Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is essentially a disorder of the valve, the progression of the disease leads to structural myocardial changes that may compromise left ventricular systolic function. Tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD) is a surrogate for longitudinal fiber function based on speckle tracking assessment of the movement of the mitral annulus toward the apex during systole. The aim of this study was to evaluate longitudinal systolic function with TMAD in dogs with DMVD. ANIMALS Ninety-four dogs with DMVD and 32 healthy dogs. METHODS Prospective cross-sectional observational study. Dogs with DMVD of various American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine classification stages and healthy control dogs underwent physical examination, electrocardiography, systolic blood pressure measurement, as well as a standard and speckle tracking echocardiography. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) and TMAD were used to assess longitudinal systolic function. RESULTS The global TMADmm and global TMAD% were higher in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine B2 animals than in the stage CD. Global TMAD (mm/kg,mm/bodyweight3, mm/m2) were correlated with GLS and ejection fraction. Global TMAD (mm/kg,mm/m2,%) and GLS were influenced by sex. In addition, systolic blood pressure influenced GLS (P < 0.01; r = -0.23), global TMADmm/kg (P = 0.017; r = -0.21) and global TMADmm/m2 (P = 0.031; r = -0.19). Tissue motion annular displacement was fast to be performed and produced good repeatability in dogs with DMVD. CONCLUSIONS Global TMAD (mm,%), was reduced in DMVD dogs with clinical signs of heart failure compared with stage B2. Tissue motion annular displacement was shown to be a repeatable technique for evaluation of longitudinal systolic function in dogs with DMVD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Parvoviral enteritis (PVE) can cause either primary or secondary myocardial injury; the latter is associated with systemic inflammatory response syndrome and sepsis. Strain (St) and strain rate (SR) are relatively new speckle tracking echocardiographic (STE) variables used to assess myocardial function and are less influenced by preload and volume status than are conventional variables. The aim of this study was to evaluate systolic function in dogs with PVE using two-dimensional STE. ANIMALS Forty-five client-owned dogs were included. MATERIALS AND METHODS Dogs were classified into four groups: healthy (n = 9), PVE-mild (n = 15), PVE-severe (n = 13) and PVE-died (n = 8). Left ventricular global and segmental myocardial St and SR were assessed in radial, circumferential and longitudinal axes in the right parasternal transverse and apical 4-chamber views. In the circumferential and longitudinal axes, the value of each segment was determined separately at the endocardial and epicardial levels. RESULTS Compared to healthy animals, all dogs with PVE showed significantly impaired St and SR values, mainly for PVE-severe and PVE-died groups. Moreover, the lowest SR value was observed in the circumferential axis at the mid-septal epicardial segment in the PVE-died group. For this variable, a cut-off value of 0.95 s-1 demonstrated 100% sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing between PVE-severe and PVE-died groups. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, all dogs with PVE developed systolic dysfunction, which was more severe in non-survivors. Assessment of St and SR in dogs with PVE might be clinically useful for evaluating haemodynamic status and developing suitable therapeutic strategies to improve prognosis.

Abstract
Background The effective arterial elastance (Ea) to left ventricular (LV) end‐systolic elastance (Ees) ratio (Ea/Ees) is an index of the interaction between LV and systemic arterial systems, left ventricular‐arterial coupling (VAC). The Ea is an index of total arterial load of the LV, whereas Ees is an index of LV systolic function. In humans, inappropriate VAC based on increased Ea/Ees estimated using echocardiography is associated with more advanced heart disease severity. Hypothesis Left ventricular‐arterial coupling assessed by echocardiographic estimation of Ea/Ees is associated with disease severity in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Animals Ninety MMVD dogs and 61 healthy dogs. Methods Prospective cross‐sectional study. The MMVD dogs were classified into stages B1, B2, or C according to American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines. Effective arterial elastance was echocardiographically estimated using the formula: mean blood pressure/(forward stroke volume/body weight). End‐systolic elastance was echocardiographically estimated using the formula: mean blood pressure/(LV end‐systolic volume/body weight). The ratio Ea/Ees was calculated. Results The ratio Ea/Ees was higher in stage B2 dogs than in healthy dogs and dogs stage B1 (both P < .0001), and higher in stage C dogs than in healthy dogs and dogs in the other 2 stages (healthy vs C and B1 vs C, P < .0001; B2 vs C, P = .0005). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that Ea/Ees and the peak velocity of early diastolic transmitral flow to isovolumic relaxation time ratio were independent predictors of stage C among echocardiographic indices in MMVD dogs. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Inappropriate VAC assessed by echocardiographically estimated Ea/Ees is associated with advanced disease severity in dogs with MMVD.

Abstract
RESUMO O desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas, como a ecocardiografia bidimensional feature tracking (2D-FTI), permite diagnosticar, de forma precoce, se há disfunção miocárdica em doenças cardíacas, inclusive as congênitas. O defeito septal ventricular (DSV) é a alteração congênita mais observada em felinos, no entanto pouco se sabe sobre a disfunção cardíaca nessa cardiopatia, especialmente em animais assintomáticos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio do 2D-FTI, a deformação miocárdica ventricular esquerda pela mensuração dos índices ecocardiográficos strain (St) e strain rate (StR) radial, circunferencial e longitudinal, em gatos saudáveis e com DSV. Foram avaliados 12 gatos saudáveis e seis gatos com DSV para obtenção de St e StR em diversos segmentos miocárdicos. No sentido longitudinal, houve diferença estatística (P<0,05) para os segmentos septal basal, mediano e apical epicárdicos (P=0,0017; P<0,0001; P=0,0288), lateral mediano epicárdico (P=0,0327), septal mediano endocárdico (P=0,0035), lateral mediano endocárdico (P=0,0461), St epicárdico (P=0,0250) e St global (P=0,0382). Também houve diferença no segmento lateral mediano circunferencial endocárdico (P=0,0248), lateral mediano radial (St: P=0,0409; StR: P=0,0166) e posterior mediano radial (P=0,0369). O estudo evidenciou que, mesmo em animais assintomáticos com DSV, há redução na deformação miocárdica ventricular principalmente no sentido longitudinal, demonstrando maior vulnerabilidade dessas fibras.

Abstract
Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is a widespread method for calculating myocardial strains and estimating left ventricle function. Since echocardiographic clips are corrupted by speckle decorrelation noise, resulting in irregular, nonphysiological tissue displacement fields, smoothing is performed on the displacement data, affecting the strain results. Thus, strain results may depend on the specific implementations of 2-D STE, as well as other systems' characteristics of the various vendors. A novel algorithm (called K-SAD) is introduced, which integrates the physiological constraint of smoothness of the displacement field into an optimization process. Simulated B-mode clips, modeling healthy and abnormal cases, were processed by K-SAD. Peak global and subendocardial longitudinal strains, as well as regional strains, were calculated. In addition, 410 healthy subjects were also processed. The results of K-SAD are compared with those of one of the leading commercial product. K-SAD provides global mid-wall strain values, as well as subendocardial and regional strain values, all in good agreement with the ground-truth-simulated phantom data. K-SAD peak global longitudinal systolic strain values for 410 healthy subjects are quite similar for the different regions: - 17.02 ± 4.02%, - 19.00 ± 3.45%, and - 19.72 ± 5.06% at the basal, mid, and apical regions, respectively. Improved performance under noisy conditions was demonstrated by comparing a subgroup of 40 subjects with the best image quality with the remaining 370 cohort: K-SAD provides statistically similar global and regional results for the two cohorts. Our study indicates that the sensitivity of strain values to speckle noise, caused by the post block-matching weighted smoothing, can be significantly reduced and accuracy enhanced by employing an integrated one-stage, physiologically constrained optimization process.
