Evaluation of Surface Roughness of Acrylic Denture Bases Polished Using Algishine, a Novel Polishing Material: An In Vitro Study

Introduction Surface roughness (Ra) significantly impacts the aesthetic and functional qualities of dental prosthetics. Traditional polishing involves pumice, a material routinely used in dental practice. This study introduces Algishine as a potential cost-effective eco-friendly alternative. Materials and methods A 3D design software (Geomagic) created a Standard Tesselation Language (STL) file of 10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm. 30 STL file outputs were generated. The output was milled in wax. This was then flasked and processed. 30 acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and divided into two groups. Group A was polished using traditional pumice, and Group B was polished using Algishine. The Ra of each sample was measured using surface profilometry, with three readings per sample averaged for each group. Results Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to compare the two groups with the pre-testing samples, which showed p<0.05; indicating that there was a significant difference between the two groups. The average Ra value for unpolished acrylic was 7.105, while the specimens polished with pumice showed an Ra value of 2.218; specimens polished with novel material Algishine showed an Ra value of 1.743. This illustrates that Algishine achieves surface smoothness significantly superior to commonly used polishing agent and pumice. Discussion The results of our study demonstrate that Algishine, a novel polishing material derived from recycled alginate, effectively reduces the Ra of acrylic resin. This finding has significant implications, both clinically and environmentally. The primary clinical benefit of a smoother acrylic resin surface is the enhanced aesthetic appearance and increased patient comfort. A polished surface reduces plaque accumulation, thereby decreasing the risk of oral infections and improving the longevity of the dental prosthesis. The results show that Algishine achieves surface smoothness comparable to or better than pumice indicating that it can maintain, if not enhance, these clinical outcomes. Dental professionals can confidently use Algishine, knowing it meets the high standards required for patient care. Conclusion Algishine effectively reduces the Ra of acrylic resin, suggesting it is a viable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional pumice for dental polishing procedures. This indicates potential benefits in maintaining clinical outcomes while promoting environmental sustainability.

Color stability of CAD-CAM hybrid ceramic materials following immersion in artificial saliva and wine

PURPOSE

To examine the color stability of 3D-printed and milled, interim, and definitive, restorative materials after immersion in artificial saliva and wine for 1, 3, and 6 months.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study used a 2 × 5 factorial design with 10 subgroups, including 2 immersion liquids (artificial saliva and wine) and 5 manufacturing technology and restorative material combinations (n = 10). Color measurements were taken using a contact-type digital spectrophotometer (CM-2600d Spectrophotometer; Konica Minolta Healthcare Americas Inc) before immersion and at 1 month (T1), 3 months (T3), and 6 months (T6) after immersion. The CIE2000 system was used to calculate quantitative measurements of color differences in ΔE00, and comparisons were made to the acceptability threshold (AT) and perceptibility threshold (PT). Repeated measures of ANOVA (α = 0.05) were used to compare differences in color changes between manufacturing technology/restorative material-immersion liquid combinations at T1, T3, and T6.

RESULTS

To compare the effect of immersion liquid and time on the manufacturing technology/restorative material groups, the ΔE00 values were compared to the PT of 0.8 and the AT of 1.8. Wine caused significant color changes in ΔE00 values beyond the PT and AT values in all groups at all time intervals, except for the AT value of milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano-ceramic material). Wine immersion caused significant ΔE00 for all manufacturing technology/restorative material groups at all time intervals (1 month, 3 months, and 6 months) when compared to artificial saliva immersion (all p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Upon exposure to artificial saliva, 80%-100% of samples from all groups remained within the acceptable and perceptible color change thresholds. The wine had significant chromogenic effects on all tested restorative materials, however, the milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano-ceramic material) showed the greatest color stability. For patients with heavy wine consumption, 3D-printed definitive crowns (hybrid ceramic-filled material) may show discoloration exceeding acceptable and perceptible color change limits.

Effect of post-curing conditions on surface characteristics, physico-mechanical properties, and cytotoxicity of a 3D-printed denture base polymer

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the influence of post-polymerization (post-curing) conditions on surface characteristics, flexural properties, water sorption and solubility, and cytotoxicity of additively manufactured denture base materials.

METHODS

The tested specimens were additively manufactured using digital light processing and classified into different post-curing condition groups: submerged in water (WAT), submerged in glycerin (GLY), and air exposure (AIR). An uncured specimen (UNC) was used as a control. The surface topography and roughness were observed. The flexural strength and modulus were determined via a three-point bending test. The water sorption and solubility were subsequently tested. Finally, an extract test was performed to assess cytotoxicity.

RESULTS

Different post-curing conditions had no significant effects on the surface topography and roughness (Sa value). Various post-curing conditions also had no significant effects on the flexural strength. Notably, the flexural modulus of the WAT group (2671.80 ± 139.42 MPa) was significantly higher than the AIR group (2197.47 ± 197.93 MPa, p = 0.0103). After different post-curing conditions, the water sorption and solubility of the specimens met the ISO standards. Finally, all post-curing conditions effectively reduced cytotoxic effects.

SIGNIFICANCES

Post-curing with different oxygen levels improved flexural properties, and flexural modulus significantly increased after the specimens were submerged in water. In addition, water sorption and solubility, and cytocompatibility were optimized by post-curing, irrespective of the post-curing conditions. Therefore, the water-submerged conditions optimized the flexural modulus of the 3D-printed denture base materials.

Post-cure Heat Treatments Influence the Mechanical and Optical Properties of Acrylic and Bis-acryl Composite Resins

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of post-cure heat treatments (PCHT) on Knoop microhardness (KHN) and color change of bis-acryl composite resin (Protemp 4 - 3M ESPE, USA and PrimmaArt - FGM, Brazil) and chemically activated acrylic resins (Dencôr - Clássico, Brazil, and Duralay - Cotia, Brazil).

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Specimens (12×1 mm) were prepared for each material (n=10/group). Thirty minutes after curing, the specimens were subjected to PCHT for 10 minutes at 70°, 100°, or 130°C. The control group was kept at room temperature (24°C) for the same amount of time. KHN was analyzed 24 hours after PCHT (n=10). Following Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) Delta E 2000 (CIEDE2000 [ΔE00]), color measurements were obtained at three time points: 1. after polymerization; 2. after PCHT; and 3. after 30 days of storage in water, coffee, or red wine. Data for each material were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (p<0.05).

RESULTS

The PCHT at 130°C produced the highest KHN values. Except for the 70°C groups from Dencôr and Protemp, all PCHTs increased the initial color values (p>0.05). In general, chemically activated acrylic resins showed an increase in color stability when subjected to PCHT (p>0.05). For bis-acryl composite resin, PCHT did not influence color stability (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Overall, the results showed that PCHT increased the tested materials' color changes and Knoop microhardness. However, except for PCHT at 130°C in Duralay, the color changes remained within acceptable values. The PCHT treatment resulted in better color stability for most of the composite resins studied.

Flexural strength, surface roughness, micro-CT analysis, and microbiological adhesion of a 3D-printed temporary crown material

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the thermocycling effect of 3D-printed resins on flexural strength, surface roughness, microbiological adhesion, and porosity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

150 bars (8 × 2 × 2 mm) and 100 blocks (8 × 8 × 2 mm) were made and divided into 5 groups, according to two factors: "material" (AR: acrylic resin, CR: composite resin, BIS: bis-acryl resin, CAD: CAD/CAM resin, and PRINT: 3D-printed resin) and "aging" (non-aged and aged - TC). Half of them were subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles). The bars were subjected to mini-flexural strength (σ) test (1 mm/min). All the blocks were subjected to roughness analysis (Ra/Rq/Rz). The non-aged blocks were subjected to porosity analysis (micro-CT; n = 5) and fungal adherence (n = 10). Data were statistically analyzed (one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA; Tukey's test, α = 0.05).

RESULTS

For σ, "material" and "aging" factors were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The BIS (118.23 ± 16.26A) presented a higher σ and the PRINT group (49.87 ± 7.55E) had the lowest mean σ. All groups showed a decrease in σ after TC, except for PRINT. The CRTC showed the lowest Weibull modulus. The AR showed higher roughness than BIS. Porosity revealed that the AR (1.369%) and BIS (6.339%) presented the highest porosity, and the CAD (0.002%) had the lowest porosity. Cell adhesion was significantly different between the CR (6.81) and CAD (6.37).

CONCLUSION

Thermocycling reduced the flexural strength of most provisional materials, except for 3D-printed resin. However, it did not influence the surface roughness. The CR showed higher microbiological adherence than CAD group. The BIS group reached the highest porosity while the CAD group had the lowest values.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

3D-printed resins are promising materials for clinical applications because they have good mechanical properties and low fungal adhesion.

Antimicrobial effect and the mechanical and surface properties of a self-disinfecting and a chlorhexidine-incorporated Type IV dental stone

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Stone casts are subject to contamination, but whether disinfectants incorporated into the stone are effective is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and the mechanical and surface properties of self-disinfecting gypsum (SDG) and gypsum mixed with 2% chlorhexidine (GCHX).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Antimicrobial action was evaluated using the diffusion-disk technique on Streptococcus aureus and Candida albicans 1 hour and 24 hours after pouring the gypsum. The groups were SDG, GCHX, a positive control (PC) of gypsum mixed with distilled water, and a negative control (NC) of filter paper disk soaked with 2% chlorhexidine; n=8. Inhibition halos were measured using the ImageJ software program and statistically analyzed using the repeated measures mixed ANOVA with time×group interaction. Compressive strength (CS) in MPa and surface roughness (SR) in μm (parameters: Ra - roughness average; and Sa - 3-dimensional (3D) arithmetic mean of the surface profile) tests were performed to characterize the specimens (evaluated groups: SDG, GCHX, and PC; n=10). CS data were analyzed by a 2-way ANOVA with time×group interaction, and SR data by a 1-way ANOVA (α=.05).

RESULTS

For S aureus, there were differences between GCHX and SDG at 1 hour and 24 hours (P<.05), but no significant differences were found for C albicans (P>.05). GCHX was better than PC, except for C albicans, and showed a reduction in CS when compared with PC and SDG (P<.05) at all time intervals. The SR of GCHX increased (Ra:1.76, Sa:2.08) when compared with PC (Ra:0.89, Sa:1.12) and SDG (Ra:1.03, Sa:1.35) (Ra: P<.004 and Sa: P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The antimicrobial activity of GCHX against S aureus was better than that of SDG, but neither had an effect against C albicans. As for CS and SR, GCHX presented a decrease in properties when compared with PC and SDG but was within the American Dental Association #25 specification values.

Influences of Toothbrushing and Different Toothpastes on the Surface Roughness and Color Stability of Interim Prosthodontic Materials

The surface properties and color stability of interim crown materials may vary depending on the toothbrushing procedure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of toothbrushing and different toothpastes on the surface roughness (Ra) and color stability of different interim crown materials. Disc-shaped specimens were prepared from four interim crown materials (Tab 2000 (ChPM), Imident (LaPM), Protemp 4 (ChDM), and Telio-CAD (CadPM)). Specimens were divided into four subgroups for the control group (Cnt) and for simulated toothbrushing with distilled water (Dw) or with two different toothpastes (whitening toothpaste (WTp), activated charcoal toothpaste (ACTp)). The specimens’ Ra values were measured before and after 10,000 cycles of toothbrushing. The color parameters were measured and the color differences (ΔE00) were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s HSD tests. A significant increase in the Ra values was observed after toothbrushing, except for the LaPM_Dw, ChDM_Dw, and all the CadPM specimens (p < 0.05). Toothbrushing with toothpastes increased the ΔE00 values of all ChPM and ChDM interim materials (p < 0.05). Before and after all toothbrushing procedures, the CadPM specimens had smoother and ChPM specimens had rougher surfaces than the other interim materials. The two tested toothpastes had similar effects on the Ra of all interim materials. Non-perceivable color changes were seen only with the CadPM_Dw group.

Effects of long-term cinnamaldehyde immersion on the surface roughness and color of heat-polymerized denture base resin

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Cinnamaldehyde has been successfully used for the short-term disinfection of dentures; however, its long-term effects on the surface and color properties of denture base materials remain unknown.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of simulated immersion in cinnamaldehyde for up to 5 years on the surface roughness and color parameters of a heat-polymerized denture resin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Eighty Ø10×5-mm disk-shaped specimens were prepared from microwave heat-polymerized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and immersed in 4 solutions (n=20): TW-tap water (control), SH - 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, PX-alkaline peroxide, and CA-cinnamaldehyde (27 μg/mL). The immersion protocol simulated 104 cycles (3.5 months), 913 cycles (2.5 years), and 1825 immersion cycles (5 years) of a daily immersion cleaning protocol, with immersion times ranging from 10 to 20-minutes. Surface roughness (Sa) and the color parameters of CIELab (L∗ a∗ b∗, ΔEab), CIEDE2000 (ΔE00), and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) were analyzed at baseline (t=0) and after the immersion cycles. The data were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.01).

RESULTS

Sa was significantly increased in all groups after 1825 cycles compared with baseline (P<.01), regardless of the solution. Only the time factor significantly affected ΔEab, ΔE00, and NBS parameters, which were below the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. After a simulated 5-year immersion, the surface roughness and color values of CA-treated specimens were not statistically different from those of the other groups (P>.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Cinnamaldehyde solution (27 μg/mL) produced minor effects on the surface roughness and color parameters of a heat-polymerized denture base resin similar to those of 0.5% sodium hypochlorite and alkaline peroxide after a 5-year simulated immersion.

Effect of post-curing time on the color stability and related properties of a tooth-colored 3D-printed resin material

This study investigated the effect of post-curing time on the color stability and related properties, such as degree of conversion (DC), surface roughness, water contact angle, water sorption (W_sp), and water solubility (W_sl) of 3D-printed resin for dental restorations. The 3D-printed specimens were divided into four groups according to the post-curing time (0, 5, 10, and 20 min). Color changes (ΔE₀₀) of the specimens immersed in aging media were measured using a spectrophotometer at different aging times. The DC of the resin was measured using a FTIR. The surface roughness (Ra) of the resin immersed in coffee was measured at different aging times. Water contact angle was evaluated using the sessile drop method, and W_sp and W_sl were tested according to the ISO 4049:2019. The ΔE₀₀ values of the specimens immersed in coffee and red wine decreased with increasing post-curing time. As the post-curing time increased up to 10 min, the DC increased and water contact angle decreased. The Ra value of the group without post-curing (0 min) increased gradually for 30 days, except between 7 and 15 days. However, when the post-curing time increased to greater than 10 min, no apparent change in Ra value was detected. The W_sp and W_sl of the group without post-curing were significantly lower and larger than that of the other groups, respectively. The longer the post-curing time of the tooth-colored 3D-printed resin, the better the color stability. The post-curing time of the 3D-printed resin affected the DC, surface roughness after aging in the staining media, water contact angle, water sorption, and water solubility.

Effect of a continuous mechanical polishing protocol on the color stainability, microhardness, mass, and surface roughness of denture base acrylic resin

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The acrylic resin used in dental prostheses, which is subject to changes in its properties caused by hygiene chemicals, brushing, and colored beverages, can benefit from mechanical polishing methods. However, studies evaluating whether such procedures can be performed continuously without damaging the prosthetic materials are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of a continuous mechanical polishing protocol on the color stainability, surface roughness, microhardness, and mass of a denture base acrylic resin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The polishing protocol was tested in specimens submitted to one of the following conditions: immersion in coffee (CF) (n=20); toothbrushing (Br, 35 600 cycles in a brushing simulation machine) (n=20); and immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite (HYP) (n=20). For each condition, half of the specimens were polished (aluminum oxide paste and felt wheel attached to an electric motor, 3000 rpm) at simulated biweekly intervals. Two groups (n=10) of specimens were immersed in distilled water and used as the control for the immersion groups. Thus, the present study consisted of a total of 8 groups (n=80). Before and after simulated periods of 12 and 24 months, surface roughness was evaluated by using a contact profilometer; a spectrophotometer was used to calculate color changes (ΔE₀₀); and a Knoop microdurometer and a precision balance were used to assess microhardness and mass changes. Data were compared by using 2-way mixed ANOVA. The Tukey HSD and Student t tests were used for post hoc analysis (α=.05).

RESULTS

The polishing influenced surface roughness (Br, CF, HYP: P<.001) and color stainability (Br: P=.008; CF: P<.001). Significant increase in roughness was observed for the Br and HYP groups, and the polishing significantly reduced roughness under all experimental conditions. In general, the polishing did not affect the microhardness and caused minimum wear of the acrylic resin. ΔE₀₀ values were above the clinical perceptibility threshold (ΔE₀₀>1.30) for the Br group, exceeding the clinical acceptability threshold for the CF group (ΔE₀₀= 2.51). Polishing reduced ΔE₀₀ in these groups, making values similar to those found in the groups immersed in distilled water. The color in the HYP group was not influenced by polishing.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, the tested polishing protocol reduced the deleterious effects of brushing and contact with 1% sodium hypochlorite and coffee, reducing surface roughness and color change without affecting microhardness and mass in any clinically relevant way.

Effect of the incorporation of silica blow spun nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles (SiO2/Ag) on the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties of a low-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin

OBJECTIVE

This work aimed at producing silica-blow-spun nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles (SiO₂/Ag) and investigating the effect of their incorporation in different proportions, with or without pre-treatment with a silane coupling agent, on the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties of a commercial composite low-viscosity bulk-fill resin.

METHODS

The production of SiO₂/Ag nanofibers was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). A portion of the produced nanofibers was silanized. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, and agar diffusion tests against Streptococcus mutans were used to verify the differences between silanized and non-silanized nanofibers. Different proportions (0.5 wt% and 1 wt%) of silanized (SiO₂/Ag-0.5S and SiO₂/Ag-1S) and non-silanized (SiO₂/Ag-0.5NS and SiO₂/Ag-1NS) nanofibers were incorporated into the bulk-fill composite (Opus Bulk Fill Flow, FGM). A commercial composite was used as the control. Evaluation of the color parameters (L*, a*, and b*), radiopacity, contact angle, antimicrobial activity, Vickers microhardness, surface roughness (Sa and Sq), flexural strength, and SEM of the fractured surfaces were performed. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (fiber morphology), Kruskal-Wallis tests, with Dunn's post hoc test (antimicrobial activity of the specimen against S. mutans), Student's t-test (disk diffusion), one-way ANOVA and Tukey (color, radiopacity, and contact angle), and two-way ANOVA and Tukey (microhardness, surface roughness, and flexural strength) tests. All statistical analyses were performed at a significance level of 1% (α = 0.01).

RESULTS

Porous nanometric SiO₂/Ag fibers were successfully produced. The silanization process, confirmed by FTIR, increased the diameter and contact angle and reduced the growth inhibition halos of the nanofibers (p < 0.01). After the incorporation of nanofibers into the dental composite, all color parameters were altered in all the experimental groups (p < 0.01). All the groups presented adequate radiopacity values. No statistical difference was observed in the contact angles of the experimental composites (p > 0.01). The lowest microbial counts were obtained in the SiO₂/Ag-0.5S group; although no significant difference was observed with the control group (p < 0.01). The SiO₂/Ag-1S, SiO₂/Ag-0.5S, and SiO₂/Ag-0.5NS groups exhibited higher microhardness after 30 d of immersion in water (p < 0.01). The surface roughness (Sa-μm) resembled that of the control at baseline, except for the SiO₂/Ag-1NS group. For the baseline evaluation of flexural strength, all the experimental groups exhibited lower values than the control, except for SiO₂/Ag-0.5NS and SiO₂/Ag-0.5S, but after 30 d of immersion in water, there was no difference (p < 0.01).

SIGNIFICANCE

The incorporation of 0.5% wt. of silanized nanofibers in the commercial composite (SiO₂/Ag-0.5S) seemed to be promising, especially for its greater inhibition of S. mutans, adequate roughness, and flexural strength, in addition to high hardness, even after aging in water.

Comparative evaluation of color stability of three commercially available provisional restorative materials: An in vitro study

Aim:

Esthetics of the provisional restorations is of prime importance to the patients especially in long term in the esthetic zone. Discolouration of these restorations may result in patient dissatisfaction and an additional expense for their replacement. LuxaCrown provisional material being new in market and claimed to be semi-permanent by the company needs to be evaluated for its colour stability. This in vitro study was aimed to evaluate and compare the colour stability of three provisional restorations using three pigmented solutions.

Setting and Design:

In vitro - comparative study.

Materials and Methods:

LuxaCrown, Protemp4, Heat cure PMMA were evaluated. 40 specimens of each material were divided into four groups of ten specimens each. Each group was stored in three staining solutions and artificial saliva. Colour values of each specimen were measured before immersion, after one day, one week, one month, three months and six months with a spectrophotometer.

Stastistical Analysis Used:

One way ANOVA, Post Hoc Tukey Test, Bonferonni Test.

Results:

Least colour change was seen in Heat Cure PMMA followed by Protemp4 and highest colour change was seen in LuxaCrown when immersed in artificial saliva, tea and coffee. Whereas in turmeric, Heat Cure PMMA showed the least colour change followed by LuxaCrown and highest colour change was seen in Protemp4 at all time intervals except day one, where LuxaCrown was higher than Protemp4.

Conclusion:

Heat cure showed the best results as compared to Protemp4 and LuxaCrown in terms of colour stability at all time periods.

A Novel Polishing Paste (Mollusk Shells) for Poly (Methylmethacrylate)

Objective

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mollusk shells polishing paste (Donax obesulus) on the surface roughness of acrylic resin poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA).

Methods

This study was an in vitro experimental design. A sample size of 72 was divided into 4 groups of n = 18 each. PMMA specimens were prepared and polished with the evaluated pastes using mollusk shells (experimental paste) and pumice stone. Surface roughness (μm) was measured using a profilometer after polishing the PMMA samples. The paired Wilcoxon test was used to evaluate the roughness values at 24 and 48 hours. Then, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to identify the differences between the effects of the two groups evaluated with a significance level of α = 0.05.

Results

The roughness difference between the pastes under study was compared, and mean values of 0.50 ± 0.07 μm (mollusk shell paste group) and 0.45 ± 0.12 μm (pumice group) were obtained. No statistically significant differences were found between the experimental paste and pumice stone paste (p=0.309). The specimens polished with pumice stone paste showed higher roughness values, while those polished with the experimental paste exhibited the lowest values. Conclusion. In summary, mollusk shells polishing paste had a decrease in roughness values compared to pumice, although these differences were not statistically significant.

Comparison of surface roughness and color stainability of 3-dimensionally printed interim prosthodontic material with conventionally fabricated and CAD-CAM milled materials

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Studies on the surface roughness and color stainability of interim prostheses produced with 3-dimensional-printing technology are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of different surface treatments on the surface roughness and stainability of 3-dimensionally printed, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled and conventional interim materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 320 specimens were fabricated from autopolymerizing polymethyl methacrylate, bis-acryl composite resin, CAD-CAM polymethyl methacrylate resin (milled), and 3-dimensionally printed composite resin (printed) (n=80). A group of each material was divided into 2 groups (n=40) as per the applied surface treatment procedure: conventional polishing (C) or coated with a surface sealant (B). Surface roughness values were measured with a profilometer. Each group of specimens was then divided into 4 subgroups (n=10) and stored for 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days at 37 °C in different solutions: distilled water, cola, coffee, and red wine. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after each storage period, and color differences (CIEDE2000 [ΔE₀₀]) were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Mann-Whitney U test followed by the Friedman test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The highest surface roughness values were determined for the polymethyl methacrylate -C, and the lowest were observed in the printed-B. After 30 days, the highest mean ΔE₀₀ values were observed in polymethyl methacrylate-C for all staining solutions (P=.001). The highest ΔE₀₀ for all materials was observed in the red wine group. Color change increased significantly with storage duration (P=.001).

CONCLUSIONS

All tested materials had a surface roughness higher than the plaque accumulation threshold (0.2 μm). The surface roughness values of coated materials were significantly lower than those of their conventionally polished groups, except for the printed groups. The application of a surface sealant agent significantly decreased the staining of the materials.

Optical properties of bisacryl-, composite-, ceramic- resin restorative materials: An aging simulation study

OBJECTIVE

Compare optical properties of a bisacryl-, composite-, and ceramic-resin restorative materials pre and post artificial aging.

METHODS

Bisacryl-resin (LuxaCrown [LC], DMG), resin-composite (Filtek Supreme Ultra, [Filtek SU] 3M ESPE), and ceramic-resin (Enamic, VITA Zahnfabrik) specimens were prepared. The L*, C*_ab , and h_ab values were measured pre and post artificial aging to determine color stability (CIEDE2000) and changes in contrast ratio (CR), transmittance block, and relative translucency parameter. The datasets were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA followed by pairwise comparisons.

RESULTS

Color difference data showed a significant interaction between materials and treatments [F(6:60) = 375.04, P < .0001] with Enamic being most color stable material and coffee having most effect on color stability. CR data showed a significant interaction between materials and treatments [F(6:60) = 4.12, P = .0016]. LC showing most change in CR values with coffee treatment. Change in transmittance blocked by Filtek SU and LC was greater for coffee treatment than that by each of the other treatments (P < .0001). Filtek SU and LC, coffee produced a greater decrease in relative translucency than that each of the other treatments (P < .0001).

CONCLUSIONS

Resin-based materials demonstrate optical properties that encourage their use for direct/indirect restorative options. Color stability and translucency of these materials are proportionally related.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Understanding the optical properties of resin-based materials provides help in material selection and provides insight into clinical performance and esthetic longevity. The optical stability of certain bisacryl-resin is better than what was previously determined for these restorative materials.

Cinnamaldehyde is a biologically active compound for the disinfection of removable denture: blinded randomized crossover clinical study

BACKGROUND

Fungal infections associated with the use of dentures, like denture stomatitis, are difficult to prevent and treat. This in situ study aimed to investigate the efficacy of cinnamaldehyde for the disinfection of complete removable dentures, and the effect on the physical and mechanical properties (Vickers microhardness, color, and surface roughness) of the acrylic resin.

METHODS

Acrylic resin disks were inserted into the dentures of a probabilistic sample of 33 complete denture users, that used cinnamaldehyde (27 μg/mL) and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solutions in a 20 min/7-days protocol of dentures immersion in each solution, with a wash-out period of 7 days, to constitute a crossover-study. The disks were analyzed before and after the immersion, for the presence of microorganisms (CFU/mL) and by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the surface roughness (Ra) and Vickers microhardness were measured, and color parameters were analyzed using the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) method. Data was analyzed by Wilcoxon and Friedman (microbiological evaluation), paired t-test (color and roughness) and independent t-test (Vickers hardness) (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

A significant reduction (P < 0.05) in the number of microorganisms was observed for each species (total microorganisms, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida spp.), with no significant differences (P > 0.05) between hypochlorite and cinnamaldehyde. There was an increase in the roughness and a decrease in the hardness of the test specimens, with no difference between the two disinfectant substances (P > 0.05). Both hypochlorite and cinnamaldehyde also caused changes in color, considered as "perceptible" by the NBS classification, but with no significant difference between disinfectant substances (P < 0.05), and under the clinically acceptable limit (ΔE ≤ 3.7).

CONCLUSION

The 27 μg/mL cinnamaldehyde solution was effective against all evaluated microorganisms and caused minor alterations in hardness, surface roughness, and color parameters, with no clinical relevance.

Differences in Radiopacity, Surface Properties, and Plaque Accumulation for CAD/CAM-Fabricated vs Conventionally Processed Polymer-based Temporary Materials

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

As temporary materials are often used in prosthetic dentistry, there is need to investigate their behavior in the oral environment. Parameters such as surface roughness and surface free energy correlate to the level of plaque adhesion, which can impact gingival health.

SUMMARY

Pit and fissure nanocomposite sealants reinforced with organically modified montmorillonite: A study of their mechanical properties, surface roughness and color stability

The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of the different organically modified nanoclays on clinically significant properties of new synthesized dental pit and fissure nanocomposite sealants. Their morphological characteristics were examined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A universal testing machine was used to conduct the flexural and compression tests. Surface roughness measurements were taken by using a 3D-optical profilometer. Color changes after aging in black tea were determined by recording UV-visible spectra. XRD plots depicted possible structures governed by intercalated regions along with some "tactoids" nanoparticles. SEM images revealed a better dispersion for the methacrylated clay nanofiller. Flexural modulus and microhardness were found to be higher for sealants reinforced with such polymerizable nanoclays. These specific nanocomposites yielded smoother surfaces, as well as clinically accepted color changes even after 1 week aging in black tea.
