Abstract
AIMS To investigate the risk factors for neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and develop an internally validated predictive nomogram. The study aims to offer insights for preventing AIS-NLUTD. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study on AIS patients in a Shenzhen Hospital from June 2021 to February 2023, categorizing them into non-NLUTD and NLUTD groups. The bivariate analysis identified factors for AIS-NLUTD (p < 0.05), integrated into a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model. Significant variables from LASSO were used in a multivariate logistic regression for the predictive model, resulting in a nomogram. Nomogram performance and clinical utility were evaluated through receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve (CIC). Internal validation used 1000 bootstrap resamplings. RESULTS A total of 373 participants were included in this study, with an NLUTD incidence rate of 17.7% (66/373). NIHSS score (OR = 1.254), pneumonia (OR = 6.631), GLU (OR = 1.240), HGB (OR = 0.970), and hCRP (OR = 1.021) were used to construct a predictive model for NLUTD in AIS patients. The model exhibited good performance (AUC = 0.899, calibration curve p = 0.953). Internal validation of the model demonstrated strong discrimination and calibration abilities (AUC = 0.898). Results from DCA and CIC curves indicated that the prediction model had high clinical utility. CONCLUSIONS We developed a predictive model for AIS-NLUTD and created a nomogram with strong predictive capabilities, assisting healthcare professionals in evaluating NLUTD risk among AIS patients and facilitating early intervention.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study identified risk factors for neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) through multidimensional analysis of the medical records of patients, aiming to reduce the incidence of NLUTD, improve prognosis, and facilitate rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this case-control study, patients with AIS were recruited from two tertiary general hospitals in Shenzhen, China, from March 2021 to October 2023. Patients were divided into NLUTD and non-NLUTD groups based on the presence and absence of NLUTD, respectively. Comparative analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests, with significant variables being included in logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Of the 652 participants enrolled in this study, 119 participants (18.3%) developed NLUTD. Bivariate analysis showed that 39 of 54 screened factors exhibited a significant correlation (p<0.05) with the incidence of NLUTD after AIS. Significant variables identified through logistic regression analysis included Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, anemia, aphasia, pneumonia, brainstem involvement, multiple lesions, urine clarity (CLA), random venous blood glucose (GLU) and hemoglobin (HGB) levels, and white blood cell (WBC) count. CONCLUSIONS A total of 11 risk factors for NLUTD were identified in this study. This finding provides valuable guidance for reducing the incidence of NLUTD after AIS and improving the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
Aging and major chronic diseases are risk factors for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). On the other hand, oxidative stress (OS) is one of the fundamental mechanisms of aging and the development of chronic diseases. Therefore, OS might be a candidate mechanism linking these two clinical entities. This article aims to summarize the studies on the prevalence of LUTS, the role of OS in aging and chronic diseases, and the potential mechanisms supporting the putative link. A comprehensive literature search was performed to identify recent reports investigating LUTS and OS in major chronic diseases. In addition, studies on the impact of OS on the lower urinary tract, including bladder, urethra, and prostate, were collected and summarized. Many studies showed LUTS are prevalent in aging and major chronic diseases, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. At the same time, OS is a key component in the pathogenesis of those chronic diseases and conditions. Recent studies also provided evidence that exacerbated OS can cause functional and/or structural changes in the bladder, urethra, and prostate, leading to LUTS. The reviewed data support the concept that OS is involved in multiple risk factors-associated LUTS, although further studies are needed to confirm the causative relationship. The specific ROS/RNS and corresponding reactions/pathways involved in chronic diseases and associated LUTS should be identified in the future and could serve as therapeutic targets.

Abstract
CONTEXT Nocturia is among the most common and bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), but there is no clear consensus on how to identify and manage this symptom in the neurological population. OBJECTIVE To systematically review the literature about nocturia in neurological patients. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Studies were identified by electronic search of Cochrane and Medline databases. The studies were included if their participants had acquired neurological pathology among multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), and reported data on the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnosis, or treatment of nocturia. An independent extraction of the articles was performed by two authors using predetermined datasets, including quality-of-study indicators. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS A total of 132 studies were included; 46 evaluated the epidemiology of nocturia, 28 the possible aetiologies, 10 the diagnostic tools, and 60 the treatments. Nocturia prevalence ranged from 15% to 96% depending on the pathology and definition used. It was one of the most frequently reported LUTS in PD and stroke patients. Several validated questionnaires were found to screen for nocturia in this population. Causalities were numerous: LUT, renal, sleep, cardiovascular dysfunctions, etc. Treatments targeted these mechanisms, with an overall risk of bias assessed as high or serious. The highest level of evidence was seen in MS patients: pelvic floor muscle training, cannabinoids, and desmopressin were effective, but not melatonin. In stroke patients, transcutaneous sacral and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) improved nocturia; in PD patients, TTNS, solifenacin, and rotigotine did not. CONCLUSIONS Nocturia is highly prevalent in patients with neurological disorders. Causalities and treatments are not different from the general population, but are poorly studied in neurological patients. PATIENT SUMMARY In this report, we looked at the published studies about nocturia-the fact of waking to void during the hours of sleep-in patients with neurological diseases. We found that nocturia is very frequent in this population, that the causes are the same as in the general population but may be combined, and that treatments are also the same but have an overall weak level of evidence. We conclude that more research is needed on this topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There is a scarcity of large population-based studies investigating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) in stroke survivors. We investigated the prevalence and severity of LUTS in male stroke survivors and determined the independent effect of stroke on LUTS using data from a nationwide population-based survey. METHODS Cross-sectional data obtained from the 2011 Korean Community Health Survey were analyzed. The prevalence and severity of LUTS were compared between 1936 male stroke patients and 90,506 male non-stroke participants. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the independent effect of stroke on LUTS. RESULTS Male stroke patients more frequently reported both storage symptoms (frequency, urgency, and nocturia) and voiding symptoms (straining, weak stream, intermittency, and incomplete emptying) compared to male non-stroke population. The storage and voiding subscores of IPSS and quality of life score were higher in male stroke patients than in male non-stroke population. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for age, socioeconomic factors, physical and mental health measures, and comorbidities, found stroke to be an independent risk factor for all 7 symptoms of LUTS. CONCLUSION The present study confirmed a high prevalence of LUTS in male stroke survivors that cannot be attributed only to potential confounders, implying that stroke may independently contribute to the development of LUTS. Our findings warrant the need for timely detection by physicians and proper management of LUTS to promote functional outcomes and quality of life in stroke population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Contemporary studies examine the connection of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) with Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), alone or associated with other factors of the metabolic syndrome. However, little research has occurred concerning patients with diabetes of both genders and sexes without other diseases of the lower urinary tract. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between DM and LUTS. METHODS The study enrolled 110 patients with DM and 134 healthy individuals. The IPSS questionnaire was used for the evaluation of symptoms from lower urinary tract. Data was analyzed with univariate and multivariate logistic regression using SPSS v.24. RESULTS Analysis with moderate/severe LUTS as dependent variable and plausible confounding factors (age group, BMI, hypertension, dyslipidemia, years with DM and reported HbA1c) as covariates revealed that only HbA1c levels correlated independently with the presence of moderate/severe LUTS (p = 0,024, OR:2,729, CI:1,144-6,509) in diabetic women, while there was no statistically significant difference between male groups. HbA1c levels' correlation with IPSS-voiding and IPSS- storage score was not statistically significant. Quality of life is also affected in women with diabetes mellitus (p: 0,02). CONCLUSION Only an increase in HbA1c was independently connected with a deterioration of LUTS in the female group.

Abstract
Predictive coding postulates that the brain continually predicts forthcoming sensory events based on past experiences in order to process sensory information and respond to unexpected events in a fast and efficient manner. Predictive coding models in the context of overt speech are believed to operate along auditory white matter pathways such as the arcuate fasciculus and the frontal aslant. The aim of this study was to investigate whether brain regions that are structurally connected via these white matter pathways are also effectively engaged when listening to externally-generated, temporally-predicable speech sounds. Using Electroencephalography (EEG) and Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) we investigated network models that are structurally connected via the arcuate fasciculus from primary auditory cortex to Wernicke’s and via Geschwind’s territory to Broca’s area. Connections between Broca’s and supplementary motor area, which are structurally connected by the frontal aslant, were also included. The results revealed that bilateral areas interconnected by indirect and direct pathways of the arcuate fasciculus, in addition to regions interconnected by the frontal aslant best explain the EEG responses to speech that is externally-generated but temporally predictable. These findings indicate that structurally connected brain regions involved in the production and processing of auditory stimuli are also effectively connected.
