Notch signalling cascade and proinflammatory mediators in peri-implant lesions with different RANKL/OPG ratios-An observational study

Fermented foods and probiotic consumption frequency as protective indicators for peri-implant diseases - a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Due to their modulatory effect on biofilm growth, bacterial gene expressions, and host-modulation effects, fermented foods and probiotic products could potentially have a protective role against peri-implant diseases. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association of consumption of fermented foods and products containing probiotics, with peri-implant health and diseases.

METHODS

A total of 126 implants were included. The peri-implant health status (peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implant health) was assessed through Chicago's Classification of periodontal and peri-implant Diseases and Conditions. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the consumption patterns of fermented and probiotic foods and product. One-way ANOVA was employed to compare the 3 peri-implant conditions categories in terms of fermented food and probiotic consumption.

RESULTS

There were significant differences in the daily and general consumption of yogurt, probiotic yogurt, kefir, ayran, vinegar, pomegranate syrup, whole meal bread, and homemade butter among peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implant health (p < 0.05). The peri-implant health group consumed significantly more yogurt, kefir, ayran, vinegar, whole wheat bread, and homemade butter than peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.

CONCLUSION

A higher consumption of fermented and probiotic foods may be associated with peri-implant health. Fermented and probiotic products may be useful for prevention of peri-implant diseases in patients with implants.

[Research Progress in the Molecular Regulatory Mechanisms of Alveolar Bone Restoration]

Alveolar bone, the protruding portion of the maxilla and the mandible that surrounds the roots of teeth, plays an important role in tooth development, eruption, and masticatory performance. In oral inflammatory diseases, including apical periodontitis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis, alveolar bone defects cause the loosening or loss of teeth, impair the masticatory function, and endanger the physical and mental health of patients. However, alveolar bone restoration is confronted with great clinical challenges due to the the complicated effect of the biological, mechanical, and chemical factors in the oral microenvironment. An in-depth understanding of the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms will contribute to the exploration of new targets for alveolar bone restoration. Recent studies have shown that Notch, Wnt, Toll-like receptor (TLR), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathways regulate the proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and autophagy of osteoclasts, osteoblasts, osteocytes, periodontal ligament cells, macrophages, and adaptive immune cells, modulate the expression of inflammatory mediators, affect the balance of the receptor activator for nuclear factor-κB ligand/receptor activator for nuclear factor-κB/osteoprotegerin (RANKL/RANK/OPG) system, and ultimately participate in alveolar bone restoration. Additionally, alveolar bone restoration involves AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), phosphatidyl inositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT), Hippo/YAP, Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT), and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling pathways. However, current studies have failed to construct mature molecular regulatory networks for alveolar bone restoration. There is an urgent need for further research on the molecular regulatory mechanisms of alveolar bone restoration by using new technologies such as single-cell transcriptome sequencing and spatial transcriptome sequencing.

Efficacy of a Solution Containing 33% Trichloroacetic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide in Decontaminating Machined vs. Sand-Blasted Acid-Etched Titanium Surfaces

This in vitro study assessed the efficacy of a solution containing 33% trichloroacetic acid (CCl3COOH; TCA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in decontaminating machined (MAC) and sand-blasted acid-etched (SBAE) titanium surfaces. A total of 80 titanium disks were prepared (40 MAC and 40 SBAE). Streptococcus sanguinis and Enterococcus faecalis strains were incubated on 36 samples, while the remaining 44 were kept as controls. Roughness analysis and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the surface features before and after TCAH2O2 treatment. The viability of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) after TCAH2O2 decontamination was assessed with a chemiluminescent assay along with cell morphology through fluorescent staining. TCAH2O2 preserved the surface topography of MAC and SBAE specimens. It also effectively eradicated bacteria on both types of specimens without altering the surface roughness (p > 0.05). Also, no significant differences in protein adsorption between the pristine and TCAH2O2-treated surfaces were found (p = 0.71 and p = 0.94). While ASC proliferation remained unchanged on MAC surfaces, a decrease was observed on the decontaminated SBAE specimens at 24 and 48 h (p < 0.05), with no difference at 72 h (p > 0.05). Cell morphology showed no significant changes after 72 h on both surface types even after decontamination. This study suggests TCAH2O2 as a promising decontamination agent for titanium surfaces, with potential implications for peri-implant health and treatment outcomes.
