Nurses' experiences of the attributes of the organizational citizenship behavior: a qualitative content analysis

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) among nurses, as the key human resources in healthcare systems, is of paramount importance to nursing care quality and patient outcomes. The present study was to reflect on Iranian nurses' experiences of OCB.

METHODS

This qualitative study was completed in Iran from December 2022 to October 2023. In total, 20 nurses involved in hospitals, meeting the inclusion criteria, were recruited by purposive sampling with maximum variation. The data were then collected using 20 semi-structured interviews, each one lasting 30-60 min, and finally analyzed through qualitative content analysis.

RESULTS

The data analysis revealed the nurses' experiences of OCB under nine subcategories and three main categories, including (i) "helping behavior", comprised of four subcategories of helping colleagues at work, helping colleagues outside of work, boosting morale, and creating a culture of support and appreciation, (ii) "extra-role behavior" with two subcategories of cooperation in advancing tasks, and creativity and efforts to promote services, and (iii) "contribution to professional growth and development", consisting of two subcategories of individual professional development and support for colleagues' professional development.

CONCLUSION

Nursing managers and instructors can use the study results to enhance nurses' OCB by evaluating and employing nurses, and incorporating OCB into nursing curricula and continuous training programs.

The relationship between nurses' social network degree centrality and organizational citizenship behavior: The multiple mediating effects of job satisfaction and work engagement

Background

In nursing care organizations, nurses' social networks affect their behavior and play an important role in nursing practice. This study aimed to explore the relationships among social network degree centrality, job satisfaction, work engagement and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) among nurses.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey design (one-on-one investigation) was used. The study was conducted among 254 nurses working in 10 nursing units in two hospitals in China from November 2019-February 2020. The participants completed a paper questionnaire that measured social network degree centrality, job satisfaction, work engagement and organizational citizenship behavior. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the mediating effects of job satisfaction and work engagement. SPSS 22.0 and Amos 21.0 software were used, and the significance level was set at 5% for all analyses.

Results

Social network degree centrality was positively associated with job satisfaction, work engagement and organizational citizenship behavior, and job satisfaction and work engagement had significant positive relationships with organizational citizenship behavior. In addition, social network degree centrality influenced organizational citizenship behavior through the multiple mediating effects of job satisfaction and work engagement.

Conclusions

Improving job satisfaction and work engagement can boost the positive effect of social network degree centrality on OCB.

Do broken promises matter? The effects of psychological contract breach on job embeddedness and nurses' work attitudes

Purpose

This research investigates the effects of psychological contract breach on the fit, links and sacrifice dimensions of job embeddedness as well as the mediating roles of these three subcomponents in the relationships between psychological contract breach and nurses' work attitudes.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 591 nurses from private general hospitals in northern Thailand. The hypotheses were tested and analyzed by means of a confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling and a bootstrapping procedure.

Findings

The results indicate that psychological contract breach was negatively associated with the three dimensions of job embeddedness, signifying that the fit, links and sacrifice dimensions are distinct constructs. Also, these three subcomponents mediated the relationship between psychological contract breach and loyal boosterism. Only the links and sacrifice dimensions were found to have mediating effects on turnover intention.

Research limitations/implications

Future research may consider longitudinal data to avoid potential method biases and draw causal inferences among study variables. Employing cross-cultural research in future studies would also be beneficial.

Practical implications

If possible, health care organizations should not make any promises that they cannot keep or fulfill. Fine-tuning expectation and managing communication in a timely manner may signal commitments to fulfill the contracts and minimize any potential inducement-outcome discrepancies.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature by furthering understanding of the employee-organization relationship through the lens of psychological contract and job embeddedness theories.

A Study on the Cognition and Emotion Identification of Participative Budgeting Based on Artificial Intelligence

Cognition and emotion exert a powerful influence on human behavior. Based on cognitive psychology and organizational behavior theory, this paper examines the role of cognition and emotion in participative budgeting and corporate performance using a questionnaire survey. The questionnaires were sent to 345 listed companies in China. The results support the hypothesis that human cognition and emotion have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between participative budgeting and corporate performance. Cognition and emotion can promote the effect of participative budgeting on corporate performance. Furthermore, according to the theory of artificial intelligence (AI), this paper designs an AI-based cognition and emotion identification system. This system can help managers identify the budget participants' cognitive and emotional states and undertake the interventions necessary to improving corporate performance.

Perceived Organizational Support, Coworkers’ Conflict and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Mediation Role of Work-Family Conflict

The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which perceived organizational support and coworkers’ conflict and work-family conflict play a role in the performance of three types of organizational citizenship behaviors. A cross-sectional design was used comprising a sample of 164 health support workers working in Portuguese elderly care facilities. Using structural equation model findings showed that perceived organizational support is linked with organizational citizenship behaviors, directly and indirectly, via work-family conflict. Furthermore, coworkers’ conflict was also related with organizational citizenship behaviors, directly and indirectly via work-family conflict. The linkage between perceived organizational support and coworkers’ conflict through work-family conflict can offer new insights into how to enhance organizational citizenship behaviors by active management. These findings can help elderly care organizations and their managers to design better workplace conditions where organizational support and coworkers’ conflict can be better managed allowing workers to have more control over work-family conflict and promoting organizational citizenship behaviors.
