Abstract
AIMS To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis compiling data on the prevalence of bruxism in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. METHODS AND RESULTS Searches were carried out in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to identify the articles published by February 2023. Two independent reviewers, and in duplicate, employed a two-stage process to select publications. The same two reviewers performed the data extraction. Studies were included when the following eligibility criteria were met: performed in children and/or adolescents with cerebral palsy and reporting bruxism. Potentially eligible studies were read in full and excluded that: not presented numerical data on the prevalence of bruxism; not reported how the bruxism was assessed; not reported data about the cerebral palsy; and not an observational study. The risk assessment of bias was assessed by the Newcastle- Ottawa Scale. After reading the titles and abstracts of the 358 identified articles, eight articles from 1966 to 2020 were included. The main reason for not including the studies was not to report data about bruxism (59.3%), and 44.5% were excluded for not reporting data from patients with cerebral palsy. The studies were carried out in schools, university hospitals, or centers for patients with special needs (Brazil, the United States, and Egypt). The pooled prevalence of bruxism in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy was 46% (95%CI: 0.38-0.55) after removing one study. CONCLUSION The pooled prevalence of bruxism in children with cerebral palsy can be considered high since almost half of the studied population is affected by this condition. PROSPERO #CRD42021225781.

Abstract
AIMS To synthesize the oral alterations observed in children with microcephaly associated with congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS), and to compare the oral alterations of these children to a normotypic healthy controls. METHODS AND RESULTS A search was performed in six electronic databases. Observational studies published that reported oral alterations in children with CZS were selected. Two authors independently extracted data, assessed study quality, using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist tools, and the certainty of evidence, using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Twenty-one studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled crude occurrence showed 88% of increased salivation (95%CI: 82%-94%), 83% of biofilm (95%CI: 75%-91%), and 73% of bruxism (95%CI: 52%-95%). Compared to normotypic controls, children with CZS-associated microcephaly had a higher chance to have difficulty in lip sealing (OR: 18.28; 95%CI: 1.42-235.91), inadequate lingual posture at rest (OR: 13.57; 95%CI: 4.24-43.44), and delayed eruption (OR: 12.92; 95%CI: 3.42-48.78), with very low certainty. CONCLUSION There are several oral alterations found among children with CZS-associated microcephaly. They are more prone to present some of these alterations, such as difficulty in lip sealing, although with very low certainty of evidence.

Abstract
This study aims to summarize the existing evidence from primary studies in order to answer the following question: "are children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) frequently affected by bruxism?". For such, databases Web of Science, Medline (via PubMed), Lilacs, SciELO, Scopus and Wiley Online Library were used, with the keywords “Cerebral Palsy” and “Bruxism” alone and in combination, without the restriction of the publication date. The search included all articles published until May 2020. A total of 229 publications were found, of which 12 were selected, after careful analysis. Retrospective data analyses, cross-sectional studies and observational case-control studies published in English and with samples composed of children and/or adolescents were included. Case reports, literature reviews and studies whose sample consisted of adults-only were excluded. In the evaluated studies, bruxism was present in all samples with cerebral palsy. However, oral signs and symptoms resulting from this parafunction were reported only in three studies, in which the presence of dental wear and pain was evaluated. Therefore, bruxism in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy is a frequent oral condition, however, knowledge about the associated and risk factors for the occurrence of this problem in these patients remains limited.

Abstract
AIMS To describe oral manifestations in children born with microcephaly attributed to congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS). METHODS Data was collected in semiannual intervals from 2017 to 2019, by oral exams of the children and interview with caregivers at a Public Dental Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A single calibrated examiner performed clinical examinations. RESULTS Of 38 eligible children, 34 were followed-up from 12 to 30 months of age, 20 boys and 14 girls. The mean age of emergence of their first primary tooth was 12.4 months (SD = 2.9). By 30 months of age only 14.7% (n = 5) had complete primary dentition. Alteration in the sequence of tooth emergence was observed in 41.1% (n = 14). Radiographic examination demonstrated dental agenesis (14.7% n = 5). Dental developmental alterations (38.2%, n = 13), enamel defects (14.7%, n = 5), eruption cysts/hematoma (23.5%, n = 8), gingival bleeding (55.8%, n = 19), narrow palate, and bruxism (64.7%, n = 22) were also observed. No child had dental caries. CONCLUSION Children with microcephaly attributed to CZS presented oral manifestations early in life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of bruxism in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and evaluating the various factors associated METHODS: One hundred and ten adults diagnosed with CP were selected from six institutions for people with special needs. Data were collected through oral examinations using the diagnostic criteria proposed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the modified scale of Asworth RESULTS: Of the total sample, spastic tetraplegia was the most common type and half of the population presents severe intellectual disability. The prevalence of bruxism was 74,5%. Wear facets were observed in 67.9% of the sample, 59.1% of which were brilliant. There was a positive association between mixed bruxism (MB) and the spasticity classification. Through a logistic regression it was found that the risk of having MB and general bruxism (GB) is greater in individuals who have shiny wear facets. CONCLUSIONS In the present study the high prevalence of GB indicates there is an urgent need for treatment options in people with CP. More studies are needed with standardized diagnostic protocols and representative samples to evaluate the factors that influence the presence of bruxism in this population and to establish an appropriate treatment planning.

Abstract
Bruxism is a parafunctional teeth grinding activity that is attributed to be of multifactorial origin. The aim of this article is to provide a brief overview on drug-induced bruxism, commonly associated drugs, and its possible pathogenic mechanisms. Around 43 relevant publications were selected after a comprehensive search in PubMed, Cochrane library, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with appropriate keywords to collect data and compile this review. Disturbances in the neurotransmitters and their receptors in the central nervous system may play a significant role, particularly in sleep bruxism. Drugs that interfere normal secretion and function of neurotransmitters are documented to be capable of inducing bruxism. Such psychotropic drugs are being used in clinical practice chiefly for the management of mood disorders, anxiety, and depression. Although bruxism is a well-recognized side effect of certain medications, the extent of awareness about the same is still inadequate among dental professionals.

Abstract
Background In general, the prevalence of caries and other oral and dental issues is increased in patients with disabilities, such as those with cerebral palsy. Providing appropriate dental treatment at a primary dental clinic for patients with cerebral palsy and intellectual disability, among other conditions, is challenging. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the longevity and investigate the related prognostic factors of fixed prostheses in patients with cerebral palsy. Methods The records of 36 cerebral palsy patients were used for collecting and analyzing data. A total of 155 prostheses made from metal alloys were finally included in this study. Annual failure rates were calculated; patient‐ and tooth‐related variables associated with prosthesis failure were assessed by a multivariate Cox‐regression analysis and frailty models to introduce random effects. Results The 10‐year prosthesis survival rate was 62% and the 20‐year survival rate was 36%. In terms of prosthesis‐related variables, the type of prosthesis had a significant effect, and the hazard ratio of fixed partial dentures was 2.32 times that of single‐unit crowns. In terms of patient‐related variables, the presence of epilepsy had a significant effect on survival, and the hazard ratio for comorbid epilepsy was 3.76 times that for those without comorbid epilepsy. Conclusions Our findings suggested that fixed prostheses placed in patients with cerebral palsy might have a particularly low survival rate in cases with comorbid epilepsy. It might also be important to consider the type and/or design of the prosthesis carefully to ensure a better prognosis.

Abstract
Bruxism is a repetitive jaw‐muscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. It can occur during sleep, indicated as sleep bruxism, or during wakefulness, indicated as awake bruxism. Exogenous risk indicators of sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism are, among others, medications and addictive substances, whereas also several medications seem to have the potential to attenuate sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism. The objective of this study was to present a narrative literature on medications and addictive substances potentially inducing or aggravating sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism and on medications potentially attenuating sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism. Literature reviews reporting evidence or indications for sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism as an adverse effect of several (classes of) medications as well as some addictive substances and literature reviews on medications potentially attenuating sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism were used as starting point and guidelines to describe the topics mentioned. Additionally, two literature searches were established on PubMed. Three types of bruxism were distinguished: sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and non‐specified bruxism. Generally, there are insufficient evidence‐based data to draw definite conclusions concerning medications and addictive substances inducing or aggravating sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism as well as concerning medications attenuating sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism. Abstract
Objective Cerebral palsy (CP) includes disturbances in muscular control caused by perinatal brain injury. Masticatory muscle involvement hampers functions such as chewing and talking. Bruxism and temporomandibular disorders are overrepresented. Neuromuscular blocks with botulinum toxin type A (BTX‐A) may alleviate problems due to muscular hyperactivity. The aim was to evaluate masticatory muscle BTX‐A injections in subjects with CP and bruxism. Methods A prospective, parallel, randomized, placebo‐controlled, and double‐blind trial in 12 patients with CP was performed. End points were alterations in objective and subjective oral capacities after two BTX‐A or corresponding placebo injections. Matched, healthy references were also evaluated. Results The reference group demonstrated stronger and more efficient oral functions compared with the CP group. Subjective and objective oral capacities appeared to vary considerably between CP patients and also over time in this patient group and were poorly correlated. No significant effect of BTX‐A compared with placebo on outcome variables was observed at group level, but continued treatment with BTX‐A was requested by the majority of the patients. Conclusion The evidence is unable to support the use of BTX‐A for the treatment of affected masticatory muscles in CP, but the findings are inconclusive in certain respects. Larger, more homogeneous groups of CP patients need to be evaluated in future trials.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep bruxism (SB) is a frequent condition in children. Its pathophysiology involves certain neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, noradrenalin, histamine), but the environment seems to influence its occurrence. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SB in children and their biological mothers, relating it to stress through a case control study. Methods and Material The group of cases (SG) was composed of 48 subjects, including 24 children with SB and their mothers, and the control group (CG), formed by 36 children without SB and their mothers. The chi-Square test was used and the probability was computed with 95% confidence intervals (p<0.05). Results: The prevalence of probable awareness of SB in children was 22.6%, while it was 30.8% among caregivers. There were no significant associations between the socio-demographic variables and SB. There was an increase in the occurrence of SB in children (p=0.02) when their caregiver also had this condition. Conclusions Psychological stress did not establish a significant relationship with SB in either the child or their mothers.

Abstract
AIM Identify whether the degree of oral motor performance is related to the presence of teeth grinding and maximal bite force values in children with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS Ninety-five spastic cerebral palsy children with and without teeth grinding, according to caregivers' reports, were submitted to a comprehensive oral motor performance evaluation during the feeding process using the Oral Motor Assessment Scale. Maximal bite force was measured using an electronic gnathodynamometer. RESULTS The teeth grinding group (n = 42) was younger, used anticonvulsant drugs, and was more frequently classified within the subfunctional oral motor performance category. Teeth grinding subfunctional spastic cerebral palsy children presented lower values of maximal bite force. The functional groups showing the presence or absence of teeth grinding presented higher values of maximal bite force compared with the subfunctional groups. CONCLUSION In spastic cerebral palsy children, teeth grinding is associated with the worse oral motor performance.
