Abstract
Bacteria subjected to antiseptic or antibiotic stress often develop tolerance, a trait that can lead to permanent resistance. To determine whether photodynamic agents could be used to counter tolerance, we evaluated three non-iron hemin analogs (M-PpIX; M = Al, Ga, In) as targeted photosensitizers for antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) following exposure to sublethal H2O2. Al-PpIX is an active producer of ROS whereas Ga- and In-PpIX are more efficient at generating singlet oxygen. Al- and Ga-PpIX are highly potent aPDI agents against S. aureus and methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) with antimicrobial activity (3 log reduction in colony-forming units) at nanomolar concentrations. The aPDI activities of Al- and Ga-PpIX against S. aureus were tested in the presence of 1 mM H2O2 added at different stages of growth. Bacteria exposed to H2O2 during log-phase growth were less susceptible to aPDI but bacteria treated with H2O2 in their postgrowth phase exhibited aPDI hypersensitivity, with no detectable colony growth after treatment with 15 nM Ga-PpIX.

Abstract
This study compared the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) at 50 ppm and 200 ppm and 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) at various time intervals, in vitro. Cell viability and cytotoxicity of human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) were evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test and the lactate dehydrogenase assay. Antimicrobial effects on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Candida albicans were determined using the time-kill method. All solutions exhibited a significant impact on HGFs in a dose- and time-dependent manner. 50 ppm HOCl demonstrated the highest cell viability, followed by 200 ppm HOCl. Both HOCl solutions were less cytotoxic to HGFs than 0.2% CHX. 50 ppm and 200 ppm HOCl demonstrated stronger efficiencies than CHX against A. actinomycetemcomitans and C. albicans. The data suggest that HOCl solutions have potential as an alternative antiseptic to CHX due to their lower cytotoxicity and superior antimicrobial activity, but optimal dosage of HOCl requires further investigations.

Abstract
Background The application of herbal and/or chemical antimicrobial mouthwashes in addition to the mechanical methods of bacteria removal helps reduce the periopathogens and thus increase the periodontal tissues' health. The present study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Thymex (TMX) syrup on three periodontal facultative anaerobes in vitro and compare it with 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash. Methods In this in vitro experiment, the disc diffusion method was used to measure the inhibitory halo diameter (IhD) of Enterobacter cloacae, Actinomyces viscosus, and Eikenella corrodens. The paper discs containing TMX and CHX were placed on Mueller-Hinton agar media and cultured with the mentioned bacteria. Moreover, a blank disc containing distilled water was used as a control. From each of the three bacterial species, five samples were taken, and after 18 hours of storage in the incubator, the IhDs were measured in millimeters. A one-way ANOVA test and an independent sample t-test were used to compare the mean differences of IhDs between groups. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results The IhDs ranged between 6.2-8.8 mm and 12.3-34 mm for TMX and CHX, respectively. CHX showed a more inhibitory effect on all three species of bacteria compared to TMX mouthwash (P < 0.001). Conclusions Despite the inhibitory effect of TMX on bacterial growth, CHX showed significantly more antibacterial activity than TMX against three studied bacterial species.

Abstract
The use of light-emitting diode (LED)-based photodynamic therapies in the treatment of periodontitis is increasing because these modalities are effective, safe, and painless. They are not subject to acquired drug resistance or environmental issues and are associated with no complications when used appropriately. These light sources have also been used in combination with pharmacological measures to synergize their effects and optimize therapeutic outcomes. This review focuses on optical devices used in treating periodontitis and delineates the current applications of various methods, including their utility and efficacy. The application of LEDs in periodontology is described.

Abstract
The oral microbiome, forming a biofilm that covers the oral structures, contains a high number of microorganisms. Biofilm formation starts from the salivary pellicle that allows bacterial adhesion–colonization–proliferation, co-aggregation and biofilm maturation in a complex microbial community. There is a constant bidirectional crosstalk between human host and its oral microbiome. The paper presents the fundamentals regarding the oral microbiome and its relationship to modulator factors, oral and systemic health. The modern studies of oral microorganisms and relationships with the host benefits are based on genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Pharmaceuticals such as antimicrobials, prebiotics, probiotics, surface active or abrasive agents and plant-derived ingredients may influence the oral microbiome. Many studies found associations between oral dysbiosis and systemic disorders, including autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular, diabetes, cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. We outline the general and individual factors influencing the host–microbial balance and the possibility to use the analysis of the oral microbiome in prevention, diagnosis and treatment in personalized medicine. Future therapies should take in account the restoration of the normal symbiotic relation with the oral microbiome.

Abstract
In the present study, the clinical outcomes obtained using three different protocols of post-operative plaque control for the 4 weeks after surgery were compared. Thirty healthy subjects, presenting at least one periodontal pocket requiring resective surgery, were selected and randomly distributed to three different groups corresponding to respective post-surgical protocols: (A) toothbrushes + chlorhexidine + anti-discoloration system (ADS + CHX); (B) toothbrushes + chlorhexidine (CHX); (C) only toothbrushes. The full-mouth plaque score (FMPS), full-mouth bleeding score (FMBS), probing pocket depth (PPD), recession depth (REC), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BoP) were measured in six aspects per tooth (mesio-buccal (MB), buccal (B), disto-buccal (DB), disto-lingual (DL), lingual (L), and mesio-lingual (ML)) at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. FMPS and FMBS did not significantly change (p > 0.05), whereas PPD and CAL significantly decreased, and REC significantly increased in all groups during the study (p < 0.05). Clinical results were satisfactory in all cases, with no significant differences between groups 3 months after surgery. Six months after surgery, only PPD-MB was significantly different in the three groups (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, this value was not clinically relevant because the value of PPD-B (about 2 mm) in group C was physiologic. The mechanical plaque control was proven to be fundamental and sufficient in all the six aspects per tooth to guarantee an excellent clinical outcome without the need of chemical plaque control.

Abstract
Long before the nature of infection was recognized, or the significance of biofilms in delayed healing was understood, antimicrobial agents were being used in wound care. In the last 70 years, antibiotics have provided an effective means to control wound infection, but the continued emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains and the documented antibiotic tolerance of biofilms has reduced their effectiveness. A range of wound dressings containing an antimicrobial (antibiotic or non-antibiotic compound) has been developed. Whereas standardized methods for determining the efficacy of non-antibiotic antimicrobials in bacterial suspension tests were developed in the early twentieth century, standardized ways of evaluating the efficacy of antimicrobial dressings against microbial suspensions and biofilms are not available. Resistance to non-antibiotic antimicrobials and cross-resistance with antibiotics has been reported, but consensus on breakpoints is absent and surveillance is impossible. Antimicrobial stewardship is therefore in jeopardy. This review highlights these difficulties and in particular the efficacy of current non-antibiotic antimicrobials used in dressings, their efficacy, and the challenges of translating in vitro efficacy data to the efficacy of dressings in patients. This review calls for a unified approach to developing standardized methods of evaluating antimicrobial dressings that will provide an improved basis for practitioners to make informed choices in wound care.

Abstract
This work compared the inhibition effect of the commercially available mouthwash Corsodyl, containing 0.1% chlorhexidine digluconate, and photodynamic inactivation (PDI) employing methylene blue (MB) with irradiation from a red laser on 24-h biofilms formed by Streptococcus mutans strains on hydroxyapatite surfaces. The cytotoxicity of Corsodyl and MB was evaluated by Galleria mellonella surviving assay. The viability of biofilm cells after exposure to mouthwash and PDI was determined by counting colony-forming units. The inhibitory effect of antimicrobial agents was confirmed by confocal scanning laser microscopy. MB did not exhibit a cytotoxic effect on larval survival. Non-diluted Corsodyl slightly decreased the survival of larvae. Using our PDI parameters achieved better inhibition than with non-PDI, proving a significant effect on the eradication of S. mutans biofilms and therefore could be an appropriate supplement for the eradication of dental caries.

Abstract
As a toxic element, excessive amounts of fluoride in environment can be harmful because of its antimicrobial activity, however little is known about the relationship between fluoride and the bacterial community in groundwater systems. Here, we use samples from a typical fluorosis area to test the hypothesis that fluoride concentration is a fundamental structuring factor for bacterial communities in groundwater. Thirteen groundwater samples were collected; high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and statistical analysis were conducted to compare the bacterial community composition in individual wells. The results showed that Proteobacteria, with most relative abundance in groundwater, decreased along the groundwater fluoride concentration. Additionally, relative abundances of 12 families were also statistically correlated with fluoride concentration. The bacterial community was significantly explained by TOC (P = 0.045) and fluoride concentration (P = 0.007) of groundwater. This suggests that fluoride and TOC likely plays an important role in shaping the microbial community structure in these groundwater systems. Our research suggest that fluoride concentration should be taken into consideration in future when evaluating microbial response to environmental conditions in groundwater system, especially for fluoride rich groundwater.

Abstract
This study aimed at comparing the cytotoxicity of a new octenidine mouth rinse (MR) on gingival fibroblasts and epithelial cells using different established MRs. Octenidol (OCT), Chlorhexidine 0.2% (CHX), Meridol (MER), Oral B (OB), and control (PBS only) were used. Human primary gingival fibroblasts (HGFIBs) and human primary nasal epithelial cells (HNEPCs) were cultivated in cell-specific media (2 × 105 cells/well) and treated with a MR or PBS for 1, 5, and 15 min. All tests were performed in duplicate and repeated 12 times. The apoptosis and necrosis were determined using a Caspase-3/7 assay and LDH assay, respectively. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance with subsequent Mann-Whitney U-test. No significant differences could be found between the incubation times of the MR, neither for apoptosis nor necrosis (p > 0.05). Regarding apoptosis of HGFIBs, MRs had no influence at all. In HNEPCs, OCT induced relevantly lower apoptosis than CHX (p = 0.01). Considering necrosis, MER showed the lowest numbers of necrotic HGFIBs and HNEPCs, whereas OB induced the highest number of necrotic cells. The differences between both MR were statistically relevant (p < 0.01). OCT did neither differ from the other MRs nor from the control (PBS) in induction of necrosis in both cell types. In conclusion, the slightly negative effect of OCT considering apoptosis and necrosis of HGFIBs and HNEPCs is nearly the same or even lower compared to the established MRs included in this study. The results confirm that OCT is a potential alternative to CHX.
