Enhancing Facial Aesthetics Using a Novel Technique: A Case Report

A person's facial appearance matters in both social and professional contexts. Losing teeth has an impact on phonetics and mastication, but it also has an aesthetic effect on the lower face's appearance. Cheek sinking is caused by a decrease in muscular tone and an increase in the rate of resorption of the alveolar ridges. An edentulous patient will transform aesthetically if they receive facial as well as dental rehabilitation. The patient's social contacts and sense of self-worth both improve as a result. When an individual exhibits significant alveolar process resorption, traditional dentures are unable to offer sufficient support, hence requiring supplementary cheek support. Appliances for elevating or plumping the cheeks can be used for this. A 68-year-old male patient reported to the department of prosthodontics with a chief complaint of missing teeth and poor aesthetics. After a complete examination, a complete denture prosthesis with a detachable cheek plumper was planned. Press button retention for cheek plumpers is an advantage due to its easy installation and use. This article outlines a straightforward, inexpensive, and non-invasive process for creating a non-detachable cheek plumper using a press button for those who are edentulous. The two-in-one prosthesis enhances the appearance of the face while also replacing lost teeth.

Quantifying the facial proportions in edentulous individuals before and after rehabilitation with complete dentures compared with dentate individuals: A 3D stereophotogrammetry study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Facial collapse is associated with edentulism, and while the provision of complete dentures promotes masticatory function and esthetics, whether complete dentures restore facial proportions to the natural appearance found in dental individuals is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this clinical study was to assess the facial profiles of edentulous individuals before and after treatment with complete dentures and compare these profiles with those of dentate individuals matched by age as the control.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty White participants were recruited as 2 groups: 30 edentulous participants provided with complete dentures in both arches and 30 participants with natural teeth and normal occlusion. Facial analysis was performed through 3D stereophotogrammetry. Linear, angular, surface, and perimeter facial measurements were made and statistically analyzed with paired and independent t tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

The mean age ±standard deviation was 63.16 ±7.33 years for the edentulous participants and 60.43 ±5.34 years for the dentate controls, without statistical differences between ages (P=.105). The facial profiles of the edentulous group with and without complete dentures were statistically different (P<.05) in 6 linear and 5 angular measurements. After quantifying the facial collapse by comparing edentulous individuals without complete dentures and the control dentate group, the results showed that the majority of differences occurred in the middle and lower third of the face, evidencing shortening in these areas with differences in facial measures of around 2 to 5 mm less in the edentulous group. However, statistically significant differences between the participants with complete dentures and the control dentate group were found in only 2 linear measurements (the distance between the right and the left exocanthion to cheilion), in the sealed lip angle and the left gonial angle, and in the surface and perimeter (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Tooth loss affected the facial proportions in the lower third of the face. The provision of complete dentures restored their facial appearance but not precisely to the facial proportions of individuals with a natural dentition, as considerable differences were detected in surface and perimeter measurements.

Enhancing Esthetics Using Prosthetic Cheek Plumper With Magnet Retention for Rehabilitation of an Edentulous Patient: A Case Report

The patient's state of health is significantly impacted by aesthetics. The face undergoes various changes as we age, including the loss of fat and muscle tonicity. The loss of teeth and these modifications accentuate the look of sunken cheeks. As a result, facial deformity may have an effect on a person's mental health, especially young people who are edentulous patients. Cheek plumpers and complete dentures (CDs) can be utilized to help these people recover or enhance aesthetics. The manufacturing of a CD with magnets is described in this case report.

Detachable Lip and Cheek Plumper for Rehabilitation of Facial Disfigurement

Background

Hemimaxillectomy of acquired palatal defects may predispose the patient to hypernasal speech, leakage of fluids into the nasal cavity, impaired masticatory function, and swallowing difficulties leading to a detrimental impact on the quality of life. Sequentially, it can also affect individual character and trust in social life, leading to social phobia and anxiety. This article presents prosthodontic management of a young male patient with deformation of the entire right half of the face due to surgical removal of odontogenic myxoma. It describes a method where the clinician utilized a simple, noninvasive, and cost-effective technique to cut the weight of the obturator and to attain aesthetics, utilizing a detachable lip and cheek plumper. Case Presentation. A 19-year-old male attended the Prosthodontic Clinics at Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Khartoum, eight months after the surgical removal of a tumor. The chief complaint was difficulty eating or drinking. Furthermore, he dropped out of school because of his facial deformity and his indistinct voice. Medical and dental history revealed surgical resection of the entire right half of the maxillary alveolar bone due to myxoma. Intraoral examination revealed a well-healed surgical defect in the maxillary right buccal vestibule creating an oroantral communication. A treatment plan was formulated, keeping the patient's demand in mind. The decision was made to treat the patient with a maxillary obturator that would gain its support from the remaining teeth and tissues with a detachable cheek and lip plumper. The use of dental magnets as a means of attachment was elected.

Conclusion

This article has described a simple, noninvasive, and cost-effective method to improve facial appearance in patients with hollow faces. The plumper prosthesis successfully improved the patient's appearance to the extent that comfort and function would permit and encourage self-esteem.

Facial aesthetic evaluation of rehabilitation effects in edentulous patients with varying degrees of residual ridge resorption by 3D stereophotogrammetry

BACKGROUND

Residual ridge resorption impairs patients' satisfaction with complete denture (CD) treatment, but influence of bone resorption on the aesthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients still remains unclear due to insufficient quantitative investigations.

OBJECTIVES

To quantitatively evaluate the effects of residual ridge resorption on facial aesthetic reconstruction in elderly edentulous patients.

METHODS

According to radiological examination, a total of 19 edentulous subjects were categorised into two groups, atrophic patients (APs) and non-atrophic patients (NAPs). Before CD treatment and 3 months after treatment, patients were asked to complete the Orofacial Esthetic Scale (OES). The changes in facial appearance were measured by 3D stereophotogrammetry, and the facial parameters of two groups were compared.

RESULTS

The patient's subjective satisfaction of oro-facial aesthetics and 3D objective assessment of facial appearance improved after CD treatment. Subnasale-gnathion (Sn-Gn) significantly increased from 60.13 ± 3.91 mm to 62.27 ± 3.82 mm. After rehabilitation, glabella-subnasale (G-Sn)/Sn-Gn, nasolabial (Cm-Sn-Ls) and mentolabial (Li-Sm-Pg) significantly decreased and were closer to normal values. Moreover, the subtraction value between G-Sn/Sn-Gn and normal value before treatment of APs and NAPs was 14.47 ± 8.04% and 6.94 ± 3.69%, respectively (P = .026), while after treatment, the values decreased to 10.61 ± 6.33% and 3.86 ± 2.31% (P = .013), respectively.

CONCLUSION

The increased volume of lips and cheeks played an important role in the facial aesthetic reconstruction of edentulous patients. NAPs tended to have more attractive faces after CD treatment, as their facial profile parameters (G-Sn/Sn-Gn and Cm-Sn-Ls) were closer to normal Chinese with well-balanced faces.
