Abstract
Internationally there are both current and looming mental health workforce shortages. Mental health nurses who have received specialist education are a vital component to respond to these challenges. AIM This qualitative study aimed to better understand the efficacy and product quality of mental health nurse workforce preparation through pre-registration nurse education in Australia. METHOD To meet this aim 19 educators representing 13 different universities were qualitatively interviewed. RESULTS Thematic analysis found four themes (1) Graduates are under-prepared for safe mental health nurse practice; (2) Essential mental health nurse capabilities are missing in graduates; (3) Barriers to graduate preparation, and (4) Negative impacts of inadequate graduate preparation. DISCUSSION Findings from this study suggest future workforce shortages would be best addressed through direct undergraduate entry for mental health nursing Implications for Practice: All nurse undergraduate training needs significantly enhanced mental health theory and placement within the course.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This debate essay proposes possible remedies to the shortage of nurses in acute inpatient mental health settings and draws inspiration from a Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing editorial, Glascott and McKeown (2022, 29, 767). AIM The aim is to stimulate debate within the profession. The art and science of nursing continues to develop but staffing shortages in key areas undermine practice, leadership, academic and policy efforts to improve the quality of care for people attending services. METHOD This is a debate essay which draws on the authors' experience and presents ideas based on extant literature. RESULTS Organisational, professional and wider societal challenges are explored. Practice-based solutions as well as recommendations for improving the terms and conditions of employment of nurses are made. Opportunities which may empower the nursing profession are promulgated. DISCUSSION It is intended that this paper will provoke further discourse and may reflect the 'call to action' advocated by Glascott and McKeown (Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, 2022, 29, 767). IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE While the focus is on acute inpatient mental health nursing, the ideas presented may have an application to wider nursing groups or a wider cadre of public sector workers.

Abstract
The mental health nursing profession has experienced various challenges since its inception. This discursive review considers these challenges, including how mental health nurses have and can continue to overcome adversity as individuals and as a profession. The discussion examines the influence of the profession's historical involvement in institutionalization and coercive care; the continuing impact of stigma; and the increasing demand for mental health services, amidst chronic staff shortages. Collectively, mental health nurses must harness strong therapeutic relationships, intra- and multi-disciplinary collaboration, personal and professional resilience, education that prepares them for the future, and sector-wide planning and innovation, to respond positively to these challenges. These approaches will support mental health nurses to overcome adversity and achieve positive outcomes for the profession and people with the lived experience of mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing staff within the mental health sector are major actors in delivering healthcare. They face considerable obstacles that may hinder the provision of high-quality care to patients with mental health challenges. AIM The current study offers a description of mental health nurses' viewpoints, insights into obstacles encountered during their experiences, and recommendations for enhancing psychiatric inpatient nursing care and achieving progress toward the goals set out by Saudi Vision 2030. METHODS The study employed a phenomenological qualitative design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 currently practicing mental health nurses during two focus group sessions. The inductive data produced underwent member and peer checking. Emergent themes and subthemes were extracted. RESULTS Two main themes and related subthemes were identified. The first theme-obstacles faced by mental health nurses-was composed of the following subthemes: policy at institutions; clear job roles; low professional self-confidence and inadequate support; stressed, insecure, and unsafe; and stigmatization. The second theme-recommendations to improve the quality of mental health nursing-was composed of two subthemes: to enhance mental health awareness and improve professional skills and education. CONCLUSION The data suggest that maintaining high-quality nursing standards within an inpatient psychiatric facility requires a consistent and accountable organizational structure, which can lead to fostering the development and improvement of relevant nursing skills through continuing education, improved awareness of mental health disorders and care within the community, and initiatives to combat the stigma of mental disorders among patients, families, and communities.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to describe how nurses' dialogue compares with that of doctors in the Australian reality television program Emergency and to explain how this dialogue and the use of narration and direct-to-camera monologues contribute to the portrayal of nurses. The final aim was to outline how these findings can inform the actions of nurses, nursing organizations and writers and journalists. DESIGN A descriptive study conducted in 2021 and 2022. METHODS Character network analysis was used to describe the verbal interaction of nurses and doctors and identify major, minor and background characters. Narration and direct-to-camera monologues were analysed through frequency counts. Cultivation theory was used to interpret the results. RESULTS Fifty-four characters were identified, with 19 of these being nurses. Doctors spoke 87.9% of the dialogue. Most of the dialogue (43%) was monologue by doctors directly to the camera. All major characters were doctors, and only one nurse was a minor character. The mean number of mentions by the narrator of a nurse per episode was 4, and 30 for a doctor. CONCLUSION The portrayal of nurses in Emergency is inaccurate and the production methods are used to privilege the role of doctors. This finding comes after decades of research showing inaccurate images of nursing in television. Drawing on recent Australian inquiries and the challenges experienced by mental health and aged care nursing, several approaches for collaborative action to improve these images are suggested. IMPACT This is the first study of the portrayal of nursing in reality television. These results suggest that much effort is still required even in contemporary reality television to accurately reflect the work and contribution of nurses. It is the shared responsibility of individual nurses, nursing organizations and writers and journalists to accurately portray nurses in the media. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This network analysis of a postproduction television program did not allow patient or public involvement in the design or analysis.

Abstract
Mental health nurses are exposed frequently to occupational stress and can experience a range of negative impacts on their well-being and intention to stay in the nursing workforce. Promoting Resilience in Nurses (PRiN) is a strength-based resilience education programme that incorporates evidence-based cognitive behavioural and interpersonal approaches with post-traumatic growth theory. A partially clustered randomized controlled trial at a large public mental health service will be used to examine the effects of PRiN on mental health nurses' coping self-efficacy, resilience, well-being, mental health, emotional regulation, post-traumatic growth, workplace belonging, and turnover intention as compared to controls. Process evaluations are increasingly used to help understand and interpret trial results for complex interventions. This paper describes the protocol for an embedded mixed methods process evaluation that aims to evaluate the PRiN programme implementation and identify factors that may explain variation in participant outcomes in the trial. Data collection includes a programme participant satisfaction survey; a follow-up semi-structured interview with selected programme participants; a unit/team manager survey on barriers and facilitators to staff recruitment and programme participation; and a fidelity checklist completed by programme facilitators. Normalisation Process Theory will be used to inform data analysis and integration. The findings will provide insights into factors that affect programme implementation, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and may help explain differences in participant outcomes. Findings will also inform post-trial programme sustainability as well as potential future upscale and adaptation for implementation across healthcare settings.

Abstract
Nursing in psychiatric inpatient care is peripheral to a dominating biomedical model of care. Efforts are being made to implement nursing models based on core values and theories for nursing, such as recovery-oriented practices. The aim of the study was to explore experiences of a recovery-oriented nursing programme (Steps Towards Recovery, STR) among nursing staff in psychiatric inpatient care and their ratings of stress (Maslach Burnout Inventory scores), quality of care (Quality of Psychiatric Care - Inpatient staff scores) and satisfaction with nursing care (Satisfaction with Nursing Care and Work scale scores), before and after the implementation-and compare with ratings from reference wards. A quasi-experimental and prospective, pretest-post-test design was used. Specific questions about the nursing programme were answered by staff at the intervention wards. Staff reported predominantly positive experiences of the nursing programme. At follow-up, higher ratings were reported in two dimensions of quality of care in the STR group, and lower ratings in one dimension of stress were evident in the reference group. No differences in ratings between the STR and reference wards were found. Staff members' positive experiences of STR and higher ratings regarding participation and secure environment after implementation suggest that STR is a well-accepted and promising nursing programme. It is important to implement and evaluate recovery-oriented interventions in psychiatric inpatient care, where a focus on symptom relief still prevails. The results indicate that there is potential for further exploration of STR in this context.

Abstract
Knowledge of how nurses are described in recruitment advertisements can aid assessment of the current status of professional psychiatric-mental health nursing and inform services dealing with the challenges of nurse recruitment. This study used content analysis to explore descriptions of nurses in psychiatric-mental health care in a purposive sample of 75 recruitment advertisements collected in Sweden in February 2019. The descriptions were interpreted as focussing on their being willing and able to function in discouraging practice environments, matching the ideal of psychiatric-mental health nursing poorly. The study suggested a need to align the ideals and realities of the nursing profession.

Abstract
In a global context where populations' mental health needs are growing rapidly, recruiting the next generation of nurses to work in these care settings is particularly problematic. Because of their negative views on mental health issues, nursing students reject such a career path. According to the literature, training programs, particularly clinical immersions, are the main way of mitigating the unpopularity of mental health care among this new generation of nurses. Through an interpretive phenomenological analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with eleven undergraduate nursing students, this research studied their learning experience during a clinical immersion in mental health care. Anchored in Parse's humanbecoming theory, this study explores the meaning that students attribute to such an experience, the experiential negotiation processes of the practicum setting, and the participants' ability to project themselves beyond the learning experience itself. These results raise various issues related to mental health nursing education, such as the importance of having a nursing role model, as well as various influencing factors related to the rejection of a career in mental health care by the next generation, such as the perception that working in these care settings involves an increased risk of aggression.

Abstract
Nurses play a crucial role in mental healthcare provision. Like many countries, Australian nursing students are educated in comprehensive pre-registration programmes which include mental health clinical placements. Placements play a vital role in students' education, providing the opportunity to engage with consumers and develop mental health nursing knowledge and skills. There is limited knowledge of student perspectives on traditional placements in contemporary recovery-oriented mental health services. This interpretive qualitative inquiry aimed to explore nursing students' experience of traditional mental health clinical placement and how it influenced their practice and their understandings of recovery from mental illness. Data were collected from focus groups with n = 31 nursing students in a large metropolitan public mental health service. Thematic analysis resulted in three themes of experience: humanizing people with mental illness; learning about recovery; and shifting perspectives on mental health nursing. Through a positive placement experience where they felt supported and included by staff, students came to see consumers as people rather than diagnoses, developed greater understanding of mental health nursing work and were more likely to consider mental health nursing as a career choice. Peer-support workers were an important influence on students' understandings of recovery and have a key role to play in educating students on placement. Students need to be prepared and supported by university and clinical staff to deal with vicarious trauma that may occur on placement. Mental health placements play a crucial role in attracting students into the field, and it is imperative they remain part of comprehensive pre-registration education.

Abstract
In every population and country around the world, mental health needs are great and are on the rise. Through their training and their vast field of expertise, nurses are an important lever for addressing the issue of accessibility in these care settings. While the increase in the number of new nursing graduates should have helped this issue, recent data show a sharp increase in the shortage of nurses in these care settings. This systematic review (n=40) using the CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycArticles, and Scopus databases aims to explore why psychiatric and mental health care settings are unpopular with the next generation of nurses. Guided by Parse's theory, this review identifies three major themes : (1) nursing students' perspectives on mental health issues, (2) the influences of educational interventions on these perspectives, and (3) the factors facilitating and constraining a career in these care settings for new nursing graduates. These results enable a better understanding of what can affect the recruitment of new graduate nurses in mental health/psychiatry, while proposing various levers of intervention to specifically address this issue.

Abstract
Psychiatric nurses often experience associative stigma. Associative stigma may impact psychiatric nurses' views of their professional identity which ultimately impacts the health care of individuals experiencing mental health concerns. Very little research has been conducted on associative stigma in the western Prairie Provinces, including Manitoba. The authors conducted a secondary analysis on the results of an explanatory sequential mixed methods research study to determine if psychiatric nurses in Manitoba are influenced by associative stigma. Three themes were identified through this analysis, specifically: (1) the perception that RPNs are not "Real" Nurses; (2) lack of recognition of specialized training; and (3) working with a stigmatized population. Associative stigma was intertwined in all of the participants' narratives indicating a need to dismantle associative stigma. Strategies to enhance the public perception of psychiatric nursing and decrease associative stigma within the profession are described.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT Stigma towards psychiatry and people with serious mental illness (SMI) is prevalent among healthcare providers and can adversely affect patient care. Internalized stigma among nurses can affect personal self-care and limit help-seeking behaviours. Stigma around mental health nursing can adversely affect recruitment into this already underserved field. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE This is the first report on the adaptation and use in a nursing student sample of two widely used stigma-related instruments that have been normed among medical students. The attitudes to psychiatry (ATP-30) and the attitudes to mental illness (AMI) instruments proved sensitive to change and can be useful in tracking specific anti-stigma curricular interventions. Interactive and participatory student activities in courses such as ours (that include simulation with standardized patients, clinical placements and patient interaction) need to be complemented by exposure to individuals with lived experience with mental illness in order to address stigmatized views of SMI. Nursing educators and fellow nurses willing to share their own experiences with mental illness-including diagnosis, health-seeking, treatment and recovery-may prove especially powerful and germane during nursing school. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Even a strong academic curriculum is not sufficient to change stigmatized perceptions about mental illness, psychiatric care and mental health nursing as a profession. Comparison and potential synergy between ATP-30, AMI and OMS-HC (Opening Minds Scale for Health Care Providers) could prove fruitful in identifying a more comprehensive approach to stigma assessment over time. The addition of validated instruments, such as the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF) and the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help (SSOSH), which tap into internalized stigma and into health-seeking behaviours and intervening barriers could prove particularly useful in evaluating innovative interventions for stigma-decreasing initiatives in nursing education. Interactive and participatory didactic offerings need to be complemented by exposure to individuals with lived experience with mental illness and ideally to nursing educators and practicing nurses willing to share their histories of diagnosis, help-seeking, treatment and recovery. Aim/question We adapted two stigma-related instruments in a sample of nursing students and examined change in scores after participation in an eight-week preclinical psychiatry curriculum. Our goal was to identify stigma-malleable opportunities that would inform refinements in future iterations of a preclinical psychiatry curriculum in nursing. Method We made minor adaptations to the attitudes to psychiatry (ATP-30) and the attitudes to mental illness (AMI) instruments. We invited first-year nursing students to complete assessments at two time points: before and after completion of an eight-week core course in preclinical psychiatry. Results Seventy-one students completed the assessment at both time points. ATP-30 and three of its eight subscale scores improved by course's endpoint. By contrast, AMI scores did not change. Compared with medical student published norms, nursing students in our sample had higher (less stigmatized) average scores. Discussion The ATP-30 and the AMI can be easily adapted to a nursing student population and may prove useful in tracking specific anti-stigma educational interventions. Implications for practice A general psychiatry course during nursing school is, it and of itself, unlikely to change biased views about SMI and should be enhanced with exposure to, and interaction with individuals with lived experiences of mental illness, ideally by nurse educators and practicing nurses.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: People with mental health difficulties have poorer physical health than the general population. The stigmatizing attitude of health professionals impacts the quality of care for these people. There is a broad background on the effectiveness of activities based on theoretical training, clinical practices or social contact to improve nursing students' attitudes towards people with mental health difficulties. There is an important need to assess whether the benefits identified in the short term are maintained in the longer term. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The positive evolution of attitudes towards mental illness does not last over time. Some students' attitude towards people with a mental health difficulty worsened in the final stage of their training after completing clinical practices. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: It is necessary for tutors incorporate an understanding of stigma throughout the degree training and to discuss with the students the emotional aspects experienced during the performance of clinical practices. The design of any anti-stigma intervention must include the factor of "time". ABSTRACT: Introduction The stigma of health professionals is a contributing factor to morbi-mortality among people with mental health difficulties. There is a lack of research on long-term outcomes in nursing students. Objective To identify factors associated with the evolution of stigmatizing attitudes towards mental illness in a cohort of students trained in mental health. Method A prospective observational study of the impact of training in mental health care. Age, gender, stigma, level of previous familiarity with mental illness, self-education by Internet, academic performance and the place where practicums are conducted were evaluated on three occasions over 15 months. Results Academic performance, online consultation and the size or origin of the theoretical group were indicators of better attitudes. The positive evolution of attitudes does not last over time. Discussion Instability over time could be explained by students' experience in the practicum, although the time itself has been identified as a determining factor. Practical implications Further studies should be promoted in academia to assess the content of mental health training and its influence on the evolution of the stigmatizing attitude. It is also necessary to address stigma in small groups, where students with better academic results lead anti-stigma activities.

Abstract
Aim The aim was to describe the ways that nursing staff in psychiatric inpatient care understand nursing. Background Nursing in psychiatric care is marginalized with ambiguous role definitions and imperceptible activities. Nurse managers' capabilities to establish a direction and shared vision are crucial to motivate nursing staff to take part in practice development. However, before establishing a shared vision it is important to identify the different ways nursing can be understood. Methods Sixteen individual semi‐structured interviews with nursing staff members were analysed using a phenomenographic approach. Results Five ways of understanding nursing were identified. These understandings were interrelated based on the way that the patient, nursing interventions and the goal of nursing were understood. Conclusion The diversity of identified understandings illuminates the challenges of creating a shared vision of roles, values and goals for nursing. Implications for Nursing Management Awareness of staff members' different understandings of nursing can help nurse managers to establish a shared vision. To be useful, a shared vision has to be implemented together with clear role definitions, professional autonomy of nurses and support for professional development. Implementation of such measures serves as a foundation to make nursing visible and thereby enhance the quality of patient care.

Abstract
Providing nursing students with appropriate clinical practice during their undergraduate programme is critical to ensuring that graduates meet the competency requirements to gain registration as a nurse. In response to the predicted nursing workforce shortage, universities have been significantly increasing the enrolment of undergraduate nurses into Bachelor of Nursing courses. This has placed a demand on the availability of clinical placements and often universities struggle to find appropriate places. In this study, a Bachelor of Nursing course incorporated an Integrated Clinical Learning Model (ICLM) for the first time during a mental health placement. The model offered students the flexibility of attending their clinical placement over a 16-week period instead of a traditional block of 4 weeks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the student perspective of this model and whether it prepared them for the nursing workforce. Focus groups were conducted with undergraduate nursing students following their mental health clinical placement at an acute and extended care inpatient unit. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Main themes included preparedness for practice, maintaining a work-life balance, and perceiving they were part of a team. The ICLM deepened students' knowledge and had a positive impact on their overall clinical learning.

Abstract
Abstract Objective: To identify the opinions of primary care nurses regarding mental illness and the care provided to this population. Methodology: Cross-sectional, quantitative study with the participation of 328 nurses of primary health care in Porto, Portugal. Data collected between April and August of 2018 through the scale "Opinions about Mental Illness" and socio demographic and labor questionnaire. Descriptive and correlational statistics were applied. Results: A total of 50% of the nurses presented positive opinions about the mental illness. Regarding the assistance provided in their unit of action, 53.4% considered inadequate and 50.3% recognized as adequate their knowledge about the role that primary health care has in assisting the person with mental illness. Conclusion: Positive opinions and recognition of the importance of primary care to people with mental illness are important indicators for qualified mental health care outside the field of specialty.

Abstract
There have been many advances in harm reduction over the past three decades. One of the newest approaches is the provision of medical grade heroin to people with opiate addiction, known as opiate assisted treatment (OAT). There is one clinic in North America which provides this service. The goal of this study was to uncover how clinic staff provide care to those who attend this clinic, their perspectives on how the clinic program impacted them and their patients, and their opinions about the program itself. This was a qualitative study with an interpretive descriptive methodology underpinned by critical social theory. Convenience sampling yielded 22 participants - 18 nurses, two social workers and two peer support workers. Thematic analysis was undertaken to identify recurring, converging and contradictory patterns of interaction, key concepts and emerging themes. The study location was the OAT clinic located in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, BC. The findings were organized around the following six themes: from chaos to stability, it's not all roses, a little preparation would be good, putting the patient at the centre, the stigma hasn't gone away, and the clinic is life transforming. Taken together, these themes indicate the complexities of working in this environment. The findings can guide clinic staff, including nurses, in how they provide care to patients with addiction problems and also provide direction for policy makers on harm reduction planning. Abstract
Supervised clinical practice is an essential component of undergraduate nursing students' learning and development. In the mental health setting, nursing students traditionally undertake four-week block placements. An integrated clinical learning model, where preceptors mentor students on an individual basis, has been used successfully in the clinical learning environment. This flexible model provides the opportunity for students to work across morning, afternoon, night and weekend shifts. There is a need to improve the evidence base for a flexible model for students undertaking a mental health placement. The aim of this study was to understand preceptors' experience of, and satisfaction with, a mental health integrated clinical learning model. Focus groups were used to elicit the views of preceptors from a mental health service. Findings highlight the advantages and disadvantages of an integrated clinical learning model in the mental health setting. Participants suggested that students may benefit from flexible work arrangements, a variety of experiences and a more realistic experience of working in a mental health service. However, they found it challenging to mentor and evaluate students under this model. Most also agreed that the model impeded students' ability to engage with consumers and develop rapport with staff. The findings indicate the need to develop a placement model that meets the unique needs of the mental health setting.
