Comparison of the Effect of Addition of Cyanoacrylate, Epoxy Resin, and Gum Arabic on Surface Hardness of Die Stone

A cyanoacrylate/triethyl citrate/nanosilica-based closure glue with wet-adhesion capability for treatment of superficial varicose veins

Varicose veins in legs are common in clinics. Currently, medical adhesive-based, minimally invasive endovenous occlusion is used to treat them. However, the most common cyanoacrylate medical adhesives do not perform well when used under blood/wet conditions. In particular, poor adhesion, short curing time, and high heat release greatly limit their clinical use. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a composite system composed of butyl-cyanoacrylate, triethyl citrate, and nanosilica that exhibits a blood/wet-adhesion capability to serve as a new sealing glue. Hydrophobic triethyl citrate groups displace boundary waters while also protecting cyanoacrylate monomers from undergoing rapid polymerization. Nanosilica increases viscosity, which contributes to in situ extrusion molding and retention. An optimal formulation, FAL-006, exhibited good physical and chemical properties in vitro. The performed additional safety assays indicated that FAL-006 has good biocompatibility. The closure efficiency of FAL-006 in vivo was evaluated in both a rat abdominal aortic closure model and in a sheep lower limb venous closure model. Taken together, these results indicate that FAL-006 exhibits promising potential for use in clinical applications. Furthermore, this study provides a new strategy for designing underwater adhesive agents for additional clinical applications, and a strategy for constructing other biomaterials needed for use under wet conditions.

Effect of Adding Silica Nanoparticles on the Physicochemical Properties, Antimicrobial Action, and the Hardness of Dental Stone Type 4

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of adding silica nanoparticles on the physicochemical properties, antimicrobial action, and the hardness of dental stone type 4. Dental stone type 4 powder was physically mixed with nanoparticle powder at weight percentages (0, 0.5, 1, and 2 percent). The required amount of powder was added to water according to the manufacturer's instructions. The prepared set materials were subjected to the physicochemical studies; Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was taken up to investigate the functional groups and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to evaluate the crystallinity. Also, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of the prepared samples. Agar diffusion test was carried out for the prepared samples against the Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) to test the average growth inhibition zones. Finally, the Vickers surface hardness test was performed for each group using a hardness tester. The adding silica nanoparticles to dental stone type 4 increased the diameter of inhibition zones for the groups in both bacteria significantly (p < 0.05). The results showed that adding silica nanoparticles to dental stone type 4 increased the diameter of inhibition zones for the groups in both bacteria significantly (p < 0.0001). There was a significant difference between all groups and the 0% group in both bacteria (p < 0.0001). Besides, the adding of silica nanoparticles to dental stone type 4 increased the surface hardness significantly (p = 0.0057) without any effect on physicochemical properties. The 0% and the 0.5% groups had significant differences with the 2% group (p = 0.0046 and p = 0.0205 respectively). Then, at least 2% silica nanoparticles are needed for a significant increase. Clinical trials are needed to enlarge for dental stone type 4 containing silica nanoparticles in the future.

Preparation and characterization of gelatin/sericin/carboxymethyl chitosan medical tissue glue

Background:

The development and application of medical glue has been continuously expanding and advancing. However, there are few glues that combine low-cost with excellent biocompatibility.

Methods:

We have prepared a medical tissue glue using a gelatin (Gel), sericin (SS) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) blend solution, cross-linked with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC). The combination’s characteristics and microstructure morphology were observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Bond strength tests were used to measure the bond strength of the glue. To assay blood compatibility, a hemolytic test, dynamic coagulation test and platelet adherence test were also investigated. Further, the cellular behavior of L-929 and a systemic acute toxicity test on the Gel/SS/CMCS tissue glue were also investigated by MTT and H&E staining.

Results:

Characterization analysis showed that there was stable binding between raw materials, forming an amide bond with homogeneous holes. The bond strength of the tissue glue reached 2.50 ± 0.04 N in 10 minutes, slightly higher than the alpha-cyanoacrylate biological glue (2.25 ± 0.05 N). Blood compatibility tests revealed that the glue had outstanding blood compatibility. Further, cytotoxicity test and systemic acute toxicity test both showed that the glue was without cytotoxicity and not toxic to the body.

Conclusions:

The Gel/SS/CMCS tissue glue we prepared at low cost had excellent biocompatibility and structural characteristics. It could be a better candidate for tissue engineering in biomedical applications applied in clinical practice to promote skin wound healing and to further reduce the formation of skin wound scars.

The addition of silica nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of dental stone

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The current application of nanotechnology in dentistry is limited to nanoparticles incorporated into adhesive systems and composite resins. Dental stone is a widely used material, and the incorporation of silica nanoparticles is still unexplored.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of dental stone after the addition of silica nanoparticles in different concentrations.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 180 specimens were prepared, 90 for each dental stone (Durone and Fuji Rock). For the control group (CG), no silica particles were added, while test group TGnI had silica nanoparticles added to 1 wt%, and test group TGnV had silica nanoparticles added to 5 wt%. The roughness, diametral tensile strength (DTS), and compressive strength were measured 24 hours after the start of spatulation.

RESULTS

The mean roughness values for Durone were 0.55, 0.36, and 0.28 μm for CG, TGnI, and TGnV; for Fuji Rock, the mean roughness values were 0.47 for CG, 0.31 for TGnI, and 0.35 μm for TGnV. The mean DTS values for Durone were 6.0, 5.1, and 5.0 MPa for CG, TGnI, and TGnV, respectively, and for Fuji Rock, the mean DTS values were 6.4, 5.2, and 4.5 MPa for CG, TGnI, and TGnV, respectively. The mean compressive strength values for Durone were 35.4, 32.7, and 32.4 MPa for CG, TGnI, and TGnV, respectively, and for Fuji Rock, the mean compressive strength values were 42.9, 31.2, and 29.8 MPa for CG, TGnI, and TGnV respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Surface roughness was statistically lower for the Durone and Fuji Rock stones (P<.001) when silica nanoparticles were added. The addition of silica nanoparticles did not significantly affect the DTS and compressive strength of Durone compared with CG (P>.05) but did affect the DTS of Fuji Rock when 5 wt% was added and the compressive strength in both concentrations (P<.05).
