Toxigenic Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanobacteria) affects the population growth of two common green microalgae: Evidence of other allelopathic metabolites different to cyanotoxins

Interspecific competition enhances microcystin production by Microcystis aeruginosa under the interactive influences of temperature and nutrients

Global warming and eutrophication contribute to frequent occurrences of toxic algal blooms in freshwater systems globally, while there is a limited understanding of their combined impacts on toxin-producing algal species under interspecific competitions. This study investigated the influences of elevated temperatures, lights, nutrient enrichments and interspecific interactions on growth and microcystin (MC) productions of Microcystis aeruginosa in laboratory condition. Our results indicated that elevated temperatures and higher nutrient levels significantly boosted biomass and specific growth rates of Microcystis aeruginosa, which maintained a competitive edge over Chlorella sp. Specifically, with phosphorus levels between 0.10 and 0.70 mg P L-1, the growth rate of Microcystis aeruginosa in mixed cultures increased by 23 %-52 % compared to mono-cultures, while the growth rate of Chlorella sp. shifted from positive in mono-cultures to negative in mixed cultures. Redundancy and variance partition analyses suggested that Chlorella sp. stimulate MC production in Microcystis aeruginosa and nutrient levels outshine temperature for toxin productions during competition. Lotka‒Volterra model revealed a positive correlation between the intensities of competitions and MC concentration. Our findings indicate that future algal bloom mitigation strategies should consider combined influence of temperature, nutrients, and interspecific competition due to their synergistic effects on MC productions.

Allelopathic effects of cyanotoxins on the physiological responses of Chlorella vulgaris

Contributing to the assessment of potential physiological changes in microalgae subjected to different concentrations and types of cyanotoxins, this study investigated the inhibitory effects of cyanotoxins on the growth, density, biomass, and ecotoxicity of Chlorella vulgaris. Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to crude extracts of cyanobacteria producing microcystin-LR (MC-LR), saxitoxin (SXT), anatoxin-a (ATX-A), and cylindrospermopsin (CYN) with initial concentrations of 5.0, 2.05, 0.61, and 1.42 μg.L-1, respectively. The experiments were conducted under controlled conditions, and monitoring of growth and cell inhibition occurred at 24h, 48h, 72h, and 96h. Chlorophyll-a content and ecotoxicity assessment were conducted with samples collected after 96h of exposure to cyanotoxins. The growth assays of Chlorella vulgaris, with results expressed in terms of average growth rates (doublings/day), indicated the following order for cyanotoxins: SXT (2.03) > CYN (1.66) > MC-LR (1.56) > ATX-A (0.18). This assay revealed the prominent inhibitory potential of ATX-A on Chlorella vulgaris growth compared to the other toxins evaluated. Regarding the inhibition of the photosynthetic process, expressed in terms of the percentage inhibition of Chlorophyll-a, the following order for cyanotoxins was obtained: ATX-A (82%) > MC-LR (76%) > STX (46%) > CYN (16%). These results also indicated that among the cyanotoxins, ATX-A was the most detrimental to the photosynthetic process. However, contrary to the observations in the growth study, SXT proved to be more harmful than CYN in terms of Chlorophyll-a inhibition. Finally, the results of the toxicity assay revealed that only ATX-A and MC-LR exerted a chronic influence on Chlorella vulgaris under the investigated conditions.

Microalgae-mediated bioremediation: current trends and opportunities-a review

Environmental pollution poses a critical global challenge, and traditional wastewater treatment methods often prove inadequate in addressing the complexity and scale of this issue. On the other hand, microalgae exhibit diverse metabolic capabilities that enable them to remediate a wide range of pollutants, including heavy metals, organic contaminants, and excess nutrients. By leveraging the unique metabolic pathways of microalgae, innovative strategies can be developed to effectively remediate polluted environments. Therefore, this review paper highlights the potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods. It also highlights the advantages of utilizing microalgae and algae-bacteria co-cultures for large-scale bioremediation applications, demonstrating impressive biomass production rates and enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. The promising potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation is emphasized, presenting a viable and innovative alternative to traditional treatment methods in addressing the global challenge of environmental pollution. This review identifies the opportunities and challenges for microalgae-based technology and proposed suggestions for future studies to tackle challenges. The findings of this review advance our understanding of the potential of microalgae-based technology wastewater treatment.

Reviewing Interspecies Interactions as a Driving Force Affecting the Community Structure in Lakes via Cyanotoxins

The escalating occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms worldwide is a matter of concern. Global warming and eutrophication play a major role in the regularity of cyanobacterial blooms, which has noticeably shifted towards the predomination of toxic populations. Therefore, understanding the effects of cyanobacterial toxins in aquatic ecosystems and their advantages to the producers are of growing interest. In this paper, the current literature is critically reviewed to provide further insights into the ecological contribution of cyanotoxins in the variation of the lake community diversity and structure through interspecies interplay. The most commonly detected and studied cyanobacterial toxins, namely the microcystins, anatoxins, saxitoxins, cylindrospermopsins and β-N-methylamino-L-alanine, and their ecotoxicity on various trophic levels are discussed. This work addresses the environmental characterization of pure toxins, toxin-containing crude extracts and filtrates of single and mixed cultures in interspecies interactions by inducing different physiological and metabolic responses. More data on these interactions under natural conditions and laboratory-based studies using direct co-cultivation approaches will provide more substantial information on the consequences of cyanotoxins in the natural ecosystem. This review is beneficial for understanding cyanotoxin-mediated interspecies interactions, developing bloom mitigation technologies and robustly assessing the hazards posed by toxin-producing cyanobacteria to humans and other organisms.
