Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of different veneering ceramics and veneering techniques on the bond strength to zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS 3Y-TZP zirconia blocks were sliced into 60 slabs, polished, and sintered. Each slab received one ceramic cylinder (Ø = 3.4 mm, 5 mm-high), according to the veneering ceramic type (feldspathic-FEL or lithium disilicate-based-LD) and the veneering technique (file-splitting with resin-based luting agent-RC, file-splitting with fusion ceramic-FC, or heat-pressing-HT), which resulted in six groups: FEL-RC, FEL-FC, FEL-HT, LD-RC, LD-FC, LD-HT. After preparation, the samples were immersed in distilled water for 24 h before the shear bond strength (SBS) test. The failure modes were classified as adhesive, predominantly adhesive, or cohesive. Representative failure mode images were taken in a Scanning Electron Microscope. The SBS data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS Both type of veneering ceramic and technique affected the bond strength. FC led to the highest SBS values. RC and HP provided similar results when compared within each veneering ceramic. Lithium disilicate achieved lower bond strength than feldspathic ceramic when the heat-pressing technique was applied. The most frequent failure modes were predominantly adhesive and adhesive for FEL and LD, respectively. CONCLUSION File-splitting with fusion ceramic provided the highest adhesion to zirconia when feldspathic or lithium disilicate-based ceramics were used. The heat-pressing technique for veneering with lithium disilicate significantly decreased the bond strength when compared to the feldspathic ceramic.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the fatigue failure load (FFL) and the number of cycles for fatigue failure (CFF) of traditional (porcelain layer up) and reversed (zirconia layer up) designs of porcelain-veneered zirconia samples prepared with heat-pressing or file-splitting techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Zirconia discs were prepared and veneered with heat-pressed or machined feldspathic ceramic. The bilayer discs were bonded onto a dentin-analog according to the bilayer technique and sample design: traditional heat-pressing (T-HP), reversed heat-pressing (R-HP), traditional file-splitting with fusion ceramic (T-FC), reversed file-splitting with fusion ceramic R-FC), traditional file-splitting with resin cement (T-RC), and reversed file-splitting with resin cement (R-RC). The fatigue tests were performed using the stepwise approach at 20 Hz, 10,000 cycles/step, step-size of 200 N starting at 600 N, and proceeding until failure detection or up to 2600 N if enduring. The failure modes (from radial and/or cone cracks) were analyzed in a stereomicroscope. RESULTS The reversed design decreased the FFL and CFF of bilayers prepared with heat-pressing and file-splitting with fusion ceramic. The T-HP and T-FC reached the highest results, which were statistically similar between them. The bilayers prepared by the file-splitting with resin cement (T-RC and R-RC) were similar to the R-FC and R-HP groups regarding FFL and CFF. Almost all reverse layering samples failed by radial cracks. CONCLUSIONS The reverse layering design did not improve the fatigue behavior of porcelain veneered zirconia samples. The three bilayer techniques behaved similarly when used in the reversed design.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the color match of ultra-translucency multilayer zirconia restorations with different designs and backgrounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty ultra-translucency multilayer zirconia crown specimens were made in VITA classical shade B2 for a prepared maxillary central incisor. The specimens were divided into three groups based on the restoration design: veneered zirconia with a trestle design (VZT), veneered zirconia with a dentin core design (VZD), and full-contour zirconia (FCZ). In the groups VZT and VZD, the zirconia specimens were layered with a feldspathic veneering ceramic. The specimens were seated on five different backgrounds: shade B2 composite resin, shade B2 zirconia, copper-colored metal alloy, silver-colored metal alloy, and the prepared central incisor. CIELab values of the labial middle sections of the crown specimens were measured with a spectrophotometer. Color differences between the specimens and a shade B2 VITA classical tab (as a control) were calculated from the ΔE* ab formula and compared with an acceptability threshold (ΔE* ab = 3.7) to be clinically explicated. RESULTS Mean ΔE* ab values ranged between 1.17 and 8.48. The restoration design, the background type, and their interaction affected the ΔE* ab (p < 0.001). The mean ΔE* ab values for VZT with all backgrounds and for VZD with the silver-colored metal background were greater than the threshold (p < 0.001), whereas the mean ΔE* ab values for VZD with the other backgrounds and FCZ with all backgrounds were less than the threshold (p = 1). CONCLUSIONS Restoration design and background type affected the color match of ultra-translucency multilayer zirconia restorations. VZT restorations on all backgrounds and VZD restorations on a silver-colored metal background showed color mismatches. However, VZD restorations on the other backgrounds and FCZ restorations on all backgrounds demonstrated color matches.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The influence of different thicknesses, translucencies, and fabrication methods on the spectrophotometric and topographical properties of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramics (ZLSs) for dental restorations remains unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of thicknesses, translucencies, and fabrication methods on the color stability, translucency parameter, opalescence parameter, whiteness stability, transmitted irradiance, light transmittance, opacity, gloss, and roughness of ZLSs exposed to coffee staining and bleaching treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two pressable ZLSs (VITA AMBRIA, VA and Celtra Press, CP) and 2 machinable ZLSs (VITA Suprinity, VS and Celtra Duo, CD) were examined at high translucency (HT) and low translucency (LT) levels in 2 thicknesses (n=160). The specimens were evaluated at baseline, after coffee staining, and after bleaching. The color stability (ΔE2000), translucency parameter (TP), opalescence parameter (OP), whiteness index (WID), and whiteness stability (ΔWID) were measured with a spectrophotometer. Transmitted irradiance (It), light transmission (T), and opacity (O) were obtained from a light-polymerizing unit and a polymerization light collection device. Roughness stability (ΔSa%) was determined with an optical profilometer, and gloss stability (ΔGU%) was recorded with a gloss meter. Data of ΔCIE2000, ΔWID, ΔSa%, and ΔGU% were analyzed by 4-way ANOVA, and data of the TP, OP, WID, It, T, and O were analyzed by repeated 4-way ANOVA (α=.05). RESULTS VS-HT exceeded the ΔCIE2000 acceptability threshold after coffee staining and bleaching protocols. Pressable ZLSs exhibited greater color stability than machinable ZLSs. The 1-mm-thick VA, CP, and CD materials exceeded the ΔWID perceptibility threshold after bleaching. The highest TP and OP was displayed by the 1-mm-thick CP after bleaching. ΔGU increased after water storage and decreased after coffee staining and bleaching. ΔSa% significantly increased after bleaching (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS The color stability and other spectrophotometric properties of ZLSs depended on material thickness. The effects of ZLS fabrication methods and translucency levels on their measured properties were inconsistent. Subjecting 1-mm-thick ZLS materials to acidic media adversely impacted their stainability and surface texture.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM How the optical properties of zirconia restorations are affected by their differing processing techniques is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of 5 different fabrication techniques on the optical properties of zirconia-based systems, including the color difference between the corresponding shades (ΔE∗ab, ΔE00), translucency parameter, opalescence parameter, and fluorescence (ΔE∗ab-FL). MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty zirconia disks (IPS e.max ZirCAD) were prepared (0.5 ±0.01mm thick) and veneered by using different techniques (n=15): Group L - layering with fluorapatite ceramic; Group P - pressing with fluorapatite ceramic; Group CB - veneered with pressing followed by layering technique; Group CO - digitally veneered with lithium disilicate glass-ceramic; and Group FZ - prepared from monolithic zirconia (inCoris TZI) (n=15). All the specimens were set to 1.5 ±0.02 mm in thickness. Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer. Data were statistically analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference, Kruskal-Wallis, Bonferroni (α=.05), Pearson, and Spearman correlation tests (α=.01). RESULTS Significant differences were found among the groups for all the optical parameters (P<.05). All the groups showed color differences higher than the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for ΔE∗ab and ΔE00, except the P and FZ groups that showed values lower than the acceptability threshold (ΔE∗ab<2.7). Translucency parameter, opalescence parameter, and ΔE∗ab-FL values ranged between 5.77 and 9.95, between 4.72 and 7.07, and between 1.93 and 3.14, respectively. Strong positive correlations were found between ΔE∗ab and ΔE00, as well as between translucency parameter and opalescence parameter (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS The optical properties of the zirconia-based systems were significantly affected by the fabrication techniques even when the same nominal shade was used. Therefore, the color reproduction, translucence, opalescence, and fluorescence of the selected materials should be considered for acceptable color matching.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to evaluate the effects of different types of monolithic zirconia (MZ) and fabrication techniques on the optical properties of newly generated zirconia-based materials after aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty specimens (n = 10) were prepared. For the groups layering-veneering (LV), overpressing (OP), porcelain fused to zirconia (PFZ), and cutback (CB), 3Y-TZP, IPS e.max ZirCAD was prepared as the core material (0.5 ± 0.01 mm). For full-contour (FC) technique, 3Y-TZP was used for MZ-LT (low translucency) and 4Y-TZP was used for MZ-MT (medium translucency). L*, a*, b*, chroma (C), and relative translucency (RTP) were measured before (L1 *, a1 *, b1 *, C1 , RTP1 ) and after (L2 *, a2 *, b2 *, C2 , RTP2 ) UV aging. Statistical analyses were performed by one-way ANOVA with Tukey's test and paired sample t tests (P = .05). RESULTS Fabrication techniques significantly affected the L*, a*, b*, C, RTP, and ΔE00 values (P ˂ .01). The highest L1 * value was found in MZ-LT; followed, in order, by OP, PFZ, LV, CB, and MZ-MT. The highest b1 * and C1 values were found in OP, while MZ-MT had the lowest values (P ˂ .05). FC had the highest RTP values for MZ-MT (13 ± 0.9 RTP1; 11.2 ± 0.9 RTP2 ), and the lowest RTP values were found for MZ-LT (8.5 ± 0.9 RTP1; 8.3 ± 1.2 RTP2 ) (P ˂ .01). Aging caused significant differences in the L*, a*, b*, C, and RTP values (P < .05). The color changes were between 0.9 and 2.1 ΔE00 . CONCLUSIONS The fabrication technique significantly affected the optical properties. UV aging caused zirconia-based restorations to become darker and more yellow, red, saturated, and opaque. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Fabrication techniques with different zirconia structures affected the optical properties of the restoration, even when the same shades were chosen. If more translucent restorations are needed, choosing 4-YTZP with the FC technique is better than veneering with 3-YTZP. Choosing 3-YTZP with the FC technique produces more esthetic results if brighter and more opaque restorations are needed.

Abstract
Background. Effects of veneering porcelain thickness and background shade on the shade match of zirconia-based restorations are unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of veneering porcelain thickness and background shade on the shade match of zirconia-based restorations.
Methods. Forty A2 shade veneered zirconia disk specimens (10 mm in diameter) were fabricated, with veneering porcelain thicknesses of 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 mm. Three backgrounds were made of A2 shade composite resin (A2), nickel-chromium alloy (NC) and amalgam (AM). The veneered zirconia specimens were placed on the backgrounds. CIELab values were measured with a spectrophotometer. ΔE values were measured to determine color differences between the specimens and the A2 VITA classical shade (target shade). ΔE values were compared with an acceptability threshold (ΔE=3.7). Repeated measures ANOVA, Bonferroni, and 1-sample t-test were used to analyze data (P<0.05).
Results. Mean ΔE values ranged between 1.9 and 5.0. The veneering porcelain thickness, the background shade and their interaction affected the ΔE (P<0.0001). The minimum veneering porcelain thickness for the shade match was 2 mm for NC and 1.8 mm for AM.
Conclusion. Veneering porcelain thickness and background shade affected the shade match of zirconia-based restorations. With dark-shaded backgrounds, the amount of veneering porcelain thickness needed for the shade match might be beyond acceptable clinical limits. Tooth-shaded backgrounds are esthetically advocated rather than dark-shaded backgrounds in zirconia-based restorations.
