION This study provides insight into what challenges narrative elicitation may bring in the context of a remote PCC intervention and what interactive work patients and HCP need to engage in. Importantly, it also highlights tensions in the ethics of PCC and its operationalization, if the pursuit of a narrative is not properly balanced against the respect for patients' integrity and personal preferences. Our findings also show that narrative elicitation may represent an interactive process in PCC in which illness narratives are jointly produced, negotiated and transformed. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Stakeholders, including patient representatives, were involved in the design of the main study (the RCT). They have been involved in discussions on research questions and dissemination throughout the study period. They have not been involved in conducting the present study.

Abstract
Preoperative readiness indicates the patient's capacity to process information, consider possible outcomes, and decide to undergo a surgical procedure. This systematic review examines how the term "patient readiness" is used in the literature and synthesizes how preoperative interventions address readiness. A medical librarian searched five electronic databases to identify articles published between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2019, that address studies including adult patients scheduled for surgery who participated in programs designed to foster readiness or studies that explored surgical readiness. After extracting 28 studies, the authors assessed the articles for quality and thematically synthesized them to describe actions and indicators of patient readiness according to the Perioperative Patient Focused Model. Readiness can positively influence surgical outcomes (eg, pain, satisfaction); however, there is a paucity of high-level, quality evidence that discusses surgical readiness for perioperative care. Nurses should use the information in this review to improve patient-centered preoperative care.

Abstract
The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Program aims to transfer much of the responsibility for postoperative recovery to the patient and their next of kin. The aim of the study was to identify and describe women's experiences of care within this program in relation to gynecological abdominal surgery. A qualitative approach was used where 16 women were interviewed within 1 to 2 weeks of their surgery. A thematic analysis focusing on interpretation of latent content was performed. Three themes were identified: Empowerment, Self-care, and Participation. Empowerment represents aspects of the recovery program that strengthen self-efficacy, such as being seen, being given information, and continuity of care. Self-care identifies the practical implications of empowerment, namely internal resources, knowledge, and external resources. These two themes were identified as separate but interlinked through the theme Participation. Preoperative information, postoperative encouragement, and follow-up empowered the women in their recovery. Early discharge from hospital was beneficial for recovery if accompanied by social support and sufficient self-care ability. A desire for a person-centered approach in the preoperative meeting and in postoperative care was identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the information and advice on return to work received by patients undergoing total hip and knee replacement. AIMS To investigate patients' views and experiences of work-related advice provided by clinicians, and how this might be improved. METHODS Semi-structured interviews with patients who had undergone total hip and knee replacement, were working prior to surgery and intended to return to work. Data were analysed thematically. RESULTS Forty-five patients from three UK regions were consented. Eight themes were identified including lack of information, lack of an individualized approach and accessibility and acceptability of information dissemination methods. Patients identified their information needs and who they felt was best placed to address them. CONCLUSIONS Patients receive little information and advice on return to work following total hip and knee replacement, although not all patients required this. However, more focus is needed on providing this, and patients should be screened to ensure resources are best targeted with interventions being tailored to the individual.

Abstract
To meet patients’ information and communication needs over time in order to improve their recovery is particularly challenging for patients undergoing cancer surgery. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether an intervention with a person-centred approach to information and communication for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer undergoing surgery can improve the patients’ preparedness for surgery, discharge and recovery during six months following diagnosis and initial treatment. The intervention components involving a novel written interactive patient education material and person-centred communication was based on critical analysis of conventional information and communication for these patients. During 2014–2016, 488 consecutive patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer were enrolled in a quasi-experimental longitudinal study. In three hospitals, first a conventional care group (n = 250) was recruited, then the intervention was introduced, and finally the intervention group was recruited (n = 238). Patients’ trajectories of preparedness for surgery and recovery (Preparedness for Colorectal Cancer Surgery Questionnaire—PCSQ) health related quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) and distress (NCCS Distress Thermometer) were evaluated based on self-reported data at five time points, from pre-surgery to 6 months. Length of hospital stay and patients’ behavior in seeking health care pre- and post-surgery were extracted from patient records. Longitudinal structural equation models were used to test the hypothesized effects over time. Statistically significant positive effects were detected for two of the four PCSQ domains (patients searching for and making use of information, and making sense of the recovery) and for the role functioning domain of the EORTC QLQ-C30. Patients in the intervention group were also more likely to contact their assigned cancer “contact nurse” (a.k.a. nurse navigator) instead of contacting a nurse on duty at the ward or visiting the emergency department. In conclusion, the overall hypothesis was not confirmed. Further research is recommended on written and oral support tools to facilitate person-centred communication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research points to challenges related to the home healthcare of older persons and to the complexity of communication. Although person-centred care has been advocated widely, there remains a need for in-depth knowledge on how to enable person-centred and supportive communication in the care of older persons. AIM The aim of this study was to explore attributes of person-centred communication between nurses and older persons being cared for in their home. METHODS A descriptive study with a qualitative approach was conducted. A data set from the COMHOME-study consisting of 77 audio-recorded home healthcare visits between registered nurses and older persons was analysed with a method for qualitative thematic analysis. RESULTS The findings indicate that the attributes of person-centred communication comprise recognising, inviting and involving older persons. To facilitate this form of communication, attentiveness and responsiveness on the part of RNs seemed significant. Person-centred communication was facilitated when the RNs used verbal expressions to emphasise and acknowledge the older persons' views and were attentive to their emotions and expressions. CONCLUSION The nurses' attentiveness and responsiveness seems important for person-centred communication with older persons. Communication skills are needed to recognise, invite and involve older persons in their care and to support their health and well-being. Implication for practice The importance of communication which facilitate a person-centred approach by nurses should be acknowledged when caring for older persons and included in education and training.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe contextual factors (CFs) used by nurses to increase placebo and to prevent nocebo effects. BACKGROUND Placebo effects have been studied in the nursing discipline, but nocebo effects still remain unexplored. Recently, a set of CFs functioning as triggers of placebo/nocebo effects has been described; however, its use in daily care has never been documented to date. DESIGN A national cross-sectional survey, according to the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys guidelines and STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE), was performed in 2016. METHODS A wide sample of Italian nurses belonging to four national associations was involved. A questionnaire based on CFs literature was developed and administered through the SurveyMonkey Software® exploring: (a) CFs definition, (b) beliefs, (c) case-by-case frequency of use, (d) circumstances of application, (e) clinical conditions where participants perceived their potential beneficial effects, (f) ethical implications and (g) communication issues with the patient. RESULTS Out of 1,411 eligible nurses, 455 answered (32.2%) and 425 questionnaires (30.1%) were valid for the analysis. A total of 211 nurses (49.6%) defined the CFs as an intervention with a possible aspecific effect; participants believed in the CFs (2.91; 95%CI 2.88-2.94), using them >2 times/month, mainly in addition to a nursing intervention to optimise clinical outcomes (n = 79; 18.6%). Psychological and physiological therapeutic effects have been perceived mainly in chronic pain (n = 259; 60.9%) and insomnia (n = 243; 57.2%). According to participants, CFs have been reported as ethically acceptable when exerting beneficial psychological effects (n = 148; 34.8%); however, 103 (24.2%) of nurses did not communicate to the patient when CFs were used. CONCLUSIONS Nurses are aware of CFs as elements to increase the placebo and prevent the nocebo effects in concomitance with evidence-based nursing interventions. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The CFs valued by nurses and experienced as effective are mainly based upon the internal quality of the nurse and the quality of the relationship between the nurse and the patient. These qualities require a large personal investment; therefore, nurses should be supported in developing these qualities since their nursing graduation.
