An experimental investigation of the interpersonal ramifications of lateness to workplace meetings

"Sorry for Holding You Up": Surgeons' Apologies for Lateness in Clinic Settings

Doctors running late may convey a lack of respect which can impair the therapeutic relationship. This study examines how surgeons address lateness in consultations with patients. We analyzed 52 consultation recordings from a range of surgical specialties in an Australian metropolitan setting. Conversation analysis was used to analyze interactional sequences where lateness was addressed. Six sequences were identified within four recordings. The two consultations with two apologies include a surgeon and registrar apologizing in a neurosurgical consultation and a surgeon apologizing twice within a colorectal consultation. Apologies were either accepted or responded to with an account for not accepting the apology. When these accounts were made, consultations could only progress when patients accepted an explanation for lateness or the degree of complainability about lateness was reduced. The infrequent occurrence of apologies for lateness, and the way in which these sequences unfolded when they did occur, suggest that there is greater acceptability of lateness for surgeons than in ordinary social situations.

The key features of workplace meetings: Conceptualizing the why, how, and what of meetings at work

Given the focal role that group and team meetings play in shaping employees’ work lives (and schedules), the scarcity of conceptual and empirical attention to the topic in extant organizational psychology research is a major oversight that stalls scientific understanding of organizational behavior more broadly. With the explosion of meetings in recent years, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some even wonder why organizational psychology has not already figured out meetings from both a science and practice perspective. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the extant literature on the science of workplace meetings and sort the works by identifying the key features of the meeting phenomenon. The five key features of workplace meetings identified include Leading, Interacting, Managing Time, Engaging, and Relating. We couch these features within a larger framework of how meetings are the intersection of collaboration in organizations and indispensable to organizational success. Against this conceptual backdrop, we reviewed a total of 253 publications, noting opportunities for future research and discussing practical implications.

Do We Really Need Another Meeting? The Science of Workplace Meetings

Meetings are routine in organizations, but their value is often questioned by the employees who must sit through them daily. The science of meetings that has emerged as of late provides necessary direction toward improving meetings, but an evaluation of the current state of the science is much needed. In this review, we examine current directions for the psychological science of workplace meetings, with a focus on applying scientific findings about the activities that occur before, during, and after meetings that facilitate success. We conclude with concrete recommendations and a checklist for promoting good meetings, as well as some thoughts on the future of the science of workplace meetings.
