Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Digital scanning is gradually replacing conventional impression making, but consensus on how tooth preparation influences the accuracy of intraoral scanning is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of substrate material and abutment geometry on the accuracy of digital casts obtained by intraoral scanning. MATERIAL AND METHODS The height and total occlusal convergence (TOC) angle were measured in 5 different groups that contained 5 specimens of different materials: natural tooth, cobalt chromium alloy, titanium, zirconium dioxide ceramic, and resin. The specimens were scanned with an industrial scanner to obtain reference data. Each specimen was placed in a maxillary standard dentition model that was assembled in a head simulator. Each dentition model was scanned 10 times with an intraoral scanner (IOS) under operatory lighting conditions to acquire intraoral scanning files for each specimen. All data were imported into a metrology software program and processed. A total of 10 trueness deviations, the mean superimposition results between IOS scanning data and reference data, and precision deviations, the mean superimposition results between IOS scanning data in pairs, were recorded. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test were used to analyze the accuracy of intraoral scanning in relation to the height or TOC angle of the abutment (α=.05). The total means of each substrate material were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS The accuracy of scanning images was related to material and abutment geometry (P<.05). Bias was larger as abutment height increased with most substrates. Larger TOC angles increased the accuracy of the digital scans. The trueness deviation of translucent materials and the precision deviation of reflective materials were generally larger. CONCLUSIONS Substrate material and abutment geometry influence the accuracy of intraoral scanning. The accuracy of IOS generally tended to improve with decreasing height and increasing TOC angle and was affected by different substrates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Light-cured resins are widely used as gingival barriers to protect the gums from highly concentrated peroxides used in tooth bleaching. The impact of barrier brand on clinical outcomes is typically considered negligible. However, there is limited evidence on the effects of different brands on operator experience, barrier adaptation, and patient comfort. OBJECTIVE This clinical trial assessed the impact of four commercial gingival barrier brands (Opaldam, Topdam, Lysadam, and Maxdam) on operator perception, adaptation quality, and patient comfort. METHODS Twenty-one undergraduate students placed gingival barriers in a randomized sequence using blinded syringes. Photographs of the barriers were taken from frontal and incisal perspectives. After bleaching procedures, operators rated handling features and safety using Likert scale forms. Two experienced evaluators independently assessed barrier adaptation quality on a scale from 1 (perfect) to 5 (unacceptable). The absolute risk of barrier-induced discomfort was recorded. Data were analyzed using Friedman and Chi-square tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS Opaldam and Topdam received the highest scores in most handling features, except for removal, which was similar among all brands. No significant difference was observed in barrier adaptation quality between the evaluated brands. Discomforts were mainly reported in the upper dental arch, with Maxdam having the highest absolute risk (35% for this arch and 24% overall). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that gingival barrier brands can influence operator perception and patient comfort. Opaldam and Topdam were preferred by operators, but all brands demonstrated comparable adaptation quality. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was nested in a randomized clinical trial registered in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry under identification number RBR-9gtr9sc.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital impression technique or computer-aided impression (CAI) has been recently concluded as a clinically acceptable alternative to conventional impression method (CIM) in the fabrication of crowns, short fixed partial dentures (FPDs), and implant-supported crowns. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the patients' opinion and subjective perception of two different ways of impression - digital and conventional. METHODS A total of 45 patients were treated with CAI and CIM for the fabrication of tooth or implant-supported crowns. They fulfilled a questionnaire including 11 questions regarding the treatment time, gag reflex, discomfort related to manipulation, and other aspects of treatment. RESULTS CAI was considered the preferential method for future treatment in 53% of patients, whereas 28.9% of the respondents preferred CIM. The preference for the impression method was influenced by the total time spent with the procedure, discomfort during manipulation with the tray or scanning head, size of the tray or scanning head, maximal opening discomfort, and (the tendency towards) gag reflex. CONCLUSION CAI was considered a more comfortable and preferential method. Discomfort or difficulties during CAI negatively affected the patients' attitude to CAI, whereas the difficulties associated with CIM did not have any influence on the preferred method.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the perception of the patient, the chairside time, and the reliability and/or reproducibility of intraoral scanners for full arch in pediatric patients. Methods A data search was performed in four databases (Medline-Pubmed, Scopus, ProQuest and Web of Science) in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 statements. Studies were classified in three categories (patient perception, scanning or impression time and reliability and/or reproducibility). The resources, the data extraction and the quality assessment were carried out independently by two operators. The variables recorded were population characteristics, material and methods aspects and included country, study design and main conclusion. A quality assessment of the selected studies was performed with QUADAS-2 tool, and Kappa-Cohen Index was calculated to analyze examiner agreement. Results The initial search obtained 681 publications, and finally four studies matching inclusion criteria were selected. The distribution of the studies in the categories was three for the analysis of the patient's perception and scanning or impression time; and two items to assess the reliability and/or reproducibility of intraoral scans. All included studies have a repeated measures-transversal design. The sample size ranged between 26 and 59 children with a mean age. The intraoral scanners evaluated were Lava C.O.S, Cerec Omnicam, TRIOS Classic, TRIOS 3-Cart and TRIOS Ortho. The quality assessment of the studies using QUADAS-2 tool revealed a low risk of bias while evaluating patient perception, but an unclear risk of bias in the analysis of accuracy or chairside time. In relation to the applicability concerns, the patient selection was of high risk of bias. All studies agreed that the patient perception and comfort is better with intraoral scanners in comparison with the conventional method. The accuracy or reliability of the digital procedure is not clear, being clinically acceptable. In relation with the chairside time, it depends on the intraoral scanner, with contradictory data in the different analyzed studies. Conclusion The use of intraoral scanners in children is a favorable option, finding a significantly higher patient perception and comfort with intraoral scanners compared to the conventional impression method. The evidence for reliability or reproducibility is not strong to date, however, the differences between the intraoral measurements and the digital models would be clinically acceptable.

Abstract
Background:
The escalated technological development and the emergence of computer-aided manufacturing have improved dental restoration accuracy and the accurate manufacturing of prosthetic models.
Objective:
The study aims to assess patients' comfort level, preferences, and acceptance of treatment time for conventional impression technique vs. digital impression among orthodontic patients treated with clear aligners.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey study was conducted between February 2019 and April 2019 by recruiting 50 patients from the orthodontic clinics at multiple centers. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to evaluate patients' perceptions in each impression technique group. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test were applied with statistical significance set at P<0.05.
Results:
The results showed that the impression technique bothered patients as they experienced helplessness during treatment. There was a significant impact on patients' perception of the treatment, whereas there was an insignificant association between comfort level and treatment of the patients.
Conclusion:
The technicalities of conventional impression were not applied to the intraoral scanners, making these scanners superior and more user-friendly. Digital impression techniques were also preferred by the participants regarding their time, taste/smell, and sensitivity.

Procedure Time and Students’ Perception Comparing Full Arch Digital Scans with Conventional Impressions: A Cross-Over Randomized Experimental Trial. Int J Dent 2022; 2022:6320251. Abstract
Methods Ninety-six dental students each prepared tooth #36 for an all-ceramic crown on typodont models and were then randomly assigned into either group A: performed digital scan first, or Group B: performed conventional impression first. Procedure time was recorded for both. Immediately following each procedure, students indicated their perceived procedure difficulty. After exposure to both techniques, they selected their preferred one. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the mean procedure time of both techniques (P < 0.0001), where students spent 663.76 ± 442.50 seconds to complete the conventional impression and 293.32 ± 181.49 seconds to complete the digital scan. Females were significantly faster in completing the conventional impression compared to males. On the contrary, male students were faster in digital scanning than female students. There were no carryover effects in the duration and the initially performed procedure. 76% (73 of 96) of participants preferred digital scanning with no statistical significance shown between the preferred and initially performed procedure. Participants perceived conventional impressions to be more difficult than digital scans. There was a weak positive correlation between the VAS score and the procedure time for the digital technique (R = 0.25) and a moderate positive correlation for the conventional technique (R = 0.45). Conclusions The digital technique was preferred and perceived as easier than the conventional among undergraduate dental students with no impression-making experience, suggesting their readiness for new technology uptake. However, no significant correlation was found between the initially performed procedure and preference.

Abstract
The Scientific Investigation Committee of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry offers this review of the 2021 dental literature in restorative dentistry to inform busy dentists regarding noteworthy scientific and clinical progress over the past year. Each member of the committee brings discipline-specific expertise to coverage of this broad topical area. Specific subject areas addressed, in order of the appearance in this report, include COVID-19 and the dental profession (new); prosthodontics; periodontics, alveolar bone, and peri-implant tissues; implant dentistry; dental materials and therapeutics; occlusion and temporomandibular disorders; sleep-related breathing disorders; oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery; and dental caries and cariology. The authors focused their efforts on reporting information likely to influence daily dental treatment decisions with an emphasis on future trends in dentistry. With the tremendous volume of dentistry and related literature being published daily, this review cannot possibly be comprehensive. Rather, its purpose is to update interested readers and provide important resource material for those interested in pursuing greater details on their own. It remains our intent to assist colleagues in negotiating the extensive volume of important information being published annually. It is our hope that readers find this work useful in successfully managing the patients and dental problems they encounter.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the band fit of metallic band-loop space maintainers fabricated by conventional and 3D printing technologies for clinical applications. DESIGN Sixteen digital intraoral impressions were selected, and resin models were printed with a 3D printer. Forty band-loop space maintainers were fabricated (20 each for both the conventional and digital groups). To evaluate the band fit of conventional and CAD/CAM-fabricated space maintainers, cement space was visualized with low-viscosity condensation silicone material on resin models. Digital evaluation was carried out using dual scan method by superimposing two scans of resin models covered with or without a silicone layer on the abutment tooth. The mean quadratic deviation (root mean square, RMS) was calculated. The RMS values between the groups were evaluated with Student's t test. Statistical significance was set at p < .05. RESULTS No statistical significance was found between the conventional and digital groups (p = .56). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the band fit of conventional and CAD/CAM-fabricated space maintainers had no difference. Future research into CAD/CAM-fabricated appliances from different perspectives such as fracture strength and patient comfort is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of age and intra-oral scanner (IOS) on the learning curve of inexperienced operators. METHODS Thirty-four operators pertaining to 1 of 3 groups: (G1) students ≤ 25 years (y), (G2) dentists ≥ 40y, and (G3) a control group of experienced IOS operators (no age limitation), were included. All participants performed baseline and final quadrant scans on a volunteer subject, before and after a training program of 3 sessions, with two different IOS: TRIOS 3 (S1) and True Definition (S2). Baseline and final scanning times were registered in seconds. A Pearson correlation was applied to evaluate the correlation between age and scanning time. An ANOVA of repeated measures test was applied to evaluate inter-group (G1, G2, G3) and inter-system performance. Significance level was set at a = 0.05. RESULTS Age and scanning time for inexperienced operators showed a weak positive correlation for final scanning time (r = 0.29, p < 0.05). When comparing groups and filtering by IOS, S1 failed to show differences between groups (p > 0.05). With S2, the control group demonstrated a better performance than G2 (p < 0.05), while G1 only demonstrated a better performance than G2 at final scanning time (p = 0.005). Overall, the type of IOS had a significant impact on the scanning time (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Results from this study indicate that age and type of IOS have an impact on the performance and learning curve of inexperienced IOS operators. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Gaining knowledge on how different aspects, such as age, experience or IOS system, influence the learning curve to IOSs is relevant due to the financial and strategical impact associated with the acquisition of an IOS.
