Abstract
AIM To evaluate the association between baseline starch intake (amount and sources) and changes in periodontal status over 11 years in adults. METHODS Adults aged 30-82 years, who participated in the Finnish Health 2000 survey and were re-examined in 2004/2005 and/or 2011 were included in the study. The consumption of total starch and six relevant food groups (potatoes, fried potatoes, roots and tubers, pasta, wholegrains and legumes) over the past year was determined at baseline with a validated food frequency questionnaire. The number of teeth with periodontal pocketing ≥ 4 mm (NTPP) was recorded during clinical examinations in 2000, 2004/2005 and 2011. The association between baseline starch intake and the 11-year change in the NTPP was tested in mixed-effects negative binomial regression models, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS A total of 1369 adults were included in the analysis. The mean NTPP was 4.1 ± 5.6, 6.3 ± 5.6, and 4.8 ± 5.9 in waves 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Baseline starch intake (in g/day or % energy intake) was not associated with changes in the NTPP after adjustment for covariates. In analysis by food groups, the baseline intake of wholegrains was negatively associated with the NTPP at baseline. CONCLUSION This study found no evidence of an association between baseline starch intake and changes in periodontal status. Baseline intake of wholegrains was associated with better periodontal status at baseline.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a severe oral health condition that affects the soft tissue and bone supporting the teeth. The Mediterranean diet has been proposed as a potential contributor to reducing the risk of periodontitis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to explore the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and periodontitis. A comprehensive literature search from 1992 to January 2024 was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The included studies were clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies that evaluated the impact of the Mediterranean diet on periodontitis. Data extraction and quality assessment of the included studies were performed using standardized protocols. A meta-analysis was conducted to combine effect sizes from multiple studies. This review included seven studies, comprising one cohort study, five cross-sectional studies, and one randomized controlled trial. While some studies reported a potential link between Mediterranean diet adherence and periodontitis, the overall analysis did not demonstrate a significant association. The meta-analysis revealed an Odds Ratio (95 % Confidence Interval) of 0.77 (0.58, 1.03) for the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and periodontitis (p = 0.08). This systematic review and meta-analysis found no statistically significant association between periodontitis and Mediterranean diet adherence. Future research should prioritize the implementation of rigorous clinical studies with longer follow-up periods to better understand the causal association between the Mediterranean diet and periodontitis. Observational studies with larger sample sizes are needed to establish more conclusive evidence regarding the impact of dietary patterns on periodontal health.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to compare the effectiveness of "omega-3 fatty acids" as an auxiliary to "scaling and root planing (SRP)" with traditional "scaling and root planing" in periodontal treatment in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is a randomized control trial and was carried out over a period of 3 months (registered on 02/07/2023). Thirty patients were singled out according to the inclusion criteria, each having periodontitis (Stage II Grade B), and were arbitrarily distributed into two groups (control and test). The test group was treated with "scaling and root planing" along with the adjunctive application of "omega-3 fatty acids" while the control group was treated with "scaling and root planing" alone. Monthly follow-up was carried out over 90 days. Clinical parameters such as pocket probing depth (PPD), gingival index (GI), bleeding index (BI), and plaque index (PI) were measured respectively at baseline and 3 months. The data was recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS The soft tissue architecture remained stable. The mean full mouth plaque index (FMPI) score was statistically significant (p < 0.001) when the control group was compared to the test group with a mean difference of 0.12 ± 0.02. The mean full mouth papillary bleeding index (FMPBI) score decreased at 3 months and was statistically significant compared to baseline with a mean difference of 0.24 ± 0.04 (p < 0.001). When the test group was compared with the control group, the FMGI was not significant (p = 0.02), with a mean difference of 0.16 ± 0.19. The PPD was not significant (p =1) when comparing both the groups, with a mean difference of 0 ± 0.66. Although the clinical parameters were statistically significant at 3 months when compared to baseline in both the groups, the FMGI and PPD were not significant. CONCLUSION The combined action of using omega-3 fatty acid as an auxiliary to conventional scaling and root planing improved the periodontal parameters including both the soft and hard tissue outcomes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The present study indicated that supplementary usage of omega-3 fatty acids is more beneficial for treating chronic and mild periodontitis than scaling and root planing alone. Omega-3 fatty acids can be used as energy for our cells, reduce the risk of blood clotting, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and reduce inflammation. Host modulatory therapy (HMT) with omega-3 fatty acids aims at reducing inflammation. With HMT as an adjunct, a better result of periodontal therapy was expected. Abstract
Background The oral microbiome is a complex and dynamic assemblage of microorganisms that colonize different sites of the oral cavity maintaining both oral and systemic health. Therefore, when its composition is altered, oral diseases occur. Among oral inflammatory pathologies, periodontal diseases affect the tissues surrounding the teeth, representing the main cause of tooth loss and one of the most important threats to the oral health. Lifestyle and eating habits influence the composition of the human oral microbiota and the development and progression of oral diseases. In this context, the Mediterranean Diet (MD) model, comprising both healthy dietary choices and lifestyle, is linked to the prevention of several metabolic and chronic-degenerative pathological processes, including oral diseases. Indeed, the MD is a plant-based diet, enriched of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients, which may induce beneficial effects against dental caries and periodontal diseases. Aim This review summarizes the role of the oral microbiome in the development of the oral diseases and the potential of MD in modulating the oral microbiome leading to implications for oral health. Conclusions The data collected highlight the need to promote the MD pattern along with the correct hygiene habits to prevent the development of oral diseases.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between food choices and periodontal health status (PHS) in adults who receive care through a public health system. We evaluated food preferences and periodontal status in a sample of 442 individuals with at least eight natural teeth. We employed the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess food choices and the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) instrument to evaluate periodontal health status during clinical appointments. Fisher's discriminant analysis was used to differentiate the participants according to PHS severity within three age-ranges (18-39; 40-59 and > 60 years-old). The results showed that the prevalence of overweight/obesity was high in all age groups (above 65%), and BMI increased with age, accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases. A lower preference for natural foods and a higher intake of processed and ultra-processed foods, along with a high waist circumference and diabetes, were associated with a poorer periodontal health status. In the 18-39 age group, a lower waist circumference was associated with healthier periodontal status. In the 40-59 age group, a worse periodontal status resulted from a higher frequency of diabetes, lower intake of green leafy vegetables, olive oil, and fruit, and higher intake of industrialized juice. Conversely, a healthier periodontal status was associated with a lower frequency of diabetes and higher intake of fruit and vegetables. In the > 60age group, the worst periodontal status was associated with male sex. Overall, the study highlights the possible beneficial role of a healthy diet in maintaining periodontal health, particularly for those who receive care through a public health system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the recognized impact of diet on non-communicable diseases, the association between the Mediterranean diet and periodontal diseases is still uncertain. This study aimed to determine the association between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Index (MDI) and self-reported gingival health status in Chilean adults, exploring the feasibility of using validated web-based survey questionnaires. METHODOLOGY Cross-sectional data were collected from a representative sample of a population of Chilean adults (18-60 years old) using a low-cost and time-saving methodology. By the PsyToolkit platform, anonymous survey data were downloaded and analyzed in bivariate (crude) and backward stepwise selection multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for sociodemographic determinants, smoking, and dental attendance using STATA 17. Odds ratios (OR) [95% confidence intervals] were estimated. RESULTS In total, 351 complete statistical data were mostly obtained from female university students who had never smoked and reported having visited a dentist in the previous year. Multivariate regression models showed an association between MDI and very good/good gingival health status (OR 1.18 [95% CI 1.04-1.34], p=0.013), absence of bleeding on toothbrushing (OR 1.12 [95% CI 1.01-1.25], p=0.035), and absence of clinical signs of gingival inflammation (OR 1.24 [95% CI 1.10-1.40], p<0.001), after controlling for age, sex, educational level, smoking, and dental attendance. CONCLUSIONS We associated adherence to the Mediterranean diet with better self-reported gingival health status in a population of Chilean adults in an entirely web-based research environment. Longitudinal studies with random sampling are required to establish the effect of diet on gingival and periodontal health. Nevertheless, this evidence could contribute to the design of low-cost surveillance programs to reduce the burden of periodontal disease and related "common risk factors".
