Grounding Your "Flight Risk" Newly Licensed Nurses

Transition into practice is plagued by personal, work, and patient-related stress leading to burnout and turnover of newly licensed nurses. Leaders must recognize transition shock and moral distress and act immediately. Nursing professional development practitioners at a healthcare organization in Illinois developed the "Flight Risk" Program to recognize, address, and escalate turnover risks as a leadership team. This resulted in retaining 47% of identified "flight risks" and contributed over $3.9 million in cost avoidance.

The impact of preceptorship on the newly qualified nurse and preceptors working in a critical care environment: An integrative literature review

BACKGROUND

Preceptorship has been found to be effective in supporting Newly Qualified Nurses (NQNs) during their transition into challenging environments, particularly in addressing issues related to confidence and anxiety. Effective preceptorship is an element of best practice and essential to support NQNs' transition into the critical care setting. However, the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and their preceptors in critical care units is yet to be completely understood.

AIM

To review the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and preceptors working in a critical care environment.

STUDY DESIGN

An integrative literature review of the literature. The review employed Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) five-stage integrative review approach.

METHODS

Three databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were searched for papers published between January 2010 and May 2022. The PRISMA framework was used to guide the search and screening. Thematic analysis was used to extract, organize and analyse the data.

RESULTS

Nine studies were included in this review. Reflective thematic analysis revealed three themes, with four related subthemes. Preceptorship has an impact on the development of the NQNs and preceptors' 'nurturing' relationship. NQNs develop their knowledge, competence and confidence when experiencing supportive preceptorship. Meanwhile, preceptors experience a combination of increased workload and opportunities for learning and professional development as a result of preceptorship.

CONCLUSION

There is evidence of the impact of preceptorship on learning and professional development for both NQNs and preceptors, but this is a complex phenomenon and further research is required to understand this area more fully.

What are the key factors influencing newly graduated nurses' preference for choosing their workplace? A best-worst scaling approach

INTRODUCTION

The literature cites many factors that influence a nurse's decision when choosing their workplace. However, it is unclear which attributes matter the most to newly graduated nurses. The study aimed to identify the relative importance of workplace preference attributes among newly graduated nurses.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

We conducted an online survey and data were collected in June 2022. A total of 1111 newly graduated nurses in South Korea participated. The study employed best-worst scaling to quantify the relative importance of nine workplace preferences and also included questions about participants' willingness to pay for each workplace preferences. The relationships between the relative importance of the workplace attribute and the willingness to pay were determined using a quadrant analysis.

RESULTS

The order according to the relative importance of workplace preferences is as follows: salary, working conditions, organizational climate, welfare program, hospital location, hospital level, hospital reputation, professional development, and the chance of promotion. The most important factor, salary, was 16.67 times more important than the least important factor, the chance of promotion, in terms of choosing workplace. In addition, working conditions and organizational climate were recognized as high economic value indicators.

CONCLUSION

Newly graduated nurses nominated better salaries, working conditions, and organizational climate as having a more important role in choosing their workplace.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The findings of this study have important implications for institutions and administrators in recruiting and retaining newly graduated nurses.

Exploring facilitators and barriers for successful transition among new Saudi graduate nurses: A qualitative study

AIM

This study aims at exploring Saudi newly graduated nurses' perspectives on the facilitators and barriers for successful transition from being a student to being a nurse.

DESIGN

A phenomenological qualitative methodology was employed.

METHODS

Focus group discussions were carried out among 35 Saudi nurses at one major university hospital in Saudi Arabia.

RESULTS

Under the theme of barriers to transition three main subthemes emerged, namely "Fear of making medical errors," "Intense Workload and Expectations," "Bullying and lack of support," while under the facilitators of transition the subthemes which emerged were "Supportive preceptor," "Training workshops," "Need for transition programs." This research found that formal and informal techniques for strengthening institutional variables and improving individual factors are critical for new graduate nurses' effective transition into professional responsibilities.
