Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the levels of functional impairments, discomfort and satisfaction experienced by those treated with full-mouth customized lingual appliances (Lingual appliances), full-mouth self-ligating bracket (Labial appliances), or upper lingual and lower labial appliances (Mixed appliances) using questionnaires. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients within one year of the end of treatment were included in the survey and given a questionnaire concerning different kinds of discomfort and difficulties during the treatment process. The questionnaires focused on the following aspects including speech difficulty, pain (lip, cheek or tongue), difficulty in chewing, difficulty in tooth brushing and overall aesthetics and comfortability. Ordinary one-way ANOVA Tukey's multiple comparison tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 115 patients participated in the study. In terms of functional impairments and discomfort, the rate and degree of speech difficulty was significantly higher in the Lingual appliances Group than that in the Labial appliances Group. But there was no difference among the three groups for difficulty in chewing and tooth brushing. Both lingual and labial appliances caused a similar level of overall pain, however, those treated with lingual appliances experienced more tongue pain, and those treated with labial appliances experienced more cheek and lip pain. The most common sites of irritation were the tongue lateral and tongue tip in the Lingual appliances Group, tongue lateral and cheek in the Mixed appliances Group, and cheek and lower lip in the Labial appliances Group. In total, patients gave highest scores to mixed appliances for comfortability and lowest scores to labial appliances for aesthetics when it came to satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Lingual and labial appliances caused similar level of overall pain. Taking into account the overall comfortability, aesthetics and cost, the mixed appliances may be suitable for some patients who have aesthetic and comfort pursuits.

Abstract
PURPOSE Evaluate which factors compromise patients' quality of life who have undergone orthognathic surgery in the pre and postoperative period of 2 years. STUDY DESIGN In this longitudinal prospective study, 46 adult patients undergoing orthognathic surgery were evaluated. The primary outcome variable was quality of life, assessed using the overall score of the orthognathic quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) in the pre and 2-year postoperative periods. The predictor variables were axis I (temporomandibular dysfunction) and axis II (psychosocial) RDC/TMD diagnoses, assessed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively; profile, asymmetry, and open bite preoperatively; and orthodontic treatment active 2 years postoperatively. The covariables were age and sex. The OQLQ score was compared preoperatively and postoperatively using the Wilcoxon test and with the other variables using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis tests. RESULTS Preoperatively, higher OQLQ scores were associated with myofascial pain (P = .012) and severe depression (P = .030). Two years after surgery, there was an improvement in overall OQLQ (P < .001), myofascial pain (P = .012) and chronic pain (P = .001). However, higher OQLQ scores were associated with individuals who had myofascial pain (P = .012), active orthodontic treatment (P = .007), and other nonspecific physical symptoms including pain (NSPSIP) (P = .049). CONCLUSION Quality of life was affected preoperatively by myofascial pain and depression, and although it improved significantly 2 years after surgery, it continued to be affected by myofascial pain, NSPSIP, and active orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The application of direct current can have a significant impact on the rate of tooth movement and surrounding periodontal ligament collagen turnover. This study aims to provide insight into the optimal characteristics of applied current to achieve enhanced tissue response. METHOD Eighteen male Wistar rats were divided into three groups (I, II, and III). Split mouth design was used, and each side was allocated into an experimental group or control group. Experimental sides of groups I, II, and III received 20, 10, and 15 μA of current (15 min, twice daily for 3 days). Both the experimental and control groups receive an orthodontic force via the NiTi closed coil spring. The amount of tooth movement was determined daily. Immunohistochemistry slides were scored using the immunoreactive scoring (IRS) system for collagen types I and III. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc test were used to analyse the rate of tooth movement, while Mann-Whitney test was used to analyse IRS distribution between control and experimental groups. RESULTS Compared with the control group, there was a statistically significant difference in tooth movement in all the experimental groups, with group 3 showing the maximum rate on days 2 and 3. This was supported by immunoreactive scores for both collagen types I and III. CONCLUSIONS After 72 hours, the expression of collagen types 1 and 3 increased significantly for group III. This finding was in harmony with the rate of tooth movement, which was maximum for group 3 (15 μA) as compared to other groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE Here we evaluated how orthognathic surgery impacted oral health-related quality of life among patients with dentofacial deformities in the immediate postoperative period and during ≥2 years of follow-up, using the OHIP-14-NL questionnaire. METHODS This prospective study included 86 patients. Quality of life was assessed using the Dutch version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14-NL) preoperatively (T0, baseline), over 7 days postoperatively (T1-T7), and at 4 weeks (T8), 6 months (T9), 1 year (T10), and ≥2 years (T11) postoperatively. Total OHIP score was determined for each patient. Lower OHIP scores indicated higher oral health-related quality of life. Patients also answered questions regarding self-care, discomfort, and experienced pain at all time-points, starting from T1. RESULTS Compared to baseline (T0), median OHIP scores were significantly higher from T1 to T8. However, at T9 to T11, OHIP scores were significantly lower compared to baseline (T0) (p < 0.01). OHIP scores were not correlated with gender, age, or blood loss; and did not significantly differ according to surgery type or surgery indication (p > 0.01). Pain scores were positively correlated with OHIP scores for all time-points, except T6 and T10. Pain was not correlated with sex, age, blood loss, surgery duration, surgery indication, or surgery type. Compared to at T1, pain was significantly decreased at T9-T11. CONCLUSION Among patients who underwent orthognathic surgery, oral health-related quality of life was decreased in the immediate postoperative period, but improved at ≥6 months postoperatively. The improvement was significant 2 years after orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to investigate the relationship between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and emotional distress (ED), including anxiety and depression, in orthodontic patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 603 orthodontic patients, consisting of 401 females (66.5%) with a mean age of 24.15 ± 7.72 and 202 males (33.5%) with a mean age of 24.16 ± 7.72. A questionnaire containing questions of demographic information, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Huaxi emotional-distress index (HEI) was employed to assess OHRQoL and ED. According to the HEI score, the respondents were divided into ED group (HEI > 8) and non-ED group (HEI ≤ 8). Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney test and logistic regression analysis with the significance level set at p < 0.05. Results The prevalence of poor OHRQoL and ED of the study sample was 28.4% and 19.57%, respectively. There was a significantly higher prevalence of ED among poor OHRQoL patients (35.67%) compared to those with good OHRQoL (13.19%) (p < 0.001). Poor OHRQoL and risky drinking behavior addressed higher significant correlation with ED patients than non-ED patients (p < 0.05). There were no statistical differences in other factors such as gender, age, and appliance type (p > 0.05). Poor OHRQoL orthodontic patients were at a higher risk of suffering from anxiety and depression compared to those with good OHRQoL (age-risky drinking behavior-sex-adjusted: OR = 4.00; all p < 0.001). Conclusion Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is related to emotional stress. Namely, patients with poor OHRQoL are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. As a result, orthodontists should consistently assess the emotional well-being and OHROoL of patients over the treatment course for better treatment outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body image and psychosocial functioning represent central challenges during adolescence and early adulthood. Malocclusion, defined as an irregularity in the alignment of the teeth, is known to negatively influence psychological outcomes. The current study aimed to elucidate the role of malocclusion, together with age, gender, and dental class, in body image and psychological functioning. METHODS A total of 126 participants aged from 12 to 19 years old (mean: 15.87, SD: 2.35, female participants: 52.4%, male participants: 47.6%) were recruited. Participants were visited at the University Hospital of Messina, Italy, and completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Body Image Concern Inventory (I-BICI), and the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ). RESULTS Significant correlations were found between age, dental class, the BICI, and the PIDAQ. In particular, age showed a positive and significant correlation with PIDAQ-total score. The correlations between occlusal status and the BICI variables were all significant and positive. All correlations between occlusal status and the PIDAQ variables were all significant and positive, except for dental self-confidence. The correlations between the variables of the PIDAQ and BICI instruments were all significant and positive, except for dental self-confidence, where the directions were significant and negative. Moreover, age, gender, and occlusal status predicted BICI and PIDAQ scores. Age was a positive predictor for PIDAQ self-confidence, gender for BICI and PIDAQ total scores, along with dysmorphic symptoms, social impact, psychological impact, and aesthetic concerns. Several significant gender differences were highlighted by the analyses, with higher scores in the female group on all the BICI variables, except symptom interference, and all the PIDAQ variables, except dental self-confidence. CONCLUSIONS Malocclusion appeared to play a central role in the psychological, representational, and psychosocial life of the participants. This research suggests that malocclusion and dental issues influence the psychological, representational, and psychosocial life of adolescents. Further research is required to examine the psychological impact of dental problems.

Abstract
Malocclusion may affect interpersonal relationships, self-esteem (SE), and psychological well-being, weakening patients' psychological and social activities. Several studies investigated the effect of orthodontic treatment on these social and psychological aspects, such as SE. However, the direct relationship between SE and orthodontic treatment has not yet been confirmed. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the existing evidence in the literature concerning the influences of orthodontic treatment on patients' SE systematically and critically. An electronic search in the following databases was done in September 2022: PubMed®, Web of Science™, Scopus®, Embase®, GoogleTM Scholar, Cochrane Library databases, Trip, and OpenGrey. Then, the reference list of each candidate study was checked for any potentially linked papers that the electronic search might not have turned up. Inclusion criteria were set according to the population/intervention/comparison/outcome/study design (PICOS) framework. For the data collection and analysis, two reviewers extracted data separately. The risk of bias 2 (RoB-2) and the risk of bias in non-randomized studies (ROBINS-I) tools were used to assess the risk of bias for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, respectively. The grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) approach was employed to evaluate the quality of the evidence for each finding. Sixteen studies (five RCTs, seven cohorts, and four cross-sectional) were included in this review. Unfortunately, the results could not be pooled into a meta-analysis. Only six studies have reported an increase in SE after orthodontic treatment (P<0.05 in these studies). No agreement between the included studies was observed regarding the influence of fixed orthodontic treatment, gender, or age on SE. The quality of evidence supporting these findings ranged from very low to low. There is low evidence indicating that fixed orthodontic treatment can improve patients' SE. In addition, unclear data are available about the influence of patients' gender and age on SE after orthodontic treatment. Therefore, high-quality RCTs are required to develop stronger evidence about this issue.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund Aufgrund der aktuell noch geringen Datenlage war es Ziel
dieser Studie, den Einfluss der Dauer einer kieferorthopädischen
Behandlung auf die mundgesundheitsbezogene Lebensqualität (MLQ) zu
untersuchen.
Methode Die beobachtende, prospektive Längsschnittstudie erfolgte
mit der deutschen Basisversion des Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-G14)
im Zeitraum von 2008–2018. Die MLQ wurde zu drei Zeitpunkten
(T1, T2, T3) bei 598 Patient*innen
innerhalb ihrer kieferorthopädischen Behandlung erhoben und die
Ergebnisse statistisch analysiert. Ein durchschnittlicher Anstieg
(∆OHIP-G14) von>2,00 Punkten wurde als klinisch relevant
(Minimal Important Difference, MID) und Zeichen einer herabgesetzten
mundgesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität definiert.
Ergebnisse Von initial 598 eingeschlossenen Patient*innen
füllten 79 ProbandInnen die Fragebögen zu allen drei Zeitpunkten
vollständig aus und konnten in die Studie aufgenommen werden. Das
Durchschnittsalter lag zu Beginn der Behandlung bei 11,5 Jahren
(SD=3,3), am Ende der Behandlung bei 16,3 Jahren (SD=3,1). Die
durchschnittliche Behandlungsdauer betrug 4,7 Jahre (SD=2,3). Ein
Vergleich der erreichten Summenwerte zu den Zeitpunkten T1,
T2, T3 der ernannten Subgruppen (Geschlechter,
Altersgruppen, Behandlungsapparatur und -zeitraum) untereinander zeigte in
keiner der Gruppen signifikante Unterschiede (Mann-Whitney-U-Test,
Kruskal-Wallis-Test, Chi-Quadrat-Test p<0,05). Ein Vergleich der
Gesamtwerte der jeweiligen Zeitpunkte zeigte eine klinisch
(∆OHIP-G14>2,00) und statistisch signifikante Abnahme der MLQ
während der initialen Behandlungsphase (T1 vs. T2,
p<0,001). Die Verbesserung der MLQ am Ende der Behandlung (T2
vs. T3) war statistisch nicht signifikant (p=0,128) und hatte
keine klinische Auswirkung (MID ∆OHIP-G14<2,00). Weitere
Analysen der Behandlungsdauer und der OHIP-Summenwerte ergaben zu keinem
Zeitpunkt signifikante Abhängigkeit oder Korrelation zwischen
Behandlungsdauer und MLQ (β2=− 0,078,
β3=0,191, multiple lineare Regression,
p=0,05; r2=0,073, r3=0,103,
Spearman Korrelation, p=0,05).
Schlussfolgerung Im Vergleich zu T1 war die MLQ während
der Behandlung sowohl zu T2 als auch T3 leicht
herabgesetzt. Es kann jedoch festgestellt werden, dass der Durchschnitt der
erhobenen Summenwerte zu allen drei Zeitpunkten der Befragung (T1,
T2 und T3) im Normbereich der gesunden
Allgemeinbevölkerung lag. Hinsichtlich der Kernfrage dieser Studie
konnte kein Zusammenhang zwischen Behandlungsdauer und MLQ gezeigt werden. Das
Anstreben eines guten Behandlungsergebnisses im Rahmen einer differenzierten
kieferorthopädischen Therapie sollte daher nach Möglichkeit
einem raschen Abschluss der Behandlung vorangestellt werden.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to study the aesthetic effect of autologous fat transplantation in frontotemporal depression filling as well as the influence on the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES) score of patients. Methods A total of 100 patients with frontotemporal depression admitted to the outpatient department of burn and plastic surgery in our hospital were selected as the observation group, and all of them received autologous fat transplantation. The filling effect of patients in the observation group was discussed. Simultaneously, 50 volunteers were selected as the control group to compare the SCL-90 and SES scores of the observation group and the control group. Result ① A total of 100 patients with frontotemporal depression were treated with autologous fat transplantation, and the secondary autologous fat transplantation rate was 10%; two cases of fat absorption occurred during the 12-month follow-up after surgery; on the 7th day, 6 months, and 12 months after the operation, the satisfaction rate of the patients who visited the doctor was 96.00%, 97%, and 92.00%; the satisfaction rate of the plastic surgeon was 94.00%, 96%, and 90.00%; the satisfaction rate of the third party was 96.00%, 98%, and 92.00%. ② The preoperative scores of somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoia, and psychotic factor scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The scores of somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoia, and psychotic factor scores in the observation group at 6 months after the operation were lower than those before operation (P < 0.05). The preoperative SES score of the observation group (28.51 ± 9.81) was significantly lower than that of the control group (32.47 ± 5.39) (P < 0.05). The SES score (34.17 ± 9.81) in the observation group at 6 months after the operation was significantly higher than that before the operation (P < 0.05). Conclusion The aesthetic effect of autologous fat transplantation in frontotemporal depression filling is good and safe. Simultaneously, it can improve the mental health and self-esteem of patients and has high clinical value.

Abstract
Background Anxiety and depression are common psychological problems in orthodontic patients whose diet habits and oral health status change frequently during treatment. However, relationships between anxiety and depression, digestive tract condition, and impaired oral health-related quality of life remain unknown. Materials and methods In this study, clinical assessments, including anxiety, depression, digestive tract condition, and oral health-related quality of life, were collected from 769 outpatients in the orthodontic department using three self-reported questionnaires. Correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationships among different clinical assessments. A chained mediation analysis model was further conducted to explore the direct and indirect effects of these various clinical factors. Results Changes in digestive tract conditions were positively correlated with the psychological status and oral health-related quality of life. Anxiety and depression partially mediated the relationship between them, and the indirect effect was 0.68 (30%), of which the mediation effect of anxiety accounted for 56%. Conclusion Anxiety and depression mediate the relationship between gastrointestinal conditions and oral health. In particular, anxiety seems to play a significant mediating role. Our findings indicate that psychological status must be paid more attention to in future clinical practices and supervision for digestive tract symptoms of orthodontic patients.

Abstract
Objective The eating problems and changes in the diet and dietary intake of patients under orthodontic treatment are of great importance, and the available studies on this topic are mostly qualitative. Thus, this study aimed to assess the oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) and the eating‐related quality of life (ERQoL) of patients under fixed orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods This prospective study evaluated 105 patients (65 males, 40 females) with a mean age of 26 ± 1.1 years, who required fixed orthodontic treatment. All participants filled out the Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 (OHIP‐14) questionnaire before treatment (T0), and at 1 (T1), 3 (T2), and 6 (T3) months after treatment, and the ERQoL questionnaire at 1 (T1), 3 (T2), and 6 (T3) months after treatment. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance with Greenhouse–Geisser and Huynh‐Feldt corrections and Bonferroni test for pairwise comparisons (α = .05). Results The OHIP‐14 total score increased at T1 and decreased at T2 and T3, with significant differences between all four time points (p < .001). The ERQoL total score decreased over time, and significant differences were noted between all three time points (p < .001). No significant difference existed in OHRQoL or ERQoL with regard to gender at any time point (p > .05). Conclusion The reduction in OHRQoL due to fixed orthodontic treatment was temporary and improved over time. The eating problems also decreased with time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the impact of orthognathic surgery for dental facial deformities on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the immediate postoperative period up to at least 1 year after surgery. STUDY DESIGN This prospective study evaluated data from 85 patients. OHRQoL was assessed using the Dutch version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14NL) preoperatively (T0), each day for 7 days postoperatively (T1-T7) and 4 weeks (T8), 6 months (T9), and at least 1 year (T10) after surgery. The total OHIP score was calculated for each patient, with higher OHIP scores indicating a worse impact on oral health. Patients also completed an extra questionnaire about self-care, discomfort, and experienced pain (rated on a 10-point scale) in the postoperative period (T1-T10). RESULTS The mean OHIP score increased sharply at T1 compared to T0 but decreased significantly in the first postoperative week. The mean OHIP score at T8 was still higher than before surgery. However, at T9 and T10, the mean OHIP score was significantly lower than at T0 (P < .05). No significant difference in OHIP score was found between gender, age, type of surgery, and indication for surgery. Pain significantly decreased from T6 to T0. The OHIP and pain scores significantly positively correlated at every time point except T9. CONCLUSION The findings indicate that OHRQoL is reduced from baseline in the immediate postoperative period but improves over time. By 1 year, OHRQoL improves significantly after orthognathic surgery in patients with dentofacial deformities.

Abstract
Objective The treatment protocol in the modern health care paradigm has shifted considerably towards enhancing the quality of life in the last decade. This is particularly important in cosmetic and elective treatments, and hence the interest in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) also has increased. OHRQoL always been measured by endogenous, functional, social, or psychological determinants. Self-esteem (SE) is one of the internal factors that affect the perception of malocclusion and hence OHRQoL before and after treatment. The purpose of this review is to assess whether there exists any correlation between the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life, Self-esteem (SE) in patients following orthodontic treatment. Methods A literature search was confined to the English language using Medical Subject Heading terms (MeSH) in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Ovid® covering the period from January 1, 1951 to May 15, 2020. Search in Google Scholar, grey literature, and hand search on cross-references was performed to find additional data. The studies found to be suitable were selected based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of assessment and risk of bias for the included studies were evaluated independently by two invigilators utilizing "The Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing the risk of bias" and "Modified version of the Newcastle Ottawa scale" for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and non-randomized trials respectively. Results A total of 7688 studies were retrieved from all the sources. After screening all the titles and excluding the duplicates, 28 studies were finally included for text review, and all of them were fit for quality appraisal. The design of the final studies included comprised of 3 RCTs, 14 cohort studies, 9 cross-sectional studies, and 2 case-control studies. Conclusion There is moderate evidence to show that fixed orthodontic treatment improves OHRQoL and SE in children. OHRQoL also increased in adolescents and adults. However, there is a weak correlation between SE and OHRQoL. More evidence-based studies are needed to analyze the relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Malocclusion Impact Questionnaire (MIQ) into Chinese and to assess the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the MIQ (MIQ/C) for use among adolescents with malocclusion in China. MATERIALS AND METHOD First, the MIQ/C was developed according to international guidelines. Then, the MIQ/C was filled out by 536 adolescents between 10 and 16 years of age. This study used exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability to evaluate the psychometric properties of the MIQ/C. RESULTS Following EFA, three domains were extracted, accounting for 65.950% of the total variance. The CFA results showed that the fit indices of each factor in the three-factor model all reached the standard (chi-square/DF = 2.591, GFI = 0.919, TLI = 0.926, CFI = 0.928, RMSEA = 0.076). The scale evidenced a good relationship with the two global questions, indicating good convergent validity. The Cronbach alpha value and the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) value of the MIQ/C were 0.929 and 0.893, respectively. CONCLUSION The MIQ/C demonstrated good reliability and validity and can be further studied and applied in Chinese adolescents with malocclusion. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The MIQ/C can be applied to assess the psychosocial impact of malocclusion among Chinese adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orthodontic braces have become symbols of wealth and fashion accessories in some parts of the world. However, there is a scarcity of information about the effects of fashion braces on various aspects of quality of life. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects of fashion braces on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out with data collection from a Google form questionnaire distributed in Saudi Arabia via various forms of social media over a period of 4 months. OHRQoL was assessed using the validated Arabic version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The fashion braces group included respondents who had braces installed for fashion purposes only. Therapeutic braces group included subjects who were wearing braces to treat any malocclusion problems. Control group included subjects who did not have any kind of braces. People who had previously completed orthodontic treatments were excluded from the study. The negative impacts were divided into seven domains and a total OHIP score was calculated. Statistical analyses and data illustration were performed with SPSS v25 (IBM, NY). RESULTS A total of 1141 people voluntarily participated in the study. More than 60% of the participants were in the control group while 33.7% had conventional braces for therapeutic reasons and 3.4% had fashion braces. Sociodemographic distributions varied among the groups, with the majority of the fashion braces group having education below the university level and family incomes less than average. There were significant group differences in OHIP domains. Physical pain was the most frequently reported complaint by all subjects and was the highest in the therapeutic braces group. People with therapeutic braces reported significantly higher functional limitation and physical disability than the controls. Fashion braces group reported significantly lower psychological discomfort and disability, social disability and handicap compared to control groups. CONCLUSIONS The illustrated effects of fashion braces on OHRQoL suggest the need to study the role of social media and educate the public on the use of braces to minimize the negative effects experienced by individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The professional Quality of Life Scale (QLS) can provide a valuable reference for the diagnosis of visual function anomalies. In the present study, we aimed to design a novel QLS to specially quantify the life quality of schoolchildren with nonstrabismic binocular vision anomalies (NSBVAs) in China. METHODS The novel QLS, named QOL-CVF20, was established based on classical vision-related scales and the administration of the questionnaire to 116 schoolchildren with NSBVAs and 100 healthy schoolchildren in China. The diagnostic reference value between QOL-CVF20 and VF-14 was evaluated on the questionnaires to 240 schoolchildren with NSBVAs and 238 healthy schoolchildren. RESULTS All the subjects could complete the QOL-CVF20 questionnaires independently. QOL-CVF20 had good structural validity, content validity, and discriminant validity, when it was applied in Chinese schoolchildren. The average score of the NSBVA group was significantly lower than that of the control group (49.0 ± 6.9 vs. 69.7 ± 6.7, respectively; P < 0.01). Moreover, the average score of cured NSBVA schoolchildren after treatment (61.8 ± 22.6) was significantly improved (P < 0.01). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that QOL-CVF20 reflected strong separation between the NSBVA and healthy groups (AUC = 0.901). Meanwhile, QOL-CVF20 could detect individuals with NSBVAs with specificity of 0.847 and sensitivity of 0.846. The critical value of 58.50 in QOL-CVF20 could be effectively applied for quality of life assessment in schoolchildren with NSBVAs. CONCLUSIONS QOL-CVF20 could quantify the life quality of schoolchildren with NSBVAs and might be served as a valuable reference for early diagnosis and clinical evaluation of NSBVAs.

Abstract
Esthetics in the oro-facial region are important for perceived oral health and a common reason for treatment of discoloured, missing or crowded teeth. As one of the fundamental bricks of a patient's oral health, changes in the domain of oro-facial esthetics resides within the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of an individual. Four main dimensions, oral function, oro-facial pain, oro-facial appearance and psychosocial impact, are suggested to cover the concept of OHRQoL. The aim of this systematic review was to map the impact from oral conditions with principal impact on the oro-facial appearance dimension of OHRQoL (PROSPERO: CRD42017064033). Publications were included if they reported Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) mean or median domain scores for patients with esthetic treatment need relating to tooth wear, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, frontal tooth loss or tooth whitening. A search in PubMed (Medline), EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL and PsycINFO 8 June 2017 and updated 14 January 2019, identified 2,104 abstracts. After screening of abstracts, 1607 articles were reviewed in full text and 33 articles included. These 33 articles reported OHIP-data for 9409 patients grouped in 63 patient populations. Median oro-facial appearance impact scores on a standardised 0-8 scale, for populations with treatment need relating to tooth wear, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, frontal tooth loss and tooth whitening, ranged from 0.13 for tooth wear to 3.04 for tooth whitening populations. In conclusion, a moderate impact for the oro-facial appearance dimension of OHRQoL was found in patients with different conditions with esthetically related treatment need.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess whether dental aesthetics had a different impact on the psychosocial domains of adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) as compared with healthy peers. Fifty JIA patients and eighty controls aged between 13 and 17 years were enrolled. The Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) was administered along with tools for the self-assessment of malocclusion and self-esteem. An objective evaluation of malocclusion severity was performed through a clinical evaluation with the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The sample was divided according to the DAI stages of malocclusion severity; a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to assess whether there was a difference in the studied variables according to the malocclusion and the presence of JIA. The results showed no interaction between the malocclusion severity and the presence of JIA in all analyzed variables (all p > 0.05). According to the DAI stages, the Dental Self-Confidence domain of the PIDAQ and the Perception of Occlusion Scale showed statistically significant differences only within the controls (p = 0.027 and p = 0.014, respectively). Therefore, JIA adolescents seem to be less concerned about their dental aesthetics compared with healthy peers, and clinicians should take particular care when proposing orthodontic treatments aiming only to improve dental aesthetics.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to develop and test a moderated mediation model that was able to describe the relationships between oral health-related attitudes and behaviors, oral health status (OHS), and oral health-related quality of life. The hypothesized relations corresponded to research questions such as "is a person's oral health predicted by the actions that person takes in order to prevent oral health conditions?" and "do individuals with better oral health also have higher levels of oral health-related quality of life?". MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional correlational study with selected predictor variables was conducted in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, among 191 participants, enrolled in the fourth and sixth years of study at the Dentistry School of the Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Cluj-Napoca. Participants completed the Hiroshima University Dental Behavior Inventory (HUDBI) questionnaire targeting specific behavior and attitude with respect to their dental self-care, Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) short questionnaire for measuring oral health-related quality of life, and the current OHS was assessed objectively using Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth/Surfaces (DMFT) index. Statistical analyses were done using structural equation modeling software. RESULTS Our research showed relevant associations between HUDBI, DMFT, and OHIP. The relationship between HUDBI and OHIP was mediated by DMFT. Furthermore, HUDBI worked as a moderator between DMFT and OHIP. Thus, our study revealed a case for moderated mediation, which is usually ignored in similar research. CONCLUSION The "straightforward" causality between oral health-related behavior and the actual OHS must be considered with caution, as well as their impact on the oral health-related quality of life. Further research is needed to investigate the interaction between variables, the strength of the interrelations and the magnitude of their interactions, and the confidence that can be placed in these measurements, with respect to the general population and/or those lacking domain-specific education.
