Nurses and midwives' experiences with peer-group clinical supervision intervention: A pilot study

"People want better": a qualitative exploration of stakeholders' views on introducing well-being coordinators in the screen industry

PURPOSE

There are several factors that negatively impact the well-being of those working in the screen industry. Consequently, the need to introduce Well-being Coordinators has been identified. This study explored the experiences of participants who undertook a Well-being Coordination course tailored for the screen sector. Additionally, it sought to delve into perspectives regarding well-being within the screen industry.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were conducted. The study was guided by an interpretive descriptive approach. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse data.

FINDINGS

Five themes were identified: Opportunities and challenges working in the screen industry, co-existing with harassment, the need for change: importance of wellbeing, becoming a well-being co-ordinator: learning from the course, and the future of the well-being co-ordinator role: opportunities and challenges. The reality that cast and crew co-exist with several forms of harassment within the industry was noted. Despite this, there is hope for the future of the screen sector, particularly the positive impact the role of the Well-being Coordinator could have.

CONCLUSIONS

The experiences of professionals across the screen industry vary; however, a pervasive culture of bullying and harassment is commonplace. Through the introduction of Well-being Coordinators, there is the potential to enact positive change.

Online Group Supervision as Pedagogy: A Qualitative Inquiry of Student Mental Health Nurses' Discourses and Participation

This study explored online group clinical supervision participation, as a component of pre-registration education following mental health nursing students' clinical placements. Clinical supervision has historically been valued as a supportive strategy by healthcare professionals to develop practice and competence and prevent burnout. As many student nurses do not have access to clinical supervision via practice areas as a standardised process, their experiences of engaging in or benefitting from clinical supervision are wide-ranging. In view of this, we are identifying a theory-practice gap between theoretical knowledge and practice experience. This study incorporated a qualitative inquiry using reflexive thematic analysis and applying poststructural theoretical perspectives. Online group clinical supervision was delivered to student mental health nurses whereby focus groups followed to discuss their views, understandings and experiences of online group clinical supervision. This was against a back drop of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. Thematic synthesis identified two main areas for improving participation and pedagogy comprising; Improving Confidence and Trust in (Online) Participation and The Need for Familiarity in CS Participation and Understanding. Thematic and poststructural analysis demonstrated participants' positive outlooks on the values of clinical supervision, whilst also identifying the finer nuances of the differences in accessing group clinical supervision through an online format. This study adds to the literature on using group clinical supervision within the student mental health nurse population by identifying the benefits of group clinical supervision for student nurses. It has additionally found that the silences and inhibitions surrounding online participation are important areas for further research.

The nurse bombarded, consumed and vulnerable: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of mental health nurses' self-care at work

INTRODUCTION

Self-care is essential for nurses' wellbeing, with stress posing a major barrier. Research into self-care is often absorbed into studies of burnout or resilience. Understanding lived experiences of influences on nurses' self-care practices is essential. There is currently a paucity of literature on this topic.

AIM

To explore mental health nurses' views about what influences their ability to self-care in relation to workplace stress and the impact on their practice and work environment.

METHODS

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach was utilized. In-depth interviews explored how nurses perceived the influence of environment and relationships on self-care practices in the workplace.

RESULTS

Participants' perceptions and experiences are embodied by the theme: the nurse bombarded, comprising two subordinate themes-the nurse consumed by the intensity of work and therapeutic relationships; and feeling vulnerable from colleague relationships and feeling undervalued. Participants described conflict between workload demands and expectations and the desire to provide optimal care.

CONCLUSIONS

Stressful working environments pose major barriers to effective self-care. Feeling bombarded and vulnerable, impacts nurses' lives personally and professionally.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Mental health nurses' self-care is crucial for quality practice. Strategies to address relational, personal and environmental barriers to self-care are therefore necessary.

A metasynthesis of nurses and midwives' experiences of clinical supervision

PROBLEM

Given the current rate of burnout and attrition among nurses and midwives globally, there is a need to understand the effectiveness of supportive strategies to help retain this workforce.

BACKGROUND

Clinical supervision can help to ensure that nurses and midwives are supported and have the capacity to cope with their job demands. Yet there are no metasyntheses that provide a collective understanding of their experiences with clinical supervision.

AIM

To synthesise the experiences of nurses and midwives who have accessed clinical supervision.

METHODS

A metasynthesis was conducted by systematically searching academic databases for relevant publications; assessing their quality using an established checklist; extracting and analysing qualitative content; and synthesising key findings about the experiences of nurses and midwives regarding clinical supervision.

FINDINGS

Themes and subthemes were identified from 12 papers, including: optimal logistics; support; safety and confidentiality; improving practice through reflection; and trust in the group.

DISCUSSION

For clinicians to feel comfortable discussing their practice and workplace with the facilitator and colleagues, nurses and midwives needed to feel safe during clinical supervision and trust the process and their peers. Despite common difficulties of finding time for the sessions, clinical supervision can enhance collaboration and communication in the workplace.

CONCLUSION

Clinical supervision that adheres to group rules can provide professional support within a safe, confidential space. Having trust in peers and facilitators at the sessions can help staff develop confidence, provide personal development and professional sustenance.

Exploring sonographer emotional well-being: NHS sonographers' experience of the restorative function of professional supervision

Introduction

Following recommendations of the Francis report (2013), healthcare professional groups have formalised restorative supervision within practice in order to maintain emotional well-being among staff and provide quality of care for patients. There is a scarcity of research available on how professional supervision is utilised as a restorative device within current practice for sonographers.

Methodology

An online cross-sectional, descriptive survey was used to gain qualitative details and nominal data on sonographer experiences of professional supervision. Themes were developed through thematic analysis.

Results

A total of 56% of participants did not identify professional supervision as part of their current practice; 50% of participants felt emotionally unsupported within their work. The majority felt 'unsure' of how professional supervision would affect their working day; however, they highlighted that a restorative function would be valued equally as professional development functions of practice. The barriers to professional supervision as a restorative function demonstrate that an understanding of what sonographer needs are should be considered in approaches to professional supervision.

Conclusion

This study found that participants identify professional supervision in its formative and normative functions more commonly than its restorative functions. It also found that sonographers are found wanting of emotional support, with 50% of sonographers feeling unsupported and identifying a restorative supervision need to their working practice.

Implications for practice

The need to establish a system that supports the emotional well-being of sonographers is highlighted. This should help with retention of sonographers in a career where burnout is evidenced.

The experience of nurses participating in peer group supervision: a qualitative systematic review

AIM

This systematic review will identify, appraise, and synthesise the best available qualitative studies exploring nurses' experiences of peer group supervision. The review purpose draws from the synthesised evidence recommendations to enhance policy and implementation of peer group supervision in practice.

BACKGROUND

Clinical Supervision is increasing in acceptance as a means of professional and best practice support in nursing. Peer group supervision is a non-hierarchical, leaderless model of clinical supervision delivery and is an option for implementation by nursing management when prioritising staff support with limited resources. This systematic review will provide a synthesis of the qualitative literature regarding the nursing peer group supervision experience. Understanding the experience of peer group supervision from those participating may provide constructive insights regarding implementation of this practice to benefit both nurse and patient driven outcomes.

DESIGN

Included are peer reviewed journals focused on nurses' experiences of participating in peer group supervision. Participants are registered nurses of any designation. Qualitative articles, written in English and relating to any area of nursing practice and/or speciality are included. The standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Statement were used to guide the review. Two investigators independently screened titles, abstracts and selected full text studies describing the experience of peer group supervision. Pre-designed data extraction tools were utilised, and the review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute qualitative meta-aggregation approach with a hermeneutic interpretive analysis.

RESULTS

Results identified seven studies that met the inclusion criteria. A total of 52 findings that described the experiences of nursing peer group supervision are synthesised into eight categories. Four overarching synthesised findings resulted: 1. facilitating professional growth 2. trusting the group 3. professional learning experience and 4. shared experiences. Benefits such as sharing of experiences whilst receiving feedback and support were identified. Challenges identified related to group processes.

CONCLUSIONS

The paucity of international research into nursing peer group supervision poses challenges for nurse decision makers. Significantly, this review provides insight into the value of peer group supervision for nurses regardless of clinical context and setting. The ability to share and reflect with nursing peers enhances both personal and professional aspects of practice. The worth of the peer group supervision model varied across studies however the outcomes provided important insights into facilitating professional growth, enabling a space to share experiences and reflect, and to build teams where trust and respect develops in groups.
