Abstract
Dysgeusia is a common altered taste perception in chronic kidney disease patients. The study aims to identify available treatments for educating, screening, and clinically managing dysgeusia in this population. A scoping review was conducted following the protocol of Arksey and O'Malley, incorporating the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, and adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Among the 424 identified records, 13 studies were included. Screening methodologies, educational strategies, particularly a hospital-based program focusing on salt reduction, showed a significant improvement in dysgeusia (P < .001). The identified clinical treatments exclusively included oral zinc supplementation, with dosages ranging from 50 to 220 mg, reporting heterogeneous results not consistent across different studies. The personalized management of dysgeusia associated with chronic kidney disease is crucial, requiring targeted education and treatment protocols to prevent and address nutritional complications such as malnutrition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gargling mouthwash is a safe and convenient oral care intervention; it rinses the mouth and increases salivary flow rate. The effectiveness of lemon mouthwash in relieving xerostomia and increasing the salivary flow rate among hemodialysis patients has not been studied. Our study sought to analyze the effectiveness of varying concentrations of lemon in mouthwash solutions on xerostomia and salivary flow rate. METHODS A multi-concentration test was used to assess lemon mouthwash at 20%, 15%, 10%, 5%, and 2.5% concentrations to determine the optimal concentration for relieving dry mouth and increasing salivary flow rate. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the differences between various concentrations of lemon mouthwash and baseline values. RESULTS In total, 44 patients were recruited. The 10% lemon concentration mouthwash was the most effective for increasing salivary flow rate, but the 5% and 2.5% were better accepted by the participants. Our findings can help establish intervention guidelines to relieve xerostomia among hemodialysis patients. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mouthwashes, a cornerstone of oral and dental hygiene, play a pivotal role in combating the formation of dental plaque, a leading cause of periodontal disease and dental caries. This study aimed to review the composition of mouthwashes found on retail shelves in Turkey and evaluate their prevalence and side effects, if any. METHODS The mouthwashes examined were sourced from the 5 largest chain stores in each district of Istanbul. A comprehensive list of the constituents was meticulously recorded. The research was supported by an extensive compilation of references from scholarly databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Through rigorous analysis, the relative proportions of mouthwash ingredients and components were determined. RESULTS A total of 45 distinctive variations of mouthwashes, representing 17 prominent brands, were identified. Amongst the 116 ingredients discovered, 70 were evaluated for potential adverse effects and undesirable side effects. The aroma of the mouthwash (n = 45; 100%), as welll as their sodium fluoride (n = 28; 62.22%), sodium saccharin (n = 29; 64.44%), sorbitol (n = 21; 46.6%), and propylene glycol (n = 28; 62.22%) content were the main undesireable features. CONCLUSIONS The limited array of mouthwashes found on store shelves poses a concern for both oral and public health. Furthermore, the intricate composition of these products, consisting of numerous ingredients with the potential for adverse effects, warrants serious attention. Both clinicians and patients should acknowledge the importance and unwarranted side effects of the compnents of the mouthwashes.

Abstract
PROPOSE High salt intake, correlated with high salt taste threshold, may accelerate renal injury in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, few studies have focused on factors that influence salt taste threshold. Therefore, we aimed to identify factors that influence the salt taste threshold of CKD patients, to provide more precise salt restriction recommendations in dietary therapy. METHODS Between April 2016 and March 2019, we measured the salt taste threshold of 1019 CKD patients, aged 22-78 years, from 52 hospitals across southwestern China, and then we performed a cross-sectional study. RESULTS The mean salt taste threshold was 0.37 ± 0.16% NaCl. There were 115 (11.3%), 670 (65.7%), and 234 (23.0%), respectively, patients who had low (≤ 0.1% NaCl), medium (0.1-0.4% NaCl), and high (> 0.4% NaCl) salt taste thresholds. One-way ANOVA and regression results revealed that sex (male), age, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate, and absence of salt restriction were factors that influenced CKD groups with high salt taste threshold. CONCLUSION We found an independent correlation between contributory factors including sex, age, eGFR, and salt restriction behavior of subjects with the salt taste threshold of CKD patients. Our findings also offer insights on salt taste thresholds that could be useful for clinicians advising salt restriction to impair the salt taste sensitivity of the corresponding populations.

Abstract
Taste alteration is a common, but poorly understood, symptom in end-stage kidney disease. The pathophysiology of taste alteration is complex; to date, management has been largely empirical. As our understanding of pathophysiology grows so does the evidence base for its management. This article introduces a clinical tool-the CKD Taste Plate-to assist clinicians in directing management to the underlying pathophysiology of taste alterations in chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and have been associated with reduced health-related quality of life and malnutrition. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of taste changes in an ESKD population and to evaluate whether taste changes are associated with the presence or severity of other nutrition-related symptoms and malnutrition. METHODS We conducted a retrospective audit of people with ESKD on conservative, nondialysis management or renal replacement therapy who had completed a taste change assessment. Taste change was assessed on a Likert scale from none to overwhelming. Descriptions of taste changes were also collected. Other outcomes included gastrointestinal symptoms collected using the iPOS-renal symptom inventory, nutritional status, and biochemical parameters. RESULTS In total, 298 patients were included in our analysis. Taste changes were reported in 38% of this cohort. Taste changes were significantly associated with upper gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and dry/sore mouth) and malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that taste changes are highly prevalent and probably under-recognized in ESKD. Further investigation of the association with malnutrition is needed. Future trials are needed to evaluate strategies to manage taste changes in this population.

Abstract
One of the most disabling, yet neglected, symptom of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is alteration in taste. The purpose of this review is to examine the extent and content of research around this symptom in CKD with the goals of (1) identifying gaps in current research knowledge and (2) guiding future research. The review summarizes the basic anatomy and physiology of taste followed by analysis of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management strategies for taste changes in patients with CKD.
